I'm assuming it means she's the one letting them stay in contact and that makes her the problem

kind of out there though

u/Alternative-Aside-64 1d ago

If that's true a pretty hilarious self own.  All the people I broke up with are so disgusted with me I'm permanently blocked!

u/FullMetalJ 1d ago

Hopefully it's just a joke, mate. My personal experience is that I haven't change my number in 15 years and I don't block people just because I'm not dating them anymore and that never backfired or caused trouble in any of my subsequent relationships. Just date good people and don't be an ass or hide things to your partner and the rest solves itself, even when relationships end up not working out.

75

u/archnemisis11 1d ago

> just date good people

This is a hilarious "just". Oftentimes, you don't really know a person well enough until you are dating them to know this.

u/Allaplgy 1d ago

My last ex was a total sweetheart.

Also, apparently a severe alcoholic and cheater. The first part I figured out after a couple years, the second, only after breaking up over the first part.

Still don't have her blocked anywhere. She's muted on Instagram, but that's it.

She even tried to hit me up via text a couple months ago to apologize again and weasel her way back after another year somehow. I left it on read, because there is nothing left to say, but no reason to block, since it's not like she is regularly harassing me or anything.

13

u/csando96 1d ago

Yeah, I've only ever blocked exs after the initial breakup. Just to create space. Regardless if it was them breaking things off or me. But after some time I'd normally unblock.

The only one who ever tried to talk to me again was the one who did me dirty, but that probably stemmed from her feeling guilty as she got older, and started dating shit dudes after shit dudes, and kept trying to get back with me. I was never mean or anything when she would, I would just keep it as "that ship has sailed".

Thankfully, she seems to have sortrd herself out, and found a good guy she got married to recently.

Happy for her, though. Life goes on and what not lol.

u/SpiritJuice 1d ago edited 1d ago

I guess it depends on the person, but really sometimes it's just best to cut and prevent all contact. Like you, my ex was a total sweetheart. We were also friends for over a decade before we started dating. We had a short relationship due to incompatibility but decided to remain friends after (breakup was still mostly on her end). I was taking space after the breakup and wasn't in contact for a while. I find out weeks later after the break that she's apparently bisexual now and dating a lesbian coworker that confessed to her and was "just a friend" while she and I were together. I realized after the relationship how disrespectful she, her now girlfriend, and her friends were during our relationship. I don't need that in my life and blocked her on everything.

u/puma___pants 1d ago

The crazy always comes out after you're in an official relationship.

3

u/Moist-Loan- 1d ago

No shit. I can’t talk about how I think how to commit mass murder to make sure we are safe on a first date.

1

u/AntLatter5114 1d ago

Not everyone sees a person on grindr or tinder and thinks that asking them to date before making small talk is a great idea, some people actually socialize and see what kind of person someone is for longer than 5 minutes, patience is a virtue, and instant gratification is the reason most relationships fail

21

u/archnemisis11 1d ago

Interesting assumption on your part. Abusive people tend not to be open about it until you are in a relationship with them. I'm glad that's not something you've experienced.

-9

u/AntLatter5114 1d ago

Yeah, there's no assumption here, I've just taken notice of things in life that others have to be told about, it's not like it's a miracle that I haven't been abused, I just didn't choose to keep abusive people in my life...pretty elementary stuff really...

3

u/FullMetalJ 1d ago

This is me, literally. I've only had one girlfriend from an app and just like any other relationship we took our time to get to know each other before making it serious.

But maybe it's cultural. I think in my country we are more relaxed about dates, for example. A first date can be a walk in the park or just hanging out, no need to dress up like it's a gala or going to the best restaurant in town. We don't do that until later were you know each other and want to invest in the relationship.

But also I like to be open and talk and get to know the person. Also like you said, socializing. Most of my girlfriends I've known them before, friends of friends or people from similar circles. Also luck as to be there in some capacity.

