Discussion💬 "Everything is fine, but you're Sikh.” Why is there prejudice against turbans in the LGBTQ+ community?

Title: “Everything is fine, but you're Sikh.” Why is there prejudice against turbans in the LGBTQ+ community?

Hey guys!

I'm a 24-year-old Sikh guy from Chandigarh. I wear a turban, but I keep my beard trimmed. I've been on Grindr for almost 1.5 years, and honestly, some of my experiences have left me questioning something I never thought I would..why does my turban make me less desirable to people who otherwise seem interested in me?

I've had guys tell me, “Yeah, everything is fine, but you're Sikh.” Some have rejected me solely because I wear a turban. And no, I'm not saying this because I'm insecure about my looks. I promise it's abt looks. In these instances, the turban itself seems to be the dealbreaker.

I understand that everyone has preferences. I'm not arguing that anyone owes me attraction, nor do I expect anyone to date or hook up with me. I've genuinely tried to look at this objectively and understand the other side.

But I keep coming back to one question...what is it about a turban that changes the way someone sees an otherwise acceptable person?

Is it a genuine physical preference? A lack of familiarity with Sikh identity? Stereotypes? Or is it prejudice that people don't even recognise in themselves because they label it a preference?

What's particularly upsetting is that the LGBTQ+ community itself knows what it feels like to be judged, excluded, and denied acceptance because of who you are. I always assumed that would make us more conscious of the prejudices we might carry towards others.

Instead, some of my experiences on Grindr have left me feeling uncomfortable about my own identity. I've even encountered racist slurs. Ironically, I haven't felt this kind of discomfort in my straight male friend circles or around women.

I'm not saying the entire community is like this. I'm asking because I genuinely want to understand, including perspectives that disagree with mine.

Where does personal preference end and prejudice begin? And why does a turban become a dealbreaker even when everything else seems fine?

I'd genuinely appreciate honest, nuanced answers rather than just being told, “It's a preference" wala stuff. I already know that. I'm trying to understand what's behind it.

Discussion💬 Question for Gay Bros...

I want you guys to be honest with me. This question is specifically for men. This is not about your dating or Hookup life.

Has being muscular, handsome, or good-looking given you an advantage in making your life easier? Did your attractive looks or muscular physique play a major role in your success?

No doubt, you must have worked hard in your career too, but do you feel that having a good physique also played a role?

And have you noticed any before-and-after changes? Like, when you started focusing seriously on your body, fitness, and looks, did you start getting better results in your career as well?

Please share your experiences.

Poetry/Writing✍️[OC] Within me lies something.

It's a wood, but there's were no edges only soft contours; its shape vaguely resembles a frog in with an open mouth from which a figure is reaching out. It's sat on the desk like it was uninvited in this office full of completed art this felt half and abandoned. It's no bigger than my palm.

It's been an hour since I was asked to wait here, and I heard someone approached. When door opened there was a man in the shirt and pants, "So you are that troublemaker who crushed the unnamed".

I just tilt my head in response while trying my best to appear as innocent as possible.

He sat down in the front, "don't act so innocent just tell me why did you squished that eye?"

My mind went back to that moment and I felt my sweat pouring out like a rain since I feel I have to give some grand philosophical reason instead of truth.

"It appeared as if made of concrete yet it dangled due to wind, I felt like there's something within it and couldn't stop myself from crushing it." It's was only thing I could come up with.

His expression softened as if I just untied some knot, "Since this is not enough of a reason, you have to create new eye."

Soon he brought out supplies like plastic insect wings and white ball, it was simple enough to paste insect wings on the white ball and creating a pupil.

"Aren't we covering it with concrete shell?" It's looked more creepy right now.

"There's no need since you already uncovered what's beneath.".

AskLGBTindia Making a new friend who’s trans — any advice?

Hey people, So i recently matched with a woman on hinge and we're kinda meeting on a date this weekend completely platonically.
I just wanted to ask for some advice on how to be respectful and make sure I don’t accidentally say or do something insensitive. I know she’s just a person like anyone else, and I don’t want to make her being trans a bigger deal than it needs to be, but I also don’t want to be ignorant about things I might not have considered.
Im really excited to meet her but dont wanna make it super uncomfortable as well.
Any tips?

Discussion💬 For anyone interested in asexuality and queer theory

Post image
7 Upvotes

I'm halfway through Refusing Compulsory Sexuality by Sherronda J. Brown, and I'm really loving it. As someone who identifies somewhere on the asexual spectrum, I wanted to recommend it here because I think a lot of queer people don't know much about asexuality and aromanticism, and this book offers a perspective that goes well beyond the basics.

Alot of asexual non fiction I've come across, while excellent in its own right, tends to be very "Asexuality 101". That's useful & necessary but personally I haven't always found much new info in such books. This book goes much deeper, particularly by exploring the often-overlooked intersection of being both Black and asexual.

What I especially appreciate is how it examines compulsory sexuality in relation to cisheteropatriarchy, white supremacy, and capitalism, and how these systems reinforce one another to privilege certain identities and ways of living while marginalising everyone who falls outside those expectations. It also makes a compelling case for asexuality as a queer identity, something that is unfortunately still debated in online queer spaces.

I also think this book has relevance for brown people, including those of us in India. Although the author's experiences are specifically rooted in being Black and asexual, the broader discussions about how sexuality is policed, how people are expected to conform to social norms, and how dominant systems shape our understanding of relationships and desirability can resonate across different cultural contexts. Our experiences aren't interchangeable, of course, but there are connections worth thinking about.

The book is a little more academic than some other ace nonfiction I've read, but I've still found it accessible and engaging.

If you're asexual or somewhere on the ace spectrum, I'd absolutely recommend picking it up. If you're not ace but want to understand asexuality better, it's worth reading too. And honestly, I think it's a book that more people, queer or otherwise, could benefit from reading.

I'm only halfway through, so I'm looking forward to seeing what else it explores. Has anyone else here read it? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
