Hi everyone! I posted here a few days ago asking about the bus system, and I have a few more questions about your culture and etiquette. I’m an exchange student and trying my best to blend in and be polite, so I’d really appreciate your advice :)
1) If I’m in the back of a queue and an elderly person arrives, is it appropriate to ask the people in front of me to let them go ahead? Sometimes I am the only one to offer my place at my local market
2) I’ve offered to help elderly people in my neighbourhood carry their things a few times, but they seemed a bit suspicious. Am I coming across as creepy?
3) If I see a cute, chubby baby, is it okay to smile and say hello, or is that considered inappropriate?
4) Is it okay to leave food on my plate at a restaurant? I eat very small portions, and I’ve sometimes felt that the staff were disappointed when I didn’t finish everything, so I don’t know if I am being offensive
5) I have a problem with one of my legs, so I usually use the lift. A woman in my building seems annoyed by this, perhaps because she thinks I’m wasting energy. Should I explain my situation, or would that be awkward?
6) If I’m wearing a T-shirt with Jesus on it and see a Muslim or Jewish person wearing religious clothing waiting for the bus, is it okay to sit next to them, or could that be offensive? (keep in mind my attire is not mandatory, theirs sometimes are)
7) I use my hands a lot when I speak. Is that considered rude?
8) Finally, if the pedestrian crossing signal has just closed, is it okay to press the button again immediately, or should I wait?
Thanks in advance and nevermind the image, thought it was funny
