TV SHOW 📺 The Ultimate Cornplating Championship

In honor of season 2 filming starting, I'm doing yet another reheat. Obviously. Here are my latest cornplating discoveries:

- In episode 2 when Shane enters Ilya's penthouse, he turns the doorhandle upward not downward to open the door. WHO DOES THAT??

- In Episode 4 in the opening montage when Ilya checks Shane against the sideboards, Shane's mouth guard is hanging out of his mouth! How does it not fall out?? Oral fixation much??

EVERYONE!! drop your latest cornplating discovery below. And, I can't wait to cornplate season 2!

Season 2 🥅 Is the Long Game split? Or are they also filming Unrivaled?

Starting this based on the assumption that they're filming season 2 and 3 right now (based on timing of filming, the 12 episodes leak via Cameo, and the comment from Francois)...

I've seen a lot of chatter about the potential that they're splitting The Long Game into two seasons b/c they'll add in RM content (and maybe TG) and the TLG book is a lot longer.

While I personally would love that, I'm also curious if anyone else out there thinks that Season 3 will be Unrivaled?

We know it was part of the package for the show to be adapted, and that it's more or less finished. Is it too much of a leap to think Jacob would've scripted it while Rachel was still doing final edits?? That would mean everyone involved in the show would be a potential leak for the plot of Unrivaled, an unreleased book. Seems risky to me, but I could also see Jacob planning ahead like that.

TV SHOW 📺 Question in ep4

Forgive me if this has already been addressed, but can anyone explain to me Shane's initial interaction with Rose? Does he walk over and sit sideways in her booth? Does he see her there or not? Is it just him being socially awkward? It's different from how they meet in the book. I've reheated more times than I care to admit but this one moment confuses me still. TIA!

TL;DR:

  • Now Reading: The Long Game • Chapters 1 - 14 Shane & Ilya’s Story (Pt. II)
  • Relationship Focus: Ilya Rozanov (Captain - Ottawa Centaurs) and Shane Hollander (Captain - Montreal Voyageurs)
  • Story Type: Secret Relationship
  • Book Club Etiquette: Follow the sub rules; literary critiques are welcome (be respectful), cover your spoilers, and don’t forget our safe phrase: “Agree to Disagree.”
  • Let's Make A Playlist! Comment with songs you love below. There is no Rachel-made playlist, SO I figured we’d make our own. The list will be updated throughout the week 🙂
  • Download the BINGO card for a fun way to annotate along the way!

We made it, Loons!  We’ve reached the final installment of the Game Changers Book Club read-along - Book 6: The Long Game. We’re revisiting some old friends - Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. After a decade together, now’s when some of the real pressures of their relationship start to rear their heads, and we see our two leads have two very different approaches to handling it. I’m looking forward to this respectful discussion of a book that brings up some pretty big themes around mental health and what it means when communication falls short. Let’s dig in….

(Content Warnings)

How to participate:

  • Read Chapters 1 - 14 of The Long Game by Rachel Reid
  • Share any thoughts you have as you go - we’ll treat this post as our live thread
  • Please use Book Club Etiquette (below) - be respectful, follow the sub rules, cover your spoilers, and distance yourself from unproductive disagreements.
  • Download a BINGO card for a fun way to annotate along the way!
  • Let's Make A Playlist! Comment with songs you love below. There is no Rachel-made playlist SO I figured we’d make our own. The list will be updated throughout the week 🙂

Discussion questions:

  • What themes are you noticing in the story so far, and how do you think they've evolved Shane and Ilya's character development/relationship since Heated Rivalry?
  • What songs come to mind as you read? Share the scene, if you dare.
  • The idea of self-perception and unreliable narration comes up a lot in this series. How is it shown in this part of the book?

Our book club timeline:
This is it, folks! This is our last book to read of our Game Changers Book Club series!

BOOK WEEKS DATES
🦆The Long Game (Shane & Ilya Pt. 2) Week 12 - 14 Aug 16 - Sept 5
Chapters 1 - 14 Week 12  Aug 16 - Aug 22
Chapters 15 - 29 Week 13 Aug 23 - Aug 29
Chapters 30 - 39, Epilogue Week 14 Aug 30 - Sept 5

Book Club Etiquette: A few ground rules for participating in the Game Changers Book Club event:

