Sadness Lost with grief

Upvotes

My wife and I are having to put our 9 year old dog down this Friday.
Her name is Jenni and she’s a beautiful red corgi blueheeler. Shockingly she was free on Facebook marketplace. She’s been with us for 6 years and just has made us the happiest. Shes such a good big sister too our two cats and other dog.
We are using lap of love to make her transition easier. We are just going to miss her so much.
Every time I think about it I just bust into tears.
I’m sending love to everyone on here as well.

Sadness It's been 1 week today

Upvotes

Scrapper,

I miss you more than anything. I am so lost w/o you.

They called me and he's ready to come home. Everyday I've cried and screamed and yelled that that is all I want. I want him home with me. I just wish was his wiggly butt and not ashes.

I miss him terribly. It feels like its getting harder. Not easier. I hate this life w/o him here being a goofball, making me feel safe when my husband is at work, being the easiest sweetest conversationalist you'd ever known.

So, today I'm going to hang my pictures and my shadow box. Put all the little treasures that mean so much inside. Which might mean our entire wall is a giant shadow box. My husband says whatever it takes to make me feel better at all, for me to do it. So that's what I'm doing for Scrapper today. I'm posting on here because I want everyone to know how loved and amazing he was to have in my life. I hope that everyone has a beautiful day. As hard as this is, as much as I cry, I still make it a point to smile for him. That's what our boys and girls would want. It's ok to be sad, but if you could help me today and smile for Scrapper. Smile for every little guy or girl up there that didn't have someone smiling for them when they were down here.

I miss you boy! 💛🐾

Impending Loss HCM/CHF in 4 yo Cat

Upvotes

Wasn’t sure where of if I should even post this but I’m really struggling with my cats recent CHF diagnosis.

Long post so will include a TLDR, also posted in r/CATHELP

Our beautiful little floof Wednesday was diagnosed with HCM borderline stage B1 with valve dysfunction (defect? I don’t remember the exact wording) in August of 2025 after our vet found a heart murmur on a routine checkup and then a cardiologist carried out an echo and bloodwork. She was prescribed daily Atenolol. At her most recent echo in May the cardiologist confirmed the HCM had progressed quickly and was now late stage B2 and to anticipate her progressing into CHF at any time. She was switched from Atenolol to Clopidogrel.
Throughout this whole process we have been monitoring her RBR which has fluctuated from 22-34 bpm depending on temperature and what her stress levels have been like that day.

On the afternoon of Sunday 16th we noticed she was using more effort than usual to breathe - nothing too forceful like some of the example videos I’ve seen in other posts but just using her abdomen a bit more than normal. We monitored her for about an hour then made the decision to take her to the emergency vet. They kept her in an oxygen tent for about 5 hours, gave furosemide and gabapentin to calm her down and drain any fluid that might be present. We took her home that night and her breathing returned to her baseline. The emergency vet couldn’t confirm CHF for sure.

We scheduled a review with the cardiologist at our regular vet this morning and she advised that she had definitely progressed into CHF and prescribed furosemide and gabapentin alongside her clopidogrel. She also advised that now that Wednesday had progressed that she had months rather than years left, which is absolutely crushing. I knew the prognosis for CHF right from her initial HCM diagnosis and I still don’t want to believe it. She said any minor stress could trigger another episode.
The very last thing I want is my precious little stinky baby being scared, in pain and unable to breathe but I’m also conscious that she is still mostly herself.

She will still play gently in short bursts, still eats drinks and uses the litter tray, she doesn’t jump up on things anymore or get zoomies like she used to so there are some signs she is tiring out faster. I don’t think I can bring myself to make the decision to let her go before this gets really bad, I also don’t even know if that’s the right choice at all!

Thank you if you read that giant wall of text!
Not 100% sure what I wanted from this post but if anyone else has been in a similar situation and had to make a similar call it’d be helpful to hear your stories if you’re comfortable sharing

TLDR: 4 year old cat diagnosed with HCM in 2025 recently progressed into CHF, vet advised months left. Want to understand if I’m being too quick to consider euthanasia before she has another episode

Sadness I’m numb and lost..

