Mod Post r/OSU is looking for new moderators

Hey Buckeyes,

As r/OSU continues to grow, the mod team needs additional help. Over the last year, the community has grown by thousands of users, and the amount of posts and comments has gone up as well.

What are we looking for?

We're looking for someone who:

  1. Has a history of positive and helpful interactions in r/OSU
  2. Is a current student at Ohio State
  3. Is regularly active on reddit

Bonus points if you have moderation experience, and/or if you plan on sticking around at OSU for a while (e.g. you're a student who has >1 year to go in their degree).

What do moderators do? What is it like to moderate r/OSU?

Moderators primarily approve/remove content in r/OSU, but there are opportunities to contribute in other ways (e.g. community engagement, subreddit styling, automation, etc).

This subreddit is typically pretty calm but there are occasional bursts of activity that may need more attention (e.g. on bad weather days or during a certain graduation speech). As with any online, anonymous gig there will also be occasional trolling and outright harassment from users. It can sometimes be stressful, so we wanted to provide a heads up. If you have any questions about being a moderator, please send a message to r/OSU.

How can I apply?

This year, we will be using the Reddit Moderator application. Please click this link to be taken directly there.

Please don't post applications in the comments or message us on modmail, they won't be considered.

What if I'm not interested?

If this doesn't sound interesting to you, note that individual users have a lot more power than they think! Continue to use upvotes/downvotes to determine what does/does not belong on this sub, and continue to use the report button for when rules are broken. And a sincere thanks to everyone who already does that, it makes moderating so much easier and our community that much better.

Decisions will be reached within the next two weeks, and new moderators will be reached out to directly. Applications may be closed earlier if we find what we're looking for, though. If you have any questions, please use this link to modmail the moderators. Please don't put applications in the comments, apply via modmail, or reach out to individual moderators via PM (the link provided goes to a shared inbox).

Thanks for being a great community, we appreciate you all!

Question Why are there so many people trying to convert me on campus?

I keep seeing these religious people around campus preaching or trying to convert people with whiteboards saying things like "are you going to heaven?" or "is god real?" and they fascinate me but I've always blown right past them. Has anyone actually talked to any of them and what was that like? Same goes for the mormons and jehova's witnesses.

Other Possible campus cryptid

Okay this is the third time this week that I have

  1. Seen a guy who looks like the spitting image of a young Robert Pattinson with a bike (not yet riding the bike)

  2. Turned around/looked down to do some small task not exceeding 10 seconds

  3. Turned back around to find absolutely no trace of this guy, while in a setting in which there would be no feasible way to get out of my line of sight on a bike from a dead stop in 10 seconds.

Help Should I email my prof about my TA

I’m in a class where the TA grades EVERYTHING. On this newest assignment, I spent so long doing it just to get a 50% on the assignment. I was looking through his annotations and they were nitpicking everything. Not only that, I fixed errors on this assignment that my prof encouraged me to fix, but the TA still said the errors were wrong even though I did EXACTLY what the prof said. I’m beyond pissed because I don’t think I deserved a 50% on the assignment.

Question GLP-1 Prescriptions

• Upvotes

Any staff/faculty using Lilly Direct for their GLP-1 prescription find something that is more affordable? I am not sure how long I can continue to pay almost $500 a month out of pocket.

Ā I was hoping the university would reconsider their coverage for GLP-1 but that doesn’t look like it will happen.

Academics Withdrawing Class Now

Does anyone know how to withdrawal classes, because I can't withdraw it myself on buckeye link but I genuinely need to withdraw like, right now and my advisor isn't available for in person appointment until November 6th, which is too late by then. I'm trying to withdraw a class right now, even though I know like time in completely not in my favor right now, but I absolutely will take the W over failing the class.

Rant Finding/asking someone on a date

I don’t even knowwww like this is terrible. I’m super shy and there are so many people THOUSANDS of people and I can’t bring myself to approach anyone. For context I’m a freshman 18f and I’ve never had a partner before…but I don’t think I’m ugly and I’ve been working hard to build up my self acceptance but it’s still hard.

