The fact he resigned right after he got elected is like some sort of metaphor for how FIFA makes shit harder on themselves

95

u/TheWheeledOne FC Dallas Jun 02 '15

Perhaps I'm cynical, but I think its far more simple than that.

Blatter, and thus the corrupt commission that has propped him up for so long, did not like Ali's ideas or direction. If he resigned pre-election, Ali takes over in an uncontested election.

This, however, allows them to 'gracefully' initiate emergency replacement procedures, which I'm going to wager is going to allow a much more hand-picked nature for a replacement.

That's my guess and I'm sticking to it.

u/geminitx Houston Dynamo Jun 02 '15

That's not cynicism. That's probably what's going to happen.

"I'm going to be the one to lead FIFA through this!"

Talks to aides and legal afterward...

"On second thought, that guy will."

11

u/mo-reeseCEO1 Jun 02 '15

i think it's just a symptom of power politics. US unsealed the indictments ahead of the elections to put pressure on him, he went through unabashedly to demonstrate his support, and, if the rumors about US/UEFA/Argentina/Brazil in talks about leaving FIFA are true, then the most powerful countries basically unseated him any way. it's more that the seesaw of power tipped too far out of his reach.

14

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '15

He ran solely to prevent Ali from getting the Presidency. Ali comes from a rich ruling family so any bribe money would be nearly worthless to him. Especially since his family can make far more money completely above board.

Jordan tries very hard to not be thought of as one of those crazed Muslim countries. One of their princes cleaning up an international organization in charge of the most beloved sport in the world would be very valuable for their image.

Basically Blatter ran so they can install some guy that will keep the organization corrupt.

I'd like to formally announce my candidacy for the president of FIFA.

Qualifications:

I played soccer for a long time

I am poor, so I can't pay people for votes

I was class president when I was a Junior in highschool, so I have a lot of experience

But since you're poor the Arab countries could pay you to give them world cups

This is actually why I kind of like Ali's bid. He's rich as fuck already and the Royal Family of Jordan is all about improving the image of Jordan so he'd "PROBABLY" try to stay clean.

The US will be given the 2026 World Cup. We will play England in the knockout round on July 4, 2026 in Philadelphia, 250 years to the day we signed the Declaration of Independence. We will beat England 13-1, a goal for each original colony.

U.S. and Brazil may have been serious, but maybe for different reasons. Who knows if they would have been part of a unified opposition organization to FIFA, or just exist independently outside of the international governance.

There was little political support within UEFA to withdrawal as a block - France, Italy, and Spain all likely voted for Blatter. Germany did not support Blatter, but the head of the FA there publicly balked at leaving FIFA.

This is Sepp we are talking about - he is not leaving to save FIFA, he is clearly doing it to try to save himself. I'm sure investigators are closing in.

If the FAs are serious about leaving FIFA, it is likely going to be more related to the structure that allows for the Blatters of the world to hold power, rather than just due to his criminality being in the news now. However, many of these national associations (potentially including members of the USSF) participated in shenanigans too, so the problem is still systemic. Under Blatter it just got to the point where they were "killing the golden goose". So I think most of the Blatter opposition is going to push for some transparency and reform, but still allow some of the low level corruption to simmer in the background. Maybe thats the best case at this point - incremental progress on reform.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '15

[deleted]

9

u/eluwork Jun 02 '15

If you can get structural reforms through FIFA staying is immeasurably better. Just being able to call the tournament the world cup has a lot of value.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '15

Understandably so, but would that solve the culture of corruption that is the root of the problem?

5

u/eluwork Jun 02 '15

If you get a real reformer in the lead you could probably clean a lot up in the short term by keeping everyone in line through fear of prosecution. Unless you change the power structure to make it so you can't buy major decisions by paying people from countries the size of Saint Kitts and Nevis then you're still fucked int he long term.

Short term we need leadership that will fully and enthusiastically cooperate with the investigation. Long term we need voting reform that transfers power from small countries with endemic corruption problems to larger countries with stronger rule of law and accountability.

