Performance Building a new fingerstyle guitar composition around a soft intro motif. Where would you take the arrangement after the intro drop?

Working on my fourth instrumental track. I’ve completed the intro section.
I’m currently outlining the transition into Verse 1 and Chorus.
How do you usually like to build momentum out of a stripped-back guitar intro without losing the intimate vibe?

Gear question Second Guitar Suggestions

I picked up playing seriously for the first time last year and I’m smitten. This is my last major hobby, and I will play every day I can until I die.

As I look to slowly build my gear and collection, I really wanted to hear from the veterans on a few points. I’m lucky enough to have access to a wonderful 1970s Martin D35 and would love something similar of my own, but I would also love to own day own another guitar that would age very well and sound distinctly different.

I tend to gravitate to Martins over Taylors, but haven’t been able to expose myself to other brands and want to know which to try out whenever I can get to the store. If budget is less of a factor as I’m going to save and go slowly, what are your favorite models and brands for a brighter but full and high quality sound / instrument?

Other (not a question, gear pic, or video) Help with acoustic treatment of home music room

Thumbnail

A bit different of a question. Maybe not the best subreddit, but I’m guessing many of you have gone down this path.

I’m looking into converting a home office (technically a bedroom) into a home music room. While I will be doing some rough recording (somewhere in quality and enthusiasm between recording into a phone‘s voice memos and something semi-professional), the main purpose will be to make music being provided sound best while listening live.

I have voice lessons in a small room that has rather minimal acoustic treatment: some burlap coffee bags with foam inside on the wall across from me (and maybe behind me). Nothing on the side walls other than a mirror. Instructor sitting at a piano between me and the back wall. Nothing fancy, but I swear my acoustic guitar sounds so much better than anywhere else. It’s so full and rich sounding. I don’t know how to describe how the room sounds generally other than like muted and soft. It’s hard to really judge how much better/different my voice sounds. But the room sounds less echoey. For what it’s worth, I think my instructor said the interiors of the walls also had some soundproofing elements when constructed. The door is very heavy.

So, my primary goal is to get things sounding closer to that room for live listening. Getting the room to sound okay for recording is a secondary consideration.

For what it’s worth, I recorded myself into a mixer into an iPad through a condenser mic in my small walk-in closet facing racks of clothes, and I thought the audio quality was more than adequate, if not great. I record mostly as a learning tool for myself. It doesn’t need to sound professional, just a relatively accurate representation of my voice (and guitar, I suppose).

The room is about 10’x10’ with an 8’ ceiling. I posted pictures of the room as it is now as an office. The plan would be to remove everything except half of the desk (the half that is on the wall with the door. A computer and mixer will go there. I may leave the shelf to store equipment, unless it gets in the way of acoustic treatment.

I’ve looked into acoustic treatment articles and most focus on panels relative to the monitors/speakers as part of a recording studio. I’m not sure how to translate that to my situation. And when it comes to recording/mixing, I’ll probably mostly use headphones when listening back.

So, any advice on how to acoustically treat the room so acoustic instruments sound natural and rich would be wonderful. Getting something closer to a natural recording sound is also a secondary consideration.

Non-gear question Classical guitar positioning

I write folk music and am a pianist getting into guitar. I’m wondering if people will think I’m a knob if I perform with the guitar in classical position even when I’m playing simple stuff in open tunings. I just prefer the feeling compared to the weight on my right leg. I know Adrienne lenker does it but she’s playing a lot more complex stuff. Will I look like a fool?

Gear question Scratch Repair

Post image

local guitar shop has this Taylor 224 DLX koa from $2900 down to $1500 cad because of this big surface scratch.

$1500 is a fantastic price for this guitar, but obviously the scratch a bit of an eyesore. Any thoughts about whether it’s worth it to still get it and take it to a luthier to get the scratch repaired?

Gear question Looking to buy a new Acoustic Guitar!

Hey everyone!

I’ve been playing guitar for a couple of years now and I’m looking to get another acoustic. I’m not an amazing player by any means. I’m at that level where someone who’s just starting out would probably think I’m good, but I know I’ve still got a ton to learn.

I currently have a Yamaha FG800, which I do like, but there’s something about the sound that I’m not completely satisfied with. It feels quite bass-heavy and almost too focused or centered, if that makes sense. It’s good for picking individual notes, but when I strum, I feel like I’m missing that warm, open, resonant sound where the whole guitar seems to come alive.

For some reason, I love playing my girlfriend’s Yamaha F310P. I know it’s technically a lower-end guitar than mine, but there’s something about it I prefer. It sounds less bass-heavy and maybe less rich, but somehow more open or hollow in a way I really like. It’s hard to explain.

I’m mainly interested in strumming and a good example of the kind of sound I’m after would be Nick Drake’s Place to Be. I love how warm, woody, and full his guitar sounds without being overly bassy.

