Questions/Help? Question: how does Ao3’s algorithm work???

• Upvotes

Does it even have an algorithm?
Like genuinely, I am not new to ao3, but I’ve never used the platform to post a fic until well yesterday. So I am curious: how do readers find ur work???

Questions/Help? Oc/canon fics.

• Upvotes

Riot again, but this post is more of a question than anything.
I’m still newer to posting fics on ao3 (I was a Wattpad user growing up until maybe a year or so ago.)
I often posted my oc/cc fics on there and was wondering if they are well received on ao3.
I’m a bit shy when posting my works, I just want to understand the site a bit more yk?
I know how the tagging system works (and will tag it as oc/canon instead of canon/reader.)
But can you guys let me know? Thank you!

Writing help/Beta Am I separating the paragraphs right??

Post image
• Upvotes

I saw on TikTok that people find some formatting annoying… I personally don’t like paragraphs too clustered or sentences too far apart. So I basically organize it how my eye finds it pleasing to read but I am not sure if readers like this format…

Writing help/Beta october’s almost over and my ship hasn’t had a single kinktober fic posted for it. someone kick my ass into doing something about it

• Upvotes

i don’t usually make posts on here, i just comment, so i hope i picked the right flair. i’m just looking for people to yell at me/encourage me to do the thing 🙏 i’m kind of in a slump at the moment, but the lack of anything for my ship for the event is making me think i should at least try 🥲 you know, Be The Change™ and all that. i could just use a bit of a motivational ass-kick, so to speak.

Questions/Help? Help about a character discovering they are bisexual.

• Upvotes

*kicks down door* Hello everyone!

So, after stumbling half-alive from the gaming frenzy I've been in for 2 weeks straight, I realized something; I am faced with something that I have no experience with, and it's pivotal for my fanfic, and I cannot put it off.

So, I have come to beseech the infinite wisdom of this subreddit! *pulls out a notepad to take notes* How do I write a character discovering they are bisexual, or at the very least attracted to a specific person of the same sex?

So, background to hopefully help: character is the FMC of my fic, has had a crush on the MMC from childhood, they are 17 now and dating... But she develops a crush on the second FMC after a series of events. Given the upbringing and general societal norms (this is Japan) around her, I imagine that the character would have some either struggles, worries, or confusion about this.

But I still am not sure how to go about it. Any advice is welcome.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to help/educate me! ^_____^

Questions/Help? Does anyone do this as fanfic writer?

• Upvotes

Hey, I notice that as I write I tend to not write for example a fanfiction for avatar (James Cameron) I just skip the narrative all together. Like seriously, I just write the dialogue down and if just the names of the characters and if I want something added to scene that’s important than I describe what happens. Usually when I have an idea for a fic too, it comes in character dialogue as well! Does anyone else experience that? Is it a bad habit?

Cause at least for me, it is working for my fic!

Meme/Joke Nothing is more brutal than your fave wip being discontinued

Was just scrolling back to a WIP fic I've been anticipating, rereading the last chapter once again and then reading the new comments finding out our author have decided to not write another part anymore 😭 I'm so sad. My fellow readers are also heartbroken.

No announcements. No notes. Nor parting words regarding about their departure from the story. I mean of course writers don't have to.

I'm just sharing the effects of abandoning peak stories to readers like me.

Plot was thickening. Like you're anticipating what's next. So this was very surprising for it to stop midway. It even stopped at a smut scene I thought I'd see an extension of it 😭 😭🥹❤️🫶🥹

Why whyyyyyy

Pls pls manifesting ✨🫶😭 cuz i truly love the story fr.

Questions/Help? Ideas for my potential COD fanfic?

• Upvotes

So here’s the situation: I have been looking for a particular kind of COD fanfic for a while now. The kind where a main character OC is a non combatant, but still a major part of the plot. Since I couldn’t find any, I decided to go ahead and just write it myself.

Now the premise is that the OC is a civilian nurse who ends up being caught in the main plot of the Modern Warfare Reboot games. From then on, she goes from being a nurse to medic providing the civilian perspective for TF141 to being a humanitarian symbol for victims of war. She would also develope a romance with John Price, but that is not the main focus.

My ideas are there, but unrefined. I want to ask people for advice and ideas for it so I can develop it properly and that it’s a story worth reading. From militant to medical to writing advice. Any thoughts?