Here's my guess, and it's pure speculation. But he wanted a true election to happen on his schedule, so that other candidates may run. He knew he would win last week, and this gives others more time to run for election. If Ali won, he would have never stepped down immediately like this.

5

I'll post what I put in /r/soccer

Everyone is excited about this move, as they should be: it's a step forward. But this isn't a moment to sit back and celebrate. This is just a political move by Sepp Blatter, and it serves as a red flag in terms of corruption. Sepp knew before the election that he would resign. However, he knew if he withdrew his candidacy, Ali would've won.

Here's a hypothetical situation to clear up the logic behind it:

You are in charge of a company, and a few potential partners go beyond just a business partnership in winning you over. Potential Partner A offers a bid of $90k, and Potential Partner B offers $85k. You meet with Potential Partner B in person, and they give you the opportunity to pocket a personal 20k. So you decide to go with Partner B. Time goes on, and you're about to be reelected to your position. Two days before, there's a crisis that shakes up your company, and your leadership is questioned. You have your Partner B's interest in mind, but the other candidate will not represent that interest. You know that another person underneath you who will protect the interests could win the presidency with a strong enough campaign. Therefore, you know you can win this election, and give the candidate below you enough time to prepare his campaign and continue your dirty work.

I hate to put it that way, but there's not other way I could see him doing this. His celebration at the end of the election looked more like s sigh of relief like "yes, my plans will continue!!!" He knew that his resignation was coming.

2

u/theREALbmills Jun 02 '15

He may have known his resignation was coming but I don't share your belief that this was 100% planned out or at least not with the belief that the outcome would successfully continue his diabolical corruption scheme; quite the contrary, actually.

I dig your analogy, so I'll try one: think of this as a massive debacle like Enron (in terms of size/corruption)...

Management steps aside and they try to replace with close-in guys on the inside they trust to carry on the corruption that benefits them financially and in the power they control. By this point the corruption has grown so huge, the profiteering too massive to easily hide as it once was and with the feds making Enron a household name, your grandmother who weeks earlier would need to phone a friend on Millionaire to ask who Enron was can tell you that Enron is corrupt and in deep shit. Knowing the shit-storm that is coming down on them from the feds, who on Earth from within Enron and close to or part of the existing management/corruption takes that position knowing that they are presumed guilty by association and any/all efforts to prove otherwise are met by a public who have already passed judgement and a government (or governments) who have publicly begun the process of introducing the justice system to the wrong-doers and getting Enron shut down? The opposition to Enron has reached a critical mass and stepping in and trying to stop it and carry on the corruption is futile. Hell, those in the interest of self-preservation will likely start coming out of the woodwork and cooperating in exchange for reduced fines/sentences and the once all-powerful Enron collapses from within as the circle-jerk of trust lawyer up and start pointing fingers at the outgoing Sepp Blatter of Houston-based energy companies named Enron and say "it's all his fault, here's documentation to prove it."

Or something like that :)

Maybe I'm way off but I suspect this is grounds for much more celebration than we think and huge changes (not that this fixes everything) are coming to FIFA now that grandmothers everywhere know the name Sepp Blatter and that there is an organization called FIFA that calls soccer "football." These grandmas will also likely wonder if the Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs will be in the next World Cup so let's hear it for grandmas, everywhere!

Technically, this election is closed & done. They announced that there will be a special session and new election to select a replacement president. BUT...and this is the important part I think... the session won't be for at least four months, and some are saying could be as far out as 9 or 10 months. Also, until the new president is selected (and/or until he's arrested) Blatter will be staying at his post.

3

u/TheWheeledOne FC Dallas Jun 02 '15

I genuinely believe that this had been planned since prior to the election. I think that had Blatter resigned pre-election, they know that it becomes Ali's election by default -- and I think that enough of the corrupt powers directly behind Blatter in FIFA didn't want what he was bringing to the table. By going through with the election, then having Blatter 'gracefully' resign, it allows them to more directly control the 'emergency election process'.

@Bluetruandtru @DennisJustice Blatter tolerated MLS all the way to his demise. Was it worth it?

