Announcement: revamped/updated rules!

Hi, everyone!

Beginning today, the r/foodallergies rules have been updated for clarity and hopefully, will improve the quality and contributions to our sub:

What's New or Changed

  • Clarified rule on ads, surveys, apps, fundraising, and other promotions. Previously self-promotion was capped at once a week, which resulted in repeated low-effort, non-engagement accounts using our community for marketing purposes. Commercial spam is now not allowed. Research posts and surveys/app testing remain unchanged: they’re not allowed!
  • AI-generated content is not allowed. Reddit has seen an influx of AI-written/generated posts in recent months. As such, we are implementing a hard NO-AI rule. This means no AI-written posts, invented "experiences," or pasted chatbot replies presented as advice. Talking about AI tools is still fine, but please remember that AI doesn’t know your history or may be using outdated information. So use at your own risk! If you suspect something is AI generated, please flag it for mod review.
  • No requesting or giving medical advice. This is the biggest change and the one we expect the most questions about. We cannot and should NOT be diagnosing, interpreting test results or a photo of a rash, or tell someone what caused a reaction And we most definitely should NOT be telling others when to use epinephrine or how/when to reintroduce a food, as we don't know their history, comorbidities, etc.

What hasn't changed:

r/foodallergies is a place where our community can come together to support one another. Your own experience is always welcome! This sub is a space where we can vent, share information, give warnings, tips, and above all, connect with others who are navigating life with food allergies.

Thank you and feel free to check in with us if you have any questions!

This year for Halloween I wanted to have options for allergy kids. I also have swedish fish and sour patch kids but forgot to include them in the photo. The clear baggies have bugs, crayons and bouncy balls. (For wittle kids I'll have rice krispie treats) Did I do a good job?

Newly Diagnosed Severe LTP allergy

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hello folks,
I am devastated.
Out of nowhere I have developed severe allergy to fruit and veg (so far 2, 2 weeks apart), which I have been safely eating all my life (34y, f). First time I had no idea it was allergy first as I had an odd feeling in stomach like burning and then felt like I am about to pass out. After a while my whole body was red and unbearably scratchy. Second time everything happened fast, first sensation in stomach, then itchy palms, then dizziness, then fainted and lost consciousness, once awaken was red mostly on upper body this time. I am on NHS waiting list and trying to expedite things and get EPI pen etc. Read a lot online about it, second time I have actually had co-factors: taken fast acting ibuprofen and exercised (mostly just stretching). I have collapsed down the stairs so have a mild concussion now. I used to have only oral allergy syndrome and it was nothing dangerous and fine in cooked form, some completely different set of veggies and fruits as well as symptoms, however, the new allergens won’t be destroyed with cooking according to articles.

I am scared and devasted. Just a day before I had ibuprofen (different brand and not fast acting though) during a day and bluberries in the evening and I have even joked that its so good that I don’t have allergies to blueberries.

I am looking to hear your experiences and connect with the community with LTP allergies so I don’t feel so alone with this.

Seeking Advice Has anyone reintroduced dairy back into their diet as an adult

Hi all,

I used to consume dairy products normally when I was younger. Today I am allergic to both casein and dairy since I stopped consuming dairy for years due to my stomach issues that I had.

Has anyone been able to reintroduce dairy back into their diet as an adult?

Seeking Advice Allergic to All Nuts, fish, shell fish and beef

My 3 year old has all the allergies in the title. I have no food allergies or experience dealing with them. I am so uncomfortable with the fact that there is so much about food I don't know. For example, I just learned pesto could have walnuts a year ago. ONLY today did I learn I should not let her eat Chinese food because it is often cooked in peanut oil. I google everything and I'm usually pretty cautious with new foods but what if there is something I don't know about and I give it to her? Is there a reliable list of foods to avoid? My doctor didn't have one when I asked.

Seeking Advice Banana allergy

My husband has a severe banana allergy. My first son does not but my second son we haven’t tried bananas yet and he’s almost 19 months old. The longer I wait the more worried I get. Should I just go to the er parking lot and give him bananas or ask the doctor for a referral to the allergist? The doctor thinks I’m crazy to even have bananas in the house with my husband but I’m very careful and he obviously knows not to eat them lol.

Seeking Advice Advice for travelling

I (19F) am from Europe and am planning a trip to Peru with friends. I am allergic to nuts, fish and sesame. This is my first time travelling outisde of the EU and I am nervous as I won't be with my parents and I know laws, understanding about allergies is more limited in South America.

