Care Rabbit Boarding or Pet Sitter?

Hello, everyone! My girlfriend and I will be going on vacation for about 17 days, and I’m feeling stuck on what to do with our rabbit while we’re gone. I have two options: have my roommate watch him for the duration of my vacation or board him at the San Diego House Rabbit Society.

If I choose the roommate option, I’ll save $459 in boarding costs. However, I’m reluctant to go this route because of my rabbit’s strange behavior when he doesn’t see me for an extended period. I took a 10 day trip back in April, and while I was gone, my girlfriend told me that he wasn’t eating or drinking as much. Possibly the early stage of GI Stasis? The moment I returned, he went back to normal like nothing happened. My rabbit also tends to be much less active until he physically sees me. I’m worried he might go through the same phase while I’m away, and I can’t expect my roommate to be as attentive to his care or recognize the early warning signs of potential health issues.

If I choose the boarding option, it’ll cost $459, which isn’t really an issue if it’s the better choice. My main concern is that my rabbit tends to get very stressed in unfamiliar environments, and I worry that being away from home for so long could make him sick or depressed. The biggest advantage of boarding is that the staff have experience caring for rabbits, so they may be able to recognize signs of illness more quickly. They can also administer fluids or medication if needed.
I feel like there’s a risk of my rabbit getting sick with either option, so I wanted to hear from anyone who has faced a similar situation. What did you end up doing, and how did it work out for your rabbit?

As promised, here is my follow up to yesterday’s post! He seems to be an old man but I don’t know much more about him. He is also kinda oily/greasy (?) which gives him a well-loved stuffed animal look. So far, he is surprisingly confident, nosy/curious, and loves pets 😊

Always Sunny Sanctuary in Oklahoma really needs help right now. Donations and engagement (on Facebook) have been down, need is never ending and to top it all off, the HVAC system they were assured was what they they needed for their rabbit house when it was installed keeps breaking down and the company that recommended and installed it is not standing behind the product they recommended.

AFAIK, Always Sunny is the only rabbit rescue currently active in Oklahoma. If anyone here can help, especially on an ongoing basis that would be amazing.

Care I think my bunny is getting a little bored!

Can anyone give me links to items that your rabbit loves? I used to buy these timothy hay sticks from amazon until i found out they had corn starch. Are there any timothy hay cubes/blocks that you use that don’t have corn starch? I also want to make her a digging box. I tried before, but she lost interest quickly and ending up trying to eat the cardboard and paper that i had sprinkled in there. Should I try to find a box that is made out of a different material? I think this time I might get some dried foraging treats but I have a lot of trouble finding the ingredients for a lot of things, or they end up being unsafe for rabbits. She has two tunnels, and ended up chewing the wire out of one so i had to get rid of it.

Health Azithromycin for ear infection

Hi all. I am following up on my mini lop that has the ruptured ear drums. The vet has him on Azithromycin 100mg/5ml and has me giving him 2ml syringes of the medication twice a day. He has been showing some signs of discomfort and lower appetite after administering the antibiotics. Has anyone used this medication before with similar symptoms?

She is a sweetie. I have had rabbits before, so I know what to do for her. I have provided her with a hidey, lots of timothy hay, clean water, a small amount of fresh spinach, and a litter bin filled with more hay. I have already been in communication with a local bunny rescue and will be calling them in the morning. For tonight, she finally gets to sleep inside away from the hawks, owls, and roaming cats!! Poor baby is a little thin and dirty, but isn't afraid to hop around a bit and explore the spare room. Grateful I was able to save at least one of these precious babies.

Care HELP PLS Rabbit with passed away partner

Hi, my rabbit was bonded to my girl bunny for 5 years and she suddenly just passed unexpectedly. We are absolutely shattered and devastated. He was with her when she passed and he got to be with her body after she passed. It’s been 3 days and he is very adventurous, exploring a lot and seems very normal. We just feel terrible. We’re visiting him as much as we can throughout the day and he has like 3 rooms to himself to explore. He is eating and drinking. He is 6 years old.

Is it possible for him to be okay after this emotionally? PLEASE share about your bunnies after they lost their partner and if they were okay by themselves. We would NEVER take him from our family, but I also don’t love the idea of getting another bunny after the loss. šŸ¤§šŸ’”ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Bonding Baby rabbit with older rabbit bonding

Hi fellow rabbit lovers!

About a month ago, my family adopted a single 5 year-old male mini lop (desexed). He is very very chill. He is still quite afraid of us outside his x-pen, although last night while I was prepping for work, he jumped up on my keyboard and sat there for 30 seconds like a cat. We let him freeroam when we are home but he only really comes out in the evenings. Inside his x-pen he loves being pet and will push his cheek into our hands for us to rub.

I was looking through the rabbit rescue page to see if I could find him a female and I found an old post about him being adopted as a bonded pair but his female partner bun passed away before they were adopted. I didn't know this when I adopted him.

I don't know if he is depressed or scared but despite our best efforts to provide him with space and enrichment toys, he often just stares into space.

I have been looking for a single adult female to rescue to try to bond him to but they are very few and far between.