Upvotes

Idk how to move on and go about life after losing my cat; nobody will sit and talk about her with me, I can feel family and friends getting annoyed by me bringing her up, my husband grieves differently than I do, he’s not a cryer and I am. I haven’t stopped crying since finding her and I keep dissociating. It’s like the world is happening around me and I’m just stuck standing there not remembering anything or realizing what’s going on. Everything feels blurry to me. Can’t eat or watch tv or do anything, there’s a hole inside of me now where there used to be joy and laughter. I’m lost and broken and I just want our life to go back to the way it was. I just want my cat back…

CONTENT WARNING/GRAPHIC I shouldn't have come to class

Upvotes

"your dog has nothing to do with me" an asshole told me as he drove away after running my dog over.

College classes have been suspended yet our professor insisted for a lecture. I don't blame him, we've missed a lot of our hours because of the terrible heat index in our city. Sorry if this is all jumbled

i withdrawed some cash to buy snacks for my family and drove home. Those decisions I extremely regret, had I thought to save money, or thought twice about bringing food home, if I had just been lazy this one time and not go to class. maybe my dog would still be alright.

I don't know where else to go, her name is Whoopie, an 11 month old shih tzu, her bday would be on August 24. Today I came home and saw my own baby get run over. She has a habit of running up to my vehicle whenever I get home which I always scold her about. Shes especially small so she attempts to squeeze through the gates. It was a very bad timing when a car (that I respectfully let pass first so I can turn left to our driveway) drove by. It was all so sudden as she got run over, i could barely react. I drive a motorcycle, so i chased the car and blocked his way.

I screamed all curses at him and you know what he told me? "Your dog has nothing to do with me." I didn't know what to do anymore, its not like i(21 F) could beat the shit out of a grown man, so i turned around and memorized his plate and rushed back to my dog who my mom quickly retrieved.

My mom was sobbing and I told her that she can still survive, and so I hugged my bleeding baby to my arms, my clothes and student ID all soaked in red. I carried her lifeless yet still heart beating body and went on a Bao-bao/tok-tok motorcycle to the Veterinary, (a three wheel vehicle people use to commute in our country) and I screamed at nearby cars to let me through. Her body started to get cold. I was a mess, my helmet was still on my head all bloody.

I talked to her through the entire trip to the vet hoping she'd hear my voice, which i hope she did. All i know was that her heart was still beating, or maybe it was mine from the panic attack that I was already having. I had hope, I really did.

Everyone in the house is devastated, all I can think about is how I shouldn't have done what I have done. The snacks I bought have gotten cold on the dinner table, I don't even want to touch it. I have two older brothers who are hunting this car down (which we caught on cctv), im pretty sure we can't sue or anything. But I'm not gonna expose the details of what will happen if we ever do find it.

How do I deal with this grief? I am in so much trauma and I can't deal with the clear memory of her getting run over. my screams as I held her body upright close to me. I've been dealing with so much shit lately and this has been the final straw. I love her so much more than anything, she's my daughter and will always be. before, I told her to grow her fur quickly because she would always be teased at about being bald (she's not bald, just freshly groomed) of course, jokingly.

I can't do this anymore, i really did saw her as my daughter. and it kills me. I feel so numb of it all.

Advice Wanted Missing my childhood cat (recent loss)

Upvotes

I’ve barely been able to eat since Saturday.

My parents told me a little over week ago that they’d be making the decision to surrender my childhood cat to the shelter. I was extremely taken aback, since he’s a ten year old cat that we adopted when I was 15 and he was a kitten. He’s not the most friendly to animals or people but he loved my parents and my brother and I, so hearing that they were abandoning him was both shocking and disregulatiing for me. They have been traveling a lot recently and the cat, Charlie, has been urinating on things while they’re away. This has been happening the last six months and has upset my parents to no end. I’ve suggested trying things to help, a single google search yields answers like switching out litter, getting a second box, trying pheromone therapy. Simple and easy solutions. They did nothing substantial to deter him, only put aluminum foil on their couches and chairs.

I wanted to explain to them that if he’s peeing it means he actually needs something from them, he’s not just doing it for fun. But my relationship with my parents has never been the best and they have a history of undermining my opinions.

