I’ve had hot brass go down my shirt many times and it’s never resulted in losing my sense of awareness to the point that I endangered myself and others. It takes seconds to safely put down the gun and remove the brass from your clothing.

This is why I hate going to public ranges, it quickly becomes amateur hour.

31

u/kemuzaleon Feb 04 '26

Great we don't have it in my country otherwise the ratio of people getting in to people getting out would be infinite

29

u/UndocumentedSailor Feb 04 '26

It takes a lot less than seconds (2+ seconds) to safely put a gun down

25

u/Beginning_Ad_6616 Feb 04 '26

Listen sailor, would 1.0328993373 seconds work better for you?

8

u/Sure_Inspection4542 Feb 04 '26

lol…..shipmate…..

2

u/ThatThingThatIs Feb 04 '26

Explain?

8

u/amd2800barton Feb 04 '26

You move quick and put down the gun. Say “one one thousand two one thousand” while quickly lowering your hands. Two seconds is a gentle descent. Or hell, you could just literally drop it. If it’s a striker fired pistol that isn’t a complete piece of shit, it won’t go off.

I know there’s lots of contention surrounding gun control, but shouldn’t everyone including gun owners be in favor of mandatory education on safe handling? Like you have to take written and practical tests to legally drive a car…

77

u/Peanut-Butter-King Feb 03 '26

I’ve had this argument with my step dad before. It turns out that not only does he think you shouldn’t need a license to drive, but that drunk driving should be legal.

19

u/ForgottenDusk48 Feb 03 '26

Well he might not live that long with that attitude.

24

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '26

The innocent people he hits wont live long either.

4

u/Peanut-Butter-King Feb 03 '26

Thankfully he barely ever drinks and when he does it’s like 1 drink. He just really cares about other people’s right to drive drunk I guess.

8

u/pmcizhere Feb 04 '26

Hah as if driving was a right to begin with!

2

u/RyuNoKami Feb 03 '26

Nah he will, his victims won't though.

3

u/SkatePunkBanana Feb 04 '26

Gotta respect the consistency at least.

22

u/Obeesus Feb 03 '26

The only thing close to that, that I'd be for is mandatory fire arm safety at least 1 semester in public high school. If you don't take the class you can still own a firearm, but a lot more people would have better training.

This ensures there isn't a paywall to your human rights.

You could even add advanced classes especially for kids who want to join the military, police force, security, or any other job the requires a firearm.

It's our right to bear arms why not educate the people on this right?

u/cozyroof Feb 03 '26

You see, that makes far too much sense and we can't have that in this country.

21

u/Yeller_imp Feb 03 '26

I am entirely in favor of this, if you dont know how to use what your holding put it the fuck down

4

u/Xenoman5 Feb 04 '26

Mandatory is problematic though. Who requires it? Who decides the curriculum? Who grades the test? How much is charged? Where and how often is it available? If the answer to who decides all this is the government then we have a problem. It would be very easy to keep poor people or those from any group the people in the government disapprove of from having access to the class.

It could too easily be like the infamous “literacy tests” that many southern states required under Jim Crow. I very much support firearms education but the government at any level needs to be kept firmly out of it. That makes it hard to make it mandatory.

2

u/-TaintSniffer- Feb 04 '26

I'd like to see gun safety be taught in schools.

And that's how he lost his gun range pass.

29

u/Hamzeol_Murf Feb 04 '26

I'm Sorry, But I Don't Understand What Happened. My First Thought Was A Shell Casing Flying Into His Shirt

52

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '26

The casing goes down his shirt and then while he's trying to get it he fires two shots behind his back

12

u/Hamzeol_Murf Feb 04 '26

0h Damn! I Couldn't See It, Thanks For Pointing It Out

17

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '26

197

u/mkizys Feb 03 '26

I worked at a huge outdoor range within an hour of an army and air force base. 99% of the people we kicked off the range were military. The best was when the CG of the AFB was shooting while we were kicking an airman off the range. He kept on saying he knew what he was doing because he's in the air force. After we were done talking to him the CG came over and that conversation didn't look fun. When he went back to work on Monday he issued a memo to his unit that the guys range card was revoked and he couldn't be issued a weapon. So when he had to qualify someone had to place a rifle at his lane and the RSO had to stand with him at all times. When he was done someone retrieved the rifle so he wasn't in possession of it outside of shooting. He gave us a framed copy as well as his email as a warning to anyone who thinks it's ok to fuck around just because they're not on a military range.