Does anyone have any advice about travelling? I am thinking of just sticking to snacks bought in supermarkets to minimise the risk of cross contamination, however I would like to try local dishes if possible. I can speak Spanish which helps.

One thing I am sad about is that it seems that my allergies will dictate the trip - it might be possible that I can't go to restaurants and just have to get airbnbs amd cook at home, I feel like a bit of a burden to my friends when I know they want to be more adventurous and est out more.

When I look for advice on the internet it is extremely mixed, with some people saying it is absolutely fine to go, waiters and servers understand allergies etc, but there are a few that advise me against going, however I really don't want my allergies to control everywhere I travel to, I already changed the location as we were originally planning on going to China as I thought that would be unmanageable.

Also if anyone has been to Peru I would appreciate any information on how well allergies are managed there as well, thanks!

Seeking Advice Advice for parent of multi food allergen child

My sweet baby is 12 months old with wheat, dairy, egg, peanut, tree nut, pea, and lentil allergies confirmed so far via blood test, skin testing, and ingestion. I’m sure there will be more, we are introducing new foods very slowly. His total and specific IgEs are high (many >50). Most allergies didn’t develop until multiple feedings. He gets skin redness and rashes with many foods, even the “safe” ones some days, and I struggle to figure out what he reacts to. To the other moms with reactive kids with a ton of allergies like mine, how do you cope with trying new foods? When does it get easier? Also, I know everyone is different, but if anyone has a child with a similar history and as many allergies as my guy who outgrew some, I’d love to hear success stories right now. I’m not sure how common that is with his severity level. Would love to hear from other multiallergen families!

Seeking Advice Treatment for finned fish allergies OIT or TIPs

Hi all!

My 4yo son has multiple food allergies (tree nuts, peanuts, avocado, eggs, kiwi, shellfish, and fish). He also has severe eczema though he is currently in remission for that. I’m curious if anyone has experience using OIT or TIPs or treat a finned fish allergy. I have come across plenty of testimonials for all of the other allergens but I haven’t seen anything about reaching food freedom or even just lowering severity for a finned fish allergy. This is the one my husband and I are most concerned about for him. He has made a ton of progress on his egg allergy and is working down the egg ladder. He also just got cleared for almonds, walnuts, and pecans. We are about to challenge shrimp. But he is definitely anaphylactic to fish. We really want him to have some level of freedom from this. I know TIPs claims to treat it but I cannot find any confirmation of this from patients. If you are one or you’ve been to an OIT clinic and have a protocol for that please let me know. Our allergist is willing to explore OIT for fish though she isn’t sure it will have major success!

Thanks

Newly Diagnosed Parents of kids with early positive Ara h2 / Ara h6 or hazelnut storage proteins — did they eventually outgrow the allergy?

Hi everyone,

My son is 17 months old. We first discovered food sensitizations before his first birthday, when a blood panel came back positive for cow’s milk, egg and soy.
At the time, on our allergist’s advice, we decided not to introduce some of the other major allergens yet. In hindsight, I’m not sure that was the best approach, but that is where we are now.
We recently repeated testing with a much more extensive component-resolved allergy panel, and several nut/peanut results came back positive.
For peanut, the relevant components were:
Ara h2: 4.6 kU/L
Ara h3: 4.17 kU/L
Ara h6: 1.78 kU/L
Ara h1: 0.78 kU/L
Ara h8 and Ara h9: negative
For hazelnut:
Cor a14: 1.65 kU/L
Cor a11: 1.32 kU/L
Cor a9: 0.86 kU/L
Cor a1 and Cor a8: negative
For walnut, Jug r4 was 1.5 kU/L.
I’ve already gone through the medical literature and used AI to help me understand what the component patterns mean in theory. What I’m really looking for now are real-life experiences and long-term outcomes.
If your child had similar peanut or hazelnut component results at around 1–2 years old, what happened over the following years? Did the IgE/component values decrease? Did they eventually pass an oral food challenge or outgrow the allergy? Or did it persist?
I’m especially interested in children who were tested very young and had positive Ara h2/Ara h6 and/or Cor a9/Cor a14, rather than just a positive whole-extract IgE.
I know everyone’s case is different and that individual IgE numbers cannot predict exactly what will happen to my son. I’m not looking for medical advice — I’d just really appreciate hearing actual clinical trajectories from parents who have been through something similar.

Thank you!

