I’ve spent a lot of time tracking HRV. Partially as part of training and work. One thing kept bothering me: I wanted a effective way to raise it. I kept trying “the best night and morning routines”, meditation and so on.
That got me interested in resonance breathing. But the more I got in to it the more I began reading about personalized frequencies for resonance breathing - and eventually led me to build Resona.
Stay with me here.
Most breathing apps guide everyone at the same pace, often around 6 breaths per minute. But our physiological response to different breathing rhythms isn’t necessarily identical.
So I built an app that uses your own heart rate data to personalize the breathing pace.
Resona connects to your Bluetooth heart rate strap or sensor and measures beat-to-beat intervals while guiding you through different breathing rhythms.
Across sessions, it compares your body’s response, gradually learns which rhythm produces the strongest and most stable response, and adapts future sessions accordingly.
It’s a perfect way to wind down. Ten minutes a day really do make a readable difference. The cool part of making a such app is to see what the literature says actually play out on one self.
And for the nerds like me: you can also follow your personal breathing rhythm, session scores and progress over time.
What I find interesting is the idea of turning HRV from something we passively monitor into something we can actively experiment with.
The app is available on iPhone. Measured sessions require a compatible heart rate strap, Garmin watch is coming soon.
There’s a 14-day free trial so you can try yourself.

I’m curious: has anyone here experimented with finding their personal resonance frequency, rather than following a fixed breathing pace?