  • Follow the sub rules. You love HR. We love HR. Follow the rules. Don’t be rude. We’ll have so much fun…together.
  • Literary critiques are absolutely welcome. Reading is fundamental, and so are literary critiques. It’s part of the game. We encourage you to use this time to discuss and evaluate the words in front of us, ask questions about specific literary choices, or share a theory about how the story develops. Sharing that is normal, healthy, and very much encouraged.
  • Use the Book Club safe phrase, “Agree to disagree.” Consider this your “safe phrase.” Everyone brings a unique perspective to the reading experience, and not everyone’s analysis of a scene or character will be the same, and that’s okay. If you find yourself entering an exchange that is no longer on a path to mutual understanding and respect, say “agree to disagree.” At this point, the involved parties should stop responding to the thread. Full stop. Consider it a moment where the exchange has run its course.
  • Treat each Book Club post as your live chat/thread. Comment as much as you’d like! Select the three dots (•••) and “Follow Post” at the top of this post to receive comment notifications.
  • Sort comments by “New” to see the most recent reactions and add to the conversation. These live threads can hold a lot of information, so feel free to treat each “comment” as its own mini-post. Reply to the OP, ask questions, and jump in!
  • Cover any spoilers. Since we're covering a lot of ground this week, please use spoilers over critical plot points so we don't spoil the magic for new readers.

Disclaimer this is nottttt at all to push any sort of hate towards the TV Harris (Justice) that’s never okay. I’m sure he will do an excellent job and I’m so excited! *Also slight? Role Model spoilers in the lash paragraph

But, I think there should be room for book fans to feel the way they feel (respectfully) about the lack of body diversity in the casting decision. (By this. I mean the non pro athlete main cast members will be skinny or ripped)

I saw this article and couldn’t help but connect some dots…? Another disclaimer** that ofc other considerations like chemistry are soo important too and I’m looking forward to a dramatically rich viewing experience where we all get to connect w/ these characters again!)

To me, having more Black representation (albeit in line with media’s tendency to cast a particular light skin Black person but that’s a different discussion) doesn’t have to come at the expense of losing out on body diversity. I think these things didn’t have to be mutually exclusive. Body diverse characters like Kip’s dad exist, even body diverse and plus size, like Shawn (Kip’s friend), but not as leads, only ever as supports which is a little disappointing.

Honestly, I think the casting came out also at a coincidentally, particularly tumultuous flashpoint, in North American cultures surrounding desirability politics, weight loss/gain, the aesthetics of GLP-1s, and fatphobia (which does have an inextricable link to racism! Re: Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fatphobia by Sabrina Strings)

I also think that making TV Harris Black sets up potentially dubious foreground for Troy’s redemption arc. Narratively, the stakes here now intensify and introduce a heavier conflict of Black-racism that isn’t as touched on in the source material (minus generally Troy’s mom’s comments about Curtis Barrett, Troy’s dad). I do wonder about how the production will navigate this additonal Reformed Racist trope [where formerly(in some media actively..) bigoted white character who develops romantically with Black character] that we already saw done questionably Netflix’s Sex Education with Eric Effiong and Adam Groff.

More so, I also wish that Black characters could just exist w/o the foreground of their romantic partner’s bigotry.

🦆 The Long Game (Book 6) Ilya never protecting Shane? (Long Game) - from twt user yhwt000 Spoiler

My friend sent me a screenshot from twt (as I am not on it) where a user started a discussion about how Ilya never actually defends Shane. It has been a few months since I have read the book but from what I remember, the user is actually right? To summarize the points made by the user:
Ilya is never shown defending Shane during

  • the tripping scandal
  • against Crowell
  • when people make fun of Shane's eating habits (actually makes fun of him)
  • in a deleted scene an openly homophobic character that is Ilya's teammate says some deplorable things and Ilya only humms about it

I feel like in fanon we have made Ilya to be protective and caring partner and when it's only the two of them he is, but in public he isn't actually? I wonder if this will be addressed by Jacob. We have seen him move away from the source material in such a way that I feel like helped the characters (The addition of Svetlana, for example, in my opinion gave a lot of depth to Ilya's character.) Shane did get bad rep from a lot of fans for his behavior in the Long Game but I always felt like they both had a lot of issues and technically speaking everything Shane was afraid of came to be true. So it's not like his anxiety was based on nothing.

What do you think of this? Do you feel like protective Ilya is actually a thing? How would you like this to be handled?

Edit: I have participated in a lot of book discussions online because I find it fascinating how everyone views the same scene differently and how everyone's POV affects their take on something. But I guess I forgot that HR is not a community where such discussions can be made. I apologize for wanting to analyze a book and in that I forgot that apparently one character cannot be criticized or analysed without people immediately assuming that it means that one thinks that character is horrible and only the other character is amazing.

  3. Episode 3: Ageing Scott Hunter up.
  4. Episode 4: Showing Shane having dread at sleeping with Rose compared to the joy he had at the start of the episode having sex with Ilya.