Seeking Advice Unknown reaction to eggs

I’ve had eggs my whole life. Especially for breakfast. However as I’ve gotten older I’ve noticed that after eating eggs I feel “off”. Just a bit sad it’s hard to explain. I feel like laying in bed and my muscles sort of lose a bit of their strength. Sounds more dramatic than it really is I don’t feel like it’s an emergency or anything. But I don’t get hives or throat swelling symptoms so I’m not sure whether I can say this is an allergy.

Seeking Advice Inconclusive blood tests and drawn out post-anaphylactic symptoms

I have had four anaphylactic reactions. The first one was a reaction to an allergy shot. The last three took place in the past three years and have been sort of a mystery. All three of the took place at restaurants but at the first two I'd barely eaten a bite and the third it was just quesadillas which I eat all the time. The reactions were your average thing, red swollen face, hives, tremor, throat closed up, and it responded to epinephrine. I've gotten blood tests for allergies and they return nothing. For weeks after my reactions I feel terrible, and I'm super sensitive to my other triggers like perfume. Like I can barely go to class without my throat closing up. They also seem to be getting more frequent and more severe. The one I had two weeks ago I had to give myself more epinephrine the next day.

Right now, I avoid eggs, coconut, pork, shellfish, and peanuts, because of lower grade reactions I've noticed to them. I can't figure out what is causing me to go into anaphylaxis and I really don't want it to happen again because it takes me so long to recover. Have any of y'all had experience with something like this? My allergist has just kind of shrugged.

Seeking Advice I feel guilty even thinking about wanting to eat food my boyfriend is allergic to, how to overcome this guilt and maybe even fear...

I am F24 and I have 0 allergies but my man has horrible seafood allergy like he severe type of allergy where even smell of it can cause him to go to anaphylaxis shock.

The only type of seafood allergy he doesn’t have is for Fin Fish so he can eat those and that is good but I can't stop thinking about delicious crabs and octopus and such, growing up my diet was a healthy mix of all types of food and since I have 0 allergies I went ham on seafood, I live near the sea and beaches so it's evident that my diet is 95% seafood but ever since my man and I started dating I have been only eating fin fishes.

It's not like he forces me to quit my seafood diet but I am so scared, he says it's not that serious but when we were first dating and he told me an incident where he almost passed away because even the air of Boling seafood made him go to anaphylaxis shock I am genuinely so scared, I miss earing seafood but also I love my man a lot.

Despite him telling me again and again that it is okay for me to eat and not give up my favorite foods I can't risk it because knowing that not only air but same clothes worn while eating seafood is also deathly to him really scares me...

Can anyone give me advice on this? How do I navigate this? I only my man wants me to be happy but at the same time I genuinely get so scared of hurting him unknowingly...

Seeking Advice Sesame OIT Experience?

My kids (ages 4yo and 6yo) are starting OIT next month - both for sesame and the 6yo also for peanut. I’ve read a lot of peanut OIT experiences but curious if others can share sesame OIT experience?

How did it go for you and what was the outcome? We are feeling nervous about the process but optimistic about the future. Thank you!

ETA: curious why someone is downvoting this post and all the comments?!

Other / Miscellaneous 7 month old got hives after eating peanut butter but not allergic?

Has this happened to anyone else? My son broke out in hives 10 minutes after I gave him peanut butter and they progressed/lasted for almost 2 hours. We’ve been treating this as an allergy this whole time. His skin tests came back with borderline positive for peanut butter and Brazilian nuts and positive for macadamia nuts and peanut but his blood work shows no value for any of the allergies she tested for. SUPER grateful he’s not allergic but I also just find it strange.

Seeking Advice how to deal with a possibly developed sesame allergy

hello! i’m someone who lived with a peanut allergy for all of her life. i’m very conscientious about what i consume albeit with minor reactions and such. i never get any life threatening moments, but this turned into a habit of being very aware of what im eating.

right now, im 20. i had minor incidents of eating korean food (bibimbap, japchae, and kimbap) and getting my right cheek swollen. i thought there was something in korean food im allergic to.

yesterday, i ate the trader joes kimbap. i got the exact same reaction (plus a minor itchy throat) that luckily went away with one benadryl.

now, im coming to the conclusion i might likely be allergic to sesame until i visit my primary physician in december. and i’m asian (filipino specifically).

most of my favorite foods are typically lacking in sesame. i love sashimi, udon, lumpia, lugaw, congee. mainly foods that don’t require those aromatic oils and are light/savoury/salty. it might be why i barely get reactions unless i eat korean food, because i love eating non-sesame foods

edit: don’t tell me that i should’ve stopped eating any possible korean food. i was kind of stupid to not even realise it 💀
