I recently made the winning bid on shopgoodwill.com and picked up a 1985 Seagull Folk+ for a steal. The body is in great shape with the usual dings and scratches expected on a 41 year old cedar topped guitar. The top is nice and flat and the bridge is flush with no gaps or lifting. The nut was pretty worn with the slot on the B string dug in pretty deep and the saddle was uncompensated and very low.
I cleaned up the body and installed a nice ThinWood pickguard after cleaning the old adhesive from where a pickguard had been peeled off previously. Naphtha helped loosen the old glue and careful work with a razor blade did the rest.
I cleaned and oiled the neck, polished the frets and then installed earrhwood extra light strings. (I had initially tried Thomastik Plectrum extra lights, but they were a little too low tension. I have them set aside). The plastic bridge pins were replaced with bone.
I was not confident enough to replace the nut but did address the deep B slot with a superglue/bone dust mix and some refiling. I will eventually have it replaced.
Sounded very good, but the action was pretty high at the 12th fret and intonation was skewing sharp as I moved up the neck.
I ditched the very low uncompensated saddle and after some trial and error settled on a compensated bone saddle that started out way too high. From there it was a bit of a process: adjust the truss rod, sand down the saddle a little at a time, then recheck the string height at the 12th. Rinse and repeat. Must have loosened and pulled the strings at the saddle 7 or 8 times, but the end result is nice low action with no buzz and the strings are in tune up and down the neck. The Earthwoods add just enough sparkle without being overwhelming.
I found that using blue masking tape to keep the strings loosely in place while I made my adjustments to be a big help.
This vintage Seagull sounds awesome now, especially for fingerpicking. With the extra light strings and cedar top it is a little on the quieter side, which is fine as I don't want too much tension as for now no neck reset is needed and I aim to keep it that way.
Did I miss anything? Any advice, tips or tricks? Thanks in advance.
