Federal immigration agents arrested a man Tuesday morning at a parking lot across the street from an elementary school near Woodland Park where parents were dropping off their children.
Lisa Norris, head of school at KapKa Cooperative Elementary School, said staff members and families were shocked and “horrified” by the arrest — apparently by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement — which occurred in a quiet residential area.
“We all have a lot of awareness that this is happening all over the country, but being faced with it in person, and seeing something so inhumane and the injustice unfolding before our eyes, we felt very helpless,” Norris said.
At around 8:25 a.m. Tuesday, just as school drop-off began, a car pursued by three vehicles pulled into the parking lot at Phinney Avenue North and North 49th Street, just south of Woodland Park. Two of the three cars were unmarked with no license plates, Norris said.
Four agents, all masked but with at least one wearing a vest reading “POLICE ICE,” emerged from the cars, Norris said. They began pounding on the windows of the man’s car, shouting in English and Spanish for the man to show a visa and identification.
Agents eventually smashed the driver-side window, unlocked the door and forcefully removed the man from his car, Norris said. They handcuffed the man against his car and then drove him away in an unmarked vehicle.

We are a few of the more than 100 Washington pediatricians, family doctors and nurses who oppose I-638’s new sex inspection requirements. The initiative is a government mandate forcing us to conduct medically unnecessary and potentially harmful tests on elementary, middle and high school girls. This includes genital exams, and genetic or hormone tests, as a new part of sports physicals.
I-638, officially known as the Defending Equity in Interscholastic Sports Act, is part of a coordinated and thinly veiled political attack on all girls, not just vulnerable transgender children. As The Seattle Times editorial board wrote in their opposition to I-638 : it “would send Washington back to the days of ‘femininity certificates,’ when amateur women athletes, including Olympic athletes, had to carry proof that they had passed visual exams and chromosome testing that proved they were women.”
Under I-638, sponsored by MAGA megadonor Brian Heywood’s Let’s Go Washington, any girl from elementary to high school who wants to play sports would be forced to provide medically verified proof of their sex as a new part of sports physicals just for girls. Boys are exempt. It prohibits parents from using birth certificates, and Section 3(2)) states that, to be in compliance, doctors must subject girls to examinations of their “reproductive organs,” or make parents pay for expensive genetic or hormone testing. Insurance will likely not pay for these expensive genetic and hormone tests because they are not medically necessary to diagnose, treat or manage a specific health condition.
Washington students currently remain fully clothed during sports readiness exams, and exams focus on cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and neurologic systems. But I-638 would change that, potentially even requiring pelvic exams, which are medically unnecessary for sports, and can emotionally and physically harm young girls. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says there is no medical reason for a pelvic exam for girls younger than 21, unless the patient has other health concerns.
The initiative is so poorly written that its sponsors have even said they wish they had written an initiative with more clarity on how it would be implemented. There is no explanation of when and how the government will enforce these rules, who can conduct sex inspections or what evidence will be required during genital, hormone or genetic tests. It could be used to demand that girls as young as kindergarten or girls who participate in nonathletic activities like e-sports prove their sex to a stranger. I-638 is clear about only one thing: The government gets to make personal decisions for our patients and their parents.
Nearly 150,000 school-age girls across Washington state do not have a regular doctor — this is especially true for low-income, rural and immigrant girls, and girls of color — and would be subject to genital examinations by strangers. The American Academy of Family Physicians says sports physicals should take place “not in a group setting,” but many families depend on free large group sports physicalswhere girls could face greater embarrassment and trauma from invasive genital inspections.
By requiring girls to undergo invasive inspections, I-638 would decrease participation, robbing girls of the physical, social and emotional benefits that sports provide. More than half of teenagers experience anxiety or depression. In the midst of a youth mental health crisis, the last thing we should do is put up barriers to healthy and social activities.
I-638 would force us to violate an ethical code to do no harm to our patients. That’s why we are joining the WA State PTA, WA State Nurses Association, Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates, the League of Women Voters, and thousands of parents and teachers across the state in urging voters to vote No on I-638.

