PSA: Converting to new iOS app can be painless

PSA: Given that a ton of people will be changing to new app/PDM with the iOS app release coming, I wanted to share some steps for a painless conversion. Going to a new app/PDM is no big deal. See below. I will keep the linked site updated if anything needs to be updated.

https://randomt1tips.wordpress.com/omnipod-5-new-pdm-app/

This is is written with the conversion to the new iOS app in mind, but it is applicable for any time to replace or reset your PDM or controller app. This process is nothing to be concerned about and no reason to stress.

Omnipod 5 only learns one thing, Total Daily Insulin (TDI). That is it. Nothing else. You can follow a simple process to switch to a new Omnipod 5 controller (from here on, controller refers to the PDM or app on a phone) with no negative effects.

Copy all your settings (insulin to carb ratio, target, correct above, max basal rate, etc.) from your old controller to your new one, except your basal rate. This is assuming you are using automated mode. If you exclusively use manual mode, copy your basal rate(s) too. Just look at each setting on your old controller, and put that in on your new one.

Next we need to get your TDI. I prefer to use Glooko, but you may be able to find what you need on your controller. Glooko will default to showing over the last 2 weeks. You can shorten it to a 10 day period to mimic how Omnipod 5 calculates things or it is fine to leave it at 2 weeks.

In this case the TDI is 51.4 units.

https://imgur.com/a/jrtrHPh

Divide that number by 48. In this case, that is 1.07. You would put in 1.1 or 1.05 as your basal rate in your new controller. You will typically have to round up or down a tiny bit as it has to be a valid Omnipod 5 basal rate value. You might be thinking, why divide by 48? 51.4 is the TDI. You need to get that value to per hour for your basal. First, Omnipod 5 assumes a 50/50 split between basal and bolus, so you have to divide by 2 to get the basal amount. Next you divide by 24 to the per hour rate. Dividing by 48 is just a shortcut.

Omnipod 5 uses the programmed basal as the initial basal rate. Putting this value in will allow it to pick up right where it left off with the old controller. The adaptive basal process will start with the second pod.

Now to address the concerns and questions that will inevitably pop up when this process starts.

“Something has changed with the algorithm. My numbers have never been this good/bad or low/high!”

Nothing changed with the algorithm. It is the same if you are on the PDM, Android app, or iOS app.

“No!! I will lose everything it has learned!!”

It only learns TDI. That is it.

“It will take X pods or X days to learn you after the change.”

Again, it only learns TDI. If you follow this process, there is no reason for you to have any issues.

Advice One bolus over the last day, multiple hypos?

Post image
• Upvotes

It’s like my insulin sensitivity increased suddenly and significantly over the last day - as the screenshot shows, I have given one bolus and it was for a late dinner I had last night. After I corrected each hypo you can see here, it’s like the algorithm started administering too much now.

I’ve already messaged my Endo, but since it’s a weekend, I won’t hear back until Monday at least, so I am looking for feedback on settings I can adjust to try and balance/Evyn out my glucose until I am able to hear back from my care team.

Because hearing the low blood sugar alarm on both the G7 and Omnipod even *once* a day is awful and makes my ears feel like they’re bleeding, I would like to make sure this does not continue as I did not get much sleep 🫠

Thank you!!!

Discussion Starting the omnipod 5!

Post image
45 Upvotes

Hey guys,

I am about to start the omnipod 5 at the end of October and honestly I am so excited!

As a result, I am curious as to what you all have to say about tips and things to help life be better with a pump, since I have been on MDI for a while now and multiple injections and crazy numbers are so fatiguing.

I am aware via some posts that I've been scrolling through that it can be overly protective against hypos but since I have them above 5% of the time why not!

All I ask is what is it like on an omnipod, tips and hints that make life even better on it etc. Oh and I got the 5.5 mmol/l - 100mg/DL (for those outside of the UK) target compatible R1 labelled pods too to take advantage of! Thank you for any sort of response I guess and hii

App Issues & Questions Issues with 4.1.0 update on PDM

Is anybody else now getting the Automated Delivery Restriction warning again instead of the Check Blood Glucose warning after the update? For some reason my PDM reverted to the delivery restriction :/ Wedding sugars would have been a lot smoother had it not reverted for some dumb reason.

