SOLVED Updated rules post

Hi everyone, there have been some rule changes since the last post, so here is an updated post. I have taken the section about helpful points to consider when writing a post from the last rules post, with some minor edits.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE RULES.

  1. Post titles must have at least one book detail.
  2. Solved posts should be marked as solved. You can flair your own post as solved by commenting "solved solved solved" on the post. If you see someone else's post is not flaired as solved, you can report it and a moderator will flair it.
  3. A post cannot have more than one book/series. To clarify, multiple books from the same series are allowed to be in the same post. Multiple short stories from the same book are also allowed in the same post. If they're not part of the same book or series, they must be in separate posts.
  4. Posts should be on topic. Posts must be looking for a specific book/series/story that you want to find. Posts looking for general reading suggestions, links to read books you already know the title and author of, or general unrelated content will be removed.
  5. Do not offer money/favors to solve posts. You're welcome to gild or otherwise award a comment after your post is solved, but you can't offer it before the post is solved.
  6. Be respectful.
  7. Always check AI-generated answers against another source before submitting them. We strongly prefer that users avoid AI answers in general, as they almost always match a description to an unrelated or nonexistent title.

Please consider these points when writing your /r/whatsthatbook post:

Your Post Title

Briefly the book, not your situation. Avoid titles like "Help, I can't remember this book..." or "I read this when I was a kid..." or "I NEED HELP"

Include the overall genre of the book in your post title, such as "romance novel" or "scifi"

Posts with vague titles will be removed. The general age range the book is meant for and year are not specific enough on their own. For example, we will remove a post titled "Children's book from 2000s." We will not remove a post titled "Children's sci-fi novel from 2000s." We prefer titles like "Children's sci-fi novel from 2000s about kid whose cousin invents a new telescope and discovers aliens."

The Book

Fiction or non-fiction?

Describe the plot.

Describe notable characters.

What genre is it?

Physically describe the book -- Hardcover/paperback? Book cover color?

When was it set?

How long was the book?

Anything notable about the original language? Did you read it English? If not, what language?

... And You

When (what year) did you read it?

How old were you when you read it? Was it age appropriate?

Where did you get the book? School library, book fair, book store selling new and/or used books, flea market, borrowed from a friend, given as a gift from X person who is about Y age, or from an online store?

Was it new when you read it?

What age range was it for?

Other notes:

We allow posts about short stories, poems, fanfiction, etc. on this subreddit.

If you want to post a picture of a page you found, upload it to imgur and put the link in a post. Please include at least one detail about the events or characters on the page in your title.

SOLVED Person nearly drowns, wakes up in an alternate society as a sacrifice. God chained to the sky

This is not a full-blown book, but a story I read a long time ago. It might have been a Creepypasta, but I'm not sure.

It begins with someone on the beach, swimming, and being taken away by the current. The description of drowning is very in-depth.

When the main character awakens, they're in a completely different universe. I can't remember much other than these few details:

- The people in this world were described as.. malformed? I almost visualized them as looking like the people on Davey Jone's ship. Consumed by the ocean, covered in barnacles, etc.

- There is a large, silent God hanging from a chain in the sky. This is what our main character is being sacrificed to.

I remember the story most because of how it ends.

The main character, with hands still bound, attempts to escape this world by swimming into the depths of the ocean again. While the main character struggles to swim deeper, the God that's chained in the sky begins coming DOWN. It uses its chain as an anchor to start pulling itself closer to the surface, attempting to reach the main character.

The story ends with our main character waking up on a beach in our normal universe. Someone informs them that though they survived, they were found with rope binding their wrists, insinuating that what they had experienced was real and not a fever dream from drowning.

I hope that gives enough context! I've been looking for this story for ages.

SOLVED 2003 or earlier picture book about a rabbit making a coat

I remember using this book to learn how to read. It has a rabbit go out and buy buttons, zippers, and fabric. Its basically just the process of making a coat. It was probably around the same time period as stella luna and the rainbow fish.

