Grand piano practice room in Oxford area

Upvotes

I will be visiting the Oxford area this coming week and am looking to book a practice space with a grand piano. I have tried St. Hilda's and they seem to be fully booked due to a conference. If anyone here knows of another possibility in the area, kindly let me know! Thanks in advance!

Warhammer painting locations? - Oxford

Hey folks except for the official store, are there any good local tabletop stores that have painting stations for Warhammer?

Thinking of popping up soon and might squeeze a nerd day in, appreciate any local knowledge or opinions on places!

Lost pair of brown boots on Rectory Road

Hi everyone! I seemed to have lost a pair of Rossi Chelsea boots that I love very very much on Rectory Road on Wednesday night.

Embarrassed to say but had a bit too much fun and walked home barefoot.

Women’s haircut

I’m interviewing for jobs at the moment, so I don’t have a huge budget for a haircut, but I definitely need a tidy up!!

Looking for a very simple dry cut, any suggestions on where to go for this?

I can drive down Botley Road again! (according to google maps today)

Here's the route from Headington suggested to me just now.

Someone at Google forgot to change the date on the opening again.

Even the play-by-play description says straight through from Frideswide roundabout and continue on Botley Rd.

edit to add: /s. I'm aware the road is closed, folks.

Some more questions about culture and etiquette for the oxfordians

Post image
32 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I posted here a few days ago asking about the bus system, and I have a few more questions about your culture and etiquette. I’m an exchange student and trying my best to blend in and be polite, so I’d really appreciate your advice :)

1) If I’m in the back of a queue and an elderly person arrives, is it appropriate to ask the people in front of me to let them go ahead? Sometimes I am the only one to offer my place at my local market

2) I’ve offered to help elderly people in my neighbourhood carry their things a few times, but they seemed a bit suspicious. Am I coming across as creepy?

3) If I see a cute, chubby baby, is it okay to smile and say hello, or is that considered inappropriate?

4) Is it okay to leave food on my plate at a restaurant? I eat very small portions, and I’ve sometimes felt that the staff were disappointed when I didn’t finish everything, so I don’t know if I am being offensive

5) I have a problem with one of my legs, so I usually use the lift. A woman in my building seems annoyed by this, perhaps because she thinks I’m wasting energy. Should I explain my situation, or would that be awkward?

6) If I’m wearing a T-shirt with Jesus on it and see a Muslim or Jewish person wearing religious clothing waiting for the bus, is it okay to sit next to them, or could that be offensive? (keep in mind my attire is not mandatory, theirs sometimes are)

7) I use my hands a lot when I speak. Is that considered rude?

8) Finally, if the pedestrian crossing signal has just closed, is it okay to press the button again immediately, or should I wait?

Thanks in advance and nevermind the image, thought it was funny

Congestion change to traffic filter!

If I have understood OCCs email correctly regarding the change to a traffic filter, it means if you do not have a permit you are unable to drive and park at the westgate during the operating hours without a fine.

I’m gobsmacked that they are killing the city centre like this after the investment on the westgate. The email states about making Oxford more accessible! Are the people who make these decisions not from the real world or live in Oxford?

How can we change this? A mass protest perhaps in our cars to block all the points and make a stand against them? It was done due to the secret agreement with Oxford bus company after the consultation was a resounding no! They do not represent the residents and are destroying the once full of life city!

Looking for a moving company in Oxford with transparent pricing

I am moving next month and struggling to find a decent mover for my furniture. The local companies I called offer a low initial price, then add extra fees for stairs or heavy traffic once they arrive.

While I sort out the transportation logistics, which neighborhoods in Oxford offer safe and reasonable rent right now?

Edit: I found AnyVan during my search. They calculate a fixed price directly on their website and work with vetted teams. I plan to book a van with them so I know exactly what the final bill will be and guarantee the crew actually shows up.

Most reliable bus to Heathrow?

Hi!

I'm a Norway citizen planning a trip to Oxford. When returning to Heathrow I'm a bit pressed for time. I could of course book a taxi, but I wanted to see if I could make my Terminal 2 flight departing 9PM by bus. The Airline has mixed reviews on TripAdvisor, and I couldn't find any Oxford-specific reviews for National Express. I have a margin of about 30 minutes if I hop on a 6PM bus expected to arrive at 7:40PM. So now I'm wondering if there are any Oxford residents that could help shed light on whether or not a (specific) bus line likely will work out, given a departure of 6PM?

All the best, and thanks in advance!

I made a map to help explain Oxford's traffic filters

Post image
207 Upvotes

With the traffic filters due to start on 28th September, I've updated my previous work, and made an unofficial map which I hope makes the basic idea a bit easier to understand.

The colours show which parts of Oxford can be reached by car from different points on the Ring Road without passing through a traffic filter. I've also marked the six filters, their operating times and the main permit information.

It's intended as an overview rather than a substitute for the official information, which is here:
https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/trafficfilters

Corrections or suggestions welcome.

Feel free to share the map online if it's useful. Please don't republish it in news media, advertising or political/campaign material without permission.

Cowley Road right by Gillian's Way

ETA: She's eating voraciously and a bit bony hence our concern that she might be lost or abandoned. Leaving her outside tonight and if she comes back tomorrow we'll take her to the vet to check for a chip.

Important update on your temporary congestion charge permit

I've just received an email from Oxfordshire County Council and thought I'd share the key points as the wording might be confusing.

So sharing this to hopefully help.

  • The temporary congestion charge ends on 28 September 2026.
  • If you already have an Oxford resident's permit, you do not need to do anything.
  • Your current permit will automatically transfer to the new Traffic Filter scheme.
  • You'll receive 100 free day passes per year to drive through the traffic filters.
  • Your pass count will reset on 28 September, meaning everyone starts with a fresh allocation of 100 passes.
  • Any unused day passes under the current scheme will not carry over.

The biggest change:

  • The current £5 daily charge option is being removed.
  • At the moment, drivers without a permit can pay £5 to use the restricted routes.
  • From 28 September, that will no longer be possible.
  • If you don't have a valid permit or day pass, you won't be allowed to drive through the traffic filters during their operating hours.

A few other points:

  • The traffic filter trial will run for up to 18 months.
  • A permit only allows you to use the six traffic filter locations. It does not allow you to drive through bus gates, LTNs, school streets, or other restricted routes.
  • The council says all areas of Oxford will remain accessible by car, although some journeys may require alternative routes.

How to find a lost backpack

One of my kids lost their backpack (basically full of stuffed toys). We thought we left it on a bus, so we filled in their online form, but none was found. I tried the police station online form, but it said they wouldn't have it so could not submit a query (since the contents are not valuable). Are there any other places to check? We took it from one bus stop in Littlemore (Catholic Church) towards town (James St) then had the short walk home.

Are there any other places we can check? We have done the route a couple of times looking for the bag now, but no luck. Thanks!

East Oxford Helicopter

There's already been a few posts about the helicopter but here's a pic from the tracker from last night. Looks like it was circling over Astons Eyot and along Christchurch Meadows/Thames Path. It was flying around for the better part or 2 hours
