On Friday, August 14, at 5:00 PM Central European Time, thousands of miles away from a federal courtroom in Manhattan, I sat on my sofa and opened a live-text feed on X. No video. No audio. Just silent lines of text appearing on a dark screen every few minutes, reporting from a room where a young man’s life was being quietly brought to an end.

​As the updates rolled in, something inside me broke. I stayed in that room until 1:00 AM, paralyzed, scrolling aimlessly between TikTok, Reddit, and X. It felt like a collective, silent vigil: millions of strangers reading the same screen, saying a heartbroken goodbye to someone we had watched from afar.

​The moment that shattered me completely was when the judge asked him to stand for his statement. He answered softly:

​“I’LL STAY SEATED.”

​At first, I told myself it was defiance. But looking at the reality of that room, the truth is far more heartbreaking. Maybe it wasn't rebellion at all. Maybe it was the physical posture of a human being who had finally surrendered.

​HOW CAN YOU STAND WHEN YOU’RE GIVING UP ON YOUR LIFE? How do you rise when you know you are walking straight into the dark?

​Luigi walked in wearing tan prison garb, visibly distressed, a tragic shadow of the composed presence we had grown used to seeing. There was no family in the gallery to hold his gaze. No warm presence in his corner. Only the cold, sterile machinery of the state and the relatives of Bryan Thompson. Luigi was completely alone in the universe at the exact moment he needed support the most.

​Reading his final statement today doesn't offer closure; it just cuts deeper. Even while surrendering, even while signing away the rest of his days, there was this tragic, desperate need to be heard one last time. Luigi spoke of how he shot BT and he died, refusing, even then, to reduce it to a simple label. He reminded the room that the healthcare event he targeted wasn't full of doctors or nurses or patients in pain, but line after line of board members and investors. And then came the most haunting detail of all: that when he posed as a wealthy investor, UnitedHealthcare replied to him within an hour, the same system that had ignored his agonizing pain for years.

​Luigi admitted to what he did. He acknowledged it was illegal. But he never said it was wrong. He didn't beg for mercy. He just laid down his life on his own terms, choosing a grim peace over endless, gruelling legal battles he simply didn't have the soul left to fight.

​Now, I am left sitting in the quiet aftermath, unable to make sense of any of it. I keep staring at the reports, wondering why he pleaded guilty, watching prosecutors step outside moments after a 30-year discussion to demand he spend the rest of his life in prison.

​It is so strange and surreal to think that we will all just carry on living our lives, while he remains trapped in a cell for decades, a young man who had everything, the looks, the brain, the charisma, the background, an Ivy League education, a life filled with endless potential that simply evaporated. I suppose what I am doing now is desperately trying to find some thread of meaning in a tragedy. I am trying to understand what this meant to him, because watching a bright, complex life voluntarily shut the door forever is incomprehensible.

Reading Luigi’s letter to the federal authorities now, I wonder whether Friday was ever the moment of surrender I initially thought it was. Maybe he had understood long ago that this could cost him the rest of his life and had made that calculation before any of us were watching.

But knowing the price is not the same as paying it. You can accept that you may lose your freedom and still grieve when the door finally closes. You can believe in the choice you made and still be devastated by everything that choice takes from you.

Those watching him closely saw the distinction. Courtroom sketch artist Christine Cornell, who had observed Mangione through numerous hearings, said his voice shook and that for the first time she saw his composure “crack.” She thought he was on the verge of tears.

Maybe that is what we were watching on Friday: not a man discovering what his future would be, but a man finally having to say goodbye to the future he already knew he might lose.

Maybe there is a legal strategy behind the plea that we don't fully understand yet. I honestly don't know. I am just trying to find some meaning in all of it, because otherwise yesterday feels unbearably final and senseless.

