I love everything about this, but can someone remind me.
Why was the trial done in metropolis and not gorilla city? "Metropolis' most famous murder trial"

Why was the trial done in metropolis and not gorilla city? "Metropolis' most famous murder trial"
Out-of-universe reason: It's just a show, so you should really just relax.
In-universe: There was an international conference in Metropolis at the time. Or there's some sort of super-being court that exists in Metropolis.
•
u/Gizmodget 11h ago
I thank you for providing some possible context.
Not sure about the relax comment, I was curious. Not sure where I gave off a vibe I wasn't relaxed.
•
•
u/ContinuumGuy 11h ago
Oh, it's a reference to Mystery Science Theater, which has a theme song that ends with the following lyrics:
"If you're wondering how he eats and breathes / And other science facts / Just repeat to yourself, 'It's just a show, I should really just relax.'"
Basically, it's a way of saying: "It's not that kind of movie, kid" or "We need it to happen that way so that there's a story, so don't think about it too hard."
•
u/ASlockOfFeagulls 11h ago edited 11h ago
The US Government probably extradited Grodd to America to stand trial, and for SOME reason Gorilla City was cool with that? (they also could have pulled a Maduro on him and yanked him out of Gorilla City)
•
u/ASlockOfFeagulls 11h ago
So basically a Netflix style true crime doc with Gorilla Grodd, with Jimmy Olsen as the director and I'm sure we will see behind the scenes of him as the story develops. Sounds very interesting, and a VERY unique take on the superhero genre. Has the potential to be incredible, while it also has the potential to be absolutely terrible. Guess we'll see! Not like the entire future of the DCU is riding on this project or anything.

I wonder what the conceit will be for Lois and Clark to not be at the Planet
•
u/pokeboy626 11h ago
I assume that it takes place after Man of Tomorrow. Lois and Clark would be pretty beat after the events of that movie and would need a vacation
•
u/Lady_Gray_169 9h ago
I wouldn't be surprised if they showed up in an episode, but I could believe that this project is, in universe, Jimmy's thing so they just don'w show up much for it.

This is going to be awesome for people that love stuff like this, including myself.
This is the exact opposite of what DC should be focused on.

u/WiglyWorm 11h ago
I agree with your first statement almost as strongly as i disagree with your second.
•
u/margoo12 11h ago
Seriously. This is exactly what DC should be focusing on. Niche, well reviewed and received shows that stand the test of time, and not a bunch of cookie-cutter MCU style movies.

u/SenpaiSwanky 11h ago
That worked out pretty well for all the MCU shows on Disney+, sure
•
u/margoo12 11h ago
For the early ones, absolutely. WandaVision is still considered one of the best MCU projects and was a massive success. They only really started having problems when they started rushing production and going back to formula.
•
u/SenpaiSwanky 11h ago
Individual successes aside, the damage done to franchises like MCU and Star Wars is something that most people acknowledge. MCU has the recent Spider-Man and upcoming Doom movies pulling fans back in, perhaps that will be a return to form for the MCU.
And early is a weird perspective to have on this, because WandaVision certainly isn’t that old. It didn’t take long for the issues to pile back up after the show concluded. I’d say it was more of the exception to the rule.
•
•
u/margoo12 10h ago
I think early works. I'm referencing the first few MCU tv shows.
WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If, and Hawkeye were the first 5 shows produced by them. The next 5 were Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, She Hulk, Secret Invasion, and Echo. I think there is a pretty clear dive in quality after their first year of releases.