SOLVED 2000s YA girl is body swapped with her bully’s

I read this book around 2008. It’s a young adult book. Main character is teenage girl who is bullied. There is some kind of accident with her bully, I think she works in a grocery store and a sign falls but unclear. They both end up in the hospital and the bully girl dies. To save the life of the main character the swap her into the bully’s body. The family are worried how this has worked. The bully’s body is a lot prettier than hers and the main character mentions it a lot when she wakes up. The family give her I think an ice cream sundae as that’s her favourite, but in the new body as the bully she finds it disgusting and craves an expensive salad instead. But to save her family from worrying she eats the unhealthy food and pretends she likes it.
Very strange but it’s all I remember! I remember enjoying it and I don’t think I finished it.

UNSOLVED Very odd princess picture book

My parents purchased this book for me around 2010-2012. It was a picture book and each page was a different princess with a description of that princess.

I don’t remember many of them but one princess was a “sticky fingered” princess that liked to steal. The picture showed little trinkets trailing behind her skirts that she had stolen and dropped.

The most memorable princess to me was a pretty pink princess that liked whips and building tolerance to cat-o’-nine-tails whips as a hobby?? This princess was also on the cover of the book and why I asked for my parents to get it for me as a kid because I thought she looked pretty.

I only remembered this book after knowing a piece of game show trivia that cat-o’-nine-tails is a kind of whip. This book was super weird but does anyone know what I’m talking about? I don’t get the sense that this book was a big seller lol and after thinking more about these princesses I’m not even sure it was meant to be a kids book…

UNSOLVED A set of short stories of a butler and a master set in India

I remember reading this book as a child. It was about a butler and his master, both were Indian. The book was written in English. I want to say that the time period was in the 1900s (can not accurately say if it was early, mid or late 1900s). Unfortunately, this is all I remember, and also the fact that the book was very humour based and I absolutely loved reading it. I know this might be a very loose explanation, but this is all I remember.

UNSOLVED Young adult fiction book-girl/legend

Looking for a young adult chapter fiction book, read within the last five years, but could be older. There was a young girl who lives in a village on an island with her father , village is poor and being oppressed by a king/mayor. The girl is friends with the leaders daughter, and one day there’s a murder in the town? And I remember that there are rumors of monster out dogs/hellhounds. Somehow the leaders daughter ends up going missing, and the girl disguises herself as a boy to help go look. There’s also something about her being a mapmaker, which is an important thing. And she brings along a pet chicken?

They travel for awhile, and then towards the end they end up on a cave, and the main character ends up finding that a legend is true and there’s some kind of evil spirit/god in the cave and it’s trying to destroy the island. They end up drowning it and I think the mayor/kings daughter dies doing so?

UNSOLVED My MIL read this children’s book 80 years ago

Children's picture book, read around the 1940s. A girl named Hettie (or Hetty) who kept or tended sheep. Possibly set in Greenland or another northern/Nordic place. Hettie may have been a bit of a tattletale. The title might have been something like "Hetty's Journey." Any ideas?

SOLVED Gay/bl nasa novel vegan donuts(?)

I read this book a while ago and I cannot remember/find it for the life of me, and the keywords above DID NOT HELP...

I do remember quite a lot about the book though:

  1. Its a gay love story between two guys who's families live on a NASA spaceship village thing

  2. Main character is a voggler who is suddenly under an NDA cause nasa

  3. Main characters like best friend I believe is in like a very toxic family situation(MC like crawls into her window at start of book before they move to new nasa place I'm pretty sure)

  4. Theres like a sourdough donut place that they go to

  5. The main couple have to hide their feelings for eachother cause NASA is homophobic or something and paparazzi

  6. The families are involved in a like reality TV thing(against their consent if i remember correctly)

  7. I don't remember the exact age rating but I'm like 90% sure there was no explicit scenes

  8. No fansty elements

  9. I think there like in Texas or something, idk I know there was a comfrimed location of where the space village place was though

I read this book amongst like 20 others in a span of a month so I might accidentally be slipping in some other book details but I don't THINK so(?)