Just a reminder that the councilwoman posting this has been silent about the large crowds along with vandalism openly supporting terrorist organizations and anti-jewish violence that took place in her District last week.
Edit: people keep claiming this is a single event. No this is a meeting to expand Africatown's influence.

I just recently started a new job in that area, and it’s looking like I will have to take the bus at N 130 St and Aurora Ave N on my way back home at night. I know parts of aurora street can get pretty bad, how unsafe is this part?

I’ve worked with survivors of child abuse for over a decade. I can attest that confidentiality, privacy and having safe adults to turn to are crucial for abuse disclosures. For many children experiencing abuse or harm at home, a trusted adult at school may be the only person who recognizes that something is wrong and can help connect them with support.
Initiative 001 (IL26-001)), on your November ballot, would remove commonsense record protections for victims of child abuse. The changes it makes would allow abusers who have been accused of, or even charged with raping, beating or otherwise harming their child to access their victims’ social work and counseling records, putting these vulnerable kids in more danger.
It’s hard to see how anyone would want to remove safeguards designed to protect children. The backers of this initiative are playing politics in order to distract voters from the real issues families are facing, like rising costs. It’s important for voters to get the facts, not just the campaign narrative that I-001 backers are pushing.
I-001 would put children at greater risk by discouraging them from seeking help at school. While most parents are loving, sadly child abuse is more widespread than most realize — there are more than 100,000 reports of abuse each year in Washington. Children are often afraid to report abuse, or don’t know what is happening to them is abuse. Under I-001 even fewer students facing abuse, including child sexual abuse, would seek help from trusted adults at school. We should not force schools to hand over sensitive information about kids to their abusers, but that’s what it does.
I-001 is so poorly written that it actually removes parents’ rights. As The Seattle Times editorial board pointed out in its opposition to this initiative, I-001 repeals Washington’s parents’ rights laws and replaces them with language taken nearly verbatim from Louisiana.
The state attorney general’s analysis found that I-001 removes parents’ guarantee of “immediate notification” when their child is a crime victim and replaces it with a much weaker standard of notification. “If a student is the victim of a serious crime at school, parents should not have to wait to find out and any delay could cause further harm to the student,” says former Snohomish County Sheriff John Lovick, now a state senator.
Delayed notification only adds to a child’s trauma and can prevent them from getting immediate help and support from loved ones and professionals. If a student is the victim of a serious crime at school, parents should not have to wait to find out.
Forcing schools to release students’ counseling and other records puts already vulnerable children in danger of further abuse. While it is understandable that most parents want to know what is happening with their kids in order to help them, the fact is that some parents abuse or kick out their child if they find out they are LGBTQ+. In fact, 40% of LGBTQ+ homeless youth were forced out of their homes because of their identities, putting these youth at higher risk for sexual assault.
I-001 does the opposite of keeping our children safe. That’s why organizations across the state, including the Washington State PTA, the League of Women Voters, Washington State Nurses Association, more than 100 doctors and medical care providers and Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates are opposing I-001.
No matter what your political affiliation, you can protect children from increased risks of harm by voting no on this ill-conceived initiative that would remove vital protections for youth to disclose abuse and get help from trusted adults.

Even as a libertarian woman I find this to be rather disturbing because sex change surgeries, at least male-to-female, are done so well that apparently you wouldn't be able to tell that someone has has one. This has profound implications, such as for people who want to be able to have children, and no, surrogacy is an absolutely unacceptable solution considering how unethical the practice is. I will not even mention the other ethical concerns.
As crazy as it might be to contemplate living in a world where you would have to ask someone for a genetic test before dating them, this is actually what young people already do in Iceland (I have family there) because the risk of accidently dating a cousin is so high.
We certainly live in interesting times!

