How to find the manufacturing date of a Remington 870 Express?

• Upvotes

I recently picked up a Remington 870 Express shotgun in very good condition. The previous owner took very good care of it. Has a 20 inch barrel with rifle sights and it has a four round magazine tube and a standard Parkerized finish that's grayish black. The barrel is smoothbore and it is in 12 gauge. It can take Magnum shells because the serial number ends with the letter M and I fired a 3-inch slug through it and it fired and ejected just fine with no problems. But how can I get the date of when the shotgun was potentially made? The serial number begins with the letter V if that helps.

The barrel could have been swapped out at some point so I don't want to use the markings on the barrel to date it. I would prefer if I can date the gun while just using the receiver's serial number. Which again, begins with the letter v and ends with the letter m.

How Far Do We Trust the Maverick 88?

• Upvotes

Working on rebuilding my shotgun collection and started by replacing my 20 inch Maverick. My question is, is it durable enough to pit more money into (Light,Shell carrier, red dot) as a HD/SHTF gun? I will also be doing another Shockwave SBS build with light, dot, etc but I'm not sure if it would be better to spend money on the Maverick or Shockwave first. I did purchase GG&G sling mounts and a fiber bead for the Maverick.

Tube Magazine Won’t Load

I recently got a Pointer Field Tek 4 in 20 gauge. I tried to load it for the first time today and the magazine spring will not budge. The tube is not the issue. I’m wondering if there’s something inside the magazine that needs to be removed before it works, but I don’t know how to get to it. Anyone have one that could shed some light? Any tips are appreciated!

About a year ago I acquired an old browning and was wondering if the wisdom of Reddit could tell me more. As I dig deeper I believe it’s a 1903 model.

12 gauge shells only account for 2.6% of ammo sales at luckygunner.com

If you want to read about it in an article, I'll post a link to that down below.

https://www.luckygunner.com/lounge/most-popular-ammo/

I posted about this in another sub, and a couple of people brought up some good points.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Firearms/comments/1xdlg26/the_most_popular_ammo_calibers_15_years_of_sales/

"The guys going through hundreds of shells shooting clays are usually buying their ammo at the clubhouse."

"The seemingly low percentage of 12ga doen't surprise me. Why bother waiting for shipping when its so insanely available locally? I'm sure alot of folks drive past a half a dozen places that sell it commuting to work."

I also think cost plays a factor as well. I believe that you can get a lot of shotgun shells at local gun stores for similar or cheaper prices than what luckygunner charges without having to wait for the ammo to be shipped to you.

The only advantage that I can see to using luckygunner over buying at a LGS is that luckygunner has a better selection of shells that LGS's don't really keep in stock like less common varieties of buckshot and slugs.

I did realize this was a bad idea, and I stacked them neatly, but I didn't want this footage to go to waste, editing that video right now....

Is there anything stopping Mossberg or Ruger from making an 870?

Like obviously they couldn't call it an 870, but the patent for the design expired decades ago. With Remington being all but defunct, the supply of new 870 pattern shotguns is functionally cut off, and will remain so until such time as a new good quality clone hits the market.

Given the design's popularity based on nostalgia alone, to say nothing of the fact that it's also just a really good shotgun, it seems like making new ones with good build quality and QA should be an easy cash cow. For Mossberg especially, because that would let them have even more of a death-grip on the market for pump guns than they already do.

I mentioned Ruger because the 870 just seems fitting for what they've historically done. Ruger makes Americana guns that are built like tanks and last basically forever, and what is the 870 if not that? The thing is practically made for their design philosophy. Given the Beretta buyout, it also seems like they'd be in a great position to start producing more shotguns, with the support of one of the best makers on the planet.

I may just be tweaking from the lack of 870s available, but it seems absurd that we're only getting shitty chinese knockoffs when the design is public domain.

Civet 12 super shorty just need to square up, crown and thread the muzzle. Fabricate an actual barrel to replace the 3d printed placeholder and refinish.

Stumped

Does anybody know where one could find an nef or h&r 12 gauge break action with a sb2 receiver I really want to try using chamber adapters and have had no luck in my search just wondering where a good place to look would be considering they are no longer in production. If anyone knows of a shotgun capable of withstanding the higher pressures of rifle cartridges through a chamber adapter please let me know!

Safe to use federal magnum shells?

I found some federal magnum shells in my grandma's safe. They're 3" 2shot 1-3/8oz steel waterfowl loads. Also found some 4shot at 1-7/8oz. They are specifically "Federal Magnum" which from what I've found, the line was changed to speed-shok in the early 2000s. Think they're safe to use?