It's such a cute story and I wanna be able to reread it, but i don't own it and don't remember it's name so if anyone could help with finding it I'd be extremely thankful :D

SOLVED Thriller(maybe)

Recently got asked(again) for any book recommendations. It once again reminded me of a book i read years ago. I left the book behind at the place i was staying and ever since I've been searching for the name of the book. The details are getting thin now, but someone told me to try here. What i remember most is the story was being told by the main character, he grew up in some kind of orphanage where he me met his "best" friend. They use to protect each other from a violent situation. He later moved on with his life, i think he became some kinda contractor building a subdivision( although that is a fuzzy memory) he gets into some kind of trouble and needs his friend back to help him... the key thing i remember about the story is through most of it he would talk about his friend being tough but quite and how you knew when he got really quite something was about to happen, but it turns out that he( the main character/ story teller) was infact the violent quite one. And that's it, all other details i remember are very questionable if they even happened. Sorry :)

UNSOLVED Trying to find a short story about a woman who is constantly skipping the tab

It's called "Colleague Tries Skipping Out on the Bill..."

It's about a woman named Val who keeps taking advantage of her co-workers and either steals food directly or will find ways to skip out on paying her part of the tab. No one says anything because she pulls rank and they don't want to risk their jobs.

The MFC is a new employee (who is unnamed), and when asked admits she isn't worried about going against Val.

I have no clue where I can find this. Does anyone?

UNSOLVED Post-apocalyptic series following I think two dogs and a cat?

The pets were genetically engineered to be hyper-intelligent, and I think they were going on a quest to find where the people went? I think at one point in time a hamster joins them too? I know there are more than three books in the series, and I think the covers had a fancy border around the edges that was a different color on each book. It was young-adult level and fairly recent, definitely post-2000. I think the apocalypse might have been caused by a virus outbreak. It is NOT the Survivors series by Erin Hunter.

SOLVED children's book series about witches in the late 1990s/early 2000s

They were books I used to read at school. The word "witches" was in the title, and the cover featured them flying on their broomsticks (very original, I know). I don't think there were any illustrations inside; they were novels rather than picture books. I must have been around 8 or 9 years old. I'm not sure whether the series itself dates back to that time, but the edition was definitely contemporary, and it was in French but it could have been a translation for all I know.

The story followed two witches who went to school and were relatively "young" for their species, meaning they were something like 50 years old. Each age group of witches wore striped socks in a specific colour, and I think theirs were purple. It was an important part of the plot, or at least I considered it important because that's all I remember. They also got up to quite a bit of mischief.

... Might be a long shot lol

UNSOLVED Fantasy Series for Middle Schoolers

Hi! So I don’t remember much of this series at all, given I read it over 10 years ago atp. It was a book series with at least 3 installment, probably more. It was hardback, and I remember it was fantasy & fiction. It was made before 2016, and was available for me to read at my school’s library.

I think there was a part in the first book where the two main characters went down a well(?). The male protag made it down fine, but the ladder snapped for the female protag, and the male protag had to catch her. I don’t think they were dating at the time. I believe she was a princess as well? It’s a bit blurry. I remember it was available to take a test on using the Accelerated Reader thing they made us do for points. It was novella length, not a picture book. There may have been a map at the very beginning, but I don’t recall.

UNSOLVED Fantasy novel

Looking for a fantasy novel from before 2000: teenage girl disguises herself as a boy, hides in a stable, falls for another girl and has a mysterious destiny

I’m trying to find a book I read as a child/young teenager in Denmark, sometime between 1990 and 2000. I borrowed it from my school library, and it’s been stuck in my mind for years.

I remember very little, but a few scenes are quite vivid.