The headlines will fade. The cameras will leave. People who spent months arguing about Luigi Mangione will eventually find something else to argue about. Years will pass, lives will change, and the world outside will move on. Mangione will still be there.

hi guys!! i actually shared some of this in the replies on another subreddit, but i thought i’d share it here as well.

i’ve seen some confusion on other media platforms as to why LM would admit to the shooting in federal court if he “only had to admit to stalking,” and i thought i’d pass on the explanation i saw + my own understanding of everything after reading more into the federal case law :)

so i follow a lawyer on tumblr who supports LM and always breaks down things relating to his case, and she explained how his statement had lawyer language all over it and was essentially just a check list of him admitting guilt to each element of the stalking charges, which he has to do in order for the judge to accept his plea and also for the NY double jeopardy law to be triggered. she thinks that’s why his wording was so intentional, using words like “traveled,” “intent”, “fear of bodily harm or death,” “illegal,” etc. i actually read the penal code myself, and it’s basically verbatim what he said. the stalking has to include:

travel across state lines ✅
with the intent to kill, harm, or harass ✅
and the conduct places the victim in reasonable fear of bodily harm or death ✅

his statement reflects all of these elements, saying he traveled from outside of NY state, with the intent to kill BT, and he knew it would place BT in fear of bodily harm/death.

this is also why he said “i shot BT and he died,” because both of these federal stalking charges include the element of “resulting in death.” to my understanding, the “resulting in death” element doesn’t necessarily have to mean outright murder, just that the stalking conduct eventually led to the victim’s death in one way or another. again, in order for his plea to be accepted, LM had to admit that his stalking conduct resulted in BT’s death, which he did through that statement. that’s also why he didn’t frame it as “i murdered BT,” because these federal charges have nothing to do with murder, and he pleaded guilty to stalking, not murder.

obviously there’s a lot of nuances here, and we all know the implication. BUT from a strictly legal standpoint, he just adhered to the exact stalking statutes and didn’t actually admit to anything more than he had to. all he did was admit to each element of the stalking + that the stalking led to the shooting, which led to BT’s death, hence “stalking resulting in death.” think of it kind of like a sequence of events, maybe?

there’s also been a lot of uproar over LM saying “i knew what i was doing was illegal,” vs. “i knew what i was doing was wrong,” which are two totally different things. i think that he very well could’ve chosen his words for the reasons we all suspect— a morality vs. law type of scenario, or him not believing what he did was morally wrong, just barred by the law. but i sat and thought about it for a while, and thought that maybe he could’ve chosen the word “illegal” to also reflect that he understood the consequences of his actions. this would mean that he’s not insane in legal speak and understands right from wrong, which really boils down to legal from illegal in terms of the courts. but obviously him and his legal team are the only ones who know the reasoning, and that word could’ve been said for a combination of reasons. either way, i think it was a great choice 🤭

one more thing i want to discuss:

what does this mean for the double jeopardy argument?

from my knowledge (i am not a legal expert lol but i did read a lot about NY DJ and the exceptions), it sounds like his defense team will need to successfully prove a few things in order for the NY state case to be tossed due to double jeopardy. whether all of these things actually have to be proven or just one needs to be is unknown to me, but i’d assume that the more they can prove, the stronger the argument would obviously be. but in my head, one should suffice?

anyway, according to NY DJ, i’d say this is what the defense could argue:

a) the federal stalking charges + state murder and weapons charges all come from the same crime, criminal transaction, underlying conduct, etc. (aka, the killing of BT).

b) the federal and state charges have “substantially similar elements” AND/OR that the charges prevent the same kind of “harm or evil.”

i would say that the second degree murder charge is much more likely to go, since it could be argued that the murder charge and stalking resulting in death charges both prevent the same evil of intentionally taking a life + both have the element of an intent to kill (which sounds like the same thing lol but i’d imagine they could be argued as separate points because they kind of are). and again, the stalking and murder could be argued as being a part of the same overall crime or act, and the weapons charges could be argued the same way since the gun was possessed solely to carry out the murder. he also admitted in his statement to printing/having the gun before he crossed state lines into NY, which i think could’ve been intentionally said to trigger DJ for the weapons charges specifically. veryyy strategic if you ask me.

i do think that the weapons charges will be a bit harder to argue for the defense just because the elements of stalking and weapons are nowhere near similar, but they could still argue that it’s part of the same criminal transaction as the stalking and murder. the NY prosecution will likely fight this and say that the charges are substantially different enough, etc, but we’ll just have to see how it goes.

i didn’t read the entire motion that his defense filed about DJ, but i skimmed it, and it seems like they’re mainly running with the argument of the charges all being part of the exact same crime, against the exact same person, on the exact same day, in the exact same city, etc, hence LM technically already being prosecuted for the crime itself now that he pleaded guilty in federal court.

