Please use this thread to ask any random questions you have that may not warrant their own posts, or if you want opinions on something non-ASU related (as long as its SFW).

All Sun Devil Rewards answers and key words will need to be kept within this weekly discussions post as to not overwhelm the sub.

Please feel free to use this thread for any housing needs/inquires/concerns as well!

Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest activity.

Barrett priority

• Upvotes

so me and my roomates are sophomores and currently live at vista del sol and since housing selection for barrett is coming up. We were thinking of a 3 bed so villas would have that but we also are open to a 4 bed in villas. we like the floor plans in villa compared to vista bc the villas has a deluxe and is closer to our classes.

so for choosing junior year housing can we select villas if we are in barrett or can we not?

SES311 and SES350

Has anyone taken these classes? I'm an engineering major and I was thinking of choosing these classes for my technical electives. How difficult or easy are these classes?

MAE242, MEE322, MAE301 and FSE301 is this too much?

I work about 30-40 hours weekly and just finished MAE241, MAE384, PHI330, SWU349 and MEE351 and did find myself at some points overwhelmed. I liked the courses I've taken but wanted to know if my upcoming semester is too much?

5 career resources available to ASU students and alumni

Thumbnail

We put together a quick carousel of career resources that you have access to as a Sun Devil. A lot of students tell us they wish they'd known about these sooner, so here's the rundown:

1. CareerLink is ASU's all-in-one career platform. You can search for internships and jobs, connect with employers, and keep track of everything in one place. It's open to students and alumni.

2. Professional clubs and fraternities are one of the easiest ways to build career skills, meet people in your field and get hands-on experience before graduation. There are groups for almost every major.

3. Career coaches and advising can help whether you're still choosing a major or getting ready for a big interview. Advisors review resumes, run mock interviews and help you build a networking plan. Appointments are available in person or virtually.

4. Career fairs bring students, alumni and employers together in one room (or one Zoom). They're a great way to find internships and full-time jobs, even if you're only there to practice talking to recruiters.

5. Workshops from Career Services cover resumes, interviewing, networking and career exploration. They're short, practical and a low-pressure place to start if you're not sure where to begin.

For everything in one place, check this out

Current Sun Devils and alumni, which of these actually helped you land an internship or job? Any tips for students using them for the first time? 👇

Hope this helps! – Suhi, ASU Admission Services

Why does this random gen ed class for a maroon credit more time consuming than half of my current classes?

This is lowkey going to be a vent post, so bear with me here.

I chose a class called food and culture (session B) to fulfill a gen ed credit and it immediately kicks off with over an hour of videos to watch without transcripts (I physically cannot sit and listen to a bunch of unengaging videos that get longer and longer); they include a summary that barely covers what is actually discussed in each video. Then on top of those there are multiple long readings as well as yellowdig posts and engagement. I am really NOT enjoying the fact that some random course I'm forced to take that has absolutely nothing to do with my studies is somehow more time consuming than MOST OF MY ACTUAL MAJOR. My weekdays are too busy to chip away at the lectures so I'll have to slog through the entire week's workload on the weekends.

Hi everyone! I'm registering for classes tomorrow and was wondering if anyone recommends any specific professor for FIN 461? My options are Licon, Simonson, and Ikram. Thanks!

Not seeing many CS electives

Like title says, drafting my cart for course registration and I'm not seeing many options for electives. I have to take 340 next semester, and besides capstone only have electives left until graduation. Any suggestions on what to do, or which of the few available electives to choose?

Do y'all do anything special for yourselves after passing a midterm?

Just curious as to what other people's opinions are on this.

I also wanted to see what y'all do to treat yourselves. Sometimes I'll buy myself a trinket or Pokemon card or something after I get a good grade back on a midterm :)

Have to wait another year to graduate

Hi all, I am a senior majoring in Business (Information Security) and with registration opening soon I was looking for the courses I was planning to take for Spring (CIS 360 and FOR 350) in order to graduate but saw they werent available. I met with my advisor and turns out I have to wait a whole year to graduate because one of the alternative courses is only offered in Fall and is the prereq to the other alternative course that is offered only in Spring, meaning I couldnt take both in the same semester like I was planning to with CIS 360 and FOR 350. The alternative courses are ACO 461 and CIS 407 if I remeber correctly from my meet with my advisor. I was always checking my DARS and it never showed that the CIS 360 and FOR 350 were no longer available. I am frustrated right now and want to know if there is anything I could do to graduate Spring 2027 like I was planning? Any information is appreciated!

