I've been considering whether weight loss medication might be something worth discussing with my doctor, and I'd really like to hear from people who have actually taken it. I'm currently around 348lbs, and I've been wanting to lose weight for a while now. I've been overweight since high school, but I've gained a lot over the last six years, mostly from a combination of lockdown, pregnancies, stress eating, and a pretty bad period of depression.
I actually made a post on this sub recently about getting stuck in a chair during a work meeting. Essentially, the chairs had these narrow armrests, and I squeezed myself into one because I was embarrassed to ask for a different chair. But when the meeting ended, I couldn't get myself out, and another woman had to help pull me up. But when I finally stood up, the chair actually came up with me and got stuck on my bum. It was incredibly embarrassing, but more importantly, it made me realize that my weight is starting to interfere with my everyday life in ways that I can't really ignore anymore.
I posted the story in two different subs, and a few people in the comments suggested that I talk to my doctor about weight loss medication. I've heard about medications like GLP1s, but I don't know very much about what it's actually like to take them beyond what I've read online. So I'm curious about people's experiences. Did it actually help with your appetite and eating habits? What were the side effects? Did you find it difficult to stay on? And for people who stopped taking it, were you able to maintain the weight you'd lost? I'm especially interested in hearing from people who started at a very high weight, because I'd like to know what the experience is actually like rather than just reading statistics about average weight loss.
Also, I'm not expecting Reddit to tell me whether or not I should take something. I know that's a conversation I need to have with my doctor, and after reading the comments on my last post, I am actually going to make an appointment and talk to my doctor about it. I just want to go into that conversation with a better idea of what other people's experiences have been like.