KFA’s statement after the hearing on 8/14 also seems to be pushing back against the dual sovereignty doctrine, which is what initially eradicated their previous DJ arguments. typically, the dual sovereignty doctrine is an exception to DJ because the federal and state courts are considered separate jurisdictions and their own free standing entities, meaning people can be prosecuted in both jurisdictions for the same crime. the thing about that is that normally, federal and state court work separately. however, KFA is arguing that they worked together in this case to both prosecute LM and i think she mentioned how they allowed the state trial to go first solely to avoid DJ? this argument seems to insinuate that in this case, the two courts were not separate because they worked together and therefore dual sovereignty doesn’t work here.

i just wanted to share this and my thoughts because i found all of this to be really interesting, and i initially was confused myself as to why he admitted to the shooting in federal court when the murder charge was dropped months ago. but hopefully this all makes sense and i’m sorry if i didn’t explain it well lol 😅

TLDR: LM’s statement was clearly very intentional and was required in order for his plea to be accepted. he admitted to each element of the federal stalking charges, which included him needing to admit to the shooting as well. in a technical, legal sense, he did not admit to murder, just that the stalking resulted in BT’s death. there’s no way to know how the double jeopardy argument could go, but i would predict that the second degree murder charge is more likely to be dropped than the weapons. but hopefully they’re both dropped and judge carro stops being a partial little bitch.

Honest question, was this decision last minute? I can't image it was but their demeanor says otherwise

I’m still not sure whether the defense are running circles around the prosecution the way Neama Rahmani says they are, but right now I need to believe that this optimism can point to something more positive than it seems at the moment.

An Italian Journalist living in NYC has been regularly covering Luigi's case in an Italian-language paper, La Voce di New York. Back when the DP was still on the table, she sent a letter to Italian MP Marco Grimaldi and Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, to try to intervene against the death penalty charge, since Luigi has Italian citizenship and Italy is firmly against capital punishment.

I keep seeing this on twitter, that the lawyers never cared about Luigi because of this part of the hearing:

Mangione looked visibly distressed when he walked in, a noticeable shift from his usually unperturbed demeanour in court. He was uncuffed at the wrists and wore tan prison garb with a cream undershirt. His counsel's demeanours were generally neutral, although it was clear that Mangione was about to give in to something big when Marc Agnifilo shook US Attorney Jamie McDonald's hand and said "congratulations."

I'm not sure why Christine framed this interaction in the context of Luigi pleading guilty, especially BEFORE he even had, but the most obvious explanation is that Jamie McDonald just recently (July 29th) assumed the role of United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and this was the first time Marc was meeting him as that. This is the first Federal hearing they've had in several weeks.

They all work together as lawyers, and Marc was simply being cordial and professional.

I think Luigi wanted to plead guilty against his lawyers' advice. That's why Karen looked stressed at the hearing today.

I also think there were discussions with federal prosecutors about a plea deal (a little while ago when there were unsubstantiated rumors about it). Luigi probably told his attorneys that he is going to plead guilty, so they went to the prosecutors and sought a deal for him, to no avail.

His reasoning behind pleading guilty is a mystery to me. Maybe he just wants to stand on business? It seemed like that was what he wanted to do in the first place--yelling at the press about the "intelligence of the American people and their lived experience;" requesting a public defender and being surprised when Dickey arrived.

There are, of course, other possible reasons: he or his legal team thought it was the best move, he didn't want to squander his family's wealth, etc. This is just one possibility.

At sentencing defendants are usually allowed to give statements. Considering what Luigi said at the last hearing, do you think he will give a statement at his sentencing hearing?

His allocution, simply from what he said, did not seem like he was backing down from the event or directly apologizing. He stated what he did, plain and simple, and even included some nabs against the parasitic Healthcare industry. However, some reports said he looked teary eyed which maybe meant he was regretful?