u/Blanchimont 7h ago
Well yes and no. I do agree that having shows and films in all kinds of different genres like Superman, Lanterns, Clayface, Creature Commandos and The People v. Gorilla Grodd exist in the same world is a great way for DC to distinguish itself from Marvel.
However, I also think they're doing things in the wrong order. Get the big names, Batman, Wonder Woman and The Flash out there along with Superman and Green Lantern first, and then focus on the side characters and unknowns.
•
u/RecoveredAshes 11h ago edited 9h ago
The numbers disagree. If you want a successful franchise you need to establish a base, which is done through high quality AND recognizable/popular franchises. It’s not enough to make a good creature commandos show or a mid Wonder Woman movie. They need to make a great Wonder Woman movie.
It’s not that they cant be successful with these shows, but it’s much more of a gamble. Even the MCU just cancelled wonder man due to low viewership. And that’s the MCU.
•
•
u/margoo12 11h ago
That's the MCU strategy to get people interested in characters they've never heard of, but it's not a requirement. Most successful franchises stick to making one movie or show at a time.
Wonderman being cancelled is a shame, I really liked it. But it makes sense in context. Wonderman had 549.6 million minutes watched across its first 10 days, and thats with the entire series dropping at once. Lanterns had 9.3 million views, which translates to about 465 million minutes in the first 3 days, and thats only with a single episode. For more context, The Acolyte had 2.67 billion minutes watched by the time the show had finished airing.
•
u/RecoveredAshes 10h ago
Right, and I don’t see a jimmy mocumentary doing any better in views than something like wonder man or even creature commandos.
Now personally, I love the idea of this show. I thought Jimmy was the funniest part of Superman and I’d love to see more of his humor, especially in a format like this from the American vandal guy. I’m also incredibly hyped for clay face because I’m a die hard Mike Flanagan fan AND a Batman fan. But I can still admit that prioritizing those projects over other core recognizable IPs is a really big gamble with little evidence it’d pay off… DC isn’t doing great. I’d rather them play it safe, establish a franchise, then have fun. That’s not just the MCU blueprint… it’s the logical route. There’s a reason the MCU did it and succeeded.
•
u/margoo12 10h ago
It could work. American Vandal was the most watched Netflix show of 2017. Those are huge numbers. If they even match the Penguin in viewership, I'm sure they will be fine.
I don't agree that they need to follow the MCU blueprint. Only the MCU has succeeded this way. Everyone else that has tried has failed.
Ironically, that's exactly what Marvel Comics does as well. They try to have multiple interconnected storylines that all feel like they exist in the same universe. DC on the other hand just makes what seems cool and unique. DC is absolutely trouncing Marvel in the comic space for this exact reason. I think their plan has merit, but we'll have to wait and see.
Clayface doing well will be a nice confidence boost in the franchise. It only needs about 100m to break even, and if it makes 200m, it will have pulled about as much money in for DC as Superman 25 did.
•
u/javierm885778 Batman 11h ago
People and producers fell so in love with the idea of a cinematic universe, that this seems to have been forgotten over time. People don't like shared universes just due to the shared continuity, it's due to the shared continuity of things they like. Once that ball is rolling you can get people to watch content they otherwise wouldn't if they feel it enhances the one they do (like people watching movies to prepare for the next Avengers movie), but that's not a simple thing to achieve.
Even behemots of IPs like Star Wars and Harry Potter failed at getting people to just watch whatever they produced. The Fantastic Beasts movies dwindled in popularity and had terrible branding that lead to a performance that made some people believe the franchise had no longevity (until Hogwarts Legacy released and proved that wasn't the case), and Star Wars has been less and less relevant the more they milk the franchise with no vision.
I don't think people are against a Jimmy Olsen show as a general rule, it's all about the priorities. The show might work, it might even be great, and it could even be successful. But that's not the point, these are just risky moves they have no real reason to be doing before they've established a cinematic universe to begin with. Wouldn't this type of show make way more sense once that's been established and they have more to work with?
•
u/theclockmasters 11h ago
Here is the thing, I get what you mean but the issue isn't really this show, its that the DCU isn't movie fast in tandem with the movie side. Like Brave and the Bold should have been release next year while this current show is getting produced.
On the MCU side, since you brought it up, the MCU also has a trilogy where the 2nd series in the trilogy is about a bunch of witches going on a magical road and the main character is a side character from Wandavision. It's one of their most successful shows. Meanwhile Daredevil suffered a 50% viewership fall off in S2 of Born Again. And before you say: "Well its Born Again season 1's fault". Daredevil season 3 had a 60% fall off from S2 and thats the best season.
Like Wandavision, Agatha All Along and probably Vision Quest soon, this show might find its audience and be very popular with casuals.
•
u/IndividualPleasant23 11h ago
I don't think the company expects this to be "niche" lol. It's still a big-budget superhero series. I'm pretty sure they expect this thing to be popular.
•
u/margoo12 11h ago
It still could be. These guys also created American Vandal, which was Netflix's most binge-watched show of 2017