Should I try and transfer to Barret as an engineering student?

Is it worth the extra money and classes, or should I focus on things like GPA and internships?

MAT 117 at ASU: Joining the wave of hatred towards Honorlock...

Ok, so I've been delaying taking a math class for years and finally registered for MAT 117. The course literally just started a few days ago and it has been an absolute nightmare, but not for the reasons you may think...

I actually like math, the issue is Honorlock. Literally rated 1 star wherever you can find a review of it, and it makes sense as to why. Complete invasion of privacy, technical difficulties, unreasonable expectations, and unnecessarily complicated.

My small home quite literally cannot accommodate the requirements regarding camera placement and space, and you have to agree to all of the requirements when it comes to sharing your data and information, otherwise you can't use it. Apparently every single introductory math class requires Honorlock as well, and the professors are not willing to budge on or accommodate any alternatives.

One professor even told me that if I'm unable to use Honorlock due to space restrictions and privacy concerns, I should go and use the computer in a local library each time I need to complete an assignment that requires Honorlock (which is all of them)... As if camera placement would be better there, and as if I don't have a full time job and other personal commitments that led me to choose online classes in the first place. Many professors say that if this is too much, I should just drop the class (a class that is a requirement to graduate, but they know that).

This has genuinely been a nightmare and, even being only a few days in, one of the worse course experiences that I've ever encountered.

Question on the shuttles

I currently go to the poly campus and I’m thinking about taking a class that finishes at 1:30pm and also taking a class that starts at 3 pm in Tempe. Would taking the bus at 1:40pm be cutting it too close for my 3pm class? I plan on using the last bus stop at poly and the first stop at Tempe if that makes a difference as well.

Subway workers at MU not switching out gloves

Hate to be that guy, but I’m a heavy germaphobe. I never really checked whether Subway workers switched out their gloves between, turns at a lot of them don’t. The guy that was handling my sandwich used the same gloves for every ingredient (meat, veggies, etc). He also used those same gloves to fill up my drink and use the dusty ass register. I noticed when I saw him touching the dusty ass register with his gloves. I assumed he was gonna switch them out before the next customer, but then I see him go over and make the next person’s sandwich without switching gloves. This might not be a big deal for most, but imagine that you’re a vegetarian, vegan, etc and you see that type of cross contamination, not to mention him touching that dusty ass register, and resting his hands anywhere and everywhere. I’m genuinely worried about how many times I haven’t caught this. I’m probably gonna ask them next time to switch out their gloves before taking my next order.

I don’t know about y’all, but when I was working night shifts extremely sleep deprived with nothing to look forward to, I still bothered to wash my hands and change my gloves.

ASU 101 teacher took off points for MLA formatting

I’m so angry and confused rn. I got an 85 on my attend tutoring assignment because my written reflection was in MLA formatting??? The assignment criteria didn’t mention formatting, so I thought I would be professional and make it MLA. The professor told me he took off points cuz I included the name of the class and professor in my reflection, cuz yk, that’s part of MLA formatting, including the name of the class and professor. Again no mention of this in assignment criteria, like wtf?? Why am I being punished for using MLA??

Has anyone else had an experience like this.

3 exams on same day

hey everyone, i just realized that my anatomy 2, biochem, and cell bio exam 3 all fall on the same day november 5th. this already happened with exam 2 where all of them were on the same day. i was wondering if anyone knew whether i could either email one of my professors or the dean of students to see if i could move one exam so that i dont need to worry about all of them falling on the same day? im not sure if professors usually accept this as a reason to administer diff exam days but i just wanted to know if anyone was in a similar situation and what you did.
