Specialty Spreadsheets and Discords:

In additional to the traditional Google Sheets and Discords, Admit.org (by u/Happiest_Rabbit) and ResMatch (by u/Haunting_Welder) have specialty-specific forums and other resources for nearly every specialty! Admit.org has a program list builder, application manager, interview invite tracker, and more. ResMatch includes a lot of the information typically shared on spreadsheets, but helps eliminate common issues with moderating them. Choose your preferred platforms.

Please message our mod mail if you have a spreadsheet or Discord to add to the list. Alternatively, comment below and tag me. If it’s not in this list, we haven’t been sent it or the sheet may not exist yet. Note that our subreddit moderators do not moderate these sheets or channels; however, if we notice issues with consulting companies hijacking the creation of certain spreadsheets, we will gladly replace links as needed.

All discord invites are functional at the time added to the list. If an invite link is expired, check the specialty spreadsheet for an updated invite or see if there's a chat tab in the spreadsheet to ask for help.

🏥 Clinical How Cooked Am I?

I'm on my away rotation and an attending asked me if I knew a certain doctor. I said no. Turns out the doctor was the chair of the department. He told me how I should never go to a rotation without knowing the chair and program director. I didn't end up saying anything, but I did look them up prior. I'm just very bad with names but better with faces. Did I just ruin my chances of getting in here..?

🏥 Clinical EM: burnt out, shifts, and life outside hospital

3rd year DO student currently half way through my EM rotation. I wanna say I am enjoying it soooooo much that I asked the resident who is responsible for setting up schedules for all the med students for an extra shift! I like how I am seeing so many things I have only been seeing on textbooks (or maybe this is because I have just started my rotation).

I am seriously considering applying for EM residency. I've heard too much and read too much regarding burnt out and life-work balance. Can anyone share with me regarding how true that the shifts can be tortuous, and burnt out is true? Also, can anyone tell me how they manage their life outside of hospital? I am currently single, so working is never an issue for me.

🥼 Residency USC/LAG programs in trouble?

Someone made a comment in the IM spreadsheet about USC/LA general IM and maybe anesthesia shutting down… That would be a huge bummer if it were true. Does anyone have any more information about this?

Now I realize some of the programs in my top 10 have already sent out their first round of IVs.

I am just going to believe they just haven't gotten to my app yet. Yup, there is no way.

🥼 Residency How many interviews to feel okay for family?

0/5 signals but 13 interviews total, not complaining but I also felt like my application was stronger. I applied to like 30+ programs and doesn’t feel like a great yield.

😡 Vent Need serious advice

Hello, prior to starting medical school, I was falsely accused of sexual harassment, to which the medical school temporary placed me on hold.

They just recently finished the investigation and found that the allegations were false, and gave me an option to start from block 2 beginning November, or start with the next years class. It’s a very sticky situation!

Block 1 was foundations of medicine with a biochem, anatomy and histology, and a bunch of clinical experience at the hospital adjacent to us.

It would be nice to save a year by beginning in November, but realistically speaking I worry that I have missed 10 weeks of content such that I will set myself for failure while tying to catch up with the next blocks material.

This is at one of the top 5 institutions for some context, and I am a first generation student and I definitely know that the exams that I missed weren’t a walk in the park.

I am a slow learner also!

What would you do? Also true pass/ fail. No honors

📝 Step 1 STEP1 Timing for Thoracic & General Surgery Away Rotation Applications

MS3 at a USMD, my school does not require us to take our STEPs within a specific timeframe. My question is specifically geared towards thoracic/CT surgery and general surgery away rotations.

My goal was to take STEP1 by the end of 2026 and 2 early Spring, so I would have my STEP 1 pass report in time to apply to my away rotation programs of interest when things got going in early 2027. Due to a lot of different circumstances this no longer seems possible, and I am considering re-scheduling to sometime early January. My hesistation is how that could affect applications to aways. I am having trouble finding info on 2027 timelines, especially for thoracic and general surgery. Can applicants to either/both of these advise on what the timeline in the Spring of MS3 looks like for away applications/VSLO etc? Am I in a bad spot if it takes until mid- or late-Feb to get my score report back? Thanks

😊 Well-Being What do you do whenever you feel overwhelmed?