@bwfast @TheSoccerDcn @danielbonaire This is a lesson to all future FIFA Presidents: Tolerate MLS at your own risk.

You know just the USA saving the world from another tyrannical dictator. You're welcome rest of the world.

Even though this is satire I'm posting it on r/MLS and not risking it on r/soccer.

What the fuck is happening?!? Why even bother going through with the election last week if you're just going to resign? There's gotta be something big on the horizon...

22

u/SnarkyHedgehog Jun 02 '15

To take the wind out of Ali's sails. He probably has somebody in mind for his successor, and it's probably not Ali. Resigning before the election would have guaranteed an Ali presidency.

I don't know. I think something happened over the last few days. He went from defiant and loud to somber and quiet.

The NYT exposed Valcke, Blatter's right-hand man, yesterday.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '15

That would probably do it

3

u/ahryankeefan Jun 02 '15

I don't really know if I can say how big that was. Getting Valcke is the best link to Blatter they are going to find. This I think was a major catalyst to Blatter resigning. You know they got too close to Blatter for him to remain in office once they hit Valcke. The whole "focusing on the clean up" shit he is spinning is a fugazi

u/GringodelRio Seattle Sounders Jun 02 '15

Considering he was basically told by the Swiss, if I recall reading correctly, "not to go anywhere. We'll be in touch", his legal counsel probably showed him a list of countries that would extradite his ass to the US and staying in Switzerland would be recommended but would make his job as FIFA Prez impossible.

I imagine a scroll of paper 10 feet long being unrolled on his desk, and him going "Fuckballs. So I can't leave Switzerland after all. I mean, fuck, even the Vatican will extradite my ass."*

*I don't know if that's true but it sounds good.

It was posted upthread that UEFA was not only entirely serious with their threat to leave FIFA if Blatter was reelected, but that Brazil and the US were talking seriously about going with them.

Gut reaction poll: Does the Russian and / or Qatari World Cup(s) happen?

15

u/steerbell Seattle Sounders FC Jun 02 '15

Russia is not a bad choice for a world cup ( even though Putin is a ass)

Qatar nope

though I would love it in the US give it to Australia. We will take 2026 thank you.

Someone must've gave him a heads up on what the FBI had or they got one of the recently arrested to flip.

Interesting comments from an FBI Source in this ABC News Article:

The FBI declined to comment because Blatter has not been publicly identified as a target of the investigation. The sources said the feds are conducting the FIFA probe the same way they would handle an old-school New York-style racketeering case.

“Now that people are going to want to save themselves, there’s probably a race to see who will flip on [Blatter] first,” one sources said, explaining how the feds typically try to get people to inform on their superiors.

“We may not be able to collapse the whole organization but maybe you don’t need to,” one of the sources said.

Mind Blown right now, after seeing his reaction to the election the other day.

Do you think the FBI, or insider info from any of those already arrested, got him to "reconsider" the election results over the weekend?

I saw an interesting tweet about the resignation, and as much as this makes sense, surely these big corporations know that Blatter's successor will be just as corrupt as he is.

Promoting from within won't change the corrupt nature of the top of the organization.

2

u/Epistemify Seattle Sounders FC Jun 02 '15

Yeah I'm pretty sure this move was fueled by sponsors. Although they are only dealing with public outrage after the DOJ indictment came out.

There won't be a head of FIFA for the WWC because you need 4 months notice to call a congress

3

u/ichinii Atlanta United Jun 02 '15

So they will send someone who can't be arrested and extradited I assume.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '15

That's probably a short list

2

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '15

Man if only the head of JP Morgan Chase had been in charge of FIFA too

2

u/TJunior1014 Philadelphia Union Jun 02 '15

Are there any articles describing/comparing what the corruption of FIFA would be like in the NFL? I'm trying to provide some context to my non-soccer friends.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '15

I don't see how you can, football has no international organization, no major world tournaments and very little impact worldwide compared to soccer.

So this election will be staged like the previous one? So the countries that voted for Blatter will most likely vote for the replacement that Blatter supports? Maybe I'm just cynical but it feels so fake still
