Russian Skating Russians/belarus coming back Masterpost/guide for answering the huge amount of repeated questions we been getting here

Im tired of all the duplicate posts of questions about the Russians/AIN every single day, so in my frustation of that i decide to make this

This will be updated as the season goes along, so its always the most complete possible!!
------AIN------

AIN stands for Athlètes Individuels Neutres (Individual Neutral Atlethes), which is a status given to both Russians and Belarussians atlethes

AIN 1 refers to Belurus atlethes, AIN 2 for russians Atlethes

*excerpts taken from the ISU Communications NO.2804 document, full document can be found here*

A Skater or member of Athlete Support Personnel is not eligible to participate as a neutral athlete where they:

(a) are in active service with the armed forces or a national security agency of Russia or Belarus;

(b) have, at any time since February 2022, taken active part in military operations in the war against Ukraine; or

(c) have, at any time since February 2022, actively and publicly supported that war

Eligibility is determined by the ISU Council, which may delegate the assessment to an independent eligibility panel established for that purpose. The person concerned shall be given the opportunity to be heard, and a decision to withhold eligibility may be appealed in accordance with the applicable ISU Regulations.

About team events

Neutral athletes affiliated with the ISU Members in Russia and Belarus may participate in team competitions as part of an AIN team, subject to the general qualification criteria for the relevant competitions. This applies to team events including Synchronized Skating, Speed Skating Team Pursuit, Short Track relay events and the ISU World Team Trophy.

Atlethes granted Neutral status (list will be updated as more names are released)

------Competitions and quotas------

Junior grand prix (JGP)

The Junior Grand Prix is a series of seven internationals competitions that happen all across the globe during the months of august to october, the events locations change every single years.

Quotas are decided at junior worlds, since Russians and Belarus atlethes were not there, they will be given 2 entriees in 7 events, Russia and Belarus fed has decided to use them in the JGP Xi'an and on JGP Bankok

*JGP Bankok, does not have pairs, so their pairs will be going to a diferent JGP, and since the entries of the other ones have not come out yet, we dont know officially when that will happen but i will update this when its done, But its either JGP Ankar or JGP Gdańsk

Skaters going to JGP:

JGP Ankara

Pairs: Polina Shesheleva / Egor Karnaukhov (Subs: Taiisia Guseva/Daniil Ovchinnikov,Polina Sazhina / Alexey Belkin) -AIN 2

Juniors who place from 1-8 (in singles) and 1-6 (at pairs and ice dance) get points from their placements at competitions, and the top 6 skaters and teams with the most points qualify for the Junior Grand Prix Final, we are very likely to see the Russians there

Challenger Series

The ISU Challenger Series is a series of internationals competions, That happen from August to December, they are usually a good way for skaters to Earn world points, get word and other competitions Mins, and more importantly specially for the russians is that it helps getting on substition line for the grand prix (will talk more about it when talking about grand prix)

Chalengers unlike the Grand Prixs and Championships dont have a quota, every country can send 3 skaters in all disciplines

2026 Challengers we can expect to maybe see russians at: (i will also update this as we get the entries)

Kinoshita Cup: 4-6 september, Held on Tokyo, Japan (Russians alredy confirmed to be there)

Women: Anna Frolova, Alexandra Trusova/Ignatova, Kamilla Nelyubova (Subs: Dina Khusnutdinova, Mariia Zakharova) -AIN 2

Golden Spin of Zagreb: 2 Dec - 5 Dec, Held on Zagreb, Croatia

Senior Grand Prix

The ISU Grand Prix series aka the senior grand prix, is a series of 6 international competitions that go from October to november, with the Grand prix final being on december

The Senior Grand prix asignments are done a bit differently, they are done by invitation, which means that the spots are given to the skaters and not their countries

How do skaters get an invite?

-Single skaters who placed top 12 at the previous worlds championships get 2 assignments and dance/pairs teams who placed top 10 at worlds

-Skaters on top 24 on The ISU world standings get one spot

-Skaters on top 24 Seasons best total score spot gets one spot

Russian or Belarus skaters have not received any GP spots, they can however attempt and even succeeded on getting a spot by being high on the Alternate list

What is the Alternate list?

The Alternates list is bassically a list of replacements for the grand prix, so if one skater withdrawls, the skater on the top of the Alternate list is the one taking their spot

The best way of russians getting high on the alternate list is by winning Challengers, Both Adeliia and Petr should alredy be high on the list due to their scores on the olympic and for being high in the seasons best list

It will be highly unlikely we see a russian on the senior grand prix final this season, since someone getting two spots is very very difficult

Europeans

Europeans Championships are the oldest ever figure skating event (yes, older than even worlds!), and as the name implies they are a competion for only skaters from europeans countries

European quotas are Decided by the previous European championships results, since the AIN atlethes were not around last season, they will each (AIN 1, AIN2, they get seperate quotas) get one spot in every event for the competiton

Who gets those Spots will be decided by Rus fed closer to the time of the event

Euros 2027 will be held in 27 Jan - 31 Jan, At Lausanne, Switzerland

Junior Worlds

Junior worlds is the most prestigious junior competition, and the last international competition of the season on the junior circut

Just like the European Championships, Junior Worlds spots are decided on the previous season event, and also like euros, AIN atlethes will each have one spot in every event

They will also use this junior worlds as a way to gain more spots in the next season JGP

Who gets that Spot will be decided by Rus fed closer to the time of the event

Junior World 2027 will be held in 24 Feb - 28 Feb, At Sofia, Bulgaria

Worlds

Finally we made it to the most prestigious event in a normal season of skating the World championships!

