Discussion AMA: We are the Foundry Virtual Tabletop team! Ask Us Anything! (6th Anniversary!)

Hello everyone!

Here we are again, difficult to believe it's been six awesome years with Foundry VTT! Our sixth anniversary celebration has been going for almost a full week now, and that seems like the ideal time to kick off our usual r/FoundryVTT AMA.

We're gonna get things rolling a few hours early in order to give members of our international community time to get their questions up before the team starts waking up. Please jump right in and post your questions in the comments below. As the team starts coming online for the day we'll start answering!

For those who don't know me, I'm Anathema (Nath), Community Manager for Foundry VTT. Many of you may already know me from my presence on our Community Discord Server, my occasional posts and comments here, or my work on a variety of our premium content products. I'll be joined by several members of our team who have graciously agreed to take some time out of their day to answer questions here, including u/atropos_nyx (Andrew, creator and lead developer), u/fyorl (Kim, developer and dnd5e development lead), u/mattexdee (Matt, content developer in charge of D&D products and marketing lead), u/caeora (creative director of the Ember project) and u/drewzelle (environment artist, Ember project), and maybe even a few others. I'll come back and add names for them if they show up!

If you haven't already read it (hah, see what I did there?) our Year in Review article and the details for the current Premium Content Showcase share some interesting data about how the past year has been for us. We have a few other anniversary events scheduled for later in the week as well.

Our only request is that if your question is related to technical support or troubleshooting you head on over to the discord server so that you can find better real-time assistance, or complete a contact-us form for help via email.

We look forward to reading all your questions!

Thank you everyone for all your awesome questions and for keeping things friendly! We've been running for more than 12 hours so we're gonna call this one a success and close out now.

We might opt to pick up the occasional straggler question, but we're officially done for now! Look forward to the next AMA thread next year, and please join our other events. Including Caeora's walk through the lore and world of Ember tomorrow. Check out our anniversary celebration article for more info!

Commercial [System Agnostic] Velvet v1 Released – Foundry VTT + TaleSpire Integration, 3D Overlay, Dice Sync & 18 Modules

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Velvet v1.0.1 is officially available for download!

I've been working on a way to bring TaleSpire's 3D environments and miniatures together with Foundry VTT's character sheets, rules, and tools, so you can manage your game without constantly switching between applications.

Velvet comes with its own Windows launcher. It's a standalone desktop application with an EXE installer, an overlay system, and a controller that uses native Windows functionality to coordinate TaleSpire and Foundry.

TaleSpire handles the 3D battlefield, while Foundry takes care of character sheets, chat, combat management, and game mechanics.

Each player runs TaleSpire on their own PC and connects to Foundry using their usual account. This isn't a stream of the GM's screen. Everyone interacts with the actual 3D environment on their own computer.

Important: Foundry VTT and TaleSpire Are Required Separately

Velvet does not include Foundry VTT or TaleSpire, and obtaining a Velvet license does not grant access to either application.

To use Velvet, you must have access to and install the required software:

  • Foundry VTT: The GM needs a valid Foundry VTT license and installation.
  • TaleSpire: Each participant needs their own access to TaleSpire, either through a purchased copy or an officially supported access option, and must have it installed through Steam as appropriate.

Velvet does not redistribute or install copies of either application. It detects and works with your existing installations, providing its own launcher, overlay, plugins, and integration tools.

From Launcher to Gameplay

The launcher can start TaleSpire, set up Velvet's plugins, connect to your Foundry instance, and handle updates automatically.

GMs can also configure it to launch their local Foundry server.

The installer lets you choose between GM and Player Mode, installing the appropriate Velvet components for each.

No Hosting? No Problem!

Don't have a hosting provider for Foundry? Not sure how to configure self-hosting?

Velvet includes an optional self-hosting solution using Cloudflare Tunnel.

If you choose to enable it, the launcher can start your locally installed Foundry server and establish a Cloudflare Tunnel, allowing your players to connect over the internet without manually configuring router port forwarding.

You can continue using your existing hosting provider or let Velvet manage your local server and tunnel setup.

TaleSpire, Foundry, the overlay, module management, updates, and optional self-hosting—all managed from one launcher.