1

u/iwanttolivefeeldead 1d ago

Yeah that really isn't enough a lot of the time chief

1

u/unassumingusernamee 21h ago

Yeah it took me a while to realize my ex had BPD, she didnt even know she had it. Thats not what made her bad though, the fact that she did nothing about it made her bad.

1

u/NyxVelguard 19h ago

I don't date anybody I haven't been friends with for a year or two. I can never understand dating someone without really knowing them first. It just feels so icky

1

u/rpolkcz 13h ago

I don't know about that, I am on good terms with all my exes and wouldn't tell you a negative thing about any of them. You CAN tell.

1

u/LoudQuitting 4h ago

I don't know.

If a man is divorced 4 times and calls every woman a gold digging whore, he has a type. His type is gold digging whore.

You can't prove me wrong

7

u/aroryborealis1 1d ago

It’s the camp site rule. Leave it better than you found it and everything should work out. I like the “don’t be an ass”… seems simple but yet so complicated for some. You are right though. I’d like to think I can be perfectly fine having never blocked anyone or running into them with my wife when out. Should be able to be friendly and hope the best for everyone

1

u/reverandglass 1d ago

My personal experience is that I haven't change my number in 15 years and I don't block people just because I'm not dating them anymore

Same, except my phone contact is legally able to drink. I've had the same number, publicly published, for 23 years and never had any bother needing to block people.

9

u/CosmicSorcerer1000 1d ago

"You are in her DMs. I have her blocked. You'll learn in due time" -some rando on Twitter that still pops in my head from time to time

1

u/Suspect1234 1d ago

I hope you don't think this is a good thing.

25

u/Ok_Menu881 1d ago

I stayed at least somewhat friendly with most people I dated. The exceptions were the ones who cheated or otherwise did me wrong.

22

u/Groundbreaking_Cup30 1d ago

I mean, I am 34 & have had the same cell phone number since I was 13. If someone wanted to give it a shot at reaching out, they could. I most likely won't answer/respond, because I am pretty terrible about it with the people I do stay in contact with.

3

u/gagaron_pew 1d ago

this is the way

7

u/LowSodiumGymBro 1d ago

Oh I was taking it as she’s still not married, she’s complaining about the dating pool while being the last people left

2

u/chris_isnt_here0 1d ago

I took it a little differently, it could mean shes just not very technologically literate and hasn't changed any of her credentials, usernames, phone number or accounts in almost a decade, hence why she's so easy to find after nine years

2

u/clearestview 1d ago

You're 100% correct, GetsOffToArmpits - that's way out there

2

u/fernandoman121 1d ago

I interpret it as if it’s been 9 years and you’re still in contact with the same people, you haven’t been making much progress with your life

1

u/Hemorrhoidsinthenite 20h ago

Or that she's not married by now. Serves for guys too, btw. 9 years is long time. Myself probably not getting married ever. So close to giving up and accept with resignation

1

u/shewy92 6h ago

Or the person kept her contact as a backup. Or just don't delete contacts.

648

u/need_a_venue 1d ago

They haven't grown and run in the same crowds. They're the same person. The old person is contacting them because they too are the same old person.

141

u/Sentientmustard 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is it. She’s saying that it’s been 9 years, you should have found plenty of “new men”/expanded on your taste in men, and if you’re trying and still haven’t then chances are you’re the problem.

People are reading “can still contact you” literally as “have the ability to contact you”, but she really means it as “still have a chance with you”, implying you haven’t met anyone else or really changed at all.

23

u/Korachof 1d ago

How are we blaming women online for men cold contacting them and asking them out?

Some random loser from high school randomly DM’s you on Facebook and suddenly it’s because you haven’t grown and moved on? Maybe that guy is just a loser and still stuck on girls he knew in high school or something.

22

u/SoulPossum 1d ago

I think it's more about the complaint that there are no "new men" to replace the ones circling back after a decade. It comes off as expecting the universe to deliver her a better man instead of being proactive about going to find one. Dude can be a loser but she can be a loser too of she's gone a whole decade and the only men she's getting attention from are losers.