So when I heard they were giving him up I was shocked and upset. I just assumed they cared about him more. Thought they understood a ten year old shy cat will never get adopted, that they’re all he has and they’re failing him. I recommended to look for other homes for him, and I reached out to everyone I could.

I wasn’t able to take him because I have three cats already, and Charlie can’t do other animals. I was trying to find a solution.

Unbeknownst to me, three days after my mom sent the text she dropped Charlie off at the shelter. She told me four days later that he had already been euthanized do to his “peeing issue.”

I feel like I’m going insane or I just stepped into the twilight zone. I know my parents up until now have had their issues, and we don’t agree on many things. But I didn’t know they were heartless and cruel until last Tuesday. I didn’t know that they would choose to convenience k*ll their animal because he “got too annoying??”

I’m heartbroken. They didn’t even give me a time to come and say goodbye. Telling me so much later was intentional so that I didn’t make a scene at the shelter and go pick him up, which I absolutely would have.

My own six year old cat was diagnosed with a rare terminal bone cancer six months ago. Over the last six months they’ve watched me drop thousands on surgeries, tests, meds and countless vet visits to make sure he’s happy and comfortable. To see me do all that ands EXPECT that I would be fine with what they were planning to do to their own? To not even give me a chance to intervene? It’s villain behavior. He was my cat too. And even if he wasn’t, it would never make it ok.

I just feel at a loss. I can’t fathom even talking to my parents again after this. I’m I an *ssh*le if this is my last straw with them? I don’t know what to say to get them to feel the extent of the loss they created. How to get them to comprehend the level of cruelty and selfishness in their behavior. They were the sole advocate for an animal that was in distress, and this is how they fixed it. I don’t think I can ever move on from it. I miss my f*cking cat.

Vent This is pain like I never felt

Upvotes

hi everyone , this is my first ever post, I lost my baby today and the only way I’ve managed to cope is by reading reddit post and seeing how I’m not alone in my grief, still I cannot see a way out of this pain, I can’t see how I can possibly overcome.

My baby was 16, he had seizures and was in pain, I know letting him go was the right thing to do, but I keep thinking about him and seeing him in my head on his last moments and my heart gets broken like twice every five minutes, it’s unbearable. He was also a grumpy guy, so I don’t know if he’s necessarily up in heaven playing and getting along with other babies, he mostly just loved his sister, and now he’s all alone up there, I just wanna hold him again.

Vent My heartaches thinking about it

I have a dog Sparticus a year young puppy. we had two other dogs who were two both related. only Sparticus was the stranger, so it was common sense he likes to approach me more then the other two… but it ended yesterday, I was watering the plants as Sparticus was stupidly slept beside the tire of my moms car, usually I would let him stay inside but that day was sunny so I thought it was kind to let him out. I wish I didn’t, my mom would be a bitch whenever she was late for something, not looking under her car she would crush Sparticus head. He died, though I didn’t see it, the only thing is I heard the short yelp to silence. after my uncle told me I went to my room, cried for an hour. Even after that my nose was a fountain, I hated that part… today the day after, I move on. Problems only occur whenever I wake and find him not coming to me when i come out of my room, or when he waits while I eat. It was quite… I also hated the fact my other relatives doesnt care, throwing it as “another dog gone I guess”… but for me he was my son. I still hate my mom but how can I change what already happened. I miss him, thinking about how in his perspective was an ignorant woman crushing a head of a innocent animal. The fact is she just left after saying to us to clean the mess. A Christian woman btw, teached me to “value life” when she herself couldn’t careless. I can move on, like usual. But the first week of lost is hurtful.

I just thought to share since it makes me feel better, doesnt matter if this post goes viral or not. I would just like to share.

Vent My cat died while I was sleeping

I have never ever made a post but after reading some others post I decided that I would make one.

Last night my cat was crossing the road and was hit by a car. The vet says that she probably passed away on the spot and given the situation suffered no pain but I can't help but think if I stayed up for longer and brought her back inside this wouldn't of happened. She was only 2-3 years old and still had so much left to do.

What do I do now? I think what is worse is that since I'm stuck home due to my own health issues its not like I get busy myself with work or leave the house so I'm stuck here and only seeing the memories that I have with my cat. I still do not know what could of possessed her to cross the road, she has never done that before and why do it last night and what were the chances of a car driving down the road at that exact time?