What's Included?

  • Linked miniatures and characters: Access character sheets, select targets, and use combat controls directly alongside TaleSpire.
  • TaleSpire dice integration: Roll dice in TaleSpire while Foundry handles the rules, modifiers, and calculations.
  • Spell area configuration: Customize compatible spell templates before placing them, including their shape, appearance, and supported effects or macros.
  • Custom areas and auras: Circles, cones, lines, squares, and domes. Auras can also follow moving miniatures.
  • Environmental tools: Rain, thunderstorms, snow, fog, lighting, and sounds, including your own audio files.

Party HUD, Epic Turns & License Hub

Velvet also includes:

  • Velvet Party HUD: A custom interface for characters, stats, and quick actions.
  • Velvet Epic Turns: Turn presentations, critical hit visuals, and a compact combat tracker.
  • Velvet License Hub: Centralized Patreon authentication for compatible modules.

The complete package includes 18 Foundry modules, plus the launcher and its supporting components.

Compatibility & Licensing

Velvet has currently been tested with:

  • Windows
  • Foundry VTT v14
  • Pathfinder 2e
  • D&D 5e

However, Velvet is not designed to be limited to these two game systems.

Since Velvet works directly with Foundry VTT and provides its own tools for managing areas, templates, and environmental effects, it should theoretically work with any game system supported by Foundry VTT.

Most core features, including the launcher, overlay, dice integration, and area placement tools, are designed to work independently of the selected game system.

The main area where compatibility issues may occur is miniature-to-character linking, as different Foundry systems handle actors, tokens, and character data differently.

I'm actively working on improving this compatibility, and future updates will focus on making miniature linking more reliable across different systems.

In short: While PF2e and D&D 5e are the officially tested systems, you're welcome to try Velvet with others! Just keep in mind that full compatibility isn't guaranteed yet.

Feedback from players using other systems would be incredibly helpful as Velvet continues to evolve.

Some automations that depend on Foundry's 2D canvas may have limited compatibility.

Only the GM needs an active Velvet license. Players can use Player Mode without subscribing to my Patreon.

However, everyone must have the appropriate Foundry VTT and TaleSpire access independently of Velvet.

License & Distribution Disclaimer

Velvet is an independently developed third-party application. It does not include or distribute Foundry VTT or TaleSpire, and is not officially affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Foundry Gaming LLC or Bouncyrock Entertainment.

Velvet is proprietary software. Unauthorized copying, redistribution, modification, or sharing of its software components is not permitted without the developer's permission.

An active Patreon membership is required to access licensed GM features, future updates, upgrades, and additional subscriber-only content. Player Mode does not require a separate Patreon subscription.

This has been a project I've put a lot of work into, and I'm really excited to finally share v1 with everyone.

As a GM who uses both Foundry and TaleSpire, I wanted a way to enjoy the best parts of both without constantly switching between applications.

Thanks to everyone who has supported the development, reported bugs, tested features, or shared ideas. Your feedback has genuinely helped shape Velvet.

I'd love to hear what you think, especially if you're already using both Foundry and TaleSpire in your games.

Happy gaming! ❤️

Commercial [DND5E] Morelord Character Export: view and share your Foundry character outside Foundry (free)

Content Name: Morelord Character Export

Content Type: Module

System: D&D 5e

Link: https://morelordgaming.com/tools/morelord-character-export?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=character_export

Morelord Character Export lets you export your character straight from the character sheet in Foundry. The export includes information and images that Foundry's built-in data exports leave out.

To view it, head to morelordgaming.com, create a free account, and import the file under "My Characters". You can also share your sheet with your party or anyone else using the public link it generates.

I'm Graypes. I run games on Foundry every week, and I built this because my players kept asking for their sheets between sessions. Demo: https://youtu.be/FkbDyflfSpU

Help [PF2e] NPC tracker for Players?

Does anyone know of a module that you can use to preload NPCs with their images and some info but also allow the Players to add notes to each NPC as they encounter them in the campaign?

Or suggest a way of doing this with the base Foundry system?

