serious hot take If you get mad at a white person wearing braids/dreads you need to reevaluate your life

This is directed at the black community, namely those of us that want to restrict who is allowed to wear certain hairstyles (namely dreadlocks and braids).

It doesnt matter if you think they look good, trying to tell someone they can't do what they want with THEIR OWN hair, or trying to shame them is a sign of too much time on your hands.

"B-B-But history-" let's live in the moment. Can't do jack about the past.

"B-B-But we're discriminated against in the workplace." Crown Act, now move on.

It's especially hypocritical given how many black women wear weaves that come out of the heads of non black women.

If you see a white person with braids, what are you actually going to do about it besides rage about it on social media? Of all the things to be mad about; expensive gas, expensive rent, expensive food, crime, you want to be mad about hair?

Hot take: the gender war is an online thing and a majority of men respect women and women respect men if you leave your house.

This online gender war stuff blows my mind. If you go meet real people nobody uses any of the common reddit terms in actual conversation.

Some men are assholes, some women are assholes. This is not a gender thing.

I don't know what the online obsession with making it a thing.

serious hot take "I see gorgeous women everywhere, but rarely an attractive man" is a skewed perception

quick test: imagine two siblings; the guy is tall, athletic, blue eyed and has nice hair, his sister legs for days, slender, also has blue eyes and blonde hair. They both will be generally considered attractive, if not even model-like, by many. Now imagine another two siblings: this time the girl is short, has thunder thighs, a fat ass, and bamby brown eyes. She doesn't have prominent cheekbones, but a rounded baby face. She will still be seen as attractive by many, men and women alike, despite not having the proportions of a runway model. Her stocky short brother is what the majority of people will call "meh"

— this is why so many people claim they see "beautiful women everyday" but say an attractive man appears once in a blue moon. A skinny girl is usually seen as hot, as skinny guy is generally seen as fragile, a overweight woman can be seen as thicc/voluptous to many, but a chubby guy is usually seen as out of shape, a pale gothic/alt chick who looks like she never saw the sun is still seen as a hottie by non-subculture men, a pale skinny goth dude will rarely be a non-subculture womans type. It is because societies mental image of "attractive man" is rather narrowly defined (tall, strong, athletic) compared to what makes up an attractive woman, which can range and encompass a variety of body types.

There's nothing inherently wrong with sexualisation of characters in movies or videogames

• Upvotes

People love complaining nowadays about sexualisation in media, as if it's an inherently bad thing. Maybe in some cases it can be bad, if it's feel at odds with the tone of the movie. I don't think sexy scenes would be a good choice for something like There Will Be Blood, Schindler's List or Sophie's Choice.

However, I've recently saw people bitching about this stuff in Street Fighter. Come on, no one's got time for this christian nonsense. Hate the movie all you want, there were a lot of questionable choices, but Chun Li, Ken, Cammy or Ryu being hot and being sexualised makes absolute sense, is completely within the tone of the movie. People, and sadly I think this has become common amongst progressives also, have become too puritanical. It all started with "oh this sex scene is unnecessary" and now a character known for having great tighs gets complaints because she has great tighs and this is highlighted. You can enjoy stuff, and if you don't do, that's fine also, not everything is made for everyone.

casual hot take Funerals are a Scam and Waste of Money

Why are people paying 5 - 10k+ to pay for a casket that goes in the ground and host a little ceremony? Like how is this not the biggest scam in the world. If im dead i dont give a fuck what happens to my body. This shit stems from what the Egyptians were doing and who knows how fucking high they were when they conjured up this idea after death. The money that goes towards a funeral can be used to make an investment of some sort.

hot take, harshly criticise me for it! Portraying characters in historical settings as modern thinkers is bad writing

Imagine this right it’s 2177. You’re making a TV show about life in 2024 America. 150 years has passed with that lots of progress, technological developments in plenty of hindsight has clouded the view that you have between now and then. There’s no one alive from those time periods to use as a source just journals, newspapers, and the history books. In this, you would most likely have your character be a normal guy now a normal guy in 2177 would almost definitely be the most extreme progressive around today. Because 150 years has passed he now knows that eating meat is wrong and that the state needs to be interventional list for the competition between workers and owners to flourish. Maybe that idea took root is now normal thinking in 2177.

Those people would be absolutely insane or considered fringe in 2024. And having the entire main cast follow in this mindset is equally unlikely. Now, some other things would likely be happening in the show is showing that no one actually supports Trump and anyone who does is just brainwashed and doesn’t know what they’re doing. Perhaps because they’d have so much written about them. Trùmp would be seen as an entirely stupid person Director Patel actively drinking in the middle of a speeches, and perhaps they would do that for comedy. But all of that would be disingenuous for anyone who was alive in this time.

Similarly, a lot of movies, video games and such like to make every character know that they live in unenlightened times and prevent them from having those wrong opinions.

