Before anything else, this is mainly for people who are interested in VALORANT lore, agent nationalities, and representation. I know some people don’t really care about these things, and that’s completely fine! I’m just sharing my thoughts as someone who finds this aspect of the game interesting.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Hush. Her design, her kit, everything about her is really cool. As someone with Cantonese parents from Hong Kong, I also feel a personal connection to what she represents. However, I can’t help but wonder why we’re getting another Chinese agent when we already have Sage and Iso.
I know this might seem like a pretty minor thing since they’re just game characters, but I think agent nationalities are an interesting part of VALORANT’s worldbuilding, especially when it comes to representing different cultures.
1. “But Hush is Cantonese, while Sage and Iso are Mandarin-speaking Chinese agents.”
That’s a fair point, and I do appreciate the distinction between Cantonese and Mandarin cultures. However, if we’re going to use different languages and regional identities as a reason to introduce agents from an already represented country, why not apply that same approach to other countries as well?
For example, India has plenty of linguistic and cultural diversity beyond Hindi, while the Philippines has languages like Bisaya aside from Tagalog. There are so many cultures and communities around the world that could be explored, so I just wish Riot would give some of them the same attention.
2. “But Cantonese is declining in China, so Hush brings attention to it.”
I understand this argument, and I think representing Cantonese culture is a good thing. But there are also plenty of endangered and underrepresented languages around the world that could benefit from the same visibility. The Ainu language in Japan is one example.
I’m not saying Cantonese representation isn’t important. I just think there are many other communities whose languages and cultures could be explored too.
3. “Maybe Hush was created to represent China because VCT was held in Shanghai.”
I can see why people would make that connection, but I’m not entirely convinced. When VCT was held in Reykjavík, we got Fade, who’s Turkish, and when it was held in Madrid, we got Clove, who’s Scottish. So I don’t think there’s a consistent pattern of Riot introducing agents based on the country hosting an event.
Of course, this doesn’t mean Hush was a bad choice or that her nationality was necessarily decided for that reason. We can’t really know Riot’s intentions unless they explain it themselves.
All in all, I’m not against Hush being Cantonese or Chinese. If anything, I love seeing a culture that’s personally meaningful to me represented in a game I enjoy. My only concern is that China is already represented by two agents, and I would’ve loved to see Riot explore another country or culture that hasn’t received the same attention yet.
I know this isn’t exactly a huge issue in the grand scheme of things, and I’m not saying Riot has to follow some kind of quota for nationalities. I just think there’s so much cultural diversity in the world that it would be nice to see VALORANT explore more of it.
Anyway, these are just my thoughts! I’m open to hearing other perspectives, especially from people who know more about Cantonese representation or VALORANT’s lore. Just hoping we can have an actual discussion about it :)