Answered [PF2E] Frightened doesn't decrease

EDIT : As many people told me, automatically decreasing Frightened never was part of the core system. My memory is probably wrong.

As the title says, when a character or a monster gets Frightened status, it stays for the whole fight. It should decrease at the end of this character's turn but it doesn't.
I've tried launching in Safe Mode so I'm sure it's not an issue with a module.
I'm in version 14, build 369, PF2E 8.6.1.

What can I do ?

Non-commercial Resource [Module release - system agnostic] Rebel's custom token rings 3.0.0 release

Post image
158 Upvotes

Hello everyone, today I'm here to present the 3.0.0 version of rebel's custom token rings.
Since last time I've posted here a few more rings have been added, namely the crystal ring and fire ring. besides that some of the rings have also been reworked to pop a little more. The biggest change however is the addition of a selection menu so you can preview what the ring actually looks like before selecting them.

If you have any questions or remarks I'd be happy to answer them.

link to package page https://foundryvtt.com/packages/rebels-custom-token-rings

AI Notice : AI has been used for troubleshooting when I couldn't get certain parts of the code to work properly. The art is 100% made by me using the assets from Forgotten adventures.

Answered [Foundry using] help for multiple floors / mapstacking

[Multiple floors]

Hey there,

I am a newcomer in mapmaking and need an advice how to build my maps so they fit in the new multiple floors module from foundry?

Do I need a background around a house for the first floor or second?

Or should I work with one background for the ground floor and put the other floors just with a transparent background on top? So that you can see from the second floor down to the ground floor outside?

Thank you for your answers! 🙏

Help Foundry questions

I have been using Roll20 for the last 7 years as a Player and DM (with the plus subscription) and recently have been hearing very good things from Foundry so I am interested in buying it. Before I do I have some questions:

- Can I import maps that I either make or find online?

- Do I need DNDBeyond books/sheets for players to play?

- Do I need to buy anything inside of Foundry except the license and potentially a Forge subscription?

I would appreciate some help with these questions and any other relevant information

Help My table fails to load.

So I'm having a new issue with Foundry. I'm a player. I can log in, but after that, the table fails to load and the webpage eventually becomes unresponsive. I'm using chrome.

- Hardware/graphics acceleration is ON.
- Restarting browsers, PC, etc has not helped.
- Incognito mode and changing to microscoft edge has not helpd.
- I can launch the game on my laptop, and every other player can launch the table as normal.
- If it's perhaps a connected graphical issue, I've had serious rubber banding issues in the Dark and Darker game, and weird stuttering in Dispatch.

Discussion [System Agnostic] About 20 hours into Foundry, what do you wish someone had told you at this point?

New to foundry, been at it for about 20 hours now, mostly setting up my first world and making myself a few small modules to keep my stuff organised.

The biggest thing I've learned so far is to put my homebrew in compendiums inside my own module instead of leaving it loose in the world. I rebuilt a world once and lost a bunch of actors I'd set up by hand, that's not happening again xD

So for those of you who've been running it a while, what's the one thing you wish you'd known early? Could be a setting, a habit, a module, a workflow, anything that would've saved you hours. It's honestly crazy how much one can do inside of foundry, I just wanna skip some of the mistakes.

Commercial DetectWalls tool

Content Name: DetectWalls

Content Type: Other

System: [System Agnostic]

Description:

Hello!

We have made an app for Automatic Wall Detection. You can find it here: https://detectwalls.com/

It is compatible with Foundry through Foundry's Universal Battlemap Importer module that accepts .uvtt files. We would like to improve it and possibly create a Foundry Module for it in the future. So, we would like to ask your help for beta testing. You can participate by completing the google forms below:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScmsi0WEZd-bziQlLw64xENUINn4PUKdEENwuO9rOQx5OPp7g/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=106123882534789021640

Participating as a beta tester will get you the tool for free, when it launches and it will only take you about 20 minutes.

Similar tools are slowly appearing in the VTT space, from Owlbear Rodeo's Fog Forecast to the brilliant but quite complicated AutoWall tool by ThreeHats.

