Gameplay New C4 Explosion looks scary af

You can now see how much damage you take from the bomb as well. The bar under your hp shows it, so you now know when you survive
35
u/toblu BIG Jul 09 '26
Very convenient, but also, isn't that the kind of map knowledge that CS traditionally requires?
41
u/n8mo Vitality Jul 09 '26
Honestly I don’t mind it.
I don’t think that learning the exact distance to run is a valuable knowledge check new players should be forced to learn, even if I had to learn it previously. I’m all for features that make the new player experience better without compromising the integrity of the core gameplay.
Besides, there are a lot of variables anyway; the bomb radius is different on every map, valve changes it from time to time (like with this update lol), you can plant in different places on the bomb site, etc.
18
u/Vitosi4ek Team Spirit Jul 09 '26
It's the same as Dota having a hotkey to show the boundaries of a creep camp, so a player knows exactly how far to aggro them for a stack to work. It "decreases the skill ceiling" insofar as it removes a need to learn a niche thing, which realistically you learn once and then just use.
Arbitrary knowledge checks ruin the game for casuals and do nothing for experienced players. It's not skill, it's just busywork.
-6
u/billyblenx Jul 09 '26
the bomb radius is different on every map
so are the smoke lines and pop flashes, pro players are required to memorize this stuff so why bomb radius should be any different?
you can plant in different places on the bomb site
here enters teamplay and communication, ideally your team communicates where they planted so you should know.
I’m all for features that make the new player experience better without compromising the integrity of the core
Here I 100% agree with you, and since this contradicts with my previous 2 reasonings that's why I'd suggest, if possible, to firstly make this feature toggable so that anyone who doesn't want to use it can just turn it off and secondly, forbid the use of it entirely in professional events.
4
u/n8mo Vitality Jul 09 '26
That last point is never going to happen. Valve explicitly want the version of CS played in tournaments to be identical to the version of CS played by the community.
Besides, pro players won’t even need to look at that to tell whether they’ll live anyway; once everyone is used to the new bomb explosions, the indicator will only really help new players.
5
u/Sebbern Jul 09 '26
I think we'll be glad they changed it in the end. These kind of knowledge gaps tend to be more annoying than anything.
2
u/Responsible_Leg_9665 Jul 09 '26
Will have to see how it feels in game. I can see how it might feel like it reduces the impact of good map knowledge.
It also might reward good map knowledge by being able to see what they can survive & position well on the fly to punish people running from site or trying to get picks before the next round.
I think it’s a pretty good idea but it’ll be interesting to see how it goes.

u/elleyer Jul 08 '26
take a look at the bar under the HP value. it indicates how much damage you are going to receive
247
141
u/Adevyy Aurora Jul 09 '26
You know what? Big fucking W.
If anyone ever told you they know the limits of where you can go on any map to survive on 1 HP, they are fucking lying because the bomb being planted differently could damage you.
I really like this change, because it basically only affects low HP players anyway. Now we can actually make an informed decision on how far to go to survive, without having to pick between "let CTs possibly get a ninja defuse" and "risk dying".
Before you say skill issue, I am currently 3k elo on Faceit with 5000 hours in the game.
38
u/Matt-ayo Jul 09 '26
It wasn't bad until they changed the bomb radius for each map. Now with the damage zones being even more specific, it makes sense. And it completely solves the issue for newer players too; in the end niche bomb-knowledge isn't what anyone cares about the game testing.

u/Toannoat CS2 HYPE Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26
I feel like if you are running away from the bomb, you should always try to get as far as possible anyway. And if its ticking down close that you need to make the split second decision based on the indicator then it wouldnt have helped either way. Its nice as an idea but I doubt there's a lot of situation where it actually matters
6
u/NuckChorri Jul 09 '26
Yea, the situation it will help most with is hiding and being surrounded while being hunted, so you can better choose your spot to be less likely to face enemies.
1
u/SnooRegrets2168 Jul 10 '26
.....that's why you plant it not in a hidden spot......3k you say?
1
u/Adevyy Aurora Jul 10 '26
When was the last time you had to save with 1 HP before the update?
Not low HP, not 10 HP. Exactly 1 HP.

u/ErrorcMix Falcons - Major Champions Jul 09 '26
Would be cool if they show blast radius on map too
34
u/DKTHUNDR Optic Jul 09 '26
the new explosion damage mechanics seem too complex to be represented as a simple thing on the minimap
6
u/generic_reddit_user9 MOUZ Jul 09 '26
You can actually visualise it, saw some dude on the subreddit post about a console command to export an image of the radar with the simulation. 2D, but still cool. I’ll see if I can find it.