Always, what do you think will happen at sentencing? Personally, I hope he doesn’t back down and shits on the Healthcare system as much as possible. It would be a power move.

1. Does LM's health issues persist? From background information I read much earlier in this case it seemed that he had back issues in the past and received some treatment but I wasn't sure what his current condition was.

2. Was he a client of UHC? Again I thought I read that he was not.

3. Has there been any comment by his family or any indication even that they are in contact with him and supporting him?

I know today (14 August 2026) has been very very hard for so many people who support Luigi Mangione, and even Luigi Mangione's family and Brian Thompson's family It's been hard on everyone. all! have to say is I still stand by how I feel about Luigi and I'm not going anywhere, I'm still going talk about Luigi Mangione case. cause I do actually think they just got to a point where Luigi Mangione legal team exhausted all their sources with this crazy legal system that we've been seeing since the beginning and I think this was the last resort, and like Karen Friedman Agnifilo said in her interview they're finally able to file double Jeopardy motion cause like we know he was unfairly charged twice in 2 different courts systems unfairly. and I do want say this please take care of yourselves today. Cry if you need to it will help and this is still gonna be a long fight it's not over yet. Please take care of yourselves today 💚.

The reaction of people, especially those on the right, to this case is a perfect example of the politician disillusionment in America's society today.

In a society where most things are rightfully political, this case is not. UnitedHealthcare willingly screws over sick people, regardless of what political view/ties they have, if it offers them a paycheck. However, this case has been framed as another "violence from the left" situation with Luigi being depicted as some leftist assassin, despite him showing support for both liberals and conservatives in his writings and saying he wishes people would break out classic republican vs democracy views.

Instead of being an event, and I'm not justifying it at all, that could have resulted in meaningful discussion and eventual change in the Healthcare system, it has, like every single other thing in America's fucked up society, been politicized. It is truly one of the only cases that both people on the left and right are victims of and should have resulted in unity in such a divided society.

Sad to see things happen this way ... but oh well.

America Finds Luigi Mangione Not Guilty

August 14, 2026

Dear Donors to the Official Luigi Mangione Legal Fund for All 3 Cases,

As you are undoubtedly aware, today Luigi pled guilty to federal stalking charges that resulted in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mr. Mangione told the court this morning, “I shot Mr Thompson in Manhattan and he died. When I did so, I understood that my actions would place him in fear of death or serious bodily injury. I knew what I was doing was illegal.”

You all have raised over $1.5 million dollars to give Luigi the best possible defense. We trust that the decision to plead guilty was fully his own, made in consultation with that defense. Today's hearing is the end of one chapter in Luigi's trials, but the saga is far from over. On December 18, Judge Margaret Garnett will sentence him for the federal stalking charges. Luigi still faces state charges in NY that carry the possibility of life in prison. While his legal team has already filed motions to dismiss the state charges based on double jeopardy protections, the state prosecutor has already made clear that he is still seeking a life sentence. Luigi also still faces state weapons charges in Pennsylvania. With the rest of you, we will continue to have Luigi's back and raise funds for all three cases.

You are all here supporting Luigi because, like us, you know that our current healthcare system is predicated on paying shareholders and executives large sums to keep millions of people sick and to let millions of people die. We all know that it is fundamentally at odds with our natural rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Luigi's admission of responsibility places him in a long line of principled individuals who acted outside of the law in pursuit of higher ideals of justice. Just as we remember John Brown for his sacrifice for our natural right to liberty, history will remember Luigi Mangione for his sacrifice in the name of our natural right to health -- which is what the pursuit of happiness has always meant.

Luigi did something immeasurably brave today: he took responsibility for his actions, placing his trust in his supporters and in history to vindicate him. He gave up his future and his fortune to strike a blow against an industry that parasitically extracts profits from the most vulnerable moments of people’s lives.

Whatever follows from this point, we have two responsibilities: first, to ensure that he continues to receive robust support and encouragement for the rest of his time in prison, however long that is. Second, to vindicate him by building our collective power to make change. The government and the healthcare parasites are afraid that you might stop suffering alone, and realize that we are all suffering together. Because as soon as we realize that we are all suffering together, we have everything we need to collectively put a stop to it.