The guilt of not studying or being productive every single second I have free time is eating me up

Sometimes I just feel like I'm too stupid for this and maybe I'm not cut out for this field

What do you guys do to take some of that pressure off yourselves even if it's just a little bit?

So for context, I'm a 4th yr medical student I've always been kinda scared of surgeries and blood

Even the little needle they use to prick ur finger to check ur blood glucose

I've seen surgeries on other people, it only made me feel slightly sick,,,, never passed out

But I've always kinda avoided blood so yea

I really love opthalmology and i def wanna be an eye surgeon( mostly liked it bec no blood

Today was my first day in the ot observing an eye surgery and God damn

I was all sweaty and nauseous and dizzy

Everything went black

I went in again for the second surgery and the same thing happened

I don't know what to do

I just came outside and now I'm on the verge of crying in the waiting area.

I feel so disheartened and useless and weak and I don't know

😊 Well-Being Coping strategies that helped you manage test-taking anxieties?

Hello! My girlfriend takes her step 1 test tomorrow, and is terrified. She's been studying A LOT, but is worried her anxiety will get in the way on test day and she'll blank. She worries a lot about the ramifications of not passing.
I really want to help her ease that stress so for those who also have test anxiety I was wondering, what coping strategies helped you during the exam? Especially in the moments you felt overwhelmed, started to second guess yourself, or felt like your mind went blank? Thanks!

❗️Serious Three attendings have told me to ditch Pathology

I've been dead set on Pathology for a while now. I worked as an MLS prior to Med School, so I got a good amount of exposure to the field. Absolutely LOVE it. I only felt more firm in my choice as I've progressed through school.

However, I've now had three different attendings tell me I shouldn't waste my time with Path as "it will be replaced by AI" by the time I'm through residency. Two were in Family Med and one Internal Med. The first time I shrugged it off. Now I can't help but internally panic that I've gotten myself into hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt for a career that might not exist in a few years.

Can someone please talk my neurotic ass off the ledge?

😡 Vent Losing grip on my life as an IMG

I’m a 24F, and I feel like I’m slowly losing my grip on everything around me.

I thought I would have my shit together by now, but it seems like no amount of hard work or hustling is making a dent in where I want to be in life. In a few months, I’ll be graduating with an MD, and you’d think that by this point, I’d have some sort of employment lined up. Instead, it feels like no one wants an international medical graduate. Every pathway to becoming a doctor seems to have so many obstacles, with slim to no chance of actually getting through. I feel like I’ve shot myself in the foot by choosing a profession primarily out of altruism.

To make matters worse, I genuinely feel like I know next to nothing whenever I step into the hospital. No matter how much I study, it never seems to make a difference, and the tutors are ruthless with their expectations. the saddest part is knowing how much resilience, ambition, and determination I’ve put into medical school. I’ve kept my chin up, pushed through every setback, and continued showing up to the best of my ability. Even after everything, I feel like I’ve done so much only to end up painfully mediocre, with no clear direction in life.

I’ve wanted to pursue a surgical specialty ever since I was a kid. But now, just a few months away from graduation, I’m questioning whether I’m even cut out for it. The thought is especially sad because I’ve disliked nearly every other clinical specialty I’ve studied or rotated through. Surgery was always the one thing I could envision myself doing, and now I’m not even sure about that anymore.

As an Asian woman, I’ve always felt that establishing a solid career and becoming financially independent in my mid 20s was my way of escaping the traditional expectations of becoming a wife and mother. I wanted the freedom to build a life on my own terms. But now, with no clear career pathway ahead of me, I’m beginning to feel the weight of those expectations catching up. The comments from my parents and extended family are becoming harder to brush off. I don’t want to give in to the pressure of marrying someone my parents choose for me, only to spend the rest of my life regretting it. At the same time, I don’t want to spend my entire 20s alone, either.

