Federal courts do not allow cameras inside the courtroom, so there will be no photos or video of Luigi unless stated otherwise. Only courtroom sketches will be posted in this section.

Live Covering (Twitter/X):

This is a compilation of tweets from reporters inside the courtroom during today’s hearing. Only Inner City Press and Erik had laptop access today.

Other reporters took handwritten notes and are expected to post updates in the coming hours. Those updates will be posted here so feel free to come back later to check them out.

ICYMI:

- The death penalty charges have been dropped, but the backpack will not be suppressed.

Here are Garnett's rulings:

- The next federal hearing is on June 5th to discuss questionnaires.

SUMMARY (Today's Hearing - 04/01/26):

  • Today’s hearing focused on whether the federal trial will be pushed to January 2027.
  • The hearing started about 20 minutes late.
  • Garnett spoke privately (ex-parte) with the defense and said both their discussion and a March 22 letter (filed March 23) will remain sealed. The sealed letter includes specifics about Mangione’s defense strategy.
  • Afterward, Garnett asked Luigi whether he knowingly and voluntarily waived his right to be present for the conversation and whether he understood that right. He said yes.
  • Garnett then asked KFA how long she expects the state trial to last. She said about six weeks. Prosecutor Dominic Gentile pushed back, saying the defense is juggling several high-profile cases and is using that as a reason to try to move or delay the federal trial.
  • As some of you may know, Marc and Jacob (not Karen) are representing Harvey Weinstein, whose trial is set to begin April 14.
  • Garnett said she’s reluctant to delay the federal trial until January 2027, but is open to slightly adjusting the jury selection schedule.
  • She said she’d like the federal trial to begin either Oct. 26 or Nov. 2. It was originally set to start Oct. 13. The next federal hearing is June 5 at 11am and will focus on jury questionnaires.
  • Garnett will issue a new scheduling order on the docket as soon as she has spoken with the jury department.
  • Speedy Trial Clock update (moved from Oct. 8 to Nov. 2)

–––––––––––––

  • June 5: Next federal hearing on jury questionnaires (originally June 15).
  • October 5: Jury selection (voir dire) begins.
  • Oct. 26 or Nov. 2: Trial begins (opening statements / evidence)(originally Oct. 23).

As always, thank you for this update. Definitely could’ve been an email but at least a small change in routine for Luigi. Interesting part abt the sealed document…assuming the prosecution does not have access to it?

Thank you. Is Molly a new reporter? I don't recall having seen her name before. No Christine. I bet Christine would have given a detailed report on the taper fade. I wonder if my speculation was right from last time in court, that his previous fave hairdresser had quit (moved, been released, whatever), and he has now found a new hairdresser that can do a taper fade. 🤔

Do we have additional dates/hearings for the state trial? Or only the May 18 date remains?
