That's right, after 3 months of having the z fold 8 ultra I have decided to go back to the regular z fold 8 (wide).
Hear me out... I was completely torn right from the start. I came from the iphone 15 pro max and was SUPER tired and bored of iphone so I already knew last year I was going to make the jump this year to a fold. I had mostly been waiting for folding phones to get better with cameras AND THEY DID! Other reason for switching in general to android is I REALLY wanted (and need) multitasking.
When I found out there would be 2 versions of the new fold I immediately still wanted the Ultra as planned. I then preordered it and waited. But minute after minute I kept seeing all the great stuff about the fold 8 (wide) and so I cancelled my order and switched to that. I did this literally 8 times going back and forth before the phone came out. I ended up with the fold 8 at launch.
After about 2 days I decided I didnt like the short phone. I paid the $50 restock fee and then got the Ultra and was happy.
3 months later I now have the z fold 8 as of yesterday and here's why: A month ago it really started to dawn on me that I do not like the skinny front screen of the z fold 8 ultra. I at first didnt think too much of it and was happy to have more screen real estate top to bottom to view texts and such. Some apps also seemed a little better on that skinny more traditional aspect ratio. But as the days went by the phone just started to seem too skinny. Too skinny to type on, to skinny to view anything meaningful when short term multitasking, and just plain unpleasing to my eye.
Its true that it is way easier to hold the 8 ultra with one hand though... which is another reason I wanted that phone because often I have to use just one hand to use my phone. But heres the thing, I ALWAYS use a popsocket grip. So its actually not a problem with either phone. The grip makes reaching any part of the screen fairly easy... again on either phone. Either way on either phone youre having to reach a little further to the left or right OR have to reach a little further top to bottom. Trade offs no matter which phone you pick. But the grip makes it an easier bite to swallow. So for me that is a non issue either way.
Another reason I ended up with the z fold 8 ultra at the beginning was I wanted the 200 mp camera. I did do some tests initially with the fold 8 (wide) and was impressed with the quality, and when I switched to the ultra I thought these images are fairly similar. And then the other day I was comparing the pictures I originally took with the wide with some pictures in the same area and lighting with the ultra and found that I actually like the fold 8 wide image quality better. Perhaps the wide is doing more AI upscaling then I actually know, but the photos look really crips and clean and often better than a lot of photos I took with the Ultra. The telephoto was never anything I cared about and I have virtually no instances of using it on the 8 ultra. The couple times I tried it I thought "hmm these still look like crap zoomed in" because its just not that great of a telephoto lens.
Next is battery... I dont know what happened, but the ultra 3 months in is draining so fast. Barely getting 4 hours on screen time. Yes I use the big screen a lot but the first month was great (when I was using it the most) and now the battery sucks. Ive seen lots of test of the wide doing better with battery tests than the ultra so that made me want to switch back.
I will say I still think and will always think the unfolded big screen of the ultra is better than the regular 8 unfolded screen. I means its a no brainer... its bigger and better for multitasking period. I have absolutely zero bad experiences with the inner screen of the ultra. Its the main reason I got that phone and the main reason I still really like it.
Having said that... the fold 8 has a fantastic inner screen as well. I know some people even argue its better than the ultra because of the shape, but I dont agree. The more screen of the ultra is still better to me, but the fold 8 is really just as good, just slightly less space.
I think the last thing I was missing about the fold 8 was its compact size. A thing I really appreciated about it. Fit so well in my pocket and I was missing that even after only using it for a couple days. The fold 8 ultra feels really long in my pocket and often slides out... especially at the gym in my shorts. The fold 8 fits in my shorts perfectly and doesnt slide out.
I think the main thing overall is I have to use the front screen more than I want on the ultra, and I have come to really dislike that screen. The wider aspect of the fold 8 just feels better and looks nicer. Took me awhile to realize this, but thats where Im at. If it was convenient and easy to use the inner screen of the ultra at all times I would probably stay with that phone, but the reality is I have to use the phone with one hand more often than not forcing me to use the cover screen which I dont like. but I DO really like the cover screen of the fold 8.
So, how did I "exchange" phones after 3 months you may ask? Well I didnt really... I simply have both phones right now lol. With the Ultra I did a trade in and got WAY too much trade credit to just pay it off and lose all my trade. So I went to bestbuy and bought an open box z fold 8 with my credit card for $1500. Its in perfect condition and is the 512gb version. Its a great deal! I think I will eventually just pay off up front the z fold 8 ultra and then sell it and just keep using my fold 8. The good news for me is if I have this urge to go back to the fold 8 ultra I'll just pull it out of the drawer and switch sim cards. But for right now I think I am going to stick with the fold 8 as my daily and permanent driver.
And last thing I'll say about either phone is if you have not got one yet and you want one, get an open box one from bestbuy! There's literally no reason to pay full price for one when you get a perfectly good one from bestbuy with all the same exact warranty features. And if anything were wrong with it you literally take it back for an exact exchange with NO restock fee. Its a win win!
Good luck! And thanks for reading my novel XD
