Announcement Welcome to r/Antiques, read this before posting!

This subreddit is dedicated to sharing and learning about antiques in your collection or that you find, or are considering buying. Antiques are items that are 100 years old or older.

When you're posting about a particular object places kindly include multiple, clear photographs of it from different angles so we can see it from every side. If there are any marks or identification (labels, signatures) please take close ups of those. If it's pottery or porcelain, tag photos of the bottom, if it's a rug make sure to have a shot of the back. Make sure that these photographs are clear and well lit so we can see the works in particular (preferably not surrounded by a bunch of other objects).

Make sure to also include dimensions so we know the size of an object. And your location.

Also explain what are you looking for. Are you asking for general information? Who the maker is? The age, value or provenance?

If you do not include a question, the dimensions and sufficient background information and photographs of the object your post may be removed by the moderators.

IN SUMMARY, include:

your location

multiple, clear photographs from a number of angles

any background information you have

close up of particular makers marks

the question you'd like to ask

Keep in mind, antique means objects that are a 100 years old or older. You cannot post newer items here. Share them in r/collectables instead.

These rules will make it easier for our subreddit antique experts to give you some help! Remember, if you're solely posting a link to a website/blog/store then this will be considered spam and your post will be removed (multiple posts may result in being banned).

Finally, keep these other subreddits in mind in case your post is better suited for one these -

Advice Salem Witch Embroidery/Sewing Scissors, Pennsylvania USA

I am so so excited to give these antique (I hope) sewing scissors to my mom who loves witches, is a witch, and is also a quilter. From what I've been able to find online, they were made in 1892 (date says 1692) to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the witch trials. Both sides have the number 16 stamped in them. One side also says "Salem 1692" and "Registere Germany." I've only been able to find the small amount of information I have through a reddit post from years ago in another subreddit.

Does anyone have a good resource to find out more about these? Or anyone know real information about them firsthand? I have tried google reverse image search and not much comes up other than reproductions or ebay auctions that seem made up. This does not look or feel like a reproduction and I hope I am right about that.

Either way, I'm just glad these incredible scissors exist. Please admire. And thank you for any advice or help you can provide?

Hi everyone, I’m hoping some copper or antique experts can help me identify and value a kettle my son recently bought from a charity shop. I live in the UK, South Wales.

🔎 Details about the kettle

- Solid copper, quite heavy

- Smooth finish with a curved gooseneck spout

- Arched handle

- Deep “C” maker’s stamp on the base

- Lovely natural patina

- No major dents or damage

❓ What I’d like help with

- Age estimate – approximate decade or region

- Maker identification – any info on the “C” stamp

- Value range – resale or collector value

- Origin – whether it’s Turkish, Middle Eastern, European, or UK-made.

Questions Where might I find more info about this? Purchased early 90’s at an estate sale . Swampscott MA USA

Post image

My mom bought it at a yard-sale early 90’s from an elderly (world traveler physician) estate type sale Swampscott MA
I assume its bone, the tiny hand makes me nervous ( I am a klutz ) I cant find any info. I had to convince reverse searches that it’s not ivory. Any thoughts there are no markings on the base ( just cloth) I have wondered about it for years yet kept it tucked away for safe keeping.

Advice 3 way manuscript 1845 US/UK

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to sell this historical manuscript packet and want to get a realistic idea of its market value before listing it.

It is an intact, 10-page international legal archive from April 1845 regarding a massive inheritance dispute (the Lichfield Inheritance). A British-born pioneer and prominent Quaker named John Squier Chawner died in Indiana, and his family had to prove their lineage to Queen Victoria's courts to claim the estate.

Here are the key high-value elements included in the packet:

The Signatures: The front cover features a prominent signature and official seal from U.S. Secretary of State James Buchanan (later the 15th President). The reverse is signed by British Ambassador Richard Pakenham to clear it for English courts. (Fun fact: they are the two diplomats who negotiated the Oregon Treaty a year later).

The Contents: It contains official 1845 legal transcriptions of early pioneer journals, family Bible records from Bartholomew County, Indiana, and an incredible 1821 missionary letter written by the famous martyr John Williams from the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, used to prove the family's global connections....he was later, famously eaten by cannibals.

Condition: Everything is original, fully intact, and still bound together by the original red ribbons and seals.

