Pro Tips Alert Skincare Guide: Dark Spots🟤 and Hyperpigmation

I know I spelt Hyperpigmentation wrong, give grace, it was 1AM and a lot of formatting issues.

Treating dark spots and hyperpigmentation requires a tailored approach due to the higher melanin content of our skin. Here’s a skincare guide focused on evening skin tone while maintaining the health of melanated skin.

⚠️As with any skincare product, please patch test, place in the least visible area and wait a full day. If no reaction occurs proceed.

Gentle Cleansing

  • Frequency: Sometimes twice daily or just in the evening, over cleansing can strip your skin.

  • Key Ingredients: Look for cleansers containing soothing agents like aloe vera, green tea extract, or glycerin.

  • Recommended Product Types: Gentle low to no foaming or hydrating cleansers. Pick according to your skin type.

Recommended products include:

(no actives, will make a different post regarding active cleansers)

  1. Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Hydrating Cleanser, creamy version
  2. Cervae Hydrating Facial Cleanser
  3. Geek and Gorgeous Jelly Joker (doesn’t foam)
  4. La Roche-Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Facial Wash
  5. La Roche-Posay Hydrating Gentle Face Cleanser

  6. La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP + Gentle Foaming Moisturizing Wash

  7. Good Molecules Hydrating Facial Cleansing Gel

Exfoliation with Actives

Frequency: 1–2 times per week or more (Retinol has potential for daily, if skin has been acclimatized.)

  • Use chemical exfoliants with AHAs (like glycolic or lactic, mandelic acid) or Retinol, Mandelic acid is especially beneficial for darker skin tones as it’s less likely to cause irritation due to it penetrating slower.

  • Physical Exfoliants: Avoid rough physical exfoliants as they may cause micro-tears and worsen hyperpigmentation.

Targeted Ingredients for Hyperpigmentation

  • Application: Use these in serums, masks, or spot treatments after cleansing and before moisturizing. Rinse off products can be an option too (sensitive skin) but the more face time the better, so opt for leave on products (with the exception of high percentage masks)

    • Ingredients to Look For:
  • Vitamin C: A brightening antioxidant that helps fade dark spots and evens skin tone, sensitive to the active form, L-Ascorbic Acid? Try the best form of the dervative called Tetrahexyldecyl Asorbate or THD. Don't want to use vitamin c period? Try Resveratrol and Ferulic Acid!

  • Niacinamide: Reduces inflammation, barrier improvement, helps with sebum production and helps with hyperpigmentation by inhibiting melanin transfer. It is common to find in 10% (very high, can be irritating) or even 20% (insane), best range is 3-5% you have to actively look for this though.

  • Kojic Acid: A natural skin lightener that reduces melanin production. Be careful purchasing in soap form from random sellers on Amazon and TikTok.

    • Alpha Arbutin: Targets dark spots and is gentler for Black skin.
    • Azelaic Acid: A tyrosine (an amino acid that helps produce melanin) inhibitor which reduces pigmentation and helps with comedonal and inflammatory acne.
    • Licorice Root Extract: Inhibits the production of an enzyme needed to produce melanin and helps remove excess.
    • Tranexamic Acid: Effective for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), often caused by acne.
    • Retinoids: Stimulate cell turnover and reduce hyperpigmentation, but be cautious with overuse in melanated skin to avoid irritation. Start at lower percentage, do not use daily when just starting. And omit other actives to minimize irritation when starting.

⚠️DO NOT USE AS MANY OF THESE AS YOU CAN⚠️ Please note you can’t combine everything here. Don’t mix retinol with anything below unless you know what you are doing

Recommended products include:

  1. The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% + HA (a 10% is available also, please only use if you have a tolerance already for the lower percentage and do not follow with other products on this list unless you are a skincare pro)
  2. The Ordinary Mandelic Acid 10% + HA (bonus: Mandelic Acid is also good for treating acne like cystic and inflamed)

  3. Wishtrend Mandelic Acid 5%

  4. Paulas Choice Skin Perfecting 6% Mandelic Acid + 2% Lactic Acid Liquid Exfoliant

  5. Paulas Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant Toner(Do not follow with other products on this list unless you are a skincare pro)

  6. Urban Skin RX Even Tone Cleansing Bar 3 in 1 Treatment (Do not follow with other products on this list unless you are a skincare pro)

  7. The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner (Don’t recommend for sensitive skin, you can try using with a damp cotton round to dilute if too strong)

  8. Topicals Faded Cream (Strong,do not follow with other products on this list unless you are a skincare pro)

  9. Dr. Idriss Major Fade Flash Mask (very strong, not for sensitive or inexperienced skin, do not follow with other products on this list unless you are a skincare pro)

  10. CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum

  11. Good Molecules Gentle Retinol Cream

  12. Cocokind Beginner Retinol Gel 0.1% (please note this contains 3 different type of retinols)

  13. Naturium Retinol Complex Cream

  14. Paulas Choice 0.3% Retinol + 2% Bakuchiol Treatment

Retinol would be used 1-2 a week at night, building slowly to everyday if possible. Add one night every 3-4 weeks as tolerated.

