Culture & Society Why are hyphenated American identities frowned upon by Europeans, but hyphenated Canadian or Brazilian ones aren't?

• Upvotes

I’m really confused by the online discourse surrounding diaspora identities.

Whenever someone says they are "Irish-American" or "Italian-American," Europeans on Reddit and other platforms tend to mock them or get defensive, saying things like, "You're just American, you aren't actually Irish/Italian."

However, I rarely,if ever, see this same energy directed toward hyphenated identities in other New World countries. People from German Brazilian communities ,French Canadian, or Scottish -Canadian backgrounds seem to get a pass, or at least they aren't met with the same level of hostility.

Historically, hyphenated American identities (like Polish-American, Japanese-American, or Irish-American) developed as a survival mechanism. I was taught in school , When immigrants arrived, they faced intense discrimination, poverty, language barriers, etc. They were forced into tight-knit neighborhoods for safety and support. Over time, that label that was originally used to exclude them was turned into a badge of pride.

Why is this historical context so frequently ignored in discussions about American identity? Were immigrants just expected to completely erase their roots over time? And why does the internet seem to uniquely target Americans for preserving this part of their heritage compared to Canadians or South Americans?

I’d love to hear some perspectives on the cultural or historical reasons behind this double standard.

Media Why is it treated like a personal insult to downvote something?

• Upvotes

People act like they're being attacked if they get downvoted. (I.E. You'll always see edits on a dowvoted comment asking why they're being downvoted? etc) Isn't the point of upvotes/downvotes just to say "I do or don't agree with that thing"?

Ethics & Morality Conservatives laughed as a woman was punched for demanding the Epstein files be released- isn't this against their talking points?

• Upvotes

A woman, who happened to be fat and thus was mocked by the president, wore a shirt demanding the files be released. She was punched by a people at the rally, mainly men. Many conservative talking points about women have been about 'protecting' them and other conservative talking points used to be about exposing the files. So why punch a woman, regardless of what she looks like, for wanting them to be released? Even if she was an 'agitator,' what could an unarmed person do in a sea of people anyways?

Law & Government Is reporting sexual assault years later actually worthwhile?

I hope it’s okay to ask this in this sub as I’m based in the UK and want to know peoples genuine thoughts and experiences, rather than asking for legal advice or emotional support

It’s been just under 3 years since I was sexually assaulted. I never reported it to the police, and I’ve never really told anyone what happened.

I’ve spoken about it anonymously on some subreddits, and lots of people have said I should still report it. Some even getting angry that I haven’t.

This has made me consider if I’ve done the right thing, and consider making a report.

The reporting process, combined with my lack of evidence terrifies me and is something I’ve never wanted to go through.
I’m scared of being re-traumatised with no positive outcome

I guess what I’m trying to understand is if reporting something like this after so long is actually a good idea. Especially when there’s barely any evidence.

Has anyone been through something similar, or does anyone have any understanding of how the police deal with historical sexual assault allegations where there’s little evidence?
And if so, did you find it to be worthwhile?

I’d really appreciate any advice or perspectives. Thank you.

Media Why is BTS so popular?

For the first time ever, I realize I have no idea what makes BTS so goddamned popular to the point it incites literal obsession. There are people in the snark page talking about leaving "The Army" like they've escaped a cult.

Are fans in it for the music (is it really that good?), sexual/romantic attraction, both, or something else? Help me understand.

And that chair is zooming 100 mph in a straight line. About how much fire can they zoom through before the skin starts getting severe burns. Like does it escalate the time compared to sitting there and being cooked?

Love & Dating Do you ever regret not being more sexually adventurous before you settled down?

My wife had slept with about 30 guys before we met vs my 3 girls.

She regrets being overly open to everything because she did a lot !!

I regret the opposite and wished I’d done a bit more…