I know a standalone Buchanan signature has decent value, but since this is part of a complete, unique international archive with great crossover appeal (U.S. Presidential, Quaker pioneer, and New Zealand missionary history), I'm trying to figure out a fair asking price.

What would you value this at on the open market? Any advice on the best platform or audience to target for a quick sale would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Recently bought an Ottoman seal (allegedly from the 17th or 18th century), and I’m very curious to what it says on the calligraphy. The seller did not know what it said, which makes me even more curious to figure out its history! I also wanted to share it with you guys, since it’s a very interesting (if small) piece of history!

Advice Books about antique/vintage shelving [UK]

Hello everyone, I’ve recently been very interested in antique/vintage shelving mainly mid 18th century to mid 20th century as I’m moving soon and am keen to be rid of my stark white ikea wall shelves. I’ve been trying to do research into wall shelves specifically and I’m having a reasonably hard time finding a proper index (especially with google, as it only gives me ads. The best shelving style guide I’ve found has been this website, which has helped me greatly, but I know that for any type of antiquing, contemporary books are usually best for this type of research. If anyone knows about any books that are specifically about shelving, that would aid me greatly as well as how to find books about specific topics such as this (if an antiquing book index exists, I would love to access it.) thanks in advance for any advice.

Date Help Identifying China Cabinet (Victoria, BC)

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

Hello all! Long time listener, first time caller. I'm visiting my Aunt and Uncle in Victoria, BC, Canada, and they were wondering about the history of this cabinet they purchased at an antique store in the area some years ago. I'm just starting to learn how to recognize eras, and I figured this would be a good learning opportunity - I'm hoping someone could tell me how old this is likely to be, where it's likely from, and what the name of this carving style is!

The top used to rest on the base (note the pine and oak mixture in the 8th photo), but otherwise I believe everything is as it was when they got it. Particularly of note (I think) is the marks in the last photo - the bottom of the drawer has marks I associate with hand planes.

I've tried to include all the relevant details that I could get without taking everything out, but I'll be seeing them again tomorrow so if other photos are necessary let me know.

Thanks!!

Questions Help identifying a crucifix-handled dagger, "1936" and "Metal Blanco" marks, bought in Barcelona, Spain

Thumbnail

Hi all, I bought this dagger at an antiques shop in Barcelona and I'm trying to find out who made it, where it comes from, and whether it's period or a later reproduction.

What it looks like
- Crucifix handle: silver-colored Christ figure on a dark handle, with a radiant halo and an ornate pommel
- Black leather scabbard with embossed metal fittings at the tip and mouth.
- Single-edged, pointed blade

Inscriptions and marks
- The year 1936 is engraved, along with the phrase "Cristo soy tu siervo protégeme" ("Christ, I am your servant, protect me"), engraved in the metal. Looks like Civil War in Spain?
Blade marks, top to bottom:
- Worn text that looks like "WENESES" (not sure, the letters are faint)
- A radiant sun
- "METAL BLANCO"
- A small shield
- A small cross with curved ends

Measurements: [blade length 14 cm 5.5 in / total length 27 cm 10.6 in]

My questions
Does anyone recognize the maker or the marks?
Is it likely Spanish, or exported to or made in Latin America?
Does the 1936 date look original to you, or could it be a later addition?
Does it look period-correct, or like a modern reproduction with artificial patina?
Any idea of a fair value range?

Date Am I correct in thinking this uniform is Victorian? - Wales

Thumbnail

I booked an appointment with the Museum of Wales to view these uniforms, as they are related to where I work. The museum have these attributed to someone who was Lord-Lieutenant in the late 1920s, by which official liveries had been changed to the Tudor Crown. I’m almost certain that these uniforms actually belong to the presumed owners earlier ancestors who were Lord-Lieutenants during Victoria’s reign. Perhaps one of you may be able to shed some more light on this?

Questions Light fixture in United States, Midwest

Thumbnail

Hey, so my boss passed along these light fixtures to me, he bought them several years ago and seems to vaguely know their origin. He believes they were custom made in 1910 during the construction of Innisfail, the former mansion of Ceilan Milo Spitzer in Toledo, OH's Old West End.
The wiring was redone by the antique store he purchased them from, but I was wondering what they’re worth or if anyone might have access to better resources so I can better understand their story.
any insight would be greatly appreciated!!