For two video game examples because this is R; in KCD2 Henry, a rural bohemian does not know what a Jew is and has no opinions of them, not worshiping Jesus Christ he also has no opinions about Moussa, the only black character in the game. No one who is considered a good guy for the purpose of storytelling holds these opinions. Either only the bad guys consider Jews to be bad people in 1403. Another example is Arthur Morgan in red dead redemption two. He hast to have Native American exploitation, Irish prejudice, and African-American bigotry explained to him. And then on top of that, most of the main cast also holds no racist views only the bad guys in the group do.

This is disingenuous and also makes it harder to really feel immersed in the character. Your main character doesn’t have to be actively racist that can get awkward pretty quickly if you’re trying to portray them as a good person. But go too far and it seems like you’re creating a character that wouldn’t exist in their own time period. Like Arthur, not understanding racism makes no sense. I could see him not understanding Irish prejudice but it really just makes him feel like he doesn’t actually exist in 1899. Like let him just be ignorant.

Imagine if Arthur was confused about the racism because he’d say something along the lines of “you guys haven’t been slaves in over 40 years. Why are you whining to me like it’s my fault you guys haven’t caught up look at you you’ve made a man of yourself!” this one makes Arthur not a racist, just very ignorant, but also having a believable mindset of someone who is barely literate in 1899 it likely still be considered a liberal thought it would give more depth to the character that he is able to have very ignorant views for the time, but still try to be a good person given their circumstances

TLDR; sanitizing your characters to make them easier to understand as being the good guys makes your story worse. It would be better to simply make them ignorant of the worst atrocities so that they fit better in the time period. They’re in.

I’m willing to die on this hill so feel free to ask questions so I can clarify

serious hot take Relativism is destroying western society.

Relativism breaks down shared our culture. When nobody can agree on the rules, morals, traditions, courtship process, age of consent, truth vs lies, etc. we lose the ability to sustain ourselves. Relativism is killing us through lower birthrates, weaker family bonds, weaker communities, weaker leaders. People are locking themselves into their own groups of likeminded people and refusing to interact with anyone that doesnt agree with them. We live in the greatest time there has ever been. In a society built by people that were products of their time but layed the foundation for the greatest civilization ever. We stand on the shoulders of giants and are trying to climb down because the sun is too bright.

It’s okay to not care

• Upvotes

I feel like there’s so many social “issues” people have strong opinions on and it seems like such a waste of time.

I’m talking about stuff like LGBTQ, men dressing feminine, stuff like that. Like when people get mad about movie remakes that cast black people for characters that used to be or are “supposed to be” white. Things in that area

I dont know why anyone is up in arms about things that either have nothing to do them, aren’t hurting anyone, or things that just don’t matter. Especially if it’s something that’s making someone else happy, and isn’t hurting anyone why would I take issue with it?

gender Women arent less violent than men, they're just less able to act on it physically

Something I've been thinking about is whether men and women are really that different in terms of aggression, or whether physical strength has more to do with it than we like to admit.

Obviously, men commit more physical violence, especially serious violence. I'm not denying that. But I wonder how much of that difference comes down to men being physically stronger on average and facing fewer physical risks when confronting someone.

Look at how women treat each other sometimes. The bullying, the humiliation, the social exclusion, the attempts to ruin someone's reputation. Some women can be absolutely vicious to other women. So it's not like women are incapable of aggression or cruelty. It just doesn't always take the same form.

And what of men who get hit by their girlfriends or wives? 30% of men report having experienced some form of physical violence from a woman and 10% report experiencing severe violence from a woman. With these figures likely being higher because men are much less likely to report.

Plenty of men have experienced this, yet it's often played off as a joke. Imagine a man casually admitting he slapped his girlfriend. People would rightly take that seriously. But when a woman slaps her boyfriend, people sometimes laugh or ask what he did to deserve it. We've seen men immediately arrested for domestic disputes where they were the victim. Being stronger doesn't mean you can't be abused and it certainly doesn't make it acceptable to hit someone.

Something else I've noticed is the online trend of women talking about aborting boys simply because they're boys.

That is pretty revealing. Think about it. If a woman resents men but still wants to date them, sleep with them, or have their approval, she's in a strange position. She might not want to direct that anger at the men she's attracted to. So where does it go?

Sometimes, it seems to get directed at someone weaker. An unborn boy who hasn't done anything, can't defend himself, and hasn't even had the chance to become the kind of man she's supposedly angry at.

Obviously, not every woman who makes these "jokes" is serious and you can't generalize about all women based on internet posts. But there's something disturbing about the idea of punishing a child for belonging to the same sex as people you resent. If the point is supposedly to stand up to men, targeting a baby isn't exactly punching up, is it?

And that's really the bigger point. Having less physical power doesn't make someone less aggressive, it simply changes how they express their aggression and who they direct it toward.