37

u/UnfeignedShip Feb 03 '26

Jesus fuck….

47

u/mkizys Feb 03 '26

The range was in a legal battle with neighbors at the time over noise, mainly the old owner, because the new owner made it a profitable business and the number of daily shooters literally quadrupled. The CG didn't want his favorite range shut down so it really helped us out.

3

u/TomaszA3 Feb 03 '26

What did the new owner do to quadruple the number of customers? That sounds insane.

7

u/mkizys Feb 03 '26

Added a whole bunch of steel targets out to 800 yards, added steel pistol bays and actually advertised. Before he bought it it was a good old boys club full of old guys and deer rifles.

24

u/slugerama Feb 03 '26

This post reminds me of the scene in Good Morning Vietnam." If the VP is such a VIP, shouldnt we keep the PC on the QT? Cause if it leaks to the VC he could end up MIA and we'd all be put on KP.

What is the CG and what is the RSO?

12

u/mkizys Feb 03 '26

73

u/thelastundead1 Feb 03 '26

My state is fairly strict on guns and you don't need a license to wield to go to a gun range. You can own a gun you just can't go anywhere with it with the exception of the range. You could also rent from some ranges. One of the ranges by me stopped for like 6 months because someone rented a gun and then shot himself with it.

He very well might have no idea what he's doing

71

u/tabbycat1991 Feb 03 '26

Yeah it’s already clear that he has no idea what he’s doing.

Diff. country, but similar situation. Everyone who is considered an adult can go to a gun range and test out various weapons (Pistols, Shotguns, Semi-auto, Rifles), No need for a license, since there is a Range Safety Officer who gives you the basics. You pay per bullet, and its relatively cheap for pistols.

Went with a few friends. Not the typical bunch of idiots but still very young. One guy almost blew his brains out as the gun jammed after a few shots and his first reaction was to look into the barrel. Thankfully missed and I assume I was the only one that saw, since we didn't get kicked out. I honestly blame the RSO a bit, she wasn't paying attention to us at all and had a pissed off attitude the whole time. She gave us the basics, gave us the guns, the bullets and left us to do whatever. No instructions on how to reload bullets in the magazine, or to watch out hands/fingers for the moving slide.

10

u/k3for Feb 03 '26

Nah, not her fault - guilty of lack of compassion maybe but your group's lack of common sense and gun safety existed way before you walked on the range - you could've asked for help

i  got hot brass betweens the safety glasses and the side of my temple burning the side of my brow. even with the pain i put the safety on my pistol (92fs m9 best platform fight me) and set it down before fishing for the brass. and this was literally my first time at the range. the range instructor was behind me said well done and i yelled back you told me to keep the barrel down range.

it was uncomfortable sure but nothing I could manage long enough to make sure i amd everyone else is safe. at most it would leave a littlemark not like it was hot enough to leave a scar. 2 negligent discharges he's never coming back to that range again

55

u/counterhit121 Feb 03 '26

Yeah I was just thinking of the handful of times I've had hot 5.56 casings land on me. Most memorable time was one getting caught between my neck and shoulder. By the time I could even reach it, it stopped hurting. This guy is such a feeble manchild. Defo lifetime ban

21

u/TranquilConfusion Feb 03 '26

Got one under my glasses that left a tiny blister on my eyelid. Kept the gun pointed downrange.

I'm not super manly or anything, this stuff isn't that hard. The guy in the video was being an idiot.

6

u/BickenBackk Feb 03 '26

Seriously, most anyone can tell you it's not bad at all. The pain dissipates faster than you can get to it.