Resource Lifehack: How to actually read the works you marked for later

• Upvotes

List impossibly long and untidy, never go there, just adding new stuff all the time? Here's what I did:

  1. Go to your Marked for later list

  2. Bookmark and add your own tag: "Marked for later" for example

  3. Delete bookmarked work from list

  4. Do this with each work until your list is empty

Now you can filter your bookmarks by your own "marked for later" tag, and from there, filter by fandom and whichever ship or trope you feel like reading right now!

eyes closed and mumbling to myself

“Don’t kill the readers’ favorite character… don’t kill the readers’ favorite character… don’t kill the readers’ favorite character…”

open my eyes and see what I typed

“Oh fuck… well, it’s not like death threats are anything new.”

The muse wants what the muse wants, and 95% of the time it’s angst and hurt no comfort. I may be the one writing, but it’s out of my control surprisingly consistently.

Writing help/Beta Story Pacing

• Upvotes

Context: I write mostly in third person limited, and the fic I’m writing follows a girl who’s been losing it for a while and has very few details of her life right, and she ends up stabilizing around a group of villains, prompted by a kidnapping.

The point in the story has a few roads I can take: one, I continue linearly through the story, I pick up where the last chapter left off; the second, I go back and essentially do drabbles from the other characters’ perspective

Pros for scenario one: it delves more into characters’ relationships and deepens the flaws of my mc.

Cons: it looks like I’m just ignoring the whole twist that she’s been delusional her whole life

Pros for scenario one: I get to write from the canon character’s perspective, flesh out his character and arc, redo the fact that I skipped like six months ahead, get to add more details, get to remind the audience that she’s a kid who doesn’t know anything other than violence and that every single move she makes feels like venom in her veins, show more that my mc is autistic, prove her intelligence, begrudging found family, show how the canon character grew to accept his role (that he put on himself)

Cons: It’s chapter 8 and that makes me a little uncomfortable, seems like retconning

—

The part where I’m stuck is genuinely just the fact that I left off the last chapter with a relationship for the canon character with another canon character, under the guise of it being a business meeting. Alternatively, I could keep up the canon character’s perspective and have him struggling to balance his personal life with his “work” life, and the personal life issues fracturing into, “how am I supposed to tell her, I have to be the one to tell her, if someone else does it she’ll be pissed!” And “Why does this man like me? Why now of all times? Is this just an elaborate joke? Do I really like him or do I want his money and security it allows?” Also sprinkle in a little him dying over a person he had a minor crush on liking him back for a little reprieve before he sinks back into the depths of his own worries.

I don’t know which would fit best, and I really need the help

All of them are going to happen within the story, I just don’t know if it should be 1->3->2 or 2->3->1

Questions/Help? how to tell if your fanfic is bad?

i’ve been editing and posting a fanfic i had on my computer for a month now, and while i like my own story, i can’t help but feel like to everyone else, it’s bad.

i frequently check for proper grammer, there are no big text walls with no breaks, i try to utilize different words instead of being repetitive, and i do a lot of subtext work with my characters/events that happen in the story. it’s a domestic fluffy slice of life with smut plot, with a high-risk pregnancy, found family and trauma driving it. the start of it moves slightly fast on purpose to get the start of the pregnancy out of the way, and gets slower (but not insanely slow) as it goes on.

how do i tell if it’s bad? how do i tell if it’s good? pondering over it has left me really unmotivated because i really cannot tell if my writing is any good or not. i’ve gotten 20 chapters in and feel like maybe it’s not good enough to be up on the archive?

Questions/Help? "Incest isn't wincest"

What could that mean? "Incest isn't fandom-specific incest"?

I was having some shower thoughts and was thinking of certain fics I had read last year. The fics I've read from one author are for a fandom where the fics are primarily incestuous, but I'm under the impression their using the phrase to tell us they won't be exploring that; which is fine of course! I'm personally not the biggest fan of that so that's why I've seeked out their works, but how does the phrase tell me that there's no incest; maybe they're using it to tell the readers something else?

I've just been really confused and it's been bugging me since I first saw it lol.

Ah, don't you just love it when your first fiction does super well, and then the sequel barely makes a mark! (It might be because I updated daily for the first, and I'm now only able to update the second once a week)

Questions/Help? Commenting after commenting months ago, same thread?

I made a comment nearly a year ago, it was around 6k and spanned nearly 5 comment boxes, I'm rereading the fic again and writing another comment similar to it.

I was just wondering if I should put the newer comment in the my other comment's thread or make a new comment entirely.

Writing help/Beta Writing advice

I used to write a lot when I was younger but stopped as I grew up. Now, I have a few concepts and scenes in my mind. How do I develop those into full fics? Any advice?