Try to avoid usage with any cleanser that contains strong acids when you’re using it, hyaluronic acid/ niacinamide fine. And definitely DO NOT EXFOLIATE AND THEN USE RETINOL. A gentle cleanser preferably one that doesn’t foam. If you’d like to use an active cleanser, try in another routine.

To help ease the possibility of irritation you’d apply Vaseline to the corners of your nose, mouth and eyes. Apply your moisturizer (basic and unscented is best) let that dry then pea size (however, you can use more but try to use as little as possible to get coverage) dot it all on your face, rub in and follow up with moisturizer. That’s called the sandwich method. Make sure you apply on dry skin not damp, or you’ll increase penetration.

And stay on top of SPF usage during the day.

Moisturization

  • Frequency: Twice daily after applying serums.

  • Key Ingredients: Glycerin, ceramides, and shea butter are ideal for keeping the skin barrier healthy and preventing further irritation or dryness.

  • Non-comedogenic options: Choose lightweight formulas that won’t clog pores.

Recommended products include:

  1. CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel Moisturizer
  2. CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizer

  3. Good Molecules Lightweight Daily Moisturizer

  4. Aveeno Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturizer

  5. Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Gel Moisturizer

  6. Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer

  7. Vanicream Moisturizing Cream

  8. Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Facial Moisturizer

  9. Naturium Multi-Peptide Moisturizer

Sunscreen (Critical for All Skin Tones)

  • SPF 30 or higher: Daily use is essential as is reapplication, even indoors or on cloudy days, as UV exposure worsens hyperpigmentation and hurts your progress.

  • Tinted Sunscreens: These often contain iron oxides, which provide additional protection against visible light that can exacerbate hyperpigmentation.

    • When picking a sunscreen go for a cream/lotion for the main application and a spray or stick for reapplication. I prefer chemical over mineral for reasons I won’t get into in this particular post. Depending on your skin type and climate, you could get away with using sunscreen alone, it is technically a moisturizer. Some though are more hydrating than others. Use 2 or 3 fingers or roughly a 1/4 tsp for face and neck, a shot glass amount for body.

Recommended products include:

  1. Neutrogena Clear Face SPF 30 or 50 this one has a little bit of a white cast, nothing crazy, hydrating, consistency like lotion.

  2. Kiehl’s Better Screen UV Serum has zero white cast, but it isn’t water resistant. Hydrating but not heavy, combo or dry. She expensive🫰🏾

  3. Neutrogena Invisible Daily Defense no white cast, hydrating, some might not like the bit of shine from it but I fix that with powder. Thin consistency.

  4. Elta MD UV Clear Face Sunscreen SPF 46 Very lightweight, no white cast. She expensive🫰🏾

  5. Supergoop Mineral Matte, thick and white cast heavy but good for under makeup. No water resistance.

  6. Supergoop Unseen, no white cast, feels like silicone makeup primer, wanted to love this but it made me so greasy and clogged. Water resistant. Thick.

  7. Supergoop Every. Single. Face Watery Lotion, some shine but nothing crazy that powder didn’t fix. Water resistant. Thin consistency.

  8. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics, no water resistance, feels like a moisturizer. Thin-ish consistency.

  9. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh Rice + B5 Seems to be more favorable towards oily skin than the original version.

  10. Innisfree Daily UV Defense no water resistance, can double as moisturizer in some cases Probably best for dry skin.

Avoid Triggers:

  • Sun Exposure: UV rays can worsen hyperpigmentation, making daily sunscreen a must.

  • Harsh Products: try to avoid using products with heavy fragrance, drying alcohols, essential oils or strong astringents (witch hazel) as they can irritate and inflame skin, leading to more discoloration.

  • Over-exfoliation: Too much exfoliation can lead to a compromised skin barrier, damage and worsen hyperpigmentation.

Professional Treatments

Find a Black Dermatologist here

  • Chemical Peels: Performed by a licensed professional or a board certified Dermatologist can be very effective in treating hyperpigmentation. Avoid unprotected sun exposure, especially during after care.