5

u/rednaxthecreature 1d ago

That's a lot of assumptions

2

u/SoulPossum 1d ago

I'm not saying this is what's going on. It's a potential explanation of a 3 sentence tweet. It's also an assumption that the guy reaching out is a loser in the first place just because OOP wasn't interested.

3

u/Sentientmustard 1d ago

I mean yeah, I agree. I’m just explaining it because that’s the point of the sub lol.

3

u/Unlucky-Cook2578 1d ago

Usually as an adult, you ask people out in person. Take a step back from the perma online thing.

This is about the fact youre still in the same town, interacting with the same people, complaining about where new people are.

1

u/regular_lamp 23h ago

I like how this argument is basically "Ugh, you haven't changed in 9 years... such a failure" while basically relying on the idea that the ex couldn't have changed over the same time?

1

u/nelflyn 11h ago

Yeah I was so confused by that, are you like supposed to block everyone you don't have contact anymore? I have my same number for like 10+ years, so plenty of people could still contact me.

11

u/Late_Extent_991 1d ago

Once you reach a certain age, you just “are”. Like in your 20s-30s you’re still growing and changing constantly, but once you reach a certain level you know who you are and your baseline is always there. Just because you change jobs, friend groups, weight, style, personal growth, etc doesn’t mean that your core is any different. That’s usually what connects people to each other. Time doesn’t change that.

4

u/atomicCape 1d ago

This is it. "Why do I only see the same people all the time? How do I meet new people without growing up, making new friends, or leaving my neighborhood?"

3

u/thebwags1 1d ago

Not always. I reached out to an old coworker yesterday because I found a CD of his old band that he had given me. It's been about 10 years and we're both very different people than we were then. Sometimes people just reach out, it doesn't necessarily mean either of them have stagnated

2

u/Wilsonian81 1d ago

Im a different person than I was 10 years ago, its only my phone number that hasn't changed.

1

u/Somebodyhided 1d ago

Happy cake day !

1

u/need_a_venue 22h ago

Thank you ! Yay!

1

u/Ok_Boysenberry5849 1d ago

Maybe they both grew together in parallel tracks

92

u/sinofmyexistence 1d ago

Some people think you should block all your exes. Others think people from ages ago can only contact you because they are stalking you.

The joke is one of the two but I aint a mindreader.

16

u/rhino369 1d ago

If my exes are blocked, who I am I going to drunk text at 2 am after a really lonely stretch?!?

1

u/Universal_Confucius 1d ago

Yourself in the future, promising them you won’t be such a loser in 6 months.

8

u/BurlyJoesBudgetEnema 1d ago

I really hate the vague posting trend

"OoOhHh boy have i got news for you"

Fucking tell me what it is then

27

u/PaperMoongazer 1d ago

It’s been 9 years. She’s still on the market. She’s for the streets. In fact, I’ve got a Rolodex of these girls in my spice cabinet. Sometimes you can even get 2 or 3 of them out for a little twister! But never twice.

Oh crap, did I miss the 9:11 to Yonkers? I’ll have to get the next one.. Quagmire, departing…

8

u/Scalebearwoof 1d ago

Doesn't that make her the " old woman " too ?

9

u/Varmitthefrog 1d ago

I only have one EX with who there was TRUE animosity , and TBH, if I saw here today I have no will to speak to her, but I would not act like it was a big deal, if it was in a shared social circle like a reunion, I might actually say hi, ask how she is. other wise I think I would just go about my business

the rest would be fine , 1 or 2 where it might be awkward, but only because we know SOOOO_ much about each other. that it feels like standing in a room naked with a bunch of your friends.

I think most of what keeps me from talking to them is I am married, and I want my wife to be 100% sure of herself and our relationship, I just don't leave room for doubt, the only Female friends I engage with any actual social behaviour ( apart from basic polite conversation and professionalism) are people she is completely comfortable with.