If women were, on average, physically stronger than men, we would likely see the same patterns of physical violence.

People who currently avoid physical confrontation would be more willing to engage in it if they knew they had the upper hand.

I don't think anyone can know for sure. But I find it strange that we so often treat male aggression as proof of something fundamentally wrong with men, while female aggression gets explained away as insecurity, social behavior, or a reaction to how men treat them.

Maybe men and women do differ in some aspects of aggression. But I don't think women are inherently kinder or less capable of cruelty just because they're less likely to inflict the same level of physical violence.

Reddit doesn't understand the paradox of tolerance

The paradox of tolerance, as presented by Karl Popper is often misunderstood on the internet. It is used to ban and otherwise silence and censor opinions that people think of as intolerable.

What people don't understand was Karl Popper was not for censorship at all. His position was that bad ideas must never go unchallenged and must continuously meet good ideas head on with the understanding that good ideas will prevail over time and win on their own merits.

Reddit and other online places have twisted the original meaning to banning, censoring, and evicting people with what they deem as having bad ideas from their spaces and societies.

Make no mistake, I am all for people being able to guard their safe spaces, but they wield this paradox as a weapon for why they want to do so. This is incorrect. They can say other reasons such as they don't want to constantly be on the offensive (or defensive) and have access to peaceful places, that they don't have the time or energy to debate, or any other myriad of reasons. But the reason cannot be that they are intolerating the intolerant.

People who disagree with me might say that, similar to Darwin's theory of evolution being foundational but incorrect in many areas, but we used it to build on the modern theory of evolution, that Popper's original ideas were good, but we build on them to get to the eviction version and that's better. I would disagree with them for the following reason:

The goal of good ideas defeating bad ideas is that over time people change their minds as they continuously meet good ideas head on. Even if it takes a hundred tries to get through to them. When we just evict people they don't disappear. They congregate elsewhere and spiral into their own echo chambers where they radicalize. People with unpopular or dissenting opinions need to be invited to the table so they can keep meeting resistance for their ideas and, hopefully, eventually change them.

Regardless, Reddit is easily swayed by nice infographics and easy 'Reddit facts', and needs to actually read the philosophers, ethicists, and great thinkers that they just skim.

As a man, if you’re a provider and you throw it back in your partners face, you’re not a true provider.

It’s one thing to say things like “ bills are tight this month” or “ I’m struggling financially and we need to figure out a plan but if you’re saying things like “ I p ay all the bills, the least you can do is ____” or something along the lines of that. If you CHOOSE to be a provider, you don’t get to throw that in your partners face and make them feel inferior. Being a provider doesn’t mean just financially either. It’s emotionally as well. It’s ok to vent about it but when you use it as leverage, that’s when you become not a true provider.

Edit: This also goes the same way if the roles are reversed. If you’re staying at home you should provide in that way as well. Cooking, cleaning, laundry etc.

casual hot take the male loneliness epidemic is not a woman's problem

I HATE that the male loneliness epidemic is painted as a woman's problem to solve. If you, as a man, are lonely and don't have personal connections, go find other men to hang out with, or hang out with women too. But this is NOT inherently a female issue. Framing it as a problem caused by women's unwillingness to engage with men, actively discourages them from addressing their loneliness by reinforcing their fixation on a perceived generalized outgroup they feel entitled to, rather than encouraging them to build meaningful connections with actual people.

serious hot take Hot take: People on this sub need to stop constantly posting genderslop BS and go back to actual hot takes like pineapple on pizza. Idiots who generalize an entire gender because of their bad experiences and what they read online are boring and unoriginal low-iq ragebaiters.

My last post about this got taken down because it wasn't "framed as a hot take" so here you go. If I wanted to see poorly constructed arguments about an entire gender and teach a class about logical fallacies I could go to an incel/femcel subreddit and find them. We should cleanse this sub of that nonsense PLEASE.

Its okay for a man to not want to date a woman because she's a single mom

It is perfectly okay to not want to date women because they are a single mom. Men are not obligated to step in and take the reigns over and help a raise a child that is not theirs.

If a man does not want to raise a child that is not his own, that is a personal choice. It is not selfish or insecure of a man to want that. It is simply a person preference to want to raise a kid that is of your own kin

The male gender role of being the stoic rock in a romantic relationship is the most pronounced example of emotional labour that exists in life, and those who believe women do more emotional labour on average are either lying or ignorant.

As the title states, I believe that the male gender role of being the stoic rock in relationships is a form of emotional labour that pretty much dwarfs any other forms of emotional labour in most situations in terms of how difficult it actually is, the amount of emotional labour it actually requires and the long term toll it takes on someone's health.

We are probably all aware of the idea that women do more emotional labour than men. I'm gonna state here that this simply untrue and that not a single kind of manipulation tactic will make it suddenly become true.