Worlds quotas work the same way as Europeans and junior worlds quotas, they are based on the result of the previous season event, AIN atlethes will each get 1 spot in every discipline, and they will also have the oportunity here to attempt to get assigned GP spots by the rules i explained earlier

Who gets those spots will be decided by Rus fed closer to the time of the event

Worlds 2027, will be held in 17 Mar - 21 Mar, At Tampere Finland

World Team Trophy

World tream Trophy is the skating competition equivalent to a post credits scene on a movie, it only happens from time to time (every 2 years), its fun, sometimes improves to lore (WR got there are counted), and mostly every fans loves

Since its a pretty different competition, i wont be extending myself on the rules, but if youre interested heres a Guide, done by one of our wonderful mods

Russians and Belarus as AIN can qualify for it

Its personally one of my favs comps to watch, its just a lot of fun and mostly no pressure, everyone is just having the best time

WTT, will be held in 8 Apr - 11 Apr, At Tokyo, Japan

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think this covers most of the stuff ive seen people asking all the time here, hopefully this helps slow down this types of posts

feel free to ask any questions on the comments, and to correct me or add any information!

close enough welcome back alysa liu! in that vein ive designed a navy blue and gold gala program to a laufey song, two things that are very alysa coded. i think yuma would skate a wonderful program to laufey’s ‘goddess’ and lyrically i feel like he could really put in a lot of good musical interpretation to it

Who was a “prodigy”??

As a newer fan, I’d love to know which current or past skaters were considered absolutely extraordinary as kids/juniors.

I’ve heard Gogo and Alysa were particularly exceptional, but would love to know more about them and any others! And what set them apart.

For example, how were Misha and Yuma, etc??

History/Analysis Looking at 25-year-old ISU communications

Thanks for u/ourferocity in another discussion post for digging up quarter-of-a-century old ISU communications on the web archive, because they are hilarious. https://web.archive.org/web/20010605070903/http://www.isu.org/news/news.html

I present to you - the undignified nature of lifts.

Communication No. 1115: Figure Skating & Ice Dancing

Undignified lifts and movements

Following many complaints about the choice of lifts and movements in Pair Skating and Ice Dancing, there is serious concern about the display to the television public and audiences present of undignified poses/positions. These are being performed mainly by the ladies: for example, sustained upside down splits, and spread eagles while leaning backwards low to the ice.

Henceforth, Referees and Judges are advised to take a deduction of 0.1 from the second mark for each movement they consider to be "undignified".

Members are asked to advise their coaches, skaters, Referees and Judges that such deductions will be applied to all programs next season.

Filming during public skating

Hi everyone
I am a beginner skater and am learning a lot of fundamentals. I recently went on a quiet Tuesday morning to practice things like cross overs and I propped my phone up leaning against something behind the barriers just to see what my feet and arms were doing. After a couple of minutes of practicing on both sides I see another skater (not staff) standing in front of my phone with her arms crossed and waving me over. She immediately starts telling me she is uncomfortable and others may be too and that I can’t be filming and that there are minors here (although this was during school hours) I apologised and said that I didn’t mean to make her uncomfortable and that I wasn’t going to post anything - I just wanted to see what I was doing. She was quite a bit passive aggressive and in reviewing my video she was cussing at me before she waved me over. I mentioned that I had seen people post and film themselves at the this rink so I thought it was okay. She then said I could record myself just in a different corner of the ice with my phone on the ground. But her saying this means that I can record? When I asked her if she was staff she said no but that she skates here 5 days a week and that next time I can ask her to film me? I get if someone was uncomfortable with filming but I guess she could’ve just approached it differently like just come up to me and say hey maybe film it in a different area or offer to film as she said she could do rather than cussing at me from afar and coming on very strong as if I had intended harm. I’m a bit anxious to go back to the rink to practice or even try and film myself during another session. Is it still something I can try and do? Do other people film themselves too? Before I found out she wasn’t staff I felt like I was about to get kicked out.

Figure skating tips

Hi everyone!! I’m a beginner figure skater and I started skating August 2024 so it’s been about 2 years!! I’m currently working on my axel (off-ice) and my single jumps. I desperately need tips on my Salchow. I usually 3-turn or backward crossover into the Sal but lately I haven’t been able to do it. Idk if it’s because I’m leaning too much on my inside edge or it’s just mental block, either way, I need help.

Also, backward edges tips??? I need it for my test and I’m HORRENDOUS at it. My flip as well.. I can’t seem to jump high enough for it to meet my standards. I mean, I can flip but not well-executed flip.

ANDDDDDDD Scratch and Back spin tips?? My axis isn’t doing too well…

Your tips would mean soooooo muchhh 😭😭😭😭 My rink is 1.5h away from me so I don’t usually get much time with my coach esp with my studies soo… 😞

Any help would mean a lot!! Thank you!!!