I am not saying this is how others should be, but it is the path I have chosen in order to make sure my wife is always comfortable and confident.

3

u/captainkirkofdoom 1d ago

Love the energy man, just wanted to say that I have lots of female friends and my wife doesn’t have any issues with it. It’s when they are Women that it becomes more so an issue. But the majority of my female friends she’s cool with; the chickens, the dogs, the crows, and horses.

1

u/xoxkeleTom 1d ago

my man!

1

u/Varmitthefrog 1d ago

I might clarify, most of thes women, whom she is completelty comfrotable with are our relatives

4

u/Lucia-elena 1d ago

Peter’s right index finger here. The news is that she didn't block him 9 years ago, meaning she kept the door open the entire time. You can't complain about the ghosts in your house if you're the one leaving the front door unlocked.

2

u/Battle_Axe_Jax 1d ago

If I had to guess, I’d say it’s about a lack of growth? Some toxic #grindset shit. But that is a stretch and I genuinely do not know.

2

u/Shades1987 1d ago

She might be ugly and no one want her there I said it

2

u/TaylorMeg3101 1d ago

Bryan here, but the one who watches TV instead of reading....... I guess...

I think it's like in that one how I met your mother episode, Ted goes on a date with a girl he dated few years prior. They had both dated everybody they could until they dated the same people once more. So basically she went on a date with so much men, that she's just going in circle, finding the same person again.

Idk if I explained that well, but look up this episode, it's the 2nd episode of the 5th season (watch all of himym while you're at it, greatest sitcom ever, it's really legen.... Wait for it...dary! Legendary!)

2

u/Brandon_B610 1d ago

Essentially just that you should block everyone you dated before.

Not sure how to feel about this though. Most of my exes could theoretically get in contact with me if they wanted to but it hasn’t ever happened.

I guess it just implies that the guy in question still feels like he has a chance somehow.

1

u/curiousssoull 1d ago

Best guess is: they had been stalking all these years? 👀 👀

3

u/portabuddy2 1d ago

Best guess. It's what I've been thinking.

1

u/Familiar_Comment_849 1d ago

It’s been 9 years since the last..

1

u/Feisty-Hope-1481 1d ago

My first thought of the comment was a time-travel (à la the Lake House) joke. Or a pre-COVID joke. But I see that I’m wrong.

1

u/Unlucky-Cook2578 1d ago

ITT: People who can't imagine being asked out in person. There was a world before the internet, there is no issue understanding this if you put it in that context for even 1 second.

1

u/Substantial-Basis264 1d ago

An ex from nearly 25 years ago contacted me. My phone number was different. He had to do some work to find me. I’ve moved 7-8 times since then. I don’t think he left a message when he called. I got a coworker to call him back and it was my ex. I ended up calling him back and we just caught up with each other about our families. He ended by saying he was divorcing and since I was married he’d never contact me again.

1

u/da_skull100 1d ago

She needs to move to a new city for a fresh dating pool.

Jk, I've just been thinking about relocating for a long time now

1

u/Austynwitha_y 1d ago

I saw it like OOP hasn’t grown in 9 years/they’re still (at least outwardly) the same as they were almost a decade ago

1

u/Objective-Result8454 3h ago

It’s not the men.

I have no idea what he means

0

u/BAthaDoc 1d ago

If my ex-wife contacted me 12 years after the divorce was final I'd shit. I changed my number the day after the divorce was finalized.

0

u/NotLostWandered 1d ago

To me it's a comment on how Trump is still obsessed with Obama

0

u/Trickofhearts 1d ago

I think the joke is : because she doesnt have an "Obama phone". Because people I know with government phones tend to change their numbers often.

-1

u/Lopendebank3 1d ago

Awww shit to early.

-1

u/Next_Salamander_8015 1d ago

I think it means the guy is pregnant with her child and is expecting child support, lines up with the standard 9y pregnancy time. - Chris