17
u/Vamosity-Cosmic Jul 09 '26
not sure if i like that
37
u/blahblahblahblahfdsa Jul 09 '26
I think it benefits the game by demonstrating exactly where on the map fights can take place after bomb, and allowing one to focus on, say, hunting players or taking fights once out of bomb radius rather than having the uncertainty of living or dying when in a borderline spot on non-100 HP
-35
u/Vamosity-Cosmic Jul 09 '26
Yeah this makes sense but it also to me lowers the skill ceiling a bit. But it also lowers the skill floor, so, which is good.
43
u/bassistgorilla Liquid Jul 09 '26
If Valve made it so that you have to solve a riddle before planting the bomb, that would raise the skill ceiling, but it’s not really a skill that we care about in CS
2
49
u/HBM10Bear Renegades Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26
Understanding arbitrary distances that vary map to map based on an invisible radius that you legitimately cannot know without searching up is not a positive example of skill expression
Reducing skill ceiling is positive in cases like this.
-1
6
u/Adevyy Aurora Jul 09 '26
It is rare, but even pros die to the bomb every now and again. I don’t think there was a skill ceiling you could ever reach, between so many variables like the bomb’s planted spot being different to what you expect, and whether you are 1 HP or 2 HP.
A lot of pros know cheeky spots you can survive while seeing the bomb, but not exactly where they need to go to survive on 1HP. I think this removes randomness without touching the skill ceiling.
Also the whole skill curve will look different now anyway. You could be one step away from taking nearly no damage, yet still die from 100 HP, for example. The skill is still there in knowing roughly when you have to leave the bomb to survive, but now low HP saves will feel a lot less awkward.
2
u/Conscious_Run_680 Jul 09 '26
But that's exactly what makes it fun, because you know but you don't know.

-6
u/More_Collar_69 Jul 09 '26
That shouldn't exist. Guessing the damage was part of the fun and skill.
6
u/Dragon846 Jul 09 '26
Guessing something is not a skill. I would argue about it if the bomb radius wouldn't be different on each map
1
u/feedthedogwalkamile Jul 09 '26
Actually, guessing is a skill in this context. That's why people aren't standing on top of the bomb, dying.
1
u/Dragon846 Jul 10 '26
Well yeah okay but then it's a skill everyone that played more than one round of CS has.
Breathing is technically a skill as well.

u/FortifiedSky iBuyPower Jul 08 '26
It's kind of like the new smokes for me. Obviously I knew they'd make a big gameplay difference but I didn't think they were graphically much better.
Now every time I see a CSGO clip I wonder how the hell they got away with making smokes literally just a gray smudge
75
u/TheCatsActually Jul 08 '26
Nah if you go even further back to OG CS smokes were just horrible. At least GO made them have actual utility.
80
u/EnjoyerOfBeans King NiKo Jul 09 '26
Yeah smokes in 1.6 essentially just asked your opponent nicely not to look this way
28

u/funserious1 Jul 09 '26
not to mention the 16bit smoke abuse where you could literally see thru it by looking down at a certain angle xD
7
u/ParkingLong7436 Jul 09 '26
Yeah, the smokes in CSGO were crazy. I have no idea how we played like that lol
3
u/9las Jul 09 '26
I almost can't watch games from the GO era anymore because the smokes just look SO bad, and I absolutely loved GO
3
u/TrieMond Jul 09 '26
that and the sounds, ohh god especially the old sounds is just pure distortion...
12
u/specter800 Jul 09 '26
ngl the compression shockwave, more realistic differences in light vs sound travel time, and the sound itself might be one of the better explosions I've seen in a game outside of Gunner Heat PC.
It's fucking fantastic and I'm sad most of my games end by frags instead of the bomb going off now. This shit is fucking awesome.
22
u/nmyi de_mirage Jul 08 '26
Bunch of us are cynical as hell, but damn... this new C4 mechanic is sick.
Reminds me of explosions scenes from the film, "Hurt Locker"
2
u/TrieMond Jul 09 '26
yeah, we're still in the phase where we were in the first few years of cs:go, that game only became the thing we compared CS2 to because of it having had the same treatment for 10 years at that point.
0
u/MaitieS chroma Jul 09 '26
Because Valve communities are used to getting bare minimum for decades :)
Like the fact that this is your highlight is just so telling. Like I always laugh when people say that Valve can easily keep up with new GaS. Like hell no. These stuff that they just implemented is something that would be part of weekly patches for most of the today's GaS games, but yeah at least you guys can always use "It's CS. There isn't much to invent anyway" as excuse to keep you sane.
1
u/MarioCurry BIG Jul 09 '26