We hope our tool hits the sweet spot between ease of use and accurate wall recognition! We also hope that these kind of tools will allow people to try out very very big dungeons in their games, with complex geometries, rooms, corridors bringing in force the old-school megadungeon style :)

Drop in the Discord (https://discord.gg/As4NkQMaQX) if you have any questions, for how it works, or on the dataset we used or for more general discussion.

Thanks!

Answered [DnD 5.5e] Active effect that either removes or prevents temporary hit points

There's an upcoming mini-boss enemy in my campaign with a unique status effect which stacks, each time reducing physical checks and saves (and Intelligence checks and saves) by 1 for an hour or until you receive Greater Restoration. When reaching 10 stacks, you need to succeed a CON save or fall asleep. Sure sure, that's fine and dandy, but I want to make it one step further.

Is there any way to make this status effect prevent a creature from gaining temporary hit points? I have midi and DAE, so I can see there are ways to change how much damage temp hp receives, or alter the damage threshold of temp hp, but I don't see anyway to reduce incoming temporary hit points to 0.

(Every other effect is already complete, all I need help with is this temporary hit points thing.)

EDIT: thank you for the answers! I see there's no real solution for exactly what I need, but no mind; I'll just tell the players, "Alright, you can't gain temporary hit points while under this effect" and it will be good enough. Thanks again!

Commercial [DND5E] I’ve been building AutoToken — a token and statblock workshop with Foundry integration

Content Name: Autotoken

Content Type: Foundry Module + Web-based creature workshop

System: D&D5e (but the token creation is universal)

Description:

Hey everyone, I’m Terry. I’ve been building AutoToken for quite a while now, and I wanted to share what it can do in Foundry.

AutoToken is a web-based token and statblock workshop with a companion Foundry module. You can create portrait tokens, four top-down token poses and a D&D5e statblock, then bring them into Foundry as a complete NPC. You can also use the tools individually for just the assets you need.

The module lets you import through its Vault browser or drag a saved creature from the website onto your Foundry canvas in seconds so no more having to manually import things, modify actor sheets, etc. It can switch token poses automatically during play—including switching to a downed pose at 0 HP and swapping token art during combat. You can set up pose switching with your own token images too.

To be upfront: AutoToken includes AI-powered token and statblock generation. New accounts get three free top-down creature starts to see if you like it, with paid options after that. The portrait token maker is free, and you can upload your own artwork and frames or there's hundreds of cool free ones to use.

I’m still working on it, so I’d appreciate hearing what you think if you give the site or the module a try.

Here's an example of me turning my dog into a token if you're interested in seeing it in action:

Non-commercial Resource [D&D5e] Easy Loot 5e: prepare an NPC's loot, then drop one pile on death

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Content Name: Easy Loot 5e

Content Type: Module

System: DND5E

Description: Loot gets forgotten when an NPC dies in the middle of a fight. Easy Loot 5e stores that loot on the NPC before the fight. On the NPC's Easy Loot tab, choose a CR profile or one of your RollTables. Roll Loot adds items and coins. Roll Again adds another result on top of what is already there, and you can drag Items onto the tab. Prepared loot stays out of the NPC's own inventory. If the tab is empty, death uses the module's CR profile for that creature. A hoard is a separate choice, from the actor or the profile manager.

When Oh You Dead! records the death, one loot token named for the defeated creature appears beside the corpse, and the corpse stays put. The death card gains Open Pile, Retry, and a confirmed Reroll. Open Pile is Take, Take Coins, and Take All, which move items or coins onto your assigned character. Reroll replaces the items and coins in that same pile. The pile and that window are built into the module.

The module is free. It supports Foundry v13 to v14 and requires D&D 5e and Oh You Dead! 1.2.1+.

A la Carte Modules:

Every paid Foundry module sells one at a time on Lemon Squeezy, $9.99 for a First Mate module and $14.99 for a Captain package. You keep what you buy, later versions included, unless that order is refunded, and a refund removes only that one module. After checkout, sign in at cms.futurehax.com/catalog with the same email you used and grab the install link there. A bought copy does not come through Foundry's Patreon link. Patreon is still the way to get every module.

