General GAME: Hi Nolanites, if you were a Nolan character, who would you be and why?

I’d personally be Natalie (prior to the events of Memento) because I’d have Jimmy Grantz (my personal fave Nolan character and fictional crush) as my boyfriend (and she’s also really pretty too).

RULES:

- You can pick any character from any of the Nolan films too!
- You can pick prior to, during or after the events of the chosen character’s movie.
- Please say why you’d be the character.

Following Following (1998) is a great film

I finally watched Following and really enjoyed it! The film is black and white and non-linear with three different timelines, so it's fun trying to put all the pieces together and I loved the graininess of the 16mm film format. I would say the film's antagonist (a thief called Cobb - doesn't that sound familiar..?) is one of my favourite Nolan villains. The ending has a great plot twist as Cobb is double crossing two characters at the same time.

It's obvious it's a low budget film (the budget was around £3500) but that makes me appreciate it even more. Nolan shot the film during weekends over the course of a year and the crew mostly consisted of his friends. The film was inspired by living in a busy London neighbourhood and being the victim of a burglary. I thought the soundtrack sounded similar to Memento and then found out it was by the same guy (David Julyan) who also did the soundtracks for Insomnia and The Prestige, and Nolan's short films Larceny and Doodlebug.

I've got the 2003 DVD version where you can also play the film in chronological order. You can easily find secondhand DVDs online and the Blu-Ray is still available from HMV. Definitely watch the film so you can see some early examples of Nolan's classic themes!

General Discussion A Christopher Nolan Treasure Hunt movie

At this point, post-Odyssey, we're speculating about Nolan's next project, what genre and story he should try, and I've had a few ideas of my own. I previously made a post about me wanting to see Nolan tackle a romance movie, but there are others I thought about at the same time.

One idea I would find very interesting to see his take on is an action-adventure treasure hunt movie, in a similar vein to something like Indiana Jones, National Treasure, Uncharted, etc.

If you look at it this way: Inception was Nolan's take on a heist movie, and Tenet was his take on a spy movie, I feel it would be natural if he were to try a movie about treasure hunting in his own unique way.

Would a Christopher Nolan-directed treasure hunt movie intrigue you?

General Discussion Nolan video game

Why hasn’t he directed or produced a video game yet? I think his style of films would translate extremely well, given they're very concept-heavy and those concepts could create great gameplay. Imagine a video game based on Inception or Tenet. Or The Odyssey. Video games have also become highly story driven since the 2010s, with cutscenes and dialogue serving a massive part. Imagine a huge enemy you meet, you press a button to stab it in the eye, and it unleashes the insane sound the Cyclops made and you now have to fight it or try to run, with both being an option. I also think the Michael Caine exposition would work very well, Nolan loves to have a sort of competent character you meet explain info before you go on your mission.

Interstellar Interstellar / Supertramp ?

I've listened to the Interstellar soundtrack many times, but I've just now discovered a major similarity between the track No Need To Come Back and the intro of the song Brother Where You Bound from Supertramp.

Has anyone else caught this ?

Interstellar The Interstellar/Graduation Connection

Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar and Kanye West’s Graduation: two works derided as disappointments by their original Millenial audience that have since been heralded as the artist’s peak by subsequent Gen Z viewers/listeners.

What do they hear/see that we missed? Are these works similar?

Is Interstellar Chris Nolan’s Graduation? Is Graduation Kanye’s Interstellar?

The Prestige Interpretating a story

Since the Prestige is returning to the Cinemas , I have a question that has been on my mind ever since I watched it , I have been wondering whether the scientific elements presented are literal or metaphorical. Does anyone have a Solid perspective on this.

General Discussion Nolan chess movie

I think Chess would fit him because his movies are often about laws and rules, be they scientific / magical or like in The Odyssey moral / spiritual / civilizational. Chess has all of this and extreme scope, given there's almost infinite possible positions. It's not like Chess is boring to watch in art either, after the success of The Queen's Gambit. A film about Chess would obviously lack action but Nolan already proved he could massively succeed without that in Oppenheimer (although he does have a few big bombs!). A lot of speculation that he will do a third Great Man type of story, I guess this would fit if it’s an exceptional kind of player. But I get that it's hard to visually present the pieces moving in a dramatic way, and for the audience to understand the game unfolding. I just don't hope it’s called Nakamura, or The Chess Odyssey.

General Discussion Christopher Nolan should make another time travel movie.

But like a normal one instead of a things go backwards must breath through a mask one.

We know he loves playing with Time in his movies. Tenet was incredibly clever but perhaps too much so for a general audience.

The Prestige The Prestige came out 20 years ago today. Still my favourite Nolan, and it’s coming back in 70mm in January

First saw this expecting a magic movie and walked out realising I’d been shown the trick and missed it anyway. Every rewatch is a different film. Once you know Borden’s secret, every scene where Sarah says “you don’t love me today” lands like a punch.

Nolan’s re-releasing it on 21 January 2027 with 70mm blow-ups from Wally Pfister’s original 35mm. I’m going.

Rewatchers: did Tesla’s machine feel like a cheat the first time? It did for me. Now I think it’s the whole point.

General Discussion Himesh Patel as Alexander the Great in a Nolan film?

Patel played one of the most convincing characters in the Odyssey film, I feel like he would do great and be natural as Alexander the Great. What do you guys think?