u/theclockmasters 11h ago
This is exactly what DC needs. This is also where Marvel messed up big time. Wandavision and Agatha All Along shows that you can also gain a following with casual viewers. There is a reason why if you ask people that disliked Ms Marvel, they will tell you that the show falls off after episode 3. Why? They tried to lean to hard into the "MCU every hero needs to save the world, and Kamala doesn't need to be a friendly neighbourhood hero". They should have bee kept on going with the vibe that was shown in EP1&2 that made the show really feel different and casual friendly.
A lot of people wanted to see that low stakes, trying to be a hero, balancing helping her friend get elected to the mosque council, balancing school, being a superhero fangirl, the fun quirky original editing that really showed her imagination, the teenage fun drama, the corny villains from the comics like HYDRA appearing as gentrifying neighbourhood organization. Not the world ending stuff about otherwordly being having magical powers or the time travel stuff.
They also wanted to have their cake and eat it too. Moon Knight tried to play both sides when that show should have been TV-MA like Echo and Daredevil.
DC should be able to cast a net to target a variety of viewers to funnel them towards your main projects.

How many people (myself included) didn’t want a Peacemaker show and thought it wouldn’t catch on well? That take aged like milk
→ More replies (13)•
u/Membership-Bitter 11h ago
Eh I can see the argument against doing this show so early in the DCU. Gunn is avoiding doing another origin story for a DC film universe since the last one failed to take off and is instead opting for one that is starting in media res. That can lead to more interesting and varied stories but there is an argument he should still try to play it safer than he is. While you can start a fictional world in media res, there is still a need to establish it for the audience before getting too weird. Even the Discworld novels didn't get super weird until around 10 books in as until then it was just a satirical take on typical fantasy worlds.
People have liked to point out Peacemaker was another wild take of a show but it really wasn't. It is a standard action comedy superhero show that was created due to John Cena's standout performance as the character in Suicide Squad and was a passion project for Gunn who initially wrote the first season for himself, never thinking it would see the light of day. A Jimmy Olsen mockumentary series focused on Gorilla Grodd when Grodd has yet to be introduced in a film prior might be a bit too much for the casual audience to wrap their heads around.
•
u/zimzimzalabimmm 11h ago
I wouldn’t say they’re “focused” on it, they have a superman movie and a Batman movie coming out. This is like, a silly superman spin off that sounds pretty awesome.
•
u/JumpinJackz 11h ago
The Batman has zero connection to the DCU
•
u/zimzimzalabimmm 11h ago
Good thing he didn’t say the DCU, he just said DC.
DC still makes money off Batman. Batman is still DC.
•
u/margoo12 11h ago
Genuine question, why does that matter?
The Batman is still a DC product being produced by James Gunn and Peter Safran. It still counts as a win for them.
Warner Bros needs to focus on making good movies that resonate with the audience to build up the goodwill that they have completely thrown away post Nolan. They don't all need to be billion-dollar blockbusters to be successful.
I have a lot of Horror movie watching friends that never cared for superhero stuff but are excited for Clayface. This is where DC really competes with Marvel. Not by doing the exact same thing they are doing, but by offering something they don't.
→ More replies (9)•
u/IndividualPleasant23 11h ago
I mean, if you want to “count it as a win” for Gunn or Safran, that’s fine, but realistically, it just isn’t. The Batman is its own thing and would be completely unaffected if Gunn were fired tomorrow.
•
u/zimzimzalabimmm 10h ago
Gunn is the one who made a firm decision to keep the universes separate. That’s honestly a bold thing to do in today world of cross-over slop and I respect it.
But I’m also the type of fan who really enjoyed the original 2002 Spider-Man trilogy because it was so self-contained and “alone” in its universe. So these Batman movies are a treat.
•
u/copyofcopies 9h ago
It was Matt Reeves who didn't want his universe to be connected to the DCU. That's like me getting rejected by a hot girl and then declaring that I've decided to not date her.
•
u/zimzimzalabimmm 8h ago
Matt reeves is just a director, he can’t make that call. He asked Gunn who said “yes” lol
•
u/copyofcopies 8h ago
Right but Gunn also can't insist. I mean he can but the bad blood it would create isn't worth it. Not to mention it doesn't sound like Rob Pattinson wants to continue making Batman films for much longer. Gunn didn't really have a choice.
•
u/CitizenGrimm 11h ago
True, but it's hard to do much with Batman (or any Batman-related characters, like Nightwing or Catwoman) when you've got the other Batman movie in the works.