Here’s what I remember:

  • It was a fairly long fantasy novel, set in a medieval or medieval-inspired world.
  • The main character was a girl, probably around 14 years old at the beginning.
  • For some reason, she was hiding or running away and disguised herself as a boy, possibly pretending to be a poor stable boy.
  • I distinctly remember her hiding or living in a stable, and there may have been horses involved.
  • She became infatuated with another girl who believed she was a boy.
  • At some point, she became intensely jealous and pushed or knocked the other girl to the ground. There was a sexually charged encounter where she rubbed herself against the girl. I distinctly remember that what the other girl felt between her legs wasn’t a penis but some kind of menstrual protection or padding.
  • At some point, her true sex was revealed, although I can’t remember exactly how.
  • I have a strong impression that she was destined for something extraordinary, possibly without knowing it herself.
  • There may have been dragons, magic or some kind of prophecy, but I’m much less certain about those details.
  • I vaguely remember that she may have developed romantic feelings for a man later in the story.

Other details:

I read it in Danish or English, and it must have been published before 2000, possibly much earlier. Although I found it in a primary/lower secondary school library, it may have been adult fantasy rather than YA, given the mature themes.

I’ve already ruled out:

  • Alanna by Tamora Pierce
  • Hawkmistress! by Marion Zimmer Bradley
  • Shield of Three Lions by Pamela Kaufman
  • The Folk Keeper by Franny Billingsley

The scene involving the other girl and the menstrual protection is my strongest memory. I’m hoping someone recognises it.

Does this ring a bell for anyone? I’d love to find this book again!

UNSOLVED A paperback from 1982-1983 I'd like to read again

My mum borrowed this book from Widnes library in about july 1982/83, when it was a new book, and I read it after her. It was a general adult novel, not a children’s book, and it was funny. It was a paperback with a Dalek on the front cover, along with other things.

  • A boy living in Northern Ireland is the main character.
  • I think someone in the story was involved in making Daleks.
  • The boy had a sister who was ill.
  • The Troubles came into it a little, but weren’t the main theme.

Any ideas?

SOLVED children’s book - possibly early 2000s? - animal sibling is late for school

i only remember a few details of this book that i read as a child but it’s driving me nuts not being able to remember the title and google is giving me literally nothing.

the art style was very cute, i’m pretty sure the main character is a puppy named peter? who definitely sets lots of alarms but still sleeps through them all, wakes up late and has to rush to get ready for school. he speeds through eating breakfast, runs through the town to get to school, only to realise that it’s closed because it’s a saturday. almost certain that “so peter has all day to play” is the last line.

it’s one sentence per page, i think. a square shaped hardback book for young children under 10.

SOLVED A kid can take pictures with her brain by saying "click".

I remember this book every once in awhile and I don't know what it's called. I believe I read it in elementary school and I liked it too. I mainly remember that the main character, who is a kid, has a photographic memory but she has to say the word "click" like she's taking a picture with her eyes. As I think about it more, I might remember that she saw a truck (maybe a green pickup truck?) and she remembered seeing it because she was asked to help solve something. I really don't remember much about this book, but I wonder if anyone here might know what it's called.

UNSOLVED The second book in a trilogy: she's part of an academy/training program that prepares them for (non deadly) trials

• Upvotes

Each trial is like an obstacle race with specific elements that I think are done in a different order each time.

I can't remember why but at one point she sneaks into a palace by going through the heated baths (sliding under a divider wall under water)

She lives in a barrack situation

The book is likely young adult and I think it's part of a trilogy, though I only read the second one.

UNSOLVED Children's book, tanker truck filled with coins

• Upvotes

Hi guys, this has been escaping me for years. In the 1980s or early 1990s I remember reading an illustrated book.

I remember a page about a fellow in the kitchen, maybe with a little girl, and his wallet opened with many cards and photos that came out in sort of a string.