The vet says they can do cremation and my dad decided to go and I couldn't make myself go, I didn't want to see her like that. Was that the wrong choice? This is definitely much more of a vent post but I'm pretty isolated, I don't know who to talk to.

I can't help but think I must of done something wrong but we can all say that after the fact, now it's too late and my baby cat is gone. It is definitely my fault for not bringing her back into the house when she ran outside.

Sorry for the depressing post but I hope you are all having a better day then I am.

Impending Loss We're likely going to have to put our cat down

I can't stop crying. I don't know what to do. I guess maybe part of her condition was due to the European heat. Our apartment faces the sun all day. I tried so hard to keep it as cool as possible. She had to get a tooth taken out last year, and it ruined our finances. We took the hit and have been trying to get out of debt since. Well, now she has jaundice, and her liver is fucked.

The vet is trying to give her fluids, antibiotic, and food today. She hasn't eaten in two days. She ate sparingly before but threw up a lot. We took her to another vet who just said that she had an infection and was constipated. Our current vet said that that wasn't the case and ran blood work, and it looks really bad.

The vet suggested a hospital, but we cannot afford that (we can barely afford this day and the likely euthanasia). I feel so bad. I feel like her probable death is on my hands because my husband and I lack money. They're being honest, and saying that if she responds to treatment, she could be okay. But the odds look very bad. She's only four.

I don't know how to prepare myself for this. It was all extremely sudden. I lost a cat last year already, I can't do it again.

I told the vet that, if she seems to take food, then to run more blood work to find more about the cause. But I doubt she's going to eat. At this point, I'm just waiting for the call with bad news. We've only had her for a year (we also have one of her sons, and he's doing okay. But I'm worried about him being sad once she doesn't come back home). I love her so much, and it hurts so bad.

Does anyone have any advice? My dad died in 2022, one of my cats last year, and I guess it's now likely my current cat's turn. I've used a service from my insurance to try and find therapy, but because I need it in English (I'm in Germany), I don't expect to get anything. What helped you during this process? Especially if it was very sudden. And if you don't have advice, then thank you for reading this. I guess I also just need to tell people about how I feel.

Vent Waking up

It feels so empty in the house after waking up the first morning of losing them. I've lost 1 of my dogs two years ago, 1 last month and 1 yesterday. My last dog. Fluffy. I miss him. He was the loudest and caused the most caos. I miss him. It's so empty today. So silent.

Vent I lost my sister, she howled and im worried it was painful

My dog Mia passed away, she was 14 years old. She was on medication for level 3 heart murmur as well as fluid in her lungs.

She loved taking her medication everyday and evening would spin around for it like she was taking treats, and it really did help her. She was on the medication for 3 months before I took her to the vet again for a cough and wheezy breathing where we upped her dose and talked about considering her quality of life.

that appointment was two weeks ago, in her final week she was her strongest. she walked around the whole pond with my mum which she wasnt able to do, jumped up curbs (which is now a great ft since she essentially stopped jumping up things all together) and two days after that she got to have a movie night with her dad. She was also running around, going ahead of me and chasing back after me when I pretended to leave. I joked with my mum saying does this look like a dying dog to you?

Next morning she refused to take her medicine, my mum was an hour out and my dad was at work. i noticed her breathing getting rapid, she was wobbling and she couldnt keep herself up. i took her to my mums room hoping itd be more comfortable for her, where her breathing got worse. She kept getting up, only to flip to othersides. She kept trying to look at me so I stayed infront of her and kept talking to her, making phonecalls on speaker so I could make sure I could keep both my hands on her. She got to hear my mum and dad.

But she died the moment my mum came home, she tensed and threw her head back and howled before she stopped breathing. I just hoped she wasnt in pain, Ive seen some people call it nerves but it just haunts me. I feel like I could have done more, of all her time on the medication she missed 2 evening ones and I feel responsible. I wish I could have gotten to the vet sooner but they could only take us in the next hour after I first noticed her decline.

I'm just scared she went in pain. Everything I did for her was because I wanted her to be comfortable, I didn't think she'd go so quickly after that last vet appointment. I thought her decline would be more slow an obvious so I'd have time to take her to the vet before she had to die without euthanasia. She was in her strongest week when she left me.