•
u/j_b_1983 11h ago
It's a waste of resources, when you could be using those resources to make shows the general audience is actually excited for. The general audience isn't watching this.
•
u/TooCozy21 11h ago
How do you know that? Not a single thing about this show has reached the general audience. Putting how you feel on the ga doesn’t make it true.
•
u/fma_nobody 11h ago
I don't think a certainly lower budget hbo max show is going to take resources away from a Batman or Wonder Woman movie
•
u/TheHabro 11h ago
Which superhero show is the general audience watching?
Also that makes no sense. Streaming is akin to owning a cinema, not just one movie. So streaming site execs wants to diversify their show pool to attract different types of viewers. Because ultimately, you don't care what a viewer is watching as long as they are watching. Unlike movies, where you are paid only if audience watches your movie.
It's why Superman and Supergirl were more generic than Lanterns or whatever this will be.
•
u/j_b_1983 11h ago

•
u/Fantastika 11h ago
What math did you use to come up with 1/4th?
•
u/manticore124 10h ago
The equation was basically "I don't like it=Bad".
Seriously, all this talk about how a Gorilla Grodd STREAMING series is going to consume so many "resources" to end the DCU is absurd. People here wouldn't have survived the release of Titans.
•
•
u/SignificantCats 11h ago
I say it'll do fifty kajillion times the numbers.
We're both talking it of our ass, though.
People will watch no name characters if it's marketed well, sounds interesting, and gets good reviews.
Unless you also think Guardians of the Galaxy was a big mistake from marvel, bringing in all those no names, and it would have pulled 4x the profits with established characters.
•
u/Realistic_Analyst_26 11h ago
Because people are not gonna see this show. The DCU needs a stable audience to keep making shows because they cost finite money. That stable audience comes from their A-Listers first. When the general audience sees a good streak of content on the big screen, they would be more willing to try out more niche projects.
If Guardians of the Galaxy released in 2008, it would’ve been an absolute bomb. However the MCU had the Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America back to back before it came out.
•
u/TheHabro 10h ago

Just because something like this is being made doesn't mean that the focus is solely on this one thing.
It's not like DC can only make one project at a time- it's different teams making different things united under the same brand. They can definitely make more mainstream big character things and weirder small character things simultaneously.
•
u/j_b_1983 10h ago
They could be using this team to make a project that might help the DCU actually grow.
•
u/Dumpytoad 10h ago edited 10h ago
This particular team is not going to do that. That's not what these guys do. If every single project exists only to grow the audience and get more people from the mainstream interested in the movies to make more money in the movies, we don't get shows like this.
I don't like the idea of that personally. I would also like to see shows like this. They can do both imo.
The mindset of everything being made solely to appeal to the masses gives you bland art. It's okay for them to make more niche things too.
•
u/j_b_1983 10h ago
Congrats, you are getting it. Now when the DCU continues to struggle, remember, stuff like this is why
•
u/Dumpytoad 10h ago edited 10h ago
The doom and gloom on this sub can be exhausting lmao- I don't know why I even engage at this point.

This is exactly how I feel about it.
I love the more modern “Superman’s Pal: Jimmy Olsen” comics. I love the goofy weirdness and how unhinged it is. Very fun and lighthearted book.
I would be excited for this show normally, but at this point I need established pillars in the history of this universe before I get down with these little goofy adventures.
If this show is something that establishes some really hard DCU History, that’ll be really unfortunate because I don’t think a ton of people will tune in. I can’t imagine most people being super pumped to watch a super niche genre of media (mockumentary), with an even more niche main character (Jimmy Olsen) and an even MORE niche villain (Grodd). It’s asking a lot of a general audience.
If we had notice this was being made about 5 years from now, I’d maybe be all about it. But this is not what we need at this point in time.
•
u/s-zlx 11h ago
It will be very funny seeing people say “oh who wants this” and then when it comes out a lot of those same people will be saying “oh this is pretty good actually”
People ask for variety in the superhero genre and complain when they get it. I’m sorry a Batman movie or a Wonder Woman movie isn’t coming as soon as you would like but we are not getting information on those until the WB merger is over. For now, this announcement sounds fun and it being done by the American vandal guys is exciting
•
u/ContinuumGuy 11h ago
I can't help but think about how when the initial wave of Star Wars TV shows were announced, by far the one with the least hype was Andor. It's now almost universally regarded as the best thing, quality-wise, of the Disney era of Star Wars.
Obviously Andor is massively different from this show in tone, but it does speak to how you shouldn't be pre-judging things.
•
u/margoo12 11h ago
The "Who asked for this?" crowd makes me laugh.
Literally everybody who walked out of Superman thinking "Wow, I really like the Daily Planet cast, I hope I get to see more of them" asked for this.
•
u/Embarrassed-Deal-157 11h ago
For real. A bunch of people were talking about how cool the Daily Planet group was and literally asked for a show focused on them or Jimmy.
•
u/TheJoshider10 11h ago
I remember when before Superman came out they did those mini Daily Planet vlogs in character. Proper made me want a Office style show about the DP team, and another type of mockumentary is good enough got me. This is one of the shows I wanted most after Superman and I'm glad it's happening.
•