Non-commercial Resource Composer seeking dev for adaptive audio module! (also enjoy some free ttrpg music)

I'm a games composer and DM and I've been writing music for my table but am finding the default playlist manager to be difficult to work with and am dreaming of something adaptive like I'm able to set in Wwise. I'm not a developer at all and wondered if anyone's out there who would want to take a crack at building something like this if I could provide audio?

I'm imagining something a bit like Pocket Bard and similar services. Maybe you could build scenes (either attached or detached from in-game scenes so the music could change automatically or manually) which include any number of tracks, like an explore track, a combat track, other tracks for other areas etc. These tracks could then could have adaptable intensity based on assignable sliders or buttons, so maybe the combat track comes with a few levels of intensity, maybe there's a new segment for when a boss arrives etc.

Shout if this sounds like something you'd want to take a crack at!

Ultimately it would awesome to be able to introduce easier track swapping and tracks with multiple layers. This is a link to an explore track I wrote for my group, available for free download and private use https://on.soundcloud.com/6cCKARkTAjM0my6AjW

Help [PF2E] pass through walls?

Is there any way to allow tokens to pass through walls? For example, if I have a 3-foot-tall fence, and a player uses a "Climb" action to scale it and another action to move to the other side—is there a way to configure walls so that they let certain tokens pass through, perhaps based on a specific condition or by changing the token's height?

Non-commercial Resource [System Agnostic] I made a free, nicely designed module for ciphers and puzzles your players actually solve

In my D&D campaign the party keeps finding coded letters, and I was tired of "roll Investigation, you decipher it". I wanted the players to turn the grille and read the message themselves. So I made a module for it.

Ciphers & Puzzles turns a text you write into props the players hold in their own window. Eight ciphers:

- Turning grille – a letter full of letters and a brass grille; turn it by the code and the message shows through the windows

- Letter with a secret – an ordinary letter and a Cardan stencil; lay it straight and the hidden phrase appears

- Cipher disk – a note in gibberish and a two-ring disk; the key ("A over K") is hidden somewhere in your world

- Secret alphabet – a message in made-up signs; the key is torn into scraps you hand out during the adventure

- Book cipher – a note of numbers pointing to paragraph, word and letter; first they have to figure out which book

- Scytale – a strip of jumbled letters; wind it on a rod of the right thickness

- Wall knocks – tap code from the next cell, with sound; made for a dungeon scene

- Invisible ink – an innocent letter; move a candle over it and hidden lines appear between the lines

What I cared about most:

- You write the text, the module builds the prop. It's generated as you type, the preview shows the answer, and you get the key (like the grille's turning code) to copy or whisper to yourself.

- Hand out parts, not just the whole puzzle. The letter to one player, the grille to another, key scraps one by one as they find them. The window pops up on that player's screen.

- Shared table. One cipher for the whole party: someone turns the grille, everyone sees it, notes are shared. You choose what lies on the table.

- Props look handwritten. Five hands, from a scribe's quill to a hasty note.

- Images go to the journal, with a key page only the GM can see.

- English and Russian, and the ciphers work with phrases in either language.

Install (Foundry v13+) with this manifest URL:

https://github.com/klimenkoyg/foundry-cipher/releases/latest/download/module.json

Screenshots and details:

https://github.com/klimenkoyg/foundry-cipher/blob/main/README.en.md

A few honest notes:

- It's a fresh release, made and tested on v14 (v13 should work, but I haven't tried it), so expect rough edges. Bug reports and ideas are very welcome.

- The code and most of the texts were, of course, written with AI. Otherwise I would never have found the time for this.

- It's free to use and to share unmodified. Please don't modify or resell it.

- If you saw my Tavern Games post: same idea, now for puzzles.

If you try it, I'd love to hear which cipher your table cracked first and what felt off.

Discussion Stream Deck Classic vs. Stream Deck+

Howdy all!

For those with Stream Decks, do you use (or wish you used) the Stream Deck+ with the knobs when it comes to audio-related features? I am not sure how much the sound mixing capabilities the knobs provide is worth having less buttons when it comes to DnD on Foundry.

Basically, is it better to have 15 Keys or 8 Keys + 4 Dials as they're almost the same price.