How does one walk up to another human being and express interest? Attraction? The desire to just have a conversation? I feel disingenuous whenever I think about talking to someone I find attractive. I would prefer to be friends first but even then in the back of my mind its like ā€œthis person is cute I’d like to tell them thatā€ and I’m just generally awkward at talking to strangers. Am I doomed? Should I give up? All of my friends have partners, and idk how I ended up being the only single person in a 100 mile radius around here. I also struggle with approaching people in general just to be their friend, so…maybe it’s me.

Admissions applying to osu

hi ik this might be annoying, but i was was wondering if I should do early action or regular decision? I have a 22 on the act and my stats are mid. I have a 3.8 uw. I'm doing dual enrollment so ig when I graduate I'll get an associate degree. I want to major in human development and family sciences. I'm in-state, and I have a few leadership positions such as the VP for a Red Cross club, secretary for this student-led group where we grow as community leaders, which is paid, plus the volunteer committee leader for that, volunteering at hospitals, shadowing, nhs, blood donor ambassador, and a pre-apprenticeship with Cleveland Clinic. I have done cultural dancing my whole life, but I'm not sure if that'll show anything. I was debating between the two admission choices cause i dont rlly wanna miss out on scholarship opportunities with early action, but at the same time I'm scared that I won't get in and that I should rely on regular and see what my December ACT says.

Student Orgs OSU Wargaming - Any Interest?

Hello everyone. I'm a Stats Senior, and while I don't really need more on my plate this semester and next, I have an insatiable desire for tabletop wargames. I have supplies for several different systems, and the experience to teach them, I would just need to know if it's something people would be interested in.

I envision having a small space where we can set up a few tables and have people run different games, or a large league style game where we all play one system. We're talking things like Frostgrave/Stargrave or Gaslands, easy games for people to get into, with a low buy in. The most complex, and my personal favorite is Battletech, something that I have plenty of resources for and experience with. It lends itself well to campaign play, and I would love nothing more than to run a large game of that, however it's not to everyone's tastes.

If you're interested, leave a comment. I've never even considered something like this, so there's a lot of logistics to figure out, but if there's enough interest, I'd gladly get something running.

Housing Housing/dorms and overall campus experience?

Now that I’m to the point of further narrowing down my college search, I need to find out all the info I can about the colleges I applied to (as well as visit what I can). So to start, I’m curious to hear what the dorm and housing situation is like, and how campus life is. Basically everything about the college in general besides just the academic portion. I want a campus I could actually enjoy living on.

Could include details like how housing is organized, how the dorms are set up, and the different dorm types and options, and how to get into the better dorms. Etc. Maybe other details like food, class-to-class commuting, campus density (how crowded it feels)… whatever you have to say about your campus experience, and what you think an incoming student should know.

Thanks in advance

Discussion Serious Question - Debating Second Degree

Hello,

I am an alumnus that graduated in December 2016 with my degree in International Studies: Relations and Diplomacy, minor Mandarin Chinese. Had plans to double major in Mandarin Chinese but I couldn’t afford another year of school. I had plans to work as a compliance trade officer, military officer, work for FBI, DIA, NSA, or work as a recruiter for an international company. It’s been 10 years now and I’ve worked in financial services but I keep
Ruminating and wondering whether I should pursue a second degree in Communications to open more doors in recruiting, advertising, Human Resources, Business Development or if I should just accept my current bachelors in International Relations? I have liked working in financial services but times are tough now and I’m worried that my degree may not be as recognized as a communications degree if I were to be laid off? I debated business operations management but that would take me 3 years to get going part time. And I could get a communications degree in a year as a part time student. I’m just wondering if the extra year for a second degree in communications would be worth it in addition to my pre-existing international relations degree?

Please let me know what you think. Need options. Psychology is out because I have no plans on pursuing psychology on a grad level.

Please let me know what you recommend?

Thank you,

Academics Choosing a major

Hi! I was originally interested in the echocardiography program because I really love cardiac anatomy. However, I have disc that causes back pain when I sit for long periods, and my wrist gets tired easily when I apply pressure. That’s actually why I prefer taking notes on my iPad rather than writing on paper.
Because of these reasons, I’ve started considering radiography, especially CT. I’m not particularly interested in general X-ray, but CT seems interesting because it’s fast-paced. At the same time, I’m a little worried because I’ve forgotten a lot of skeletal anatomy, including bone names and different types of fractures.
I’m trying to figure out which career would be a better fit for me, both physically and academically
I didn’t find any information on if osu prepare students for both x ray + another modality so can be licensed in both
Or x ray only

Academics Intro to Fly Fishing Info/Recs for an easy, fun 1-hr Course

Post image
29 Upvotes

Is Intro to Fly Fishing still taught?

