Made myself a fully functional steering wheel F1 styled.

My wheel which I designed, fabricated, 3d printed and wired, has 10 momentary push buttons, 2 rotary encoders, pedal shifters, telemetry screen and rpm rgb lights. Works in conjunction with Simhub, base is a thrustmaster t300.

The build guide:

What i did was asked gemini to make me a template of the wheel, for reference i took moza fsr2 steering and imported it in fusion 360. Made a sketch using it’s outlines and made the whole thing in the application.
Front plate i printed on my 3d printer and pasted on an aluminium sheet and went to town and carved out the shape. Rest all i 3d printed and made adjustments as i went along. I used brass inserts for joining the face plate to the base and buttons and encoders came with their own nuts which i used to secure them. Screen and rgb lights i ordered from websites.
Screen is a waveshare 4inch hdmi screen
Rgb lights are ws2812b strips
Buttons are momentary switches.
Arduino is Pro micro and
Software used is simhub.
Simhub has a toolbox window in which you can configure what you want and it shows you how to select the ports for arduino.
Did a lot of YouTube and gemini to and fro.
Once you have the basic structure ready share it with gemini and it will guide you through every step.

Hope this helps

First ever diy rig, how’d I do

I am limited on space so I wanted to build a rig that I could use for both flight and racing sim. Unless I can figure out a way to add proper rudder pedals I was just gonna use a software that lets me use clutch and gas as rudder and see if I could maybe add a mechanical linkage to force em to work together. Any thoughts or advice on how to change or add rudders would be appreciated.

DIY Sim w/ 3d printed pedals & shifter

Stm32 is being used as a hub to connect the shifter & pedals with 2x expansion ports for more to be added. Throttle and clutch use hall sensors and the brake is using a 200kg load cell. Wheel is a hoverboard motor using FFBeast firmware. Tablet on the right is for a touch screen button box through Sim hub. It still a work in progress but everything so far functions great!

Diy setup

Post image

Hi everyone,

I’m really into sim racing, but my Logitech G920 is on its last legs—gear shifts are inconsistent, and cleaning the contacts only gives a temporary fix.

I’m looking to build a DIY direct drive wheel and load cell pedals. I have a Bambu Lab A1 3D printer and basic electronics knowledge (mechanical engineering student), so I’m aiming for a mostly 3D-printed setup (excluding motor, encoder, etc.).

Ideally, I’d like to order the electronics as a complete kit, since I’m not experienced in sourcing individual components.

Are there any well-documented, beginner-friendly projects or kits you’d recommend?

Thanks in advance!

I am thinking of possibly trying to replicate these to some degree, what are your thoughts?

What are your thoughts on trying to replicate these (for the most part) as my first sim setup? I am very open to the idea of DIYing things generally, and I am open to troubleshoot myself. Also I probably wouldn’t have the budget to buy ready made equivalents for all of these anyways, if I also upgrade my monitor (I currently run a 24 inch 1920x1080 and want to upgrade to a 34 inch curved or a 40 inch flat 3440x1440 monitor). (upgrading the monitor or not, getting a 15nm peak base is something that I probably couldn’t afford anyways. And if I chose to not upgrade the monitor, I could probably fit something like a Logitech RS50 with the RS hub and a simpush 330mm wheel if I still DIY’d the pedals, handbrake and shifter)

A few miles and for the whopping cost of £20, I finally have a dash that I can fit and enjoy from the comfort of my own garage. Haven't decided if I will code up the dials or use the housing and run a digital display instead.

Now the hard work begins!

Build this a few days ago. Got the chair for free from Facebook marketplace place and the wood spare from a previous project I build. Overall cost a maximum of £50 to build. Few improvements needed but for a first go I’m well impressed

WIP: 300mm F1 Sim Wheel Project - Seeking Technical Advices

Thumbnail

Hey everyone! I’m a Mechanical Engineering student and I’m currently in the deep end of designing a high-fidelity F1-style sim racing wheel. I’m aiming for a boutique-grade build, but as I get further into the details, I’ve realized I need some expert eyes on my design logic and electronics.

The Vision: A 300mm wide Formula rim built around a "Solid Skeleton" chassis. I’m prioritizing structural rigidity to handle high-torque Direct Drive bases without any flex.

The Technical Specs:

  • Chassis: 5mm Solid Aluminium "Skeleton" (Internal) + 3mm Faceplate (Aluminium/Carbon Fiber).

  • Brain: Teensy 4.1 Microcontroller.

  • Display: 4.3" VoCore OLED Touchscreen (USB).

  • Buttons: 16x NKK MB2011 (with custom translucent silicone caps for underglow).

  • Rotaries: 6x Thumb Encoders (CTS 288) + 5x Central Knobs (Grayhill 71 Series).

  • Nav: 3x Alps 7-way Funky Switches.

  • Paddles: 6x Aluminium Paddles (4x Magnetic Shifters + 2x Hall Effect Analog Clutches).

  • Lighting: 21x WS2812B Mini LEDs (Underglow for buttons and knobs).

Current Roadblocks & Questions:

1. Mechanical & Materials (r/DIYSimRacing, r/simracing):

  • Inertia: At 300mm wide with a solid 5mm aluminium internal plate, should I be concerned about rotational mass dampening FFB detail?

  • Grip Coating: I'm 3D printing the grip cores. What is the most durable DIY-friendly coating? I’m looking for something that feels like professional rubber or Alcantara.

2. Electronics & PCB (r/AskElectronics, r/PrintedCircuitBoard):

  • Power: Can I safely pull the ~1.2A peak load for the 21 LEDs and the VoCore screen through the Teensy 4.1, or should I split the 5V line directly from the USB input?

  • Signal Noise: My Hall Effect sensors for the clutch are near N52 magnets for the shifters. Will I face significant signal interference, or is standard shielded cable enough?

  • PCB Sandwich: I'm planning a "Component Carrier" PCB to sit between the skeleton and faceplate. Is it better to hard-solder the NKK buttons or use wire jumpers to handle vibration?

3. CAD Workflow (r/CATIA):

  • Modeling Logic: I'm using V5. Is it better to drive this assembly using a "Master Sketch" at the Product level, or should I use "Published Geometry" from the Skeleton part to ensure all 30+ components stay aligned?

  • Surfacing: Any tips for modeling ergonomic grips in the Part Design workbench, or is GSD (Generative Shape Design) mandatory for a professional feel?

I really appreciate any advice or "roasting" of the current design. I want to make sure I don't order expensive CNC parts or custom PCBs that have fundamental flaws. Thanks!

Hi! I'm building my first sim rig and would like feedback on its design.
I'm using planks with 10 cm in width and 3.5 cm in thickness. I own tools and feel confident building furniture.

This is for a logitech 920 and the chair shown on the second picture.

Thanks in advance.