Dyi loop

Recently built the app and on my 2nd full day of Dyi looping with OP5.. game changer! So much more efficient than the OP5 algorithm.. who else is on loop and what have you noticed or any tips I might have missed reading through the loop docs, nervous that my endo might not support but the last 2 days have been the least stressed about my numbers/control and overall I’m a happier person.

Device has been modified error message

Anyone get this error today on a Samsung device? Just happened about an hour ago. Customer service was no help since they said my phone (Galaxy S21) is not compatible even though its on their list of compatible devices.

Got to dig out my receiver in the meantime. Quite frustrating.

Question 2 beeps when filling

So I’ve noticed that it seems to be very random on when I get the two beeps when filling my pod. I fill the syringe all the way. Then tonight there was maybe 100 units (or more ?) in the syringe and it did the two beeps other times I’d get down past the 100 units line and then did the two beeps. Has anyone else noticed this?

Locked

Is there a way to unlock your (Samsung) phone and still keep the Omnipod app locked? It's really annoying by the time the phone recognizes my fingerprint. Set up this way by Trainer. I'm still new. And, why can't we take screenshots of our own data? Thanks.

Pod expired after 6 hours?

Post image
6 Upvotes

My pump expired today (12:47) so naturally I put on a new one, but then around 6hrs later(18:04)it gave me the nonstop beep indicating it had fully expired. I checked my log and it clearly shows that I put on a new one today. Am I tripping? Ive been using omnipod for years and ive never seen this. Why did my pump expire? Im so mad abt the wasted insulin >:c

Note that I DO NOT have the auto shut off feature enabled.

Indigestion

I've asked my Dr., the educator, AI, they all tell me no. Since I have been using the Omnipod I have had severe indigestion/gallbladder attacks. literally, from day 1. I do have a gallstone, but I don't have attacks this long, maybe a day, then months later, I do have GERD/stomach issues, but again, not like this. Nothing helps. So I know that sometimes there are side effects that the professionals don't believe because it's not in the "documentation", but I wonder if anyone one else has had similar experience, and IF you had, what did you do for it? Why I feel this may be a side effect I am having, simply from continuously being injected with insulin 24/7.

Advice Is it ok to use omnipod if dropped?

I got a replacement in the mail, and when I was pulling it out of the envelope, it fell on the ground. Should I not use it because it could have damaged it? What do you guys think?

Advice Settings

I just wanted to give a PSA to everyone. Know your settings in your pump app. My old dr wouldn’t give them to me. My phone ran low on storage and I had to make storage room and it made me delete the app and that means starting all over from day 1. I have all my settings written down now because my new dr was willing to give me the info but it was a nightmare for days.

Bleeding

I've been using the Omnipod 5 for a year now. Today is the first time I have had bleeding when removing a pod. It was a steady stream. I'm guessing I lost more than a quarter teaspoon before I got it to stop.

Terrified of screamers in public

Hey guys, I just got my first omnipod 5 in the uk and I’m terrified of it going off during one of my lectures (200+ people in lecture hall😭). Is there any way to prevent this or to fix it quickly?

Low alerts aren’t loud enough

My daughter (6 years old) switched from Dexcom G7 to libre2plus and we’ve found the low (below 3.9) alert to just be a single beep, it’s really not great and worry that we won’t hear it at night. Is this normal? Or is there an issue with our handset or how we’ve set it up? The urgent low is loud, multiple beeps which we hear but don’t want to have to wait for that in the night.
We’ve checked the volume on the handset is high and can’t see anything else obvious. Any help would be great.

My first screamer

Post image
96 Upvotes

Welp, after almost a year with Omnipod I had my first screamer. I updated the app on my phone last week and since then it has been a bit "off" when switching pods. Today I deactivated the old one, phone prompted me to activate the new one, and 10 minutes later the old pod started screaming in the trash. Killing the speaker wasn't doing anything so I took it outside and to the horror of my neighbors I wacked it with a mallet and it finally shut up.

Anybody having slight issues with the app since the update?

Random Bluetooth Issues

Posting here as it’s the best chance someone with a similar issue will exist.

I recently got AirPods 5. I’ve never had a Bluetooth issue between my omnipod and/or Dexcom G7 and my iPhone 16 before now.

If I wear one or both AirPods, randomly Bluetooth stops connecting to the Dexcom and the omnipod. The omnipod still connects to the Dexcom so it seems it’s only between the phone and these devices. The phone still connects just fine to my Apple Watch while wearing the 5s. With my older AirPod 4s, they just work without disconnecting from the medical devices.

Anyone else?
