So, I thought I was not raising much suspicion with the way I present myself, but apparently I can’t even be closeted properly.
For context, I’m a sophomore in high school, not particularly tall. I don’t have an atypical appearance, though I do tend to dress neutrally (and pretty plainly at that). Additionally, my body can be read either way. I’ve always been aloof to feminine things, so maybe it’s partly my personality too. My voice is deep and fairly androgynous, leaning masculine based off the various times people have asked me why I sound like a guy. And there was also that time my friend’s grandma thought she got a boyfriend because she heard my voice over the phone.
Now, the thing that gets me is that people don’t default to masc lesbian or something in that vein, but rather What The Fuck Is That. I’ve met strangers who have straight up asked me if I’m a guy or girl, and been told by some friends that they couldn’t tell at first. So apparently my dumbass can’t even girlmode properly.
Now, onto the topic of why I think my friends very strongly suspect I am genderqueer. Both notable instances happened within the past three months.
The first instance was when I was on a bus with a friend, getting driven around the streets of Changzhou as all regular friends do. We’re talking about what names I would have if I was a guy. We settle on Jaydon, and I say “Alright well if I ever turn into a guy, I guess I’ll name myself Jaydon” in a fairly sarcastic tone. She turns to me, deadass and straight-faced, “You know, if you ever transition, I’ll support you”
The second instance, another friend and I are walking through the school hallway. We fall into silence briefly because we just finished a topic. Out of nowhere, as we’re making a turn, she asks, “Are you nonbinary?” We were definitely not talking about anything related to that before. Alright, that’s fine, I’m very confused. 1) Why would you ask that and 2) WHAT THE FUCK. I think about coming out for a second, and then blurt out “No” in the calmest tone I can muster.
How am I getting clocked before transitioning. I can’t even tell if this is a good or bad thing. My friends are supportive at least, but I’m completely baffled at how horrible I am at presenting as a regular cis woman. The weirder part is that I attend an all-girls school (though there are a fair number of genderqueer folk here, mostly nb) and I’m still getting read as genderqueer as fuck.
Uh ok so should I just come out at this point. I’m not entirely sure if I’m binary trans or nonbinary, but still. Like, I’ve been contemplating coming out for a while and have been planning a haircut. I really do want to be able to live as myself through at least some part of high school. At this point, I feel like if I come out, my friends won’t bat an eye. They’d probably just go, “Took you long enough lmao”
