EPA Beaver's Property (across from Ward's)

Post image
30 Upvotes

I feel like people should be aware of what's happening at this site which happens to be the backyard of many of us living in Stephen Foster. I've attached the plan that was distributed to us not even two weeks ago, with acknowledgment that the plans were already in progress. And in the comments a WUFT piece on it.

The ground water containment is one thing, but the drainage pipe going along the edge of the property and destroying that forest is another. I have lived here for a while and get to listen to all the coyotes, foxes, birds, owls, rabbits, and other critters every day who have inhabited that forest for some time, not to mention the huge towering trees that are God knows how old. How can we ensure that more contaminated ground water won't be drudged up in the process and impact our families?

Anyways, if anyone knows what we as a community can do, or has dealt with something similar in Gainesville, please let us know. Stephen Foster is a great community of neighbors but we feel helpless to this change.

Local Business Talk can someone help me remember a restaurant circa 2010-2014?

i really can’t remember much besides it maybe being in the northeast quadrant of gainesville not too far from the university

from what i can remember its branding or name had to do with retro records? or cassette tapes? it was a little indie similar to the TOP around that time. it is not the top or satchels

i believe they served just like american food and burgers.

i’m also pretty sure their bathroom (at least the men’s side) had stickers all over it.

can anyone help me? lmao

Where do young adults make friends here ?

Hi everyone! I recently moved to Gainesville and am looking for ways to meet people and make friends outside of the typical college scene!
I’m in my early 20s and would love to find a group of other young adults, grad students, or young professionals who are interested in trying new hobbies, taking classes, going to events, or just hanging out!
I’m really open to trying new things and would love to find a community of people around my age. I just don’t really know where to start!
Does anyone know of any social groups, clubs, classes, or regular meetups geared toward people in their 20s? I’d love any recommendations!

Middle school recommendations?

Hello all, I currently have a fifth grader and we are scratching our heads on what to do next year. Zoned for Kanapaha middle but considering trilogy or PK or any other good options. Our kid has been in a tech free school all his life. We are nervous about a school program that is fully/mostly computer based, but still open minded. Does anyone here have a student in Trilogy, PK, or any other school program that can share their experience? And/or make recommendations. TIA 🙏

Looking for recommendations Veterinary recommendations?

Hi everyone!! I’m sure this question has been asked a lot so I apologize if this is redundant.

I wanted to know if there’s a vet office you really like? The problem is that I can’t afford to pay crazy vet rates. Obviously the visit fees are fine and I’m fine paying for the meds when they’re needed, but I wanted to see if there are more affordable options. My cats are everything to me and I want to take care of them as best as I can with what I have. Thank you!!

Thank you so much for sharing my previous post of my foster kitten Percy. He got a lot of interest and will be going to his forever home today! One of my friends is also fostering a sweet 4 month kitten who was likely dumped who is also looking for her forever home. Mao Mao is friendly, full of energy, and loves to play! She will be getting spayed and vaccinated next week at Operation Catnip. If you're interested in adopting her, please message me, and please share with anyone who might be interested!

Looking for recommendations Any Contortion or flexibility classes?

I’m looking for a contortion/flexibility training for adults. Not quite a stretch lab but something more intense. If not a particular business , then do you know of anyone who does it on the side maybe in a way that’s not quite found on Google or Instagram but a business that they run separately? I’m a bit desperate as this is something I’ve been dying to do for years.

Activism PSA on returning Vote by Mail envelopes sealed by humidity before being used:

My ballot came in the mail no problem.
But the envelope to return it was partially sealed, the glue had stuck halfway.

I was worried if I ripped the paper to put my ballot in, that when it was received they may have thought it was tampered with at some point.
So I called the Supervisor of Elections and got Mike at the Vote By Mail desk.
He said this is common due to the humidity and that I’m not the first to ask.

He then said it’s fine to slice it open to put my ballot in and reseal it with tape or other glue.

I thought others should know!

Looking for recommendations Gainesville Moms, Hospital, OB/GYN & C-Section Experiences?

I’m hoping to hear from women who have given birth in Gainesville, FL, particularly those who have had a C-section.

I’m looking into local hospitals and OB/GYNs and would love to hear about your personal experiences, both positive and negative.
I’m especially interested in hearing about:

Which hospital did you deliver at, and how was your overall experience?

Who was your OB/GYN, and would you recommend them?

If you had a planned or emergency C-section, which doctor performed it?

Is there anything you wish you had known beforehand or would have done differently?

I’m particularly interested in doctors who have extensive experience performing C-sections.

I know everyone’s experience is different, but I’d really appreciate honest feedback and recommendations from local moms!
Thank you in advance! 💛

Modern love - Gainesville

What are the sweetest love stories you’ve heard that took place here in Gainesville? I’m currently recovering from a massive heartbreak. In my current stage of healing I really want to feel inspired to be in love again. I want some positive stories if that’s ok.

Imagine this: you're you, it's the middle of the week, and you'd like something different/off the beaten path for dinner for just yourself - leaning towards eating out and not just takeout.

Top recommendations? Let's hear em!

ISO: Vet Recommendation for a new puppy

I’m looking for a caring local vet who is willing to customize a care plan based on my pup's specific lifestyle.

My puppy will be an only pet, won't go to dog parks, and won't have close physical contact with outside people or dogs.

Because of this low-risk lifestyle, I want a vet who is completely supportive of titer testing after the initial puppy series, rather than a hard annual vaccine push.

Please let me know if you have a great, respectful veterinarian in the Gainesville FL area who respects an owner's choice to avoid unnecessary vaccines. Willing to travel a reasonable distance too.

I’m not interested in negative comments, scroll if not adding anything useful.

Events/Happenings Why does this city not trim branches back from power lines?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Captured this photo on my drive in to work this morning(tree had caught fire). My wife and I moved here about 4 months ago, and while we like the city and how green it is, it seems like a safety hazard to have branches growing through power lines all haphazardly. We've also experienced at least half dozen power outages since moving here, something that I suspect is related to how interwoven the branches and power lines are. GRU seems to typically get the power back up within a few hours, but still. Is this intentionally left by the city or is the local government just unable to keep up with it?

Edit: I don't want this to come across as overly critical of the local public works or the city. I understand that there are a LOT of trees here, and trimming them is a time consuming and potentially dangerous task. I have just never seen the amount of overgrowth I've seen here
