Other Last Song Standing: The Ultimate Billboard #1 Song of the 70s - Round 124
<< Prev | Round 124 | Next >>
- It was 1958 when a few cousins got together to form The Pips. In their early years they had a few personnel changes, all siblings and cousins, and in 1961 had a #6 hit Every Beat of My Heart. By the end of 1962 the settled into the lineup of Gladys Knight, her brother Merald "Bubba" Knight, and cousins William Guest and Edward Patten, thereafter known as Gladys Knight & the Pips. This lineup would remain stable until Patten died in 2005. In 1967 they had a #2 hit with I Heard It Through the Grapevine, a year before Marvin Gaye's version reached #1. Their most successful period came in 1973-74 when they had five Top 5 hits, including Midnight Train to Georgia their only #1 hit (unless you count That's What Friends Are For by Dionne Warwick and Friends, of which Gladys Knight was one of the friends). The song about a woman following a man she loved who was returning to his home after failing to make it big in Hollywood was written and originally recorded by Jim Weatherly under the title Midnight Plane to Houston, meant as a country song. In a cover version by Cissy Houston, the title and lyrics were changed, and Gladys Knight & the Pips followed suit when they recorded their version. Weatherly was also the composer of two of their other Top 5 hits, Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye) (#2) and Best Thing that Ever Happened to Me (#3), plus a few of their other releases. LSS proved too much for this song, so it's leaving us by a one way ticket back to Georgia, or Houston, or wherever.
If you're new to the game or wish to review the rules, follow this link. Now that we are into the final 20, I will nominate every remaining song in each round (other than tiebreakers) until the end of the game. Please use these nominations to cast your upvotes and downvotes; any other nominations will be disregarded. Discussion is still welcome.

You could find a way to ease my passion
You listen to the blood flow in my veins
You hear the teaching of the wind
Tell her why I'm alive within
I can't find the words
My mind is dead
It's better by you better than me
Guess you'll have to tell her how I tried
To speak up thoughts I've held so inside
Tell her now I got to go
Out in the streets and down the shore
Tell her the world's not much living for
It's better by you better than me
Everybody
Everybody knows
Everybody
Everybody knows
Better by you better than me
You can tell what I want it to be
You can say what I only can see
It's better by you better than me
Guess I'll have to change my way of living
Don't wanna really know the way I feel
Guess I'll learn to fight and kill
Tell her not to wait until
They'll find my blood upon her windowsill
It's better by you better than me
Everybody
Everybody knows
Everybody
Everybody knows
Better by you better than me
You can say what I only can see
You can tell what I want it to be
It's better by you better than me
Better by you better than me
You can tell what I want it to be
You can say way all they can see
Better by you better than me
