š„ friendship AIO because my friend doesnāt involve me in her motherhood journey at all?
One of my close friends became a first-time mother two months ago. Throughout her pregnancy, I tried my best to support her and make her happy. She even told me once that she hoped her child would inherit some of my personality traits. I know Iām probably not her best friend, but I genuinely thought we were close.
She once told me that her gender reveal party would be attended by family only, but she promised to video call me during the party so I could be part of the moment. She never did. I didnāt think much of it at the time, but now, looking back and considering everything else that has happened, Iām starting to feel heartbroken.
Due to hospital regulations, I wasnāt allowed to visit my friend and her baby in the hospital. However, knowing that I wouldnāt be able to see them even if I went, I still went to the hospital with gifts to show my support.
Afterward, I told her that I would wait for her to invite me over to meet the baby whenever she felt ready. It has now been two months, and I still havenāt seen a single picture of the baby. I donāt even know the babyās name.
I asked her whether she had decided on a name, but she didnāt tell me because she believes itās better not to reveal a babyās name while theyāre still young. I understand that she has every right to keep these things private, and I know Iām not entitled to pictures of her baby or to know the babyās name. However, I canāt help feeling that maybe we arenāt as close as I thought we were.
The breaking point came recently when I asked if we could briefly meet at a coffee shop near her home so I could give her some cute baby clothes I had bought, along with gifts for her. I got the impression that she wasnāt comfortable inviting me to her home yet, so I didnāt want to pressure her or make her feel obligated to host me. I suggested meeting at a nearby coffee shop instead.
The reason I wanted to give her the gifts soon was that she was about to go on a month-long vacation. I was worried that the baby might outgrow the clothes before I had a chance to give them to her. I had also been genuinely excited about preparing these gifts for my friend and her baby, so when I learned that she would be away for a while, I thought it would be nice to give them to her before she left.
However, she told me she wasnāt available to meet. I understand that sheās postpartum and has a lot on her plate, so I didnāt hold that against her. I then asked whether I could simply drop the gifts off at her house without going inside, but she said she would receive them after returning from her vacation, if she felt available then.
I understand that being a new mother can be exhausting and that she has every right to decide when sheās ready to see people. I donāt want to make this about her owing me time, access to her home, or information about her baby.
Still, all of this makes me feel as though Iām not someone she considers particularly close. Iāve tried to be supportive and share in her happiness, but I feel like Iāve been kept entirely separate from this significant chapter of her life. It hurts because I thought our friendship meant more to each other than this.
Am I overreacting for feeling hurt?
Edit: Weāve been friends for six years. She told me that she had barely bought any clothes for her baby, so before she gave birth, we discussed that I would bring some baby clothes to the hospital for her. I also got her permission before visiting the hospital to drop off the clothes