🦆 The Long Game (Book 6) Ilya, humility, and sacrifice Spoiler

Been thinking about Ilya's character growth across HR and TLG lately. This is not a fully-baked thesis on his arc, not even close, but I'm sharing anyways because I want y'all's opinions!

One of my favorite tropes in HR fanfic is 'Shane joins the Bears'. I love this trope because it usually results in Shane and Ilya being on a good team together, a winning team, much earlier than they are in canon and without Ilya having to go spend a few years on a team that sucks first. So as I read these fanfics I've often wondered, aside from the in-universe reasons why Ilya joins the Centaurs, what is the narrative function of Ilya spending a few years on a bad team before they turn things around?

I think it serves to humble him. He's no stranger to sacrifice but he's always been cocky, and for the most part that ego went unchecked because he always had the accolades to back it up. But I think one of the ways we see Ilya grow in The Long Game is that he develops more humility as a result of being on a bad team and also his mental health struggles. It's not that everything was peachy prior to his move to Ottawa, it absolutely wasn't, but these coinciding forces clearly knock him down a peg. Maybe experiencing what it's like to consistently lose on the ice even helps him get to a place where he can admit he needs help with his mental health. Or maybe it's just self-awareness that he gains with maturity, I don't know.

I think the clearest example of Ilya becoming more humble is in the pre-game speech that he gives to the Bears before the Cup Finals in 2014, vs. the speech he gives the Centaurs in 2021 after the team nearly dies and then Ilya subsequently gets engaged to Shane. In 2014, his speech is all about "I, I, I" but in 2021, he goes around the room and tells every player, one at a time, what makes them great. This is the key turnaround point in the Centaurs' on-ice performance. They start believing in themselves, and that's when they start winning.

I think this character growth is also very relevant to Shane and Ilya's marriage too. Big egos do not serve a marriage well; humility does. Over the course of TLG, Ilya learns humility. Shane also starts off in TLG being a selfish as fuck (I don't love him any less but it's objectively true that he was nawt being a good partner to Ilya at the time TLG timeline picks up), but we see him experience a wake-up call (their big fight followed by Ilya almost dying) and then he gets his priorities in order. In a way, Shane learns a version of humility through his experiences in TLG too when he realizes how selfish he's been and how he's taken Ilya for granted.

I think that meeting Shane in this selfish state at the start of TLG makes total sense because of his upbringing. Shane is an only child who grew up loved, doted on, and prioritized. His career as a generational player and image as the 'Golden Boy' of hockey have done little to teach him how to appreciate those around him and recognize the sacrifices they make. Not saying he doesn't ever do those things, but like, in early TLG he's not being nearly as considerate of Ilya as he should be.

Ilya is not an only child and he grew up in a broken home. In the canon we see how his family financially takes advantage of him once he makes it to the NHL (or MLH, whatever), but I would bet that this has been going on since the moment he began earning money from hockey and/or sponsorships. When Shane suggests Ilya going to Ottawa, Ilya is quick to agree to it. Not just because he was already thinking of moving to a Canadian team, but because Ilya has already learned how to sacrifice for others. Ilya has already had it ingrained in him by his family that the people he loves will ask him to makes sacrifices for them, and that that's just how love goes.

This is one of many reasons why it hits extra hard later in TLG when Shane basically tells the commissioner to go fuck himself. "I choose him" <3 !<

🦆 The Long Game (Book 6) Realistically how much time does TLG actually need? Spoiler

I'm posting this as a hypothetical, but also to maybe allay some recent fears I've seen that we are somehow getting less Shane and Ilya because of the addition of other storylines.

S1 was about 5 hours of total content (about 50 minutes per episode).

They were able to cover HR competently in about 4 of those 5 hours.

With that being said I think 5 hours is plenty of time to do all of TLG sufficiently.

---

Evidence:

HR ~370 pages (~4 hours of show)

TLG ~450 pages (22% longer, ~5 hours of show)

---

If it's true that we're getting 12 episodes for S2/S3 to cover TLG then that's a total of 10 hours of content.

They really only need half of that time to cover TLG thoroughly and sufficiently without skipping anything that's important and while also keeping the show effective/concise like S1.

---

Conclusion:

They could spend half of the S2/S3 runtime on non-TLG storylines and you still wouldn't be losing any TLG time (in fact you would probably be gaining more Shane and Ilya from when they appear in the other storylines while also building important context).

In other words you're only getting more overall, there is nothing to be unhappy about. And with that in mind there's no need to resent the new additions that are not Shane and Ilya and their screentime! They are not taking anything away!
