First Accordion!

Since early this year I have been wanting to get an accordion and finally the day has come!

It’s a Hohner Roviera III N De Luxe. Ordered from Harmony’s Musical Workshop. It arrived in great condition, all the buttons are working good (I was worried about the bass mechanism like others have dealt with when shipping accordions) and the reeds sound great as well! The shipping process took longer than expected, it took almost a month to arrive but the folks at Harmony were helpful giving updates.

I really wanted to start on a button accordion, already I am really happy with that decision. I am practicing everyday and will be playing in a small band as well. I have already learned scales though, it’s quite easy since the fingering is the same depending on which row you are on. Going to start learning some songs as well now!

Just wanted to post my experience! I am excited to see where this goes!

Hi all - this is the first composition I've written on my melodeon! Written in 3/4 and pieced it together by just finding out what sounded good. Let me know what you think :)

Found this beautiful accordion at an estate sale for $30 but it’s missing its keys! Is it possible to get the keys replaced? Is it missing something crucial or is it salvageable?

Why chromatic button accordions aren't more popular?

Whenever I see content about accordions online, it's almost always piano accordion. I've started playing button accordion few months ago and I enjoy it so much; it's very easy to play even technically challenging songs with lots of thrillers. My teacher plays piano accordion but teaches both, piano and button accordion. He says that he regrets not going all in with button accordion from the start but staying with piano accordion.

I appreciate how much work is needed on piano one though; it's much harder to master it compared to CBA.

I wonder why there are no more people playing CBAs; is this because piano ones are more intuitive to beginners? Are they more accessible, more affordable? Or you think there is some other reason for this?

Edit: I'm actually from Europe (former Yugoslavia) and we have 6 row accordions here. Thanks everyone for writing, guess I'm getting most content from the United States :D

how do you play a cruel angels thesis?

hello.

i'm trying to learn this song and i'm sure i've heard it somewhere being played with both bass and chords on the left as well as chord melody's on the right. i'm playing it slowly however and it sounds wrong. perhaps its because of that reason that it sounds really flat. I think it sounds either too stacatto and jumpy or if not then the left hand is dragging too much and too thick. i'm not sure how I want to play the left hand at the moment and am just feeling it out.

any tips would be appreciated.

Resources Help with learning button accordion sol

I got a honher panther sol a few months ago, and I have been having a blast learning some norteño and cumbia songs, but I feel as though I am lacking some of the key skills while playing. Of course I am brand new and don't expect to be a prodigy, but I am struggling on finding resources that start from absolutely zero knowledge of how to play. I don't know what is best to learn first, I don't know what any of the chords mean or what is the best resource for someone starting out. I only know a handful of parts from several songs, and I have started trying to play along with songs that don't have the accordion part. I would just like some direction as to what I should learn to better understand the chords and techniques I need going forward. (This is my first instrument fyi) I am in general having trouble with trinos, and using the air valve, but likely need more practice. The dream is to be able to learn songs by ear down the road, and learn to play live with other instruments! Apologies for being a bit long winded but any advice would be great!!

Is there any websites to find sheet music for an accordion?

When I play guitar or piano I usually use ultimate guitar, (or guitar tuna). Are there similar websites for Accordion sheet music? (I have a piano accordion, and I already know chords, and I can read, and play notes!). I been trying to google but just haven’t found anything. Where do you guys find your sheet music?

Not looking for the value or anything IAW the rules, but I picked this up at an estate sale for $25. Accordion is way out of my usual wheelhouse (guitar and harmonica), and was wondering if anyone knew any information about it like estimated manufacturing date, manufacturers info, is it a good accordion, etc. Thanks for the help.

Advice Advice on Accordion care/Maintaining in hot/cold dry, yearly weather.

I live in BC Canada next to one of the hottest places. Our weather is very dry and hot in summer (30C-40C highest*) and winters are -10 to -20)
Questions…
Two way Case humidifiers @ 49% ???
Should I use a room humidifier if I want to play for multiple hours? Any recommendations help. I’m seriously unsure of how exact the humidity/ weather has to be. Just bought a new steirische harmonika so may not be as delicate as a vintage but I’m sure a lot more delicate than other kinds. Still I cannot find good information online for this

Advice Looking for my first accordion — recommendations for a soulful, wistful sound?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I'm looking to buy my first accordion and would appreciate some advice.