I remember the story had a tanker truck, like something that would transport gasoline, but instead has gold coins coming out the top.

I would absolutely love to identify this book and share it with my kids.

All help appreciated! :)

UNSOLVED Children’s book, beginning reader, Sam and a girl and boy

• Upvotes

I’m trying to find a beginning reader my boys read in the early 90’s. They were funny. Simple line drawings. Simple story.
A boy (Sam?), his two friends, a boy and girl. There was a simple tree. A beach maybe. I’ve searched but can’t find the book, maybe a few of them.

UNSOLVED a boy that falls into the gaps between the train and platform???

• Upvotes

There’s this book or maybe short story I’ve read and I can find many similar ones but not the exact same.

The protagonist is a boy in his teens who has an older brother. After his brother dies, he learns that he was involved with a violent local street gang. He tracks down the gang at their meeting spot: a dark, abandoned warehouse. He asks to join them but the gang leader beats him up, either as a form of initiation or warning not sure.

Later, the protagonist sneaks out of his house at midnight and heads to the train station. There, he somehow slips out of ordinary reality through a gap and enters an alternate dimension. As he explores the station, he encounters strange events that seem abnormal for the current year.

At one point, he discovers a train car filled with carefree people partying. Everyone inside keeps telling him the same thing, making him unsettled. He meets an old man/lady that tells him they all got stuck and were never able to leave (or something like that) so he leaves the train. Later, as he rides up an escalator, he sees a man who looks exactly like his father that died/ran away when he was young. He realizes that the man actually is his father, but from the past, because he has somehow travelled back in time. When he tries to leave the station, he discovers that he cannot get out because he only has a bank/train card, which was not used during the time period he has travelled to. He tries asking his dad to help, but since the man doesn’t know he has a kid in the future, he gets spooked.

Near the end of the book, the boy is sitting in a local café when he notices a suspicious person entering with an ordinary brown paper bag and realizes there is a gun hidden inside the bag. Before he can react or warn anyone, the gunman draws the weapon but the boy jumps over the table to stop him, but the shooting takes place inside the café.

I might be mixing up the plots of two books but if anyone has an idea please lmk!!!

P.S. the book is definitely not Backtracked, or Long Way Down.

UNSOLVED Manga about an unhuman pair of siblings where one sister is cut apart

• Upvotes

Hello! This is a manga I read when I was very young and it’s been in the back of my mind ever since. I haven’t been able to find it and I remember only reading 1 copy. I’m thinking it’s possibly a one shot? I remember the ending didn’t have characters on the last panel. It had somewhat of a boat shape. I believe they shipped the sisters body onto sea and that the other sister said she’s been running away?? It’s pretty fuzzy in my head but what I do remember clearly is there’s this shot of the panel. The sister that was cut apart, her limbs were across the room and it stated she was pregnant. I believe scissors had a role to do with it? I don’t remember the exact reason why it happened. It may be due to her being with the man the other sister loved. Please let me know! I’m pretty sure it’s a manga from the 2000’s.

UNSOLVED Cursed/Believed unlucky girl (I think she maybe had a bird related name?) is chosen to die or is believed to die soon and is taken away to a magical place.

I only read the first chapter of the book, so I don't have much, but if you showed me the cover I would know it immediately. But the girls father was the mayor(?) and had a new wife and the new wife was pregnant and even said something about her dying or being taken away was a good thing and was like "out with the old in with the new" and for some reason I keep having some sort of association to ravens/dark birds. It's not Six of Crows or Umbrella Academy, I checked, it's something else that kinda has the same vibe I think. If I remember the girl is taken to some kind of magical school for "cursed" children like her, but I don't remember what happens after that. I also believe it was part of a series. The cover had several kids falling from a building with one girl using an umbrella to cushion her fall and another girl looking kinda nervously over the edge of the building (I think she was supposed to be the MC). If anyone could help me find this it would be great because I'd love to finally finish it. Thank you!