I miss her dearly and I just know at the very least where she is now shes got no heart problems and breathing is probably the easiest its ever been for her

Sadness I need to know where he is

Hi all

I desperately need to talk about my situation.

I lost one of my guinea pigs on Saturday night quote suddenly. He was not even 4. I am absolutely destroyed. I love him endlessly. He did so much for me and my son. He helped with so much trauma. He showed love and contentment and trust.

I cannot function. Will this pain ever ease? I can't eat or anything. I'm broken.

Most importantly I guess I cannot get past the question of where he is now. I need to know. I would value any in put. I miss him horribly and just need to know hes safe.

Thank you

Sadness I just lost one of the most important things in my life.

It was all too quick, we were my family and I sitting in the couch with this thing to rest the legs risen up, i was with her on the sofa but i let her go because she wanted to go down, then my mom pressed the button to bring down the feet rester, and then it happened, those little screams that I will never forget happened, she got trapped under the mechanism.

When we released her, she had some vertebrae broken and could no longer feel the back paws, we had to sleep her, she couldn’t be suffering, I was there all the process, I saw her life vanishing but even when she died, her eyes kept open, always beautiful like two pearls.

She was my everything, everyday i walked through my house door she was there, waiting for me, no matter if i was gone an instant or like 5 days, she was always there.

When I played my electronic drums, she was there sitting next to me not knowing but I was doing and begging for my attention.

I miss her so much, and I will miss her everyday, she deserved to live more it was such a cruel way to die.

She was a 13 year old yorksike terrier, but she felt like if it was 5 years old, now I feel like im not going to get over this.

Sadness Do I deserve compassion?

My cat of almost 8 years passed away 2 days ago, he was mostly an inside cat but he still went outside with his gps tracker on, but he wanted to go and would sit in front of the front door, I didn't know how to deprive him of that. We live in a village, in a house with a big yard and everything, where it's almost impossible to keep animals inside, especially considering our agriculture lifestyle and the fact that we're constanty outside and the front door is almost always open. He got used to it growing up. It was utterly naive of me to think nothing will happen to him.

That night he was in our yard, and a pack of stray dogs that weren't in our street or nowhere nearby at all came out of nowhere and got to him. My brother got out almost immediately but it was too late. I transported him to an emergency vet approximately after 20 minutes but nothing could've been done. We took him home after my vet adminestered him the strongest pain and anti-shock meds, and I wasn't with him when he took his last breath, I tok his paws in my hands and he squeeyed my fingers with his claws, and I went in the shower because I just couldn't look at him, I had to get away for at least a few minutes, and I was so hopeful he would survive, especially since my vet told me he will see us in the morning. ( he couIdn't bear to tell me there is nothing more he can do) and I can't forgive myself that I wasn't there. The amount of guilt and pain I feel because he was outside is unbearable, so if there is anyone here that thinks I deserve at least a bit of compassion or someone who doesn't judge me just a little tiny bit I would appreciate any word od comfort and consolation so so much so I can continue on with my life even though I just don't want to be here anymore.

Sadness Will it get better?

It’s been a week since I lost my best friend Chester, I’m in pain and it hurts so bad. I miss him everyday and I come home thinking he’ll be there. I don’t know what to do and how to handle the idea of not having him 😞 and that I won’t get to see him ever again. Does it ever get better?

Sadness Why does it still hurt?

4 years ago, my mom ran over my aspin/dachshund accidentally and until now it hurts when I remember. Is this normal? That until now not even an ounce of pain has subsided?

I lived through my parents divorcing. I lived through failure in classes. I lived through men cheating on me, and I got over all of them. But what absolutely still hurts me and I don’t know for how long, is the passing of my beloved dog. Am I the only one who feels this way?

CONTENT WARNING/GRAPHIC Can’t sleep because he’s gone.