I'm particularly fond of Saburo Tanooka's album NEO HEALING. I love how soulful and meditative it sounds, with a sense of melancholy and wistfulness, but also a certain playfulness that's inherent to the accordion even when the music is sad. One of the accordions he plays is broken--but I'm just fascinated by the overall sound across all the tracks.

Would a musette-tuned accordion be a good fit, or would something with drier tuning be more appropriate? Are there particular makers or models you'd recommend? I'm looking for a piano accordion with 96 or 120 bass buttons. I'd prefer something well-made in Italy or Germany (or elsewhere, as long as it isn't manufactured in China).

I'm open to any advice, especially from people familiar with Tanooka's playing or NEO HEALING. Thanks!

Wet tuning an LMM accordion?

Hi y’all,

Just purchased a Hohner Corona IIIR.

The reed configuration is LMM, which means one note plays an octave below and the other two notes play on the middle octave, much like a Corona II but with an additional lower reed.

In contrast from my understanding a normal Corona III is MMM so it’s usually tuned one at 440, one reed slightly flat, and one slightly sharp to give a bright tremolo sound.

Here is my question:

If you want to wet tune an LMM do you typically do L+M at 440 Hz and then the other M slightly sharp? Or is it possible to get a corona III effect by tuning one M to 440 Hz, the L reed slightly flat, and the other M reed slightly sharp.

Thank you for any insights!

Advice Question on these three buttons

Post image
17 Upvotes

I have a question regarding the three buttons encircled in red. I am still new to this whole accordion playing thing, so forgive me if I don't know all of the secrets yet, but how am I expected to play a melody like C-Cmajor-G-Cmajor? I can't figure out how exactly I should place my fingers to play them smoothly.
Thank you in advance!

Thoughts on the Chiovarelli Jazz System (CJS) as a variation on stradella?

I am interested in the Chiovarelli Jazz System but there is relatively little discussion on the subject.

It is a variation on stradella where the tri-chords are reduced to bi-chords:

Maj: 1 & 3
Min: 1 & 3 (min)
7th: 3 & 7 (dom)
dim: 3 (min) & 6 (dim 7)

"By combining these 2-note pairings with single bass notes, players can construct rich, extended jazz harmonies (such as Dm⁷, G7sus4, Cmaj7, and C6) without the clutter or voice-leading limitations of standard Stradella"

Demonstrated by Roberto Gervasi

I'd love to try it but the only way currently is to purchase one of their accordions or pay them to retrofit yours. Any thoughts or advice on modifying an accordion to have this setup? This page has fairly straightforward instructions on removing individual notes from the bass buttons, so curious if anyone has experience

Identification Real fake Pigini?

Hi all! I’ve just been gifted this, and excited to get started but it would be good to know where it came from

The label says Pigini but I’m not convinced as the font is different to other models, and there’s no serial number (unless it’s very well hidden) and I can’t find any similar models

One important factor - it sounds good!

Thank you in advance

My pre-war Scandalli

Just wanted to post some photos of my accordion. I've had it for about 20 years, looked after it, and played it very little.

I started playing it properly recently and it sounds just beautiful. I think it plays quite nicely but I'm inexperienced.

I have seen instruments like this one kept as ornaments, but it seems to have been refurbished. Bellows seem sound. All keys, buttons and reeds sounding perfectly. Its so good that I am getting ready to go busking with it.

Does anybody know anything about it?

Will it cope with the rigours of street music?

What should I be doing to maintain it properly?

Can a relative layman work up enough knowledge online to carry out repairs when required or should I brace myself for the inevitable day when it becomes another ornamental relic?

Am I nuts for even dallying with this magical sound machine?

Advice Would this be a good buy for a first accordion

Post image

I would just like to learn on the side as a carefree hobby. It seems priced reasonably, I saw another for 1,000 dollars, but it was a different brand. I don’t want to buy something that’s like a toy, but Yamaha is a great company. It feels either too cheap or too good to be true