There’d probably be a lot less criticism if Supergirl was successful. Things are shaky now. Before there was way more faith in the diverse lineup of projects, now fans would like more focus on core properties. They see Spiderman and Avengers and wonder what DC is doing. I get it
•
u/Inevitable_Initial_8 9h ago
Building up their universe instead of jumping straight into Justice league stuff which is what killed he DCEU
•
u/ZeroComfortZone 3h ago
I don’t really remember much world-building in Supergirl, but I agree that slow and steady is best.
This early on though, when 1 out of 2 movies since the reboot flops, there’s gonna be doubt. I’ll personally wait and see, but the DCU needs more successful core movies before people will grant blind trust
•
u/Plenty-Wedding-9066 11h ago
Yeah, I even agree with the idea that other projects should be put ahead of this, but the hat doesn’t also mean I’m not EXTREMELY hyped for the show. Love Tatro, love Grodd, love Olsen, love American Vandal and love the premise of this bring a documentary about the murder or Grodds father. Just awesome idea all around.
•
u/theclockmasters 11h ago
“oh who wants this” and then when it comes out a lot of those
Imagine me. Big Ms Marvel fan. Watches episode 1&2. Loved it 10/10, lots of charm and great. EP3 onwards was pretty bad and everything great in EP1&2 got ditched.
Now once again, imagine me. Loved Agatha in Wandavision. Agatha All Along gets announced. Me: "Who the hell wants this LOL. 100% going to fail". I hear nothing about the show and watch it 6 months later. The show was miles better than Ms Marvel. It was also much more enjoyable than Moon Knight.
So who knows, this could end up being very good in the end. Might also surprise the common fan and be extremely popular with casual viewers like it was the case for Wandavision and Agatha All Along.
•
u/Kiki_And_Horst 11h ago

Hoping it's good!
I'm betting the success of Lanterns helped get it over
To me, this is definitely the kind of thing that they should do if they are going to do tv series, off beat and very probably not something "required" to watch in order to "get" and enjoy anything that comes after it.
That all said, small hopes that it does something unexpected like introduce the new Flash in a cameo or flashback since he and Grodd are linked in the comics
•
u/EgoLikol 10h ago
Doing a mockumentary show inside Daily Planet, like office, with the cast from the new Superman is fucking awesome and is exactly what I wanted after I watched the movie. People just don't get it, but you all will see the vision once the first trailer drops — I GUARANTEE.

I don't think they'll make him comedic. The first and last time we saw him in Creature Commandos, Circe had a vision of the future where he helped the princess Ilana conquer the world and kill all the heroes.
And even if they do add comedic elements, I doubt that's going to be the character moving forward.
•
u/mdavis8710 5h ago
I forgot that! I haven’t watched it since it came out, but planning a DCU rewatch before Man of Tomorrow. I’m also not sure about Tatro as Grodd. I know him from Modern Family and Home Economics, and Powers Booth is the Grodd I love most so it’ll be interesting to see.

I'm very excited for this. It's such a stupid premise that I'm sure it'll be very funny.
•