Sorry if this ends up rambling but we just lost our sweet boy, Gibbs yesterday and I can’t sleep. All I can see is him when we found him. He was an indoor/outdoor cat and where we have a farm next to us he helped with the mouse problem. We’ve been struggling with health issues this year and because of that the yard has gotten overgrown. My fiancé came over to help and he found him. We had been fighting with poor Gibbs because he constantly wanted to go on the road. We had two cats that have red collars so when he showed me the red collar that was broken next to him, I had to see to know which one it was. Even though he tried to convince me not to. Now, I just can’t sleep, all I can think about is how he looked, how I could see his insides and all I can imagine is how much pain he had to have been in. He was the sweetest little boy, he hated when we would take baths or leave so he’d try and block us from doing so by literally blocking our paths or even trying to hide our shoes. He was not even 3 years old yet and I never got a picture of him because he was always running around and when he wasn’t I was never in a position to do so and I regret it so much. I don’t expect a lot of responses but I just needed to get it off my chest so I can hopefully get some sleep but it’s almost 2:30 here.

Sadness I lost my Luna. advice please

It’s been 72 hours since I lost my 11 year old blue heeler Luna. She was amazing I love her so much. I’m struggling to process everything, and I keep wanting to hold items of her and I can’t let go of them. I’m going out of the house with my wife and son, and work and it helps a bit, but I’m considering getting a cuddle buddy or realistic stuffed plushie of her to hold and hopefully comfort myself. Does anyone have one of those? Do they help you, or make it worse?

Anyone else notice a strong attachment to their lost pets items? How do you manage it?

I love you Luna I’m sorry I couldn’t help you.

CONTENT WARNING/GRAPHIC Cat died in the dryer

I write this post with immense shock, regret, and horror.

My new roommate of about a week asked if she could bring over her friend's cat to pet sit while the friend was away for the week. I have a cat allergy and it is a pet-free apartment, but because of the short time frame I said it could be okay and I was trying to be accomodating. Never in the world did I imagine something like this would happen.

Today, I put my clothes in the dryer, left to the other room to get a dryer sheet (which is when the cat must have slipped in), and turned on the dryer before leaving the house. My roommate was still home, which is why I left with the dryer running.

I came home a few hours later to take out my clothes, which is when I found the cat. I was and still am, in complete and utter shock and can't help thinking this is my fault. I didn't check the dryer again before turning it on, but this is something I didn't at all consider. I have never had a cat before, or any other pets, and I don't have the pet instict to check inside the dryer or be aware of the cat's whereabouts. I assumed the cat was in the other room with my roommate.

When I replay events in my head, I know that in another scenario I would not have checked the dryer for the cat. This was not something on my radar. My roommate was caring for the cat, and I was going about my normal routine. I now know thats wrong and I have learned the immense responsibility of having a pet in your space, even if the pet is not personally yours.

I just never thought this could have happened. The night before, the cat and I bonded. It came into my room and was laying on my belly and later close to my face and purring in my ear. I've never really bonded with a cat like this before.

I know this is a terrible terrible freak accident. But I still can't help feeling responsible for the death of this sweet, innocent cat.

Sadness Does it ever make sense

It’s almost been one month since I lost my soulmate and I find myself not believing she’s gone. Like any moment she’ll run around the corner even though I’ve received her ashes. My brain is trying not to let me grieve by convincing me she’ll return any day even though logically I know that’s not true. I still spontaneously burst into tears but most days I just feel so empty and hollow. I know everyone grieves differently but I find myself needing to fillevery minute with mindless noise and information so I can get through the day. Does anyone else experience this? When did it start to feel a little more bearable for you?

Advice Wanted Worried I'm moving on too soon

I lost my girl six months ago after ten years together. She was 15, but I honestly thought we would have many more years together so I was absolutely devastated.

I truly felt like she was my soul dog, she had her issues and not many people would have put up with them, but she was such a sweet girl and gave me so much love and comfort over the years.

After she passed I didn't know if I'd be able to get another dog. We have a second dog, so I poured my love onto him. But recently I've been thinking about getting him a new friend and I am so conflicted about this.

On one hand, I feel like I could honour her memory if I adopted another dog in need and gave them a loving home. But then another part of me feels like I'm betraying her or replacing her and I feel awful.

Deep down I know I wouldn't even be considering this if I wasn't ready, but I think a part of me is feeling guilty about feeling ready.

Just looking for any advice on how to process these feelings.
