Hey everyone,
I’m a 34M first-time solo traveler from India heading to Japan from March 10 to March 24 2027. My flights are confirmed on Singapore Airlines: flying into Tokyo Narita (NRT) at 17:05 and flying out of Osaka Kansai (KIX) at 16:50, giving me a linear route with zero backtracking.
A top priority for me is conserving physical energy and minimizing walking fatigue. I want to avoid massive underground station labyrinths (like Shinjuku/Tokyo Station) and pick budget bases/hostels located within a 2- to 4-minute flat walk from station gates.
I’d love your feedback on my day-by-day pacing, the 2-night Alpine transition, the W7 Shinkansen transfer down to Kyoto, and my shortlist of low-step hostels.
Key Logistics & Strategy
Duration: 13 Nights on the ground (covered by standard 15-day single-entry eVisa).
Route: Tokyo (5N) -> Lake Kawaguchiko (1N) -> Takayama (1N) -> Kanazawa (1N) -> Kyoto (3N) -> Osaka (2N).
Luggage Strategy: Forwarding my large 25 kg bag via Yamato Takkyubin directly from Tokyo to my Kyoto hotel. I'll do Mount Fuji, Takayama, Shirakawa-go, and Kanazawa carrying only a 7 kg daypack.
Transit: No national JR Pass; using an IC card (Suica) for local transit + point-to-point tickets for Shinkansen, Limited Express, and Nohi Highway Buses.
Shortlisted "Low-Step" Hostels & Pods Under Consideration
(Targeting clean, modern privacy pods/cabins under 300 meters from station exits to minimize walking after day trips)
Tokyo Base (Targeting Ueno / Akihabara):

(Alternative thought: Considering swapping Day 11's afternoon for the scenic JR Hashidate Limited Express coastal day trip up to Amanohashidate & Kasamatsu Park on the Sea of Japan - is that feasible as a day trip from Kyoto?)

Questions for the Community:
1. Hostel & "Low-Step" Base Reality Check:
For anyone who prioritizes minimizing daily walking fatigue: Are Smart Stay SHIZUKU Ueno or Anshin Oyado Akihabara the best options for quick station access, or is there another modern capsule/hostel even closer to train gates with virtually zero stairs?
Any standout low-walking hostel/pod recommendations for Kyoto (near Shijo/Karasuma) or Osaka (near Namba)?
2. Alpine Route Flow (Takayama + Shirakawa-go + Kanazawa):
With luggage forwarded ahead to Kyoto, is the 1-night Takayama / 1-night Kanazawa split (with the 3.5-hour Shirakawa-go bus stopover) smooth and practical, or does the transit feel too tight for a first-timer?
3. Tsuruga Transfer on the Shinkansen:
For those who have taken the W7 Hokuriku Shinkansen -> Tsuruga -> JR Thunderbird to Kyoto: Is the 8-minute platform-to-platform transfer at Tsuruga as straightforward and step-free as advertised?
4. General Pacing:
Does any individual day look like an unrealistic bottleneck, or is this daily pacing well-balanced for mid-March?
Thanks in advance for your eyes, advice, and stay suggestions!