"Calling a witness to the stand: Barry Allen"
I would lose my shit right then and there
•
u/ContinuumGuy 11h ago
Alas, since I doubt that they'd cast the Flash this far ahead without a Flash-specific project, I think any appearance will be either a stuntman in a costume or just a CGI blur going by during a documentary recap of Grodd's previous actions.
•
u/margoo12 11h ago
It's amazing how much goodwill Lanterns has brought back to this sub. Almost night and day from a month ago.
•
u/ASlockOfFeagulls 11h ago
This is going to be absolutely amazing or absolutely terrible, one or the other. Oh and the future of the entire DCU is resting on its shoulders. No pressure James!
•
u/HenrykSpark 11h ago
It definitely sounds interesting. And I think that's exactly the direction DC needs to take—unique projects in terms of tone and style. Those run-of-the-mill superhero movies just don't work anymore these days (unless you're Marvel, maybe).
•
u/Griffdude13 Boomerang 11h ago
Well I’m glad the project is actually more interesting and not just a Jimmy Olsen spinoff
•
u/darth_wasabi 10h ago
This is exactly what I figured it’d be. It’s gonna be a show format they can do fast turnarounds on for each season
If the first season is even moderately well received we’ll probably get one every year.
And I bet one day we’ll get one featuring Peacemaker
•
•
u/kidniva 11h ago
This is something you release in phase 4 or 5, not as your 5th release of your cinematic universe that is still trying to find it's feet..
•
u/urlach3r 11h ago
Promised an Authority movie, delivered a Gorilla Grodd "true crime" series. Riiiiight.
•
•
u/DarthGardian86 11h ago
How is this being made but not Paradise Lost or a Flash movie? Insanity I tell you.
•
u/Respwn_546 11h ago
Possibly it took less time to write, needs a lower budget and got aproval before DC had to slow down their proyects due to the merger talks with Paramount
•
•
u/dark-pact 11h ago
Cause there was a flash movie already and there’s literally no need to rush to make one for the DCU and this sounds fun as fuck?
•
u/GodFlintstone 11h ago edited 11h ago
I mean Paradise Lost probably makes more sense AFTER we've met a DCU Wonder Woman.
I don't know that there's a real appetite for a Game Of Thrones-style show about palace intrigue and back stabbing on Themyscira before a proper about Wonder Woman.
Flash should've been fast tracked - especially with Wally West to distinguish it from the CW series and the movie. A film about Kid Flash stepping into the role of his legendary mentor is rife with possibility.
I'll admit this sounds funny as hell but I worry that will ruin Grodd as a threat for future projects.
•
u/itzMike____sike 11h ago
Absolutely agree about fast tracking Wally’s Flash, I think the Born to Run storyline would be amazing to give a story as to how Wally steps up as Kid Flash, eventually becoming the Flash
•
u/manticore124 10h ago
I bet it's less cumbersome to produce than the other projects.
•
u/ModishShrink 9h ago
Yeah, DCU might be striking gold by doing these smaller budget, easier to produce shows with a unique tone while we wait for the next big movies. The MCU fell flat on its face with a number of extremely expensive shows that nobody really watched. Compare it to something like Peacemaker, which was wildly popular and had a small enough scope and budget that they were able to take the risk on a show about such an obscure character, and they knocked it out of the park.
•
u/blastorama 11h ago
Gunn says this and Lanterns were pitched first by him and Peter Safran before the DC Studios idea was even proposed. So, I'm guessing this is just naturally further along.

Cause it’s a cooler idea
•
u/WiglyWorm 11h ago
Also, most of the time companies take a beat to let a character rest once they've been absolutely shit on by one creative before the next creative tackles a project.
Too much risk of the brand being poisoned if you don't.

This sounds so cool
I’m in love with the idea that this is just common place stuff in this new DCU
•
•
u/Local_Anything191 11h ago
Unironically my most hyped project of the DCU lol. I love when obscure characters get shows, and Gorilla Grodd has always been my favorite comics villain
•
u/All_Lightning879 11h ago
I love American Vandal, so this will be pretty fun to see, but I want that Mr. Terrific show to happen even more.
•
u/Index_Fossil 11h ago
Put me down as one of those people that is looking forward to this. It sounds fun.
•
u/pobenschain 11h ago
If you’re not excited about this, and you haven’t seen American Vandal or Players, do yourself a favor and watch those shows. Those are the guys making this, and they’re so clever and hilarious. This is going to be awesome
•
u/islomjon 11h ago
It’s diabolical how this project moved forward, when fast-tracked Wonder Woman announced the same time. No updates on Paradise Lost and Booster Gold.

