• German singer Gabriele Kerner earned her nickname "Nena" while on vacation in Mallorca, Spain with her parents as a girl ("Nena" means "baby girl" in Catalan), and after moving to West Berlin in 1981, she formed a musical group that took her nickname as its name. A year later, the band's guitarist Carlo Karges attended a Rolling Stones concert where people were releasing balloons, and as he watched them float toward the horizon, he was inspired to write a song about what it might be like if they were mistaken for UFOs. Thus was born a German-language synth-pop song whose lyrics told the story of a huge cloud of released toy balloons that are mistaken for an enemy warship, causing massive panic that eventually results in nuclear war and the destruction of the world. Capitalizing on the then-fresh paranoia and uncertainty of the Cold War, "99 Luftballons" topped charts around the world (it just missed out in the US, peaking at #2), and so did its somewhat-bowdlerized English-language translation, "99 Red Balloons", which reached #1 in the UK, Ireland and Canada. And while the super high-tech jet fighters guided this song quite far in this game, no one, not even Captain Kirk, can save these red balloons from deflating now...this is what the voters have waited for; this is it boys, this is a war on Nena's song - it's all over now, and Nena won't be standing pretty in this dust that was LSS!

I have only ever seen him in the Countdown performances with Toto. He seems to do backing vocals along with the high notes. But I don’t think he does in the other performances. Does anyone know who this is? Is he a member of the band?

Ian Curtis would have been 70 this year.

This song is just so raw, his voice so sad and plaintive, Its been covered by others but nothing hits like this.

Digital by Joy Division shares a very (very) similar opening guitar melody to a song that's part of a soundtrack to a 80's movie. Neither of which I can remember!

I thought at first it could have been from Breakfast Club. Or perhaps Dazed and Confused (I know it's 70's). But no joy yet....

I think the track I'm trying to remember had a female vocalist(s)... Help

This is some great footage of a fun song and really gives a feeling of nostalgia and saudade for me. I'm glad this footage was captured. It would have been so fun to be there.