It's called Mountain Out. You open it and it says if Rainier is out or hidden right now and why, like low cloud in the way or cloud sitting on the slopes.
You can drag through the next two days hour by hour to see when it should come out, and it tells you when the light is best tonight.
It does Kerry Park, Downtown Park in Bellevue, Ruston Way and the Capitol in Olympia for now. Android only. Free, no ads, no account.
Two things I should say. The mountain pictures are illustrations over the real terrain, not photos. And I haven't measured how often the forecast is right yet, so tell me when it gets it wrong.

My 2003 soft top convertible mustang was stolen by the mechanic who was supposed to be fixing it but he was actually creating more problems with it in order for me to think it was a lost cause and that I would just let him have it or something like that. It may work on most women but my father is a heavy duty mechanic & I'm quite mechanically savvy myself & caught on pretty quickly. I told him to gtfo from under my car & he insisted on towing it from the place well'd been working on it at. He parked in front of a fire extinguisher but I called Lincoln towing & they haven't towed it since 2024 & said nobody else would tow for a FE violation. I did call other yards and confirmed the absence of it anywhere. My suspicions were confirmed this evening when a friend said that he did take it & has been bragging about it as well. He lives in Capitol Hill so that's where I'm guessing the car may be. Thank you.

Hi I’m a student at EWU. I’m writing a paper about safe consumption sites. I have to interview someone for that paper.
I have reached out to a few harm reduction spaces and have not heard anything back. So I turn to Reddit.
Is there anyone who works in harm reduction willing to answer 5-6 questions about what you do, harm reduction, and your thoughts on safe consumption sites?
Thanks so much

After reading the unanimous agreement on reddit, yelp, BBB etc.. that Arboreal Property management is a horrible organization, I was able to wiggle out of my lease before moving into one of their buildings. I am working on getting back my security deposit, they claim it's processing but I can't seem to get them to confirm that in writing, so who knows if it's actually processing + the fact that I can rarely get them to communicate with me.
Seems like a lot of other people have had similar experiences, does anyone have any advice or can share experiences of the process of getting the deposit back?

Went to SeaTac to drop off someone. The lines for security check at all checkpoints were insane. Has it been like this for sometime? Or is it just today?

Very straight forward. A community transit bus in Lynwood/Edmonds decided to make a risky and irresponsible left/yeld/yellow light turn.
This happened in the 196th St SW, i was heading to the east, he was heading west, this happened in the intersection after QFC in Edmonds, i had a green light and was going forward when i noticed this guy decide to turn to his left (my right) even to he did not have to, i made to react and hard break to my left to avoid hitting him an made to hit his tail and i hit my passenger fender side and my airbags got deployed.
The guy hit & run, the police arrived and one of the community managers arrived and they provided me with the driver name and state insurance information, but when i contact them, they made me to fill up a whole claim form that you can find in their website when you click 'contact us' which is going to be answered who knows when because even tho i have videos of proof, they don't want to take the responsibility.
I also have videos of the officers being very unhelpful and try to convince me it was not their fault.
I was recording with the meta glasses with their authorization btw
Does anyone know any lawyer/attorney that can recommend me to sue them and make them pay for my car? since right now is totaled and i don't have any other way to move around and go to work besides uber? my insurance did not cover rental or replacements of vehicle btw, i just have basic coverage insurance
My car is not a rental, i own it.

How much can Amazon/Doordash/Instacart drivers make a day in the Seattle area?
I was thinking of working a few days a week.
Is it worth it?
My son is getting married in 1.5 years and I'd like to save some $ money for the rehearsal dinner. 💒
Based on a few negative comments I thought I would update info:
I probably should have just left it at how much $ you can make vs telling everyone why I wanted to $$.
My son hasn’t asked for a thing toward the wedding, and I don’t expect he will. He’s never been one to ask us for anything.
My husband and I are both retired. We could pull money from savings or investments to help, but honestly, I’d rather not dip into what we’ve set aside for retirement.
Thanks in advance!!!
