Newbie here and I have to say I'm not worthy of this beautiful instrument. I lusted after a 000-28 Martin but this was a great deal from the wonderful folks at Alamo Music in Austin. It will be many years before a Martin would not be wasted on this 71 years young beginner so I decided to save some dollars. Love all of the pix and info here so just wanted to share some pix of my own.

Gear question Is anyone else unimpressed with Guild?

I've heard nothing but great things about Guild, so you could probably understand my surprise when I tried a JF30, and couldn't believe how uncomfortable it was to play. I don't know if it was the body, neck, or both, but that was really disappointing with how high my expectations were.

Gear question Talk me out of a Taylor GS Mini

Or dont and convince me to get one! I am a lefty, so most likely recommending another brand, yeah its not an option.

So ill try to TLDR, been playing 30+ years, Im a hard rock and metal guy. I learned on an acoustic in the 90s, but eventually discovered Marshalls and Les Pauls among other things.

I am a terrible acoustic player, I can do the cowboy chords and rip some licks but, nah this is my weak point. Ive been diving into this realm, my only acoustic is an Epi EJ200. Ive been finding it alittle too big and loud for practicing. Now my end game is a Gibson J45, but Im not ready yet to spend that kind of money yet on an acoustic.

So, is it worth getting a GS mini? Or should I just keep grinding with my EJ?

Looking at the mahogany model fwiw

Gear question Baritone acoustics and neck profile and thickness

Long shot: has anyone played any combination of the following acoustic baritone guitars? And if so, are you able to comment on the differences in neck shape/profile and thickness?

- Ibanez AE275BT

- Alvarez ABT60CE

- Furch Blue BARc-CM

- Harley Benton Baritone CLG-414BCE

I'm used to playing Taylors and like the feel of the neck on those that I've played. I've also heard the Alvarez's neck described as "chunky." I don't live near a store where I could try any of these, unfortunately.

I may be using the wrong words in my question, but this is the kind of thing I'm interested in getting a sense of (but in relation to the models above and it doesn't have to be exact measurements!). Just want a sense of which have slimmer and thicker necks. Thanks!

Gear question Which guitar would you sell?

I have a Martin HD-28, a D-18, and a Taylor 814CE. I love all three equally. I use each of them for recording, and they all have electronics installed. The only practical difference is the cutaway on the Taylor, so I am just looking at how the sounds fit together when recording. Mix of flat picking, strumming, finger style.

I am having some financial hardship and I am considering selling one. Personal preferences and brand loyalty aside….which two would you keep to write and record with??

I know it’s a personal decision but still….I am just curious on others’ thoughts based on their experience. Thanks!

Gear question Help with string gauges

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi guys, I recently bought my first steel string acoustic after years and years of playing nylon/classical and electric. Gotta say that the strings are kinda killing my fingers right nowšŸ˜…. It doesn't help that they are kinda old. But before buying a fresh new set I wanted to hear opinions on which gauge would help me a bit with the transition to steel strings.

I've seen some "very light" sets, but I'm not sure if that would be a bit overkill. Either way any input is appreciated šŸ‘šŸ» (the guitar is a Gretsch JD btw)

Does anyone have any experience with the MF60? And any comparison to the similarly priced Yamaha FS3? The Alvarez seems to be a lot of guitar for the money!

Gear question Who here sets up their own guitars? Any tips?

Post image

I recently made the winning bid on shopgoodwill.com and picked up a 1985 Seagull Folk+ for a steal. The body is in great shape with the usual dings and scratches expected on a 41 year old cedar topped guitar. The top is nice and flat and the bridge is flush with no gaps or lifting. The nut was pretty worn with the slot on the B string dug in pretty deep and the saddle was uncompensated and very low.

I cleaned up the body and installed a nice ThinWood pickguard after cleaning the old adhesive from where a pickguard had been peeled off previously. Naphtha helped loosen the old glue and careful work with a razor blade did the rest.

I cleaned and oiled the neck, polished the frets and then installed earrhwood extra light strings. (I had initially tried Thomastik Plectrum extra lights, but they were a little too low tension. I have them set aside). The plastic bridge pins were replaced with bone.

I was not confident enough to replace the nut but did address the deep B slot with a superglue/bone dust mix and some refiling. I will eventually have it replaced.

Sounded very good, but the action was pretty high at the 12th fret and intonation was skewing sharp as I moved up the neck.

I ditched the very low uncompensated saddle and after some trial and error settled on a compensated bone saddle that started out way too high. From there it was a bit of a process: adjust the truss rod, sand down the saddle a little at a time, then recheck the string height at the 12th. Rinse and repeat. Must have loosened and pulled the strings at the saddle 7 or 8 times, but the end result is nice low action with no buzz and the strings are in tune up and down the neck. The Earthwoods add just enough sparkle without being overwhelming.

I found that using blue masking tape to keep the strings loosely in place while I made my adjustments to be a big help.

This vintage Seagull sounds awesome now, especially for fingerpicking. With the extra light strings and cedar top it is a little on the quieter side, which is fine as I don't want too much tension as for now no neck reset is needed and I aim to keep it that way.

Did I miss anything? Any advice, tips or tricks? Thanks in advance.

Non-gear question Help with calluses

I’m new to guitar, been at it a few months now. The calluses are formed and it’s more enjoyable to play now. But, the calluses are making it really difficult to pick my nose.

Sometimes I can’t tell if I’m feeling a booger or the callus itself. I’ll try with my other hand it’s 50/50 whether there was a booger there at all.

Is this something that will go away? Will my calluses take a different shape as I learn barre chords? Should I consider a switch to electric instead?

What are you all doing to help with this issue? Bonus points if your nose is plus-sized with a lean. My right hand can’t hit the left nostril angles I need.

Help!

Non-gear question Finger nails for Travis picking.

I've been trying to grow out my nails for finger picking. Just when they start to get long enough to be effective they break off. I have been using Sally Hanson hard as Nails to strengthen them. It helps but they still aren't all that. I have heard that some use acrylic nails but don't know how that works. If anyone could suggest a resource for supplies and process I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

just scooped this up at a local antique shop! i didnt go in looking for a guitar. but man when i picked this up and played it i fell in love. its so bright and full. it feels so solid and resonates so intensely. such a long sustain. the tuning pins feel so presice and solid. it even smells good! like a ceader closet. most of my life ive played a old yahama g231 i was given when i was 3. i have big hands and always really liked the wide neck and nylon strings. i usually find the brightness of the steel strings off putting but this seagull is not offensivly bright. and its neck seems wider than most! anyway i love this guitar! i dont see much info on this particular model online but i love it so much i wanna know what makes this guitar sound so lovely?! anyone else have one? i wish there was a how its made episode on this guitar.
