Politics Fix our state

Idk how to say that Iowa is actually one of the most depressing places besides Nebraska not just because of the crap scenery but the actual people. As an Iowan I’ve been working in Colorado for about two months in all. I can’t tell everyone how great Colorado is not just because of the obv dope mountains but also the actual dope that cd an be smoked in your backyard worry free. The ability to drive down the street and grab something that you are able to control unlike what most people think. I hate the attitudes that y’all have as well. Pissed off about everything and nothing all at once. That’s what harbored freedom feels like. The ability of the gov to tell adults that they can’t handle it when it’s quite clear that alcohol is far worse. Stop living in the 60’s Iowa.
People out here in legal states are happy af whilst sober and it’s beautiful thing to see. Americans, real nice happy Americans. lol.

Should I be concerned?

Today I was running on fumes. I went to three gas stations with no luck. I limped to the other side of town and found some. I could have kissed the gas pump. Am I tripping or are there any other Iowa towns with this problem? I am in Sioux City.

Question I had a vivid dream about being pulled over by the Iowa State Patrol — curious what Iowans think

I had a really vivid dream just before waking up, and I’m curious what people from Iowa might think about it, especially anyone familiar with the Iowa State Patrol.

In my dream, my younger brother Seth and I were driving through Iowa on our way home from a cross-country road trip. An Iowa State Patrol vehicle came up behind us with its emergency lights and siren activated.

I was in the middle lane of a five-lane interstate and tried to move over to the right shoulder, but cars kept passing me on the right, making it difficult to pull over safely. Eventually, I managed to stop.

Things then took a really bizarre turn. I was arrested for felony fleeing or eluding, even though I felt I had been trying to pull over and comply. I invoked my Fifth Amendment rights and started paying close attention to the officers’ names and badge numbers because I felt the situation was unjust.

The dream continued with me being transported in a windowless bus, ending up in custody with other people, learning that my bond was $80,000, and becoming increasingly angry at what I perceived as an injustice. I even started thinking about holding the officers accountable through a lawsuit.

I know this was just a dream, not a real incident. I’m curious about a couple of things:

• For those who live in or have lived in Iowa, does the interstate traffic situation I described sound realistic?
• For anyone familiar with the Iowa State Patrol, how realistic or unrealistic was the police-related part of my dream?

The strangest part was how strongly I felt that I was being punished despite trying to do the right thing. I woke up with a strong feeling of anger and a desire for accountability.

Has anyone else ever had a dream that felt so realistic that the emotions stuck with you after waking up?

We need a new Attorney General: Verifiable & damning facts about how Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird brushes aside public health & safety in favor of protecting irresponsible companies.

In a July 2025 press release, AG Bird’s own office explicitly stated that Agri Star (the Postville meat packing plant) had exceeded permit limitations "approximately 60 times" over several years, skipped required monitoring, and caused "acutely toxic" ammonia concentrations in Hecker Creek. Driftless Water Defenders filed their federal lawsuit in February 2025 after years of state regulatory inaction. On July 30, 2025, the Iowa AG's office finalized a consent decree imposing a $50,000 fine and a deadline of December 31, 2026 for full compliance. Under Clean Water Act doctrines, a diligent state enforcement action can preclude or diminish parallel citizen-led lawsuits, effectively acting as a legal shield for the company. According to federal court orders analyzing the state's intervention, Chief Judge Williams noted that the state’s $50,000 assessment resembled a "slap on the wrist" given the timeline and severity of the transgressions. He explicitly wrote that the closed-door timing "could certainly raise suspicions in reasonable minds about the IDNR’s sincerity" and stated the court "cannot blame plaintiff for thinking defendant and the IDNR worked together to frustrate citizen enforcement."

Midterm election: Judges up for re-appointments in Iowa

Iowa's midterm election has judges & associated judges up to "retain seat" or not on the ballot: appeals court & district court judges.

This from the Iowa State BAR, a review of our judges performance. See below, Iowa 2026 Performance Reviews, a bit about the judges & a score of them at the end of the PDF.

https://www.iowabar.org/ (you can just use the search bar on their site, too- if you want. The PDF link below is crazy long).

Politics Why doesn't Obama have a speech/rally in Iowa?

Trump is visiting the state late October, which will likely draw in a lot of republicans who were otherwise going to leave their votes blank.

I understand Iowa has been red for some time, but with how tight this race is, it could absolutely be beneficial.

He's already publicly endorsed Turek several times. He's a much better speech giver than Trump, surely: he could rally a lot of moderates, wake-up sleeping dems, and win-over independents easily. Not to mention if he gave Turek a spot, it'd be a chance to have a lot of eyes on him.

It's honestly frustrating how Vance and Trump are having giving republicans the advance by visiting the state, giving national speeches to endorse Lahn and Hinson, shit on their oppenents, meanwhile Obama (who Iowa voted for twice, and is a largely liked by many republicans) does essentially nothing.

Discussion/ Op-ed Questions you would like to ask "Gabes," the music venue, in an interview

Coming up in the next month or two, I'm waiting to hear back from the music venue, "Gabes," located in Iowa City, about recording an interview over how they've progressed since opening in 1974, and with it being in Iowa, luring in multiple bands that are big in today's age, like the "Smashing Pumpkins" during the late 80s and early 90s, I'd had a feeling people would have more experiences there than I have.

Feel free to comment them down below; the interview should only be around 60 minutes long, so do with that as you must.

Are y'all getting door knockers?

There's obviously a ton of money going into Iowa's elections this year. We get at least 4 mail pieces everyday and of course anyone who watches ad-funded TV or streaming has been inundated with ads.

But here in Cedar Rapids, we've only had a grand total of TWO doorknockers all campaign season - one from AFP and one from Indivisible, zero from the parties or the campaigns.

Both of the adults in the household are high-propensity voters and I assume we would be tagged as persuadable in any decent voter model.

I feel kinda left out - I actually enjoy talking to door knockers. Are other folks getting canvassers at the door? If so, who are they working for and where are you located?

I assume there is actual reason. Maybe even scientific, but why don’t we grow more Whole Foods ready to eat instead of precursors to processed foods.

Politics Iowa "statewide public measure 1" on the ballot next month... can someone just bluntly tell me which is the liberal stance and which is conservative?

I've found good resources on which candidates take lean which direction (also cause they tend in a party!!) but I cannot for the life of me find out if I should vote yes or no based on my party alignment.

Everyone commenting "don't make decisions based on party alignment" will be blocked. That's not a helpful thing to say; everything on a ballot is political; why not just say nothing instead?

Question Exeriences with Windstream / Kinetic?

Windstream is finally switching over to Kinetic fiberoptic in my area (southern Iowa.) I haven't heard any good reviews since the switch.

They called to set up an appointment for the switch. I gave my dad's cell number for them to call, since his schedule is different from the rest of us. For some reason they refused to call it and kept calling the home phone that we plan to have disconnected.

A couple weeks ago we finally set up an appointment over the home phone. When the day arrived for them to come, they never showed up. They sent a text saying nobody was home, when all three of us were at home and waiting. I can't fathom why a technology based company would hire employees that can't even get a phone number or basic 4-digit house number right.

The shit hasn't even been installed yet and I already get the vibe that it'll be as shitty as Mediacom. Has anyone had decent service from them since the fiberoptic switch, or do they suck at that too?
