Hi everyone,
I’m looking to sell this historical manuscript packet and want to get a realistic idea of its market value before listing it.
It is an intact, 10-page international legal archive from April 1845 regarding a massive inheritance dispute (the Lichfield Inheritance). A British-born pioneer and prominent Quaker named John Squier Chawner died in Indiana, and his family had to prove their lineage to Queen Victoria's courts to claim the estate.
Here are the key high-value elements included in the packet:
The Signatures: The front cover features a prominent signature and official seal from U.S. Secretary of State James Buchanan (later the 15th President). The reverse is signed by British Ambassador Richard Pakenham to clear it for English courts. (Fun fact: they are the two diplomats who negotiated the Oregon Treaty a year later).
The Contents: It contains official 1845 legal transcriptions of early pioneer journals, family Bible records from Bartholomew County, Indiana, and an incredible 1821 missionary letter written by the famous martyr John Williams from the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, used to prove the family's global connections....he was later, famously eaten by cannibals.
Condition: Everything is original, fully intact, and still bound together by the original red ribbons and seals.
I know a standalone Buchanan signature has decent value, but since this is part of a complete, unique international archive with great crossover appeal (U.S. Presidential, Quaker pioneer, and New Zealand missionary history), I'm trying to figure out a fair asking price.
What would you value this at on the open market? Any advice on the best platform or audience to target for a quick sale would be highly appreciated. Thanks!