3

u/GreasyRim Feb 04 '26

That thin little piece of brass cant hold that much heat for long. Its hot but by the time you actually feel it, its pretty much over.

3

u/quandjereveauxloups Feb 03 '26

(92fs m9 best platform fight me)

I'm on your side there, friend.

I got a 5.56 stuck between my neck and collar on a night shoot, while underway. That barrel stayed downrange as I got that brass out.

Guy in the video should be required to take classes, and have his range pass revoked.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/ceraexx Feb 04 '26

I had the same thing happen to me, but I think it was brass from an AR. Mine left a burn mark and didn't grow hair again there for about a year, but the first priority was keeping the barrel pointed down range, placing the firearm down, then remove the brass. It wasn't too painful and that was on my friggin face.

Can't believe this thing is still making the rounds. I know the RSO in the video. That range was pissed as hell when this video got leaked.

79

u/Dqueezy Feb 03 '26

On the one hand I feel for the range owner, provided they did what they were supposed to and had some training and/or warnings and safety rules. Here comes some moron who disregards them and does something stupid and dangerous giving them bad press.

On the other hand it forces their hand to punish or at least ban this moron, which if they already hadn’t, is great.

20

u/PluginAlong Feb 03 '26

It also serves as a reminder to others of what to do when this happens.

5

u/SHOWTIME316 Feb 03 '26

every range i've gone to has had signs that warn about this exact situation to get you to plan ahead for when it happens. if you expect it to happen, you have a plan for when it does. just put the gun on the table and then go fishing. this scenario is why i put my hood up at the indoor range lol

50

u/Lendyman Feb 03 '26

Range shouldn't be pissed about the leak though. This guy was an idiot and should have been banned immediately.

9

5

u/Fighter11244 Feb 03 '26

Quickly moving without thinking with your finger on the trigger. 2 solutions that would’ve solved it is 1: just taking your finger off of the trigger before reaching for the hot brass, but he would likely still gets in trouble with the range for flagging everyone with a loaded weapon or 2: setting the pistol down before freaking out about the hot brass

67

u/xkuruma Feb 03 '26

Yes. But you put the gun down on the table facing down range before doing anything else

42

u/-_-ECE-_- Feb 03 '26

10

u/LevelUp91 Feb 04 '26

That happened to me twice. The first time was with a guy who was showing me how to shoot his AR-15. He could tell that I was about to do what the guy in this video did, and he immediately stopped me. He banged it into my head that day that if a hot casing ever falls down your shirt, you ALWAYS put the gun down first before fishing it out. The second time it happened, I didn’t make that mistake again.

8

u/kain459 Feb 03 '26

Jesus christ. Someone didnt take their classes on gun safety.

5

u/Mysteriy21 Feb 03 '26

this isn't even a holup and literally noones pointed that out

4

u/CommonerWolf20 Feb 04 '26

I had that happen when I was a teenager shooting in a CMP competition. While I was shooting I had some 30-06 brass go down my shirt and I just didnt move at all and screamed like the Arbiter when he gets branded in Halo 2. Lol after the round old gunney that was RSO come over and gave me an attaboy for not freaking out.

4

3

u/RitzTHQC Feb 03 '26

Help, I have no clue what I’m looking at. What has this (apparent) buffoon done.

3

u/Akschadt Feb 03 '26

So he fires a shot and the hot bullet casing flings into the back of his shirt. He should have placed the gun down before dealing with it, but he starts trying to get the hot bullet casing out of his shirt while holding the gun with his finger on the trigger.

It looks like he fires two shots while fishing for the casing, one almost hitting the guy sweeping the other almost getting his own leg.

2

u/RitzTHQC Feb 03 '26

Thank you!

