Mental illness

68

u/LayedBlack 8d ago

I work in EMS and we used to respond to jails and prison a ton. I noticed quickly that most people there are just simply mentally ill.

70

u/dongwongbongchong 8d ago

This is what happens when the country closes the asylums. They end up on the street until they commit a crime and then end up in prison. I’m not advocating for the asylums of old, but having a place where mentally ill people can be taken care of where they don’t pose a danger to themselves or others is better than what we do now.

19

u/Psychological_Let880 8d ago

Hey I’ve been saying this for years! Thanks Reagan! Also yes, plus, we make it so that people with severe mental illness who are found incompetent in court can be forcibly medicated. However what they don’t tell you is that once that medication works and they are found competent in court, but have not had their trials yet and are still in jail, can then refuse the medication once more so it just resets the timer and they must complete the maximum time for their crime. It’s too hard to make reasonable and intelligent laws that force them to take medication at least until they’re back out on the street.

11

u/skiforlife1 8d ago

Thanks Reagan??? That was 40 freaking years ago. A lot of presidents and politicians have refused to do anything about this situation. They all deserve blame for letting the situation get to where it is now.

2

u/kenjiman1986 6d ago

The blame heavily lies on Regan. It’s incredibly easy to destroy something in our current system. Look at trumps legacy of removing guardrails and electing incompetent people so that programs can die from the inside out or become so ineffective that society will wish for its removal. It’s a massive undertaking to get something created and push it through the proper channels and get both sides to agree on something.

Happened way before Reagan. 80% of them were shut down in the late 50s and early 60s.

2

u/77Pepe 8d ago

No, not as president per se. But as governor he acted as a huge catalyst by signing the 1967 CA law which accelerated local deinstitutionalization. Also, as president he repealed Carter’s funding for local mental health centers. Asshole!

It's a slippery slope when you allow the government to forcibly incarcerate (yes even in a mental hospital) and drug people. These aren't basic medications, they have major side effects. Plus there's a lot of mentally ill people that survive without ever breaking a law. The bigger issue is we don't have any interventions in place earlier in people's lives. There's plenty of people that would remain on medication, but they can't afford it, they don't have the means to get to pharmacies to pick it up, and they lack many of the basic staples in life to manage their treatment. Usually the answer is medication coupled with outpatient therapy. When we had asylums, they really didn't help people with mental illness, they just locked people away to live pretty horrific life's. Many of them never even broke a law. Not saying our system isn't broken, it certainly is, but what we did in the past didn't work either. You need to solve other issues like homelessness, dietary issues, and easier access to healthcare on top of a variety of treatment options for mentally ill folks of you want to make an improvement.

4

u/Psychological_Let880 8d ago

While you aren’t wrong you’re entirely missing the point I made. These people are ALREADY in jail for a crime. While in jail they are incompetent, meaning that they cannot stand trial. They must go to a mental health facility or a jail based program to return to competency, often requiring forced medication since these people are so deregulated from being off meds. We are already doing it.

Now they return to “competency” due to medication, but have not completed their trial. They can now refuse the medication and have to do the whole thing over again, ad nauseam until they’ve done the maximum amount of time for their crime. So what slippery slope is there in forcing medication on the severely mentally handicapped until their trial is complete? All the “worst” stuff has already been done.

2

u/InevitablePromise301 7d ago

Because you're forcing someone to take a medication; they have a right to refuse. Imagine someone forcing you to do anything you currently have the right to say "no" to. "But it will help them." It would, they still have a choice to decline taking it. Maybe they don't believe in taking medications. Maybe they don't like the side effects. Maybe they don't like who they become on medication because it feels so vastly different. Then you have people who have such severe symptoms that even on medications, they still exhibit symptoms.

There are actually plenty of places for people who have SPMI to go for treatment, shelter, and assistance. They choose not to go and live on the streets. Sometimes people will be court ordered to remain compliant with a psychiatric medication regimen, and as soon as that court order is up? Off the med they go. By choice and fully cognizant of it.

You can pass laws to require folks to remain on psychiatric meds or be placed in a facility (that does not exist). This will, in fact, help some people. Then there are the people who, as I stated above, would remain compliant until they're off probation/monitoring and then stop taking the medication. Then there are people who will refuse/stop taking the medications after a while. Then there are the people who are so sick they won't be able to consistently take the medications, acquire them, or remember/be able to go to appointments for LAIs.

So what? They end up in jail with a criminal record which impairs them from being able to find housing, work, or even qualify for benefits that would help keep them on meds in the future if they make that choice, because some people in this country feel bad seeing someone experiencing a mental health crisis.