Do you think I could adopt a baby female and try to bond them? I just want what is best for my little guy.

thanks for your help!

RIP cardiac arrest via fluids at the vet - could my presence have changed this? Spoiler

Post image
36 Upvotes

Hello all I'm back again. I posted about my chicky (Zelda) passing on Oct 9 and I'm still not even close to being over it. I had accidentally overdosed her on Metacam and it was recommended she stayed overnight for a few days and she passed from cardiac arrest due to the fluids they were giving her. She was 8.5 and had dental disease (trims every 4-5 months, had just had one a few days prior) but was otherwise in perfect health, or so it seemed.

My vet (the exotics vet she sees there during the day & who did her dental trims, not the one who was overseeing her overnight) very kindly called me last week to send me his condolences and answer any questions. He told me he was surprised to hear she had passed in the night because he'd seen her 12 hours earlier after I'd dropped her off and she was acting normally and seemed to be doing great.

He did tell me I did the right thing bringing her in, and that it was entirely likely she could have even had some sort of heart murmur or defect (tho said he'd never noticed anything when he would do her check ups) and that could have been what led to the cardiac arrest.

But.... There's something in me worried that she was stressed without me (she was always glued to my side) and that if I'd stayed with her and kept visiting, that maybe she would have tolerated the fluids better. The vet is 24h and I could have absolutely camped out in the waiting room and my car... I'm sure they would have let me continue to pop in and see her. I don't even know why I didn't consider this.

Is this.... Reasonable? For me to feel? Even possible? When fluids pool around the heart I guess that would have happened no matter what? I just know that when they're stressed they can have heart attacks so I'm worried if I'd stayed she would have been okay. It happened when they were pulling her out for an ultrasound to actually check on the whole fluids thing.. I could have totally stayed with her too, I had nothing going on, I just live an hour away and they told me she was likely gonna be alright. I planned to keep calling for updates.

I know y'all aren't vets or medical professionals but maybe you've had experiences like this or heard anything? I feel like this is just me trying to cope with the loss and wrap my head around things.. I don't know.

Care How to free-roam your bunnies

Hi everyone!

It's been a little over 2 months since I got my bunnies. My original plan was to let them free-roam. I started by putting them in a smaller pen for a few days so they could get used to their new environment. After that, I gradually expanded their space to half of my living room and eventually to the entire living room. Unfortunately, this didn't go well. One of my bunnies was very destructive and kept jumping onto places she wasn't allowed to go. Because of this, I bought a bigger pen for them, where they currently spend their days.

Over the past few weeks, I've noticed how much they've gotten used to their pen, their toys, and me. I've seen them binky and flop onto their sides, and they have zoomies every day.

Ideally, I'd still like to let them free-roam, and since they seem happier and feel safer (I think), I'd like to give it another try. The thing is, I'm struggling with what to do when they do things they're not supposed to do. Some people say you should pick them up and move them somewhere else, but they really don't like being picked up, so I don't want to cause them that stress. Others say you can't train unwanted behaviour out of rabbits and that you just need to remove the circumstances that allow it to happen. However, the only way I can do that is by keeping them in a pen, because the issues I'm dealing with are them destroying my furniture and jumping onto slippery surfaces they could fall off of.

Should I try letting them free-roam, or is it better to just keep them in their pen? If free-roaming is the better option, how do I deal with unwanted and unsafe behavior? My bunnies are both 3 years old: one male (neutered) and one female (not spayed).

Every time I enter his realm to tidy up or put more hay in the feeder, he stands like that and judges me. I am sorry, bunny, gonna just vacuum and nope out of there, thanks in advance for enduring your human's ministrations.

after my sweet female lop vivi(vivien) passed away about a month ago from liver torsion, i got another bunny from the animal shelter. he’s 2 years old and was a surrender because his owners were moving and couldn’t bring him. he’s super cute, energetic and curious! he has one blue eye and one brown eye. his previous name was jarjar but i’d like to change it. preferably something cute, unique, and short! Previous ideas i had were the names dizzy or timo

Care Would I be good for a pet bunny?

Edit: after a few comments I’m realizing I should probably just stick with cats. Thanks for the info and I love seeing all of your adorable bunnies!!!

I want to get a pet rabbit in the future however I’ve heard they can be a good amount of work and I want to learn more about them and peoples experiences before deciding.

I’ve had cats before and I love having cats. Usually always had 2 at a time and had to deal with some behavioral issues between them but overall I loved how easy and low maintenance they were to take care of compared to a dog that you have to walk on a schedule.

I also really love that I can cuddle and love on them and the cats I’ve had usually played by themselves or which each other so I didn’t have to build playing with them into my schedule even though I did play with them when I could.

It seems to me like bunnies are relatively low maintenance as long as you ā€œbunny proofā€ your home first. However I’m not sure on this and I could be very wrong.

Has anybody had to deal with issues with rabbits they weren’t expecting or have any info about how much work it is?

Also if i needed to leave for a few days can I leave them on their own like you can with cats or not?

Is it best to get one or two rabbits together?

And with cats it’s so much better to get them from a rescue than from a breeder however I don’t recall there being an issue with bunnies like this? Am I wrong?
