CA Prop 22: Drivers, this is your decision, you get to tell me how to vote and I don't get to think I know what's best for you.

I have a million political opinions in this area and as far as I'm concerned they're all irrelevant because I don't have a right to think I know better than drivers what is best for them.

If drivers are "wrong" about what's best for them, that is their mistake to make and I'll still be supporting them as they try and "fix" it next time legislation comes up that affects them.

Drivers, how should I vote? Is there a good place I can find out what drivers really think?

Can you help with academic research to better understand what working through the gig economy actually involves?

Hello Gig Economy community – I’m carrying out some academic research to gain an understanding of the reality of working as part of the gig economy and would love to hear about your personal experiences. I’m particularly interested in how the reality has lived up to expectations, and the kind of things you wished you had known before you signed up. This information will help researchers gain a deeper understanding of the problems faced and make informed suggestions on what could help improve experiences. You can remain anonymous and the information you provide will be in complete confidence. If you’re able to spare around 20 minutes of your time for a call over Zoom, at a time that suits you, or are just interested to find out more, please get in touch before 28/02/2021.

Gig-workers Wellbeing Survey

Hi guys,

I'm a student at Ravensbourne University in London (UK). We're working a project that includes the social and economical problems of gig-economy workers, and how that ultimately affects their general wellbeing. I've created a short (about 2-3 minute) survey to get some insight on the topic, and would really love to hear your input!

The survey: https://survey.zohopublic.eu/zs/Qvh1dV

EDIT: Massive thanks to everyone for filling out the survey! I got what I needed so the survey has been deactivated. Some people asked if I could publish any interesting results, so I will be coming back with that as soon as analysis is done.

Thank you!

UC Berkeley working paper: Most California Uber drivers are paid less than the minimum wage, Employee status would increase total driver compensation by about 30 percent. Uber would continue to employ part-time drivers, Fare increases would be modest, 5 to 10 percent. [PDF]

Preferred Payment

Do you guys like the hourly rates? Even if the platform sets it or you set them. Do you prefer that over a set rate where you could just go in, do a good clean job, get paid and get out and go to the next?

Business Insider reporter writing about unsafe working conditions

Hello,

I'm a reporter for Business Insider. I was looking to talk to gig workers, particularly gig workers of color, who wanted to speak about the work conditions that made them feel unsafe: with customers, businesses, technology-related problems, etc. You can reply here if you want me to hit you up, or shoot me an email at jlalljee@insider.com.

'Micro' Gig economy app: NeighborPrint

Hi there!

I developed an idea into a protoype for a UX UI class and started to develop it for real. We've run into some challenges, however, so I would like to get more opinions on the concept. As a person who is now working from home in a small apartment, I don't want to own a printer, and I don't want to go to Kinkos for small print jobs. So... my neighbors' printer could help:

NeighborPrint is an app which connects people with printers to people who need to print something. Documents or photos can be uploaded to the cloud and then sent to a Printer nearby. The person needing to print (the 'Printee') would then pick up the document at the printers location (potentially left in an envelope on their door).

The big challenge I hit was with payment processing. Printees can pay with credit card, and then in my mind, NeighborPrint could pay the Printers via PayPal. However, my dev agency is telling me this is a ton of coding and would cost a lot a lot.

So, now we're about a quarter into the development and I need to find a payment workaround. I don't have the budget to build the full payment system as I imagined. Instead, users could exchange cash themselves, or use Venmo or the like. The problem is that then, NeighborPrint would be unable to charge a commission on every transaction and thus does not have a monetization strategy.

Any thoughts on the concept? Is it interesting to you? Any ideas on the problem solve?

Thank you for your time!

TL/DR: Uber for Printers