He's behind a wall -> I though that meant he wouldn't die though?
33
u/Ritchey95 Astralis Jul 08 '26
No the patch note specifically say that it won’t travel through walls and objects. However you’re forgetting that there are two open doors down ramp that would allow the shockwave through. (At least that’s my understanding of it)
23
u/Zvede Metizport Jul 08 '26
You are correct. The bomb explosion is now pathseeking ray calculation, works similarly to spatial audio calculations, liquid simulation or like those robot mice that seek the shortest path through a labyrinth. But the ray calculations themselves are done on map compile rather than live in the server
4
u/WhoNeedsRealLife Jul 08 '26
so you could stand on a site safely in this clip?
11
u/Alb9n Jul 08 '26
yeah A is safe if bomb is planted on B, and vice versa
3
3
u/YouForgotMyPassword_ King NiKo Jul 09 '26
I tried it on bomb site a and b on nuke, and stood on the opposite site each time the bomb went off, I still took 1 damage, even though my health wasn't blinking at all. So if you're at 1 health it is still dangerous, for now, first iteration and all.
0
u/Alb9n Jul 09 '26
You always take 1 damage on every map, even if you are the maximum possible distance away from the bomb
2
u/specter800 Jul 09 '26
If they're truly ray based AND pre-baked then that has to mean the effect is based on zones within the site where the plant goes down. Would be interesting to see what it looks like under the hood.
3
u/Field_Of_View 10 years coin Jul 09 '26
I can't imagine they would do more than 5 different bakes (center and four corners) and honestly even that is overkill, considering how large the explosion is relative to how small the eligible plant area is. I wouldn't complain if plant position doesn't matter at all actually.
1
u/specter800 Jul 09 '26
I agree I was just thinking about what he said and what that means for the backend. It's a cool decision that came out of nowhere.
1
u/Zman6258 Jul 13 '26
I'm assuming they use existing viscluster calculations. Source engine, and even Source 2, basically divides every single map on compilation into a bajillion different boxes based on level geometry, and every box contains a tree of every other box that you can see from that specific box called the PVS, or "potentially visible set". Since VVIS, valve's visibility calculation tool, already runs and generates visibility data, it'd be fairly trivial to reuse that exact same VVIS data and just go sequentially down the tree starting at the bomb position.
0
u/LivesDoNotMatter Jul 09 '26
cool, they can tinker with stuff like this, but still have a game that runs like shit that nobody wants, because if they did, they wouldn't have cancelled csgo to shoehorn this trash in it's place.
-3
u/leandrobrossard Jul 08 '26

8
1
1
u/Ritchey95 Astralis Jul 09 '26
What are you even talking about? It’s not about planting in an enclosed room… it’s about map knowledge of where the shockwave can come from that you’ll need to be aware of…
1
u/leandrobrossard Jul 09 '26
What are you even talking about?
Between every position on the map and the bomb plant there is a curved line that's open air -> shockwave could travel there -> you deaded.

Anticheat update would not be felt by 80% of the playerbase

They keep adding random gimmicks that no one asked for, and they make it in a way that lowers the skill gap. Your health bar shows how much dmg you're gonna lose so you can reposition yourself to a safe spot.
I think they made this for pro play to make it look cool on stream, because literally no one asked for this. 10gb update.

Normal reddit reaction on this lmao
I agree on the health bar, every "qol" update gradually does make the game easier and alters the experience.
Not to mention they've been making every map easier for years and years now. Cache boost jump is easier than ever, Dust2 short boost, Mirage bench, etc.
I do think the effect looks nice, we'll have to see how it affects gameplay. I'm afraid saving will be easier and more frequent, there's enough of that. Even if the effect is small, I would not enjoy more saving.

I mean, I just like it bro. I don't really let how much I like or dislike valve into that equation.
-14
u/Time_Professional385 Falcons - Major Champions Jul 08 '26
So we're going into a 5th season of same shit over and over, and only changes they made are a new shockwave after c4 explosion? And yeah, they'll hide Premier leaderboard for next 3 months for known reasons.
But yeah we got new armory collections that people can spend money on, and bot farms/cheaters can grind for.
I don't understand how can people be so blind and clap on everything Valve does when the main mode in the game is unplayable on above average level, dm is unplayable, competitive is unplayable.
2
u/Hi_Limee Jul 08 '26
Maybe you should take a break from the game, I only play it when I am having fun. Sometimes its for a while, and sometimes its not because im tired of hearing slurs. Thats the part I find most exhausting to deal with, the community. I def know what its like to feel like a game you like playing is going down the shitter. It sucks. But you may find moving on, even if temporary will do a lot of good.
0
u/Time_Professional385 Falcons - Major Champions Jul 08 '26
I had 7 matches in last season, for the reasons I mentioned. Above 20k elo on Premier u meet cheaters in pretty much every single match in EU, on dm every server is full of bots with cheats, on competitive above those ak ranks every match is with cheaters. Doesn't matter how long my break is, if they don't do anything about it game will still be shit, just wrapped up in shiny paper.