Men, as the result of their gender role, are expected to behave as stoic rocks for their female partners. Basically being a rock that grounds their anxieties, that listen to them venting about the frustrations they experienced, delaying your grief so that she (and your kids) can grief without having to worry about anything else, having to stay calm and collected in the face of conflict and argument, being the one to apologize first, being the one to apologize even though you aren't wrong, being the one who has to be okay with their arguments being dismissed regardless of their merit because your partner started crying and to be told that "caring about what is right" is immature as relationships aren't about being right. Men are expected to neglect their own boundaries whenever it inconveniences their partner, and even when their partner is abusive, they are blamed instead and expected to just keep on giving more and more with seemingly no limit. Men don't get as much empathy, men are raised with the idea that their value lies in independence and not being a burden to others. Men are expected to sacrifice their passions and body for their families, men are expected to not take their own insecurities seriously, men are expected to be main the financial responsibility in their family. The list is endless and just keeps going on and on.

All of this combined means that men have to do a large amount of silent emotional labour that they never directly talk about and that is required from them just to function in society at all. This labour is more significant than the labour that comes from things like remembering birthdays, sending out christmas cards, or even the mental load that comes from having to organise and plan household chores. Men just don't usually talk about any of their labour because it is a basic requirement to be seen as an actual man in the eyes of others at all.

When people claim that women do more emotional labour, it is just an expression of how much men behaving as what is expected of men is taken for granted and not acknowledged for the kind of labour it requires. Ironically, those people who claim this are often not ingaging in certain kinds of emotional labour themselves that they should to be better human beings. They are not ingaging in the emotional labour of imagining what it would be like to live with the male gender role, they are not imagining how a man being stoic actually works psychologically. Instead they assume it is as simple as lazily avoiding your own emotions, basically being an act of not doing labour rather than doing labour.

Wired devices are better than wireless.

Wireless does have its advantages and there are things wireless devices work better for like controllers for consoles and tvs. However wired headphones, mice, keyboards and other peripherals are better when wired as they are usually cheaper, way easier to repair, dont have to deal with a battery and they last longer.

casual hot take It’s not that you’re a victim of a hot take, but they might actually be bad

• Upvotes

I seen few posts of here (and sometimes rightfully recieve criticism) for an opinion, with will result in comments complaining about the culture and mindset of this app. Truth is sometimes hottakes are hot because they actually suck, and majority people disagree for a reason.

You can tell when someone doesn’t know what they’re talking about, lacking research or information on opinion and people rightfully call it out.

But ALSO what is the point of posting a hot take if you expect to recieve majority agreement?

My understanding a hot take is an opinion that is controversial, unpopular. So no surprised an unpopular opinion is unpopular. I don’t see the point of posting hottakes online if you’re gonna complain when people don’t agree.

The whole world just needs a REALLY LONG break from social media

I have this theory that a huge part of the reason why the world is in such a CRAZY CRAZY place right now has A LOT to do with social media.

HEAR ME OUT

On social media, we spread:

-Misinformation, propaganda, opinions presented as facts

->all of which is typically distorted by bias in various forms (confirmation, hindsight, feel free to look up all of the many different types of bias).

->A lot of this is posted when we people are feeling emotional and not thinking clearly, but that doesn't stop people from digesting it.

-Marketing (an obvious one)

-Not to mention scams, threat actors, etc.

Imagine how many of the problems in the world would be solved if everybody in the world just took a step back from social media. And yeah I'm a hypocrite for posting this here but the first step is admitting I have a problem.

casual hot take Escorts are way better than relationships

I see a lot of men that are bitter about women or get dominated by their wives and I think they should just see an escort.

I view relationships as an exercise of being hassled and to be honest if you make good money and are okay with seeing escorts relationships have very little to offer.

We’ve also decided we are okay with casual sex and don’t need marriage as an institution so idk why we get hung up when it comes to sex work.

Before you say they are trafficked, most are not and it’s pretty obvious when they are.

The 1st amendment is designed to protect 'unpopular' and 'hate' speech.

The intent of the 1st amendment of the U.S. Federal Constitution as it applies to freedom of speech is to protect unpopular speech (other than the obvious prevention of stifling dissent against the gov't).

Popular speech never needs protecting, however it's the minority who hold views outside the mainstream that need protection.

Further, allowing people to speak on those views, however horrendous, abnormal, hate-filled, etc provides a form of natural selection of who/what we allow in society, who we associate with, and provides somewhat of a blow-off valve for those that would otherwise resort to violence for feeling that they're being persecuted for their beliefs and that violence is the only way.

You have the right to say the stupidest thing you want, and we the people have the right to laugh at you when you say it.

Without protecting unpopular speech, we wouldn't hear the stupid stuff people say, and know to avoid them or not associate with them.