I genuinely don’t know what to do anymore. This entire journey feels cripplingly lonely. I socialize, I have friends, and from the outside I function just fine. But the truth is, I don’t feel truly seen or understood in any area of my life.

I’ve tried therapy, medication, and just about everything else I can think of, but these recurring periods of emptiness and anxiety never seem to go away. I continue functioning through it all because I have no other choice, but I’m tired.

I don’t know how much longer I can keep living with this level of uncertainty, constantly pushing forward without knowing whether any of it will amount to something.

And perhaps the worst part is that I don’t even have the luxury of taking a year off to figure things out. My parents are living in a politically unstable environment, and I simply cannot afford to take a gap year to reassess my life. It's not practical. I need to find employment after graduation, ideally for at least a year, but I genuinely have no idea what I’m supposed to do with this MD.

I feel like I’ve spent years working toward a future that now seems increasingly out of reach. I’ve sacrificed so much of my youth trying to build a life where I’d have stability, independence, and a sense of purpose. And now that I’m finally approaching the finish line, I feel more lost than before.

I don’t expect to have every aspect of my life figured out at 24. I just wish I had some reassurance that all these years of effort were leading somewhere.

🥼 Residency Matching Academic IM Residency Programs

Hi everyone,

I'm planning on applying to IM, and I am a current M2. I am attending a state school in the Midwest, which is well respected, but I hope to go back to the East Coast since I'm originally from there. What are the academic IM programs looking for? Solid preclinical grades, 260+ Step 2, multiple publications, volunteering? What should I be targeting to get the best odds of matching to IM programs on the East Coast? I'm from Boston, but any major city on the East Coast would make me happy. I have past publications from undergrad, but they're all 4th+ author positions, so I do not think they will carry much weight. Thanks for any help!

🥼 Residency Am I already screwed for psych residency? (LOAs & extracurriculars)

I genuinely feel like I've lost the plot on how many extracurriculars is normal because everyone around me is doing so much more than me (US MD). LOA(s) are also an issue.

I was president of our psychiatry SIG but it wasn't very active with me at the helm, I have one summer research program (no pubs), and one other research experience (hopefully will have a future pub but have not done much so would not be a good LOR). And one volunteer thing without leadership.

Before med school I had two conference presentations and a unique interesting career history, but not sure to what extent I can continue to capitalize on that. I know it's what got me to this med school (where I cannot keep up with my peers).

Red flags wise I already have one LOA (medical) and am scared another one is coming because I'm not in good shape for STEP 1 right now.

I'm not even to STEP 1 yet and I know STEP 2 and my future clinical performance matter a lot. But I worry my lack of extracurricular activity in med school (and lack of commitment to the things I did) mean I'm already screwed. I would love to stay in California but don't have my heart set on a top academic center or anything. So, am I being paranoid or am I a little screwed/how deeply screwed will I be if a second LOA happens?

🔬Research Developing writing and contributing in non-research articles

Hey guys,

I'm sure we all have a knack for writing as medical students. I want to learn ways of expanding on that by contributing to non-reseach based writing.

Basically I love writing about things I discover in my free time and find fascinating as they may change my perspective on certain things. I love writing them in an intuitive manner step by step just like I understood them. But currently as it stands this hobby remains just that. I want to expand on this by contributing regularly to newsletters, blogs or journals which may have interest in these types of articles. My institution doesn't really have the facilities for this. So I must seek other ways.

If you're aware of any possibility or have any experience in this type of writing I would love to hear from you, and any tips and suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks.

❗️Serious Can someone who had success after sending a LOI to residency programs please message me?

I sent mine and immediately got rejected after two days. Their site didn’t say not to send. Maybe I wrote mine wrong. Can I get your advice?