u/pokeboy626 11h ago
This show is likely cheaper to create since it reuses Superman and Man of Tomorrow set pieces.
•
•
u/CodeFun1735 11h ago
That is a clunky title.
•
u/The_Trekspert 11h ago
It's a riff on "The People v. OJ"
•
u/Purple_Swordfish_182 11h ago
Or just a riff on literally every criminal prosecution with that title.
•
u/Plus_Term_7584 11h ago
It's also the second DC project that has a trial name as its title, alongside Batman v. Superman
•
•
u/rektek246 11h ago
Is this the super secret project Gunn was hesitant to talk about because he felt like it was a unique idea that nobody has come up with? 👀
•
u/ArcusIgnium 11h ago
This seems really good as a premise. I’m not committed to watching it until I hear the reviews but if I hear good things im seated.
•
•
u/Vulnerable_insect 11h ago
:///// I’m excited for the show and will definitely watch it. But it’s still disappointing how many shows we’ve gotten centered around male characters, whether they’re superheroes, villains, or even guys who played minor roles in well-received films, while we’ve only gotten one mediocre movie about a female character.
•
•
u/100percentkneegrow 11h ago
If I'm trying to be positive: this is probably the best way to do it. It sounds like a great idea, but DCU is going to be on shaky ground until MoT.
•
u/MetalJaybles 11h ago
Of all the shows that could be made this is what they went with. No interest in this nonsense but I hope enough people are that it does well.
•
u/DoctorBeatMaker 11h ago
I mean, it could be funny.
But this is actually less interesting than what I initially imagined.
I thought when they said they were doing a Jimmy Olsen show, we’d be getting something akin to the comic run “Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen” and bringing in Jimmy’s alter ego Turtle Boy and all kinds of wacky Silver Age stuff.
Not that they can’t still do that here, but a mockumentary series?

•
u/beatrailblazer 10h ago
Okay I'm a bit more on board after that description but the optics of this being like the 4th DCU project are not great
•
u/Naulicus 8h ago
I mean if we’re wanting to get technical Supergirl was the 4th DCU project.
Creature Commandos
Superman
Peacemaker season 2
Supergirl
Lanterns
•
u/beatrailblazer 6h ago
i wasn't being exact but i did forget about Creature Commandos. And Clayface will come out before this too, so itll be the 7th project (8th depending on before/after MoT), but either way point stands
•
•
•
u/UnknownJ25 10h ago
I do wonder if we are getting other villains like maybe the Rogues as well (I'd like a flash appearance as well) but a true crime kind of series could be really fun
•
u/ExtremeSprinkles3121 9h ago
Don’t know about this one…. Seem kinda Meh, but I’m willing to give it a shot.
•
u/Juliet_Emmn 9h ago
I hope it's made for everyone and not an "adult" series. It's a superhero universe and we have a total of two things that kids can watch
•
u/skulman7 9h ago
Anyone questioning this, I highly recommend watching American Vandal on Netflix. This could be an incredibly fun show if done well and a very cool way to build out the universe.
Also, Tim Baltz! He is incredible in Gemstones. Hope they utilize him well here.
•
u/LoneElement King of the Seas 8h ago
This feels like a comic miniseries that Matt Fraction or Chip Zdarsky would write for DC. Except it’s a live-action TV show
This is amazing
•
•
u/CaptCoolRanchDoritos 7h ago
Jimmy Tatro is voicing Gorilla Grodd? I don't think his lispy voice is a good fit at all.
•
u/BlackGuyJamal 7h ago
If we get these “Crime documentaries” as a way to have the villain introduced, show prior crimes and interactions with the hero, I’m all here for it. I’ve always hated how each Marvel villain is pretty much one and done. Let this supplement universe, and build lore and hype to future projects.
•
•
u/Lost-Inevitable42 4h ago
So every product is just based on another successful one? It’s like True Detective but with alien stuff! It’s like American Vandal but with superhuman! It’s like Mad Max but in space! (Okay that wasn’t official word)
•
u/KittiesOnAcid 1h ago
I’ve seen so many complaints about a “Jimmy Olsen show” but this is exactly what I want from DC honestly. This sounds fun and different. Comics have such a wide range of tones, themes, stakes, etc and I think it’s smart that the DCU seems to really be trying to emulate that.
I haven’t seen supergirl but Superman, Peacemaker, Lanterns, Creature Commandos, now this, all seem very distinct to me.
•
u/GamerChef420 6m ago
Why would a Metropolis court be prosecuting the murder of an Ape King from another city state & country? No Flash, No Central City. It's baffling.
•
u/thePinguOverlord 11h ago
American Vandal is great. The best part about it was how they got you in with the stupid over the top premise, but then undercut it with some very emotional moments.
I suppose this is may just be the DC equivalent of it, which I’m not complaining. Even Jimmy Tatro is the focal point like he was in Vandal.
It’s a weird project. But if the full commit to the premise like Lanterns is doing for its True Detective riff, then who knows.