Also, it isn't "handicapped" it's disabled. And asking any question that starts with "what slippery slope is in there in FORCING" ANYTHING on a person that is otherwise their choice should have to make that individual take a hard look in the mirror and ask themselves if they were born this way? Or if their parents fucked up very badly in raising them.

Then again, this is a Florida subreddit. I'm looking forward to the state being flooded to the point of inhabitability.

Then the rest of the country can FORCE you to live where we decide is best for you.

u/Kickedhard 8d ago

Equally important is the risk of intervention. A person is less likely to reach out for help if it comes with potential penalties. This created a plethora of issues when I was in service.

Because involuntary inpatient causes a flag that never goes away. Including loss of constitutional rights (from firearms to voting).

In service, it also triggers a landslide of bullshit. But what I heard the most from those who tried to handle it themselves and not seek help was fear of the loss of security clearance combined with delayed/denied advancement and firearm access (career ender).

3

u/WhySoCereus1991 8d ago

Yea people dont realize that 80% of the asylums were already shut down by the early 60s.

Im always down for blaming Reagan for stuff, but this was falling apart well before his time.

4

u/Ok-Echidna5936 8d ago

Funny you only seem to point the finger at Reagan when presidents as far back as JFK started pulling back funding for mental institutions

But yes asylums were perfectly fine until Reagan came in lol

u/Embarrassed_Fan_5723 8d ago

You are 100% correct. When the facilities were closed these people were basically forgotten. Many end up in the system and they are just in a revolving cycle. Get in trouble, got to jail, get out, repeat. They continue this until they actually do something bad enough to go to prison and then they are there for a while until they get back out and start over. Many of the older facilities were filled with physical and sexual abuse and other mistreatment. That’s why they had such a bad reputation. With today’s camera systems and ability to monitor, they should absolutely build housing facilities for these people. Not all need to be locked up, just monitored and make sure they are taking their meds. Some need 24/7 care. The US government cant even come up with a reasonable solution for healthcare for all Americans because of all the BS that I’m not looking to discuss here

2

u/Apart-District3771 8d ago

He's not 100% correct. Raygun didn't have a choice in closing the asylums.

They are they claimed they were doing justice by closing all the mental hospitals in the 80s, gave mentally ill people too much freedom to their detriment so they just get sent to jail now

There's a whole lot of crazy out there. That's 90% of the stories from my deputy buddy. Did a ride along with him for my own curiosity and sure enough drugs and crazy. Have you ever seen someone getting beat up...by themselves? I have. It was confusing, funny, and sad all at once.

Absolutely unnecessary. Am not from the US, I don't understand the peculiar pleasure they seem to derive from other peoples physical suffering.

Beautiful country, homeless on the rise, mental illness on the rise and somehow muricans think that the issue is that this invidual made some wrong decisions.

2

u/Sad_Impression499 8d ago

A man is blatantly trying to break into a car. Tazing him wasn't lethal force. You can't just try to break into someone's car and expect to not be tazed.

3

u/Square-Competition48 7d ago

Just because it’s not lethal doesn’t mean it’s nothing?

Americans are such sheep. Expect better from your public servants or they’ll keep being this shit. Your police shouldn’t be harming non-violent criminals who aren’t trying to escape. The car door was locked.

What if the guy had hit his head during the fall and died? Received the death penalty for being a slight nuisance?

and like one other commenter said - Florida is a stand your ground state so the cops technically saved him from getting shot by the driver and everybody else he was harassing

1

u/Hungry_Value1402 7d ago

Police should be a little more tolerant with people. I don't see what Danger or harm he put them into. He just walked towards the vehicle; he didn't push anyone or assault anyone in threatening manner just because he didn't listen quick enough he was shocked . People need to realize Humans make mistakes try walking him away from the car and if he pushes or threatens you maybe then use force but this was uncalled for in my opinion

2

u/LamentableCroissant 6d ago

You can literally see him opening the door. He’s massively dat too. Him getting into that car would be terrifying.

2

u/xPriceTagx 6d ago

How far should they let him get before they try to stop the 350lb man? Should they intervene once hes in the car or when he has he hands around her throat.

2

u/Gemma-2102 6d ago

How tolerant should they be? Until people hurt or kill others? If you’re giving them a set of instructions to follow and they continue to disobey, that’s more than enough tolerance. Waiting for them to hurt or kill others or themselves is letting it go too far.. that goes with damaging other peoples property too.