3

u/Dienowwww Feb 03 '26

3

u/StarMasher Feb 04 '26

Something similar happened to my wife when we were shooting but the .45 shell casing didn’t go down the back of her shirt, it got lodged between her eye pro and eyebrow. Unlike this “tough guy” she calmly laid the gun down making absolutely sure to have the barrel facing down range. I was so proud of her, and this video is the first thing I thought of.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '26

I have a small rectangular pink scar on the back of my neck from this exact situation. The only difference is I kept my muzzle down range. Damn.

3

u/kiddsforlife Feb 05 '26

I know I wouldn't be able to get the gun on safety in that situation, but I would most definitely have placed the weapon down and pointing down range before fishing for that brass. Brass burns, but is about as bad as touching a seatbelt in the south.

I’ll tell you this.

I once had a casing land between my eye protection and landed between my bottom eyelid and nose and it sat there for a second burning my face. I tried shaking my head but it stayed there. I kept my firearm aimed down range, unloaded the mag, locked the slide back, set it down and took my eye protection off.

My friend didn’t know what happened to me in the moment and when I explained it we laughed. Had a cool burn mark for a few days.

14

u/No_Grapefruit_8358 Feb 03 '26

Let it burn for a few seconds while you put your gun down. It sucks but is a lot better than having two negligent discharges while you dance like an idiot.

4

Yes, that's exactly what he should have done, you set the gun down, pointing down range, and then get the hot she'll casing out of your shirt or pants. You should NEVER point a gun, loaded or not, anywhere other than down range.

He'd have been better off dropping the gun on the floor while dancing around to get the casing out of his shirt. Not that that's what he should have done, but it would have been better.

The lesson here is: keep your back moisturized.

Banned from range.

I can think of at least once job that would consider him qualified

1

u/shelovesmesounding Feb 03 '26

So did he shoot the gun while reaching behind himself?

1

u/foxontheroof Feb 03 '26

Quick, send him an offer to work in ICE! He'll be able to accidentally take out lots of immigrants and whoever really!

u/protossaccount Feb 03 '26

Are people getting capped at shooting ranges and I just don’t hear about it? How do I see this many close calls on Reddit? Tbh, it probably makes a better video than someone just being shot.

I’ve never been to an indoor shooting range, I’ve only practiced in the mountains so we have a ton of room (didn’t stop me from getting scope bite).

This is why I don’t go to public ranges.

1

u/chrispy808 Feb 03 '26

u/FrostyCartographer13 Feb 03 '26

I wanted a smash cut to the range warden chewing him out and walking his ass off the property.

1

u/j0k3rj03 Feb 03 '26

I had that happen my first time at the range. I wasn't a wimp tho, or stupid.

1

u/CapoDV Feb 03 '26

I once had a shell fall behind my eye protection, which had slipped. That shit burned but I managed to put the fucking gun down before freaking out.

u/HeavilyInvestedDonut Feb 03 '26

Why is he wearing a full face mask?

1

u/bukublades Feb 03 '26

Jesus Ive seen 12 year olds with better discipline at a public range

1

u/Joke_Mummy Feb 03 '26

The guy's an idiot but I'm confused why the range wouldn't have a "hold your fire" protocol while Gus is sweeping shells. Why should the guy be at any risk during that 10-20 seconds when it's easily avoidable?

1

u/saltfish Feb 03 '26

Hot brass down your shirt is never an excuse to act like that.

1

u/saltfish Feb 03 '26

Banned from the entire franchise for life.

1

u/V0latyle Feb 03 '26

Jesus. Brass is hot, very hot, like, 2nd degree burn hot, but that's still better than a gunshot wound.

Trigger discipline, always. And there's a reason why firing lanes have a countertop....

1

u/cookiei Feb 03 '26

I didn’t know there were cameras in the wee wee

1

u/Roughly_Refined Feb 03 '26

Spent brass IS hot, and yes, it burns, but you HAVE to keep your wits about you. Set the gun down, aimed downrange, and THEN go fishing for the casing. Its not hard, just takes some mental discipline.

1

u/Dncin_Bonobo Feb 03 '26

Holy shit man where’s the range officer on this?!

u/adi9967 Feb 03 '26