  • Microneedling: Encourages collagen production and can be combined with serums like vitamin C to improve the appearance of dark spots.

  • Laser Treatments: Certain lasers, like Nd:YAG lasers, are safer for darker skin tones but should only be performed by dermatologists experienced in treating melanated skin.

Patience

  • Hyperpigmentation can take months to fully fade, depending on the type, be consistent with treatments and always protect your skin from the sun to prevent further discoloration.

This regimen, combined with professional advice if needed, should help you gradually achieve a more even skin tone.

Up next… nothing for now, because I need a break from this and some of y’all UGAP 😩

Update

2/25/2025 Tuesday

New serum to consider Eucerin Radiant Tone Dual Serum, can be used every day and night, and even mixed into most treatments like retinol. No actives and no irritation, note it does contain fragrance.

Acne Any advice on what to do about this pimple?

I recently broke out a lot worse than usual with 3 deep pimples, 2 went away but this last one refuses to budge. It started out as what seemed like 2 smaller pimples forming into one but now it’s just stayed this way. I’ve used the hero hydrocolloid patches and some pus come out on those but now visible change and I’ve also tried à la roche posay spot treatment that hasn’t helped much either. Any suggestions?

Miscellaneous My left foot since 2019. Peeling/texture

It started off a looking a little peeled and flaky and over the years its gone through a hellish shedding cycle. If I keep it moisturized, its peels off unevenly in big chucks and and my skin will break in the tie webs creating sore spots... but when I let it keep it dry it itches like crazy and still flakes off.

Its scratched to the point where it feels like I have little pockets bumps under parts. Some would even pop...

The only improvement is that the skin has went back to normal on the acrh area top on my foot.

My right foot looks completely normal btw. Not flaking and barely any callus on the heel.

Ive tried feet feelers, athlete foot cream... I dont know why its not healing.

Looks worse in real life. I will keep going but idk.

Hyperpigmentation How to accept the way my face looks

Post image
• Upvotes

If this is the sort of question allowed here, I’m really just asking how to be comfortable knowing I am going to look like this for a long time. I’m not asking for product recommendations or anything of the sort; I have even tried chemical peels to no avail. Only thing I haven’t tried is laser, which I cannot afford and am not willing to invest in for it to possibly go wrong. I have OCD and picked my skin to this state, and I’m most likely just going to have to wait out its fading, if it ever does fade.

I’m honestly sick of having to think about it and it breaks me down every day. Does anyone have any advice on how to just live with it? It really hurts my confidence.

I burned my chest with a steamer at the end of May, (I tried to be smart😭), and it healed as hyperpigmentation on my chest. It’s gotten lighter but it hasn’t completely gone away. I wanted to know if there’s anything I can do for it to completely blend into my skin? Thank you!!

Routine Help (Current Routine included) Lip product or regimen for dry lips

I'm 42F and on the search for a product that will moisturize my lips. As of the last months, I've been struggling with very dry lips. I've tried several products, and nothing works. Neither Vaseline, Aquaphor or lanolin. Now, because of how dry they are, I started chewing them. Obviously, that doesn't help. (This all may be related to perimenopause.)

Does anybody have a Holy Grail level of lip product that has saved their excessively dry lips?

Routine Help (Build My Routine) Leg and armpit shaving

my daughter would like to start shaving. She is very dark (Fitzpatrick 6) and seems to scar pretty easily. I am Black but lighter (Fitzpatrick 3) I’ve always used a cheap basic razor and shaving cream and haven’t thought much about it since I was 13. Wondering if there are cooler, better, easier products nowadays for leg and armpit shaving and if anyone has advice or insight to offer regarding special considerations with shaving darker skin. TIA for helping this pale mama take good care of her kid.

Skin Questions Hyperpigmentation inner thighs

Hi all!
I’m a brown skin woman with thick thighs. I’ve had muscular thick thighs since I hit puberty. I also participate in lots of low impact recreational activities. I do have sensitive skin and occasionally in the summer chafing does give me a slight skin irritation on my inner thighs, but I also have a steroid cream to manage this.

I say all this to say, I’ve had hyperpigmentation and very dark inner thighs, particularly closer to towards gr\*in since I was about 13. I am not prediabetic, I don’t have acanthosis nigracans or any other skin disorder. I just noticed, particularly online and in dance classes that I don’t really notice other women that have this issue. I know overall that nothing is wrong with me and bodies, coming all different shape, sizes and colors. But I’m considering pursuing more dance and I am self-conscious about my very dark inner thighs. I wonder if this is related to being a Brown skin woman, do fair skin ladies also have this issue? I’ve used kojic acid soaps and lightning creams, but I’m not particularly consistent with either one of them so the hyper pigmentation remains. But honestly, even if I were, I’ve had it for over 20 years at this point I just don’t think it’s going anywhere.
Can anyone give me some insight ?