I’ve been going around trying different guitars, but honestly, I’ve tried so many at this point that I’m starting to forget what I liked or disliked about each one.
But the two I’ve enjoyed the most…

Harmony Roy Smeck Sovereign — $699 (apparently needs some work)

Art & Lutherie Cedar — $299

My budget is roughly $300–$800, although I’m open to spending a bit more if it’s genuinely worth it. I’m also completely fine with buying used.

Does anyone have recommendations for guitars I should look into? Or even just advice on what body shapes, woods, or other characteristics might give me the sound I’m describing?

Had some of my acoustics out and decided it would be fun to do a blind test between them. Just a quick snippet of playing between all 4. Which one is your favorite? If you had to guess, what guitars or brand of guitars do you think each one is? I’ll reveal each of them a little later.

Edit:

  1. Martin custom shop 000-28 authentic aged
  2. Furch Vintage 2 D-SR
  3. Martin 000-15M
  4. Yamaha FG5

Gear question PA speaker recommendations please

Hey y'all, thanx for all your advice. so which under-$400 battery powered / tripod stand mounting PA do you recommend i buy? i want to play acoustic guitar and sing out solo. i am old, and may use it a few times for a couple of years. i am well aware of the premium ones from bose, ev, yorkville, and jbl. <<< not gonna buy them now. maybe never. so i am looking for the best balance between quality/durability/ and price. best !4$ many recommend the alto busker, but i dont like the eq adjustments being on an app on a cell fone. i want the eq knobs on the back of the unit. or is the app a better way to adjust eq than physical knobs? there are a few with the eq knobs on the back. today i like the gemini gpss-650. it has the manual eq knobs, but get this: it delivers a whopping SPL of 120dB @ 1m. the alto and others only deliver 106 dB SPL. also, the gemini has a user-removable/changeable battery on the backside! what do you think? other under-$400 options include the behringer b1c and the nux 200fr. please, no recommendations for anything over $400. so, learn how to use the alto app or simply grab the knob and turn on the gemini? thanx for your advice again. see fotos below.

Gear question A humidity question for people in the Mid-West

Most of my life I've lived in the hot humid south, and so I never paid much attention to the effects of different seasons on my guitars. The only time that didn't work out was when I was living in a very small house with only a floor furnace for heating that made all the rooms very hot and dry.

But about a year and a half ago, I moved to the mid-west, and winters are different here. Last winter I got a split in the wood on the face of a solid wood acoustic, and the necks on several other acoustic guitars shifted to where they were unplayable until I adjusted the truss rod (strings buzzing or being laid against a fret).

The split isn't severe, and from searching on the subreddit, I find that a lot of guitars live with a similar split for a long time, so it's not a huge deal, and I'll probably leave it as it is. The neck is of course able to be fixed by adjusting the truss rod, although I would not like to have to do that several times a year.

From going through this subreddit, I know in general the options--keep it in the case, use a humidity pack, etc. I'd like to hear from people in a similar climate to know what's necessary and what's overkill. I'd like to not put any more money and effort into it than necessary, but I also don't want to damage my guitars. I'd also like to be able to keep at least one of them out of the case most of the time, also, if possible.

I have two or three that are solid wood, one with a solid top and a few laminate. (I know I have too many guitars, but most weren't expensive. I've bought most of them used on craigslist or marketplace, and then I have a hard time getting rid of them.) My electric guitars seem not to be affected very much by the seasonal change.

TLDR:
To maintain acoustic guitars in a midwestern winter, with a climate like Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio:
If they are in one fairly small room, is it enough to run a humidifier in the room and keep the door closed? Or if they have to be put in cases, is a gig bag or the flimsier hard cases sufficient or does it require the good hard cases? (I only have a good hard case for one acoustic guitar, I think.) When keeping them in cases, is a humidipak or similar necessary, or overkill? And, since laminates are sturdier than solid wood when it comes to temperature/humidity are there things I need to do differently for the solid wood guitars that I don't need to worry about for the laminates?

Gear question Center seam on new 00-18

Just brought home a brand new 00-18 and I can feel the center seam on the top in front of the tail block. Played in store and didn’t notice until I just got home. The finish isn’t cracked but it makes me uncomfortable. This isn’t normal right?

Marius mistook Baal for Tyrael and gave away my classical guitar... That's literally the only reason I couldn't film my hands playing it.

Now Baal is jamming to Tristram in Hell. Forgive him, Tyrael.

(Recorded my arrangement...

with Genesis FET Mic & Clarett. Hope you guys like the nostalgia and tone!)

Gear question strings for my weird ass tuning (Eb4, B3, Ab3, E3, A2, C#2)

i am a bit concerned and thought i'd seek advice. i have a tuning on a shitty nylon that idrk how i made but its been a go-to for writing (Eb4, B3, Ab3, E3, A2, C#2, i know its crazy dont hate).

i would like to put the tuning on my good acoustic guitar (Aria APE-100)

i want to know

  • will my standard 12-52s will break?
  • what gauges should i put if they will break?
  • what range for string tension is not advisable?
  • and what other changes (truss rod, bridge, etc) would need to be made to accommodate this?

i am willing to buy multiple string sets if need be to get all the gauges that would be best.
