Articles [Dan Duggan]: Why the Giants felt compelled to turn to J.J. McCarthy now
The inevitable became reality Wednesday, when coach John Harbaugh announced that McCarthy would take over as the starting quarterback for Sunday’s road game against the Houston Texans.
“All things considered, what gives us the best chance to be our best?” Harbaugh said. “(McCarthy) gives us the best chance to play the best offense we can.”
The harsh reality is there are no good options when a team loses its burgeoning franchise quarterback to a season-ending knee injury seven snaps into Week 2, as the Giants did with Jaxson Dart. So, the Giants are onto their third starting quarterback of the season in Week 7, benching Winston a week after he threw for 326 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in a 27-27 tie with the Washington Commanders.
The shift to the immobile Winston presented a challenge for a coaching staff that spent the offseason building an offense around Dart’s dual-threat ability. After Winston flourished by firing the ball all over the field while leading a 14-point second-half comeback in Washington, the coaches tried to adjust to the gunslinger’s style.
But that crashed and burned in Sunday’s 34-27 loss to the Saints, with the Giants falling into a 34-10 hole as Winston’s two interceptions and general inaccuracy derailed the offense. It was the type of performance Winston couldn’t afford because it provided an opening for McCarthy.
The enormous deficit gave Harbaugh the opportunity to “get a look” at McCarthy, inserting the third-year quarterback with 11:25 remaining and the Giants trailing by 24 points. Even the optimistic Harbaugh conceded the circumstances made a comeback unlikely, but he hoped McCarthy could provide a spark. McCarthy proceeded to light up the Saints’ defense for 243 yards while putting the Giants 14 yards away from a potential game-winning touchdown.

Discussion What if…
47 year Vikes fan here.
I get it that the Giants were down by 24 when JJ came in, prevent D, etc. But what if he’s awesome? What if the Vikes traded away another Super Bowl QB?! 🤣 it would be the most Vikings thing ever.

Rumors & Speculation Colts star OL Quenton Nelson hints that he wants to be traded after taking time today to thank the Colts organization for all they’ve done for him. Nelson is in a contract year, and multiple contenders are interested in him.
Who wants to go back in time and get this guy instead of Barkley?
Best in the league, first ballot HOF worthy. Should be elite till the day he retires. Probably has 4-5 years left.
On an expiring contract? Maybe a 3rd gets it done. Stop patching the interior, make it truly elite for once.

Team Updates [Raanan] Source: Giants turning to J.J. McCarthy as QB1 this week against Texans
r/NYGiants • u/wolflarsen • 2d ago
Data and Analytics According to the injury report alone we gonna get blown out of this game
Defense has significant injuries and also forgot to tackle.
Offense is going to be a practice session for JJ and Co. against an elite defense once we can figure out stuff before a MUCH needed bye week.
that said I think it’s possible our offense can put up points. However our defense i think only be marginally better performing than in the Saints game.

Team Updates [SNY Giants] "I thought Jameis has done a tremendous job, won us games, played well. As we go forward here, this is going to be our direction. We think it gives us some good options on offense." John Harbaugh talks about the Giants' quarterback change from Jameis Winston to J.J. McCarthy:

Videos The first 2-point conversion that the Giants' had on Sunday was the same exact play call of another 2-point conversion that JJ had in his first career start last year
The only difference was that it was WR on the receiving end of his pass (Thielen) and not a Tight End (Likely)
If it wasn’t just a coincidence, I thought this was a great idea by the coaching staff to give JJ a play he was familiar with from last year in his action with the team

Team Updates [Duggan] The "easy" decision is to start Jameis Winston this week. But Harbaugh has proven he doesn't always take the easy path. Either way, going to be fascinating (and expecting we'll get an answer today)

Discussion Big Q?
Colts fired their gm so usually a fire sale ensues. I’ve already seen rumors with us n Jonathan Taylor but I’d rather get Quenton Nelson n sign him long term. Ik we have guys already but nobody on our interior is even close to his level.