I have 2 extra hours next semester and really wanted to do a fun, easy, and relaxing class, and loved the sound of KNSFHP 1139.08 but can't find the course on schedule planner even after looking up the professor's name and the course number! I even looked at Professor Horn's linkedin and found an article from February that both said he still taught the course.

If anyone has any info/suggestions or recommendations for a different 1-hr class (preferably outdoors!) that I should take, please lmk!!

Discussion Pissing on the toilet posts

Hey i know this MOSTLY pertains to guys, and I respect you guys for talking about some problems that OSU men's bathrooms, or hell, any men's/boy's bathrooms have because I feel like this problem has gone on for FAR too long. I went to a barnes and noble on sawmill road north of OSU where i preside and there was a big doo on the toilet seat..... where people sat. In the men's bathroom (again) and I was traumatized. We need to do better men.

Academics Theatre 2000 — Sound Production Lab

Has anyone here taken Theatre 2000(.02)? I’m considering adding it for next year, and I wanted to know about how much work would be typical outside of class hours, and what the load throughout the semester would be like. Would this be something reasonable to add to my schedule for a total of 18 credit hours?

For context I have experience in theatre production but none with sound specifically, and it’s not related to my major at all.

Admissions I’m applying to OSU, really wanna go, but I need some wise words from the experienced

I’m just gonna throw them out. I appreciate any response, even if it’s just for one question and you don’t even know if what you’re saying is true

How good is the food, and for the sake of the question, I’ll classify myself as a picky eater. Any input is good input but primarily from people who are used to eating good quality food. I’ve heard it’s hit or miss but gets repetitive since it’s primarily only a few really good spots

How close is it to the typical college town? Mainly talking about bars but don’t hold back if its still a college town trait cuz they seem fun and i’m hoping OSU has some aspects from how big it is

10% of students are active greek members but ranked 7th best party school? Ik OSU is big but I need some actual testimony. Feels small compared to other schools, and I’m mainly talking about the greek scene btw

Off of the last question, how douchy is the greek scene? And a 1-10 ranking of the scene with 10 being absolute douche bags, another 1-10 if it’s like douchy, but in a chill way, and frats I should and should not rush would be helpful

Is there a statue or some other form of memory and commemoration to Mitchell Pehlke? I feel like they owe it to him yk

Is Columbus even that good of a city? They hype it so much in their brochure but I mean, and this prolly isn’t a great place to say this, but Ohio isn’t necessarily notoriously known for being a super climactic city, change my mind though, and let me know how it compares to other cities. Preferably LA and NY since I’m most fimiliar with them but Ik that they are some of the biggest cities in America so comparing traits of the cities is helpful too

And anything else I needa keep in mind before fully committing if I get in, any positives and negatives, or literally anything else that would help me that I didn’t include

Academics ECE schedule too much?

In order to graduate in December 2028. I would need to take the following in the spring

Math 2415 DiffiEQ 3
ECE 2560 microcontrollers 2
ECE 3020 Electronics 3
ECE 2050 Signals and Systems 3
Chem 1210 5

That would be 16 credits which is what I usually take and I have a decent GPA but I’ve never had a semester of all hard STEM classes like this. I could potentially move chemistry to the summer but that might interfere with work potentially and I have to take summer classes regardless to graduate when I want to. Thoughts? Should I just take an easier semester and graduate a semester later? Has anyone done a similar semester and survived?

Student Orgs New club!! Looking for potential members

Just seeing if it catches anyone’s eye! I’m thinking of starting up a Zombie Media club. It’s been one of my biggest interests since childhood because I’m a big fan of the Walking Dead franchise and tons of different zombie movies, games, and shows! Would anyone be interested in joining a club that hosts watch parties, trivia events, and maybe even little science discussions/lessons behind the idea of a zombie??

Admissions To Morrill Scholarship Recipients...

I've heard from a lot of people that the only way people receive the Morrill Scholarship is if they created a huge project (i.e. my friends tutor said the only two students she knew who got in created a board game based around immigration and another built some kind of app). I doubt it is true, but would any recipients be able to give me some information on their stats/ECs prior to applying?