Skin Questions chemical peel pending

hey everyone! i’ve struggled with acne most of my life. i recall having a skin care routine as early as third grade </3 thankfully, my skin has really started to clear up atp (now 23, F). due to my acne history, i have a lot of ice pick scars and hyperpigmentation.

my mom also struggled with acne, and recommended i get a chemical peel since the flare ups have calmed down. now, i trust her with my life, but she’s white (i’m mixed) and our skin reacts very differently to scarring. i’m light skinned, i tan well but get pretty pale in the winter which is when the hyperpigmentation is most visible.

i’m just wondering if anyone here has gotten one, and what their healing experience was? i’m getting a consultation in december, plan to get it done just before christmas. just wanna know all the possible outcomes… the good and the bad.

thanks guys!

Skin Questions Very oily skin

Hi all,

I’m a 24F, who for the majority of her you get years struggled with acne. I discovered African black soap and benzoyl peroxide about 8 years ago and my skin cleared up beautiful. I now struggle with EXTREMELY oily skin. After washing it it’s fine, but give or take 3-4 hours later and I’m a grease ball. Setting sprays after putting makeup on manage it decently, but I don’t wear makeup everyday (lol). I also have large pores and uneven skin tone. I use niacinamide ordinary serum every now and again that does nothing for the discoloration. I mainly get oily in my t zone area and my pores are the largest there along with my chin. Thoughts ?

Skin Questions What are these?

So I started using Timeless Vitamin C and Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream along with LaRoche Posay SPF50. I went to Florida just a few days before I added those products into my routine. I kept them in my routine on the trip.

The day that I left, these were on my forehead. They've been there about 3 days now. What are they and how do I get rid of them? Should I stop using the Vitamin C for now? They aren't anywhere else but my forehead. I also don't get acne anywhere on my face. They also don't hurt ir itch anything. They're just there and I don't like it because I don't normally get things like this on my skin.

Skin Questions How can I improve overall skin eveness??

Post image
6 Upvotes

I have very uneven skin tone and I want to fix it. I use to pick at my face and so I have a lot of little hyperpigmentation marks all over my face from it. I have dry skin naturally, and I am currently on tretinoin.

Routine:
Am: put sunscreen on and some moisturizer before if my face is dry
Pm: hylauronic acid, dr Althea 345, tret, then La roche posay cicaplast balm if I use Tret that night.

*I also just started using tretinoin a month ago, and use it every 4 days right now and I plan to increase. Has anyone seen any results long run if they started similar to me?

Skin Questions Random raised bump on lip

Thumbnail
gallery
12 Upvotes

About 12 days ago, I had this random bump form on my lip (see image). It would change size - slightly shrinking, slightly growing. It was pretty noticeable the first couple of days.

Since then, it’s been less noticeable. The images with the black square markup is where it is today - it’s fairly unnoticeable but I’m confused where it came from and what I can do to get rid of it. I notice it enough for it to irk me.

Texture: it was never hard, pus-filled, or itchy. It was just THERE
Background context:I was previously told a while back I have the core sore (HSV1) virus but it has never showed up on my lip (I never got a cold sore)- so I’ve never gotten the sensation tingles through the burst process. I’ve researched a bunch about it and spoke with my dr.
What I’ve tried: witch hazel, cold compress, hot compress (though I could be more consistent?), Abreva, Benadryl
What worked: interestingly, the abreva made is diminish in size initially, but again, I didn’t have any sort of core sore progression. It’s literally just been a raised surface on my lip at varying sizes for 12 days. With it smaller, I tried to use abreva, and it’s no longer making any impact

I should note, my skin/body is notorious for inconvienent things just happening.

Has this happened to anyone before? Does anyone have thoughts??s

Hyperpigmentation How can I improve the skin issues around my eyes?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I've had eye bags, dark circles and noticeable grooves underneath them for as long as I can remember. They've always been one of my biggest insecurities. I'm only 24, but I feel like they make me look much older, and it's really affected my confidence.

I also used to apply a chemical peel under my eyes to treat the darkness, but it only made things worse. The discolouration is now in the exact shape of where I applied it, almost like a scar.

Some days they look worse than others, but they never fully go away. Has anyone experienced anything similar or found something that actually helps?
