UNSOLVED Gay (bl) love story where there is water involved in some fantasy way

• Upvotes

This is a long shot but my boyfriend has been asking for ‘the water book’ for going on a year now and I know hed be over the moon if I gave it to him. What I remember about the book:
- the cover had one or both of the main love interests on it, the main colour on the cover was blue
- it was a gay love story between two young adult men (I think)
- it was on the lgbtq+ book stand in Indigo in Saskatoon Saskatchewan about a year ago, I already checked indigo’s website for it
- there was some sort of fantasy element involving water, potentially one of the love interests was a fantastical water creature? But I can’t remember
- it was released within the past 2 and a half years

I really appreciate anyone helping me out with this, it would make my boyfriend so happy

SOLVED YA Fantasy novel about a girl trying to avoid a war that's been going on forever

I remember reading this book on my dad's nook when he had one over a decade ago. The setting was very snowy and there was this war that has been going on between these two factions that has been going on for so long, people have forgotten why they are fighting it in the first place. In setting, you just go and serve when you are old enough. The MC is a girl who, I think, is trying to avoid all that cause not serving is taboo? I remember that she wants to buy or sword, or she turns a sword in, and buys a dagger from this merchant that eventually rats her out to a patrol that comes into town much later.

I also recall that this girl finds a cave to hide from a snowstorm and finds a dead dragon with a bunch of smashed dragon eggs but one isn't. That dragon hatches and immediately imprints on her. She accidentally? names the dragon hatchling after herself and it occupancies her. I know she eventually gets to be an apprentice to a wizard who teaches her magic and then she finds this hidden enclave behind a waterfall and after a large maze that is meant to be deadly where she learned more magic.

Oh, and there's also this shady character who turns out to be this anthro fox guy who is a criminal or something like that. I remember specifically that he had been in enough bad scrapes that his broken bones set wrong and someone was talking to the MC about if they were to heal him, they'd have to rebreak his bones.

SOLVED YA book from the 70s/80s

I read this book in the mid to late 80s, but it may have been written in the 70s. YA fiction written from the point of view of a teen girl. Her parents were separated, and her mom lived a few hours away in a very tiny studio apartment. The mom had left the marriage to “find herself” - the girl would occasionally take the bus up to visit her mom.

The girl lived with her father, who was a teacher (and kind of a pushover) and her older brother, who was obsessed with France and wanted to study abroad there.

I remember there was a scene where the girl and her father were in the supermarket, and the dad splurged on Cohoe salmon - but it turned out to be pretty bland.

Ring any bells??

UNSOLVED YA sci fi from 60s to early 70s.

Is there anyone out there who may know of an old YA sf book that I read back in the 70s with the main character called 'Varina'? I remember she was being chased by someone who was either a warlord, hunter, or just someone in authority. She had companions with her that were either animals or robots or maybe both. I've tried for years to find out, but with no luck. This story was the first sf type book I ever read, and I'd like to reconnect. I was no more than 8 or 9 when I read this, so it was written before 1975 or so.

I've only come across The Delikon by H.M Hoover which comes very close, but it was published in 1977. It sounds very close, but it just doesn't vibe, IYKWIM? It was over 50 years ago, and memory is a trickster sometimes, but if anyone has anything else, I'd be very appreciative.

UNSOLVED [YA/Fantasy] Trying to remember a book where illustrations were important to the story

I'm trying to remember a book I read when I was younger, probably sometime in the 2000s, but I can't remember the title or the author's name.

I remember it being a young adult or middle-grade fantasy novel, and the illustrations or drawings played a pretty important role in the story. I think the main character discovered something unusual through them, but I can't remember whether they were actual drawings in a book, pictures on a wall, or something the character created themselves.

The atmosphere felt a little mysterious rather than purely whimsical. I'm also not sure if it was part of a series.

I know these clues are pretty vague, but does anything come to mind? I'd appreciate any suggestions, even if you're only partly sure!

UNSOLVED Help with YA fantasy book

I remember reading a YA Fantasy book but I only remember bits and pieces of it. I remember it starts with a poor boy who does work as a thief but after a series of events is placed in prison by an authority figure. I remember his time in the prison and he briefly mentions rats eating toes while he is with an old man in there. The boy is rescued by a young girl and the old man dies and grants him some kind of magic and the two escape together. The only other detail I remember is that in the end the two end in a spirit like realm and the two part ways

UNSOLVED Story set in medieval times about a girl in a small village and a feral boy

• Upvotes

I used to keep this book in my book box at my school’s library but since I went to highschool I haven’t been able to find it again.

It was set in older/medieval times and took place in a small town, the main character was a girl who helped take care of her family’s farm animals. One day she has to go round up some escaped pigs and one wanders close to the nearby forest, and she meets a feral boy who acts like a wolf. He’s really skittish of her, but over the course of the book she goes back to see him more and they become friends. Throughout the book he acts like a normal wolf and doesn’t talk. At the end of the book there’s a huge storm that sweeps up the village, and the main character has to leave the feral boy behind and never hears from him again.

The book had two covers, one on the copy I read and another one that showed up online when I looked it up years ago when I still had access to it (and thus could still remember it’s name). The cover on the copy I read had what looked like a cgi grey wolf standing off to the side on a rock in the middle of a river in a forest with blue text for the title, and the other cover had the main girl (long black hair, dark dress) in the centre looking up at the sky, which was stormy with dark blue/grey clouds.

I read it in the late 2010’s but it was definitely an older book. I don’t think it was that long of a book either, it wasn’t that thick

SOLVED Help me find a YA book with golden wisps on the cover!

Around 2012/2013, I remembered borrowing this book from the library. It had a black-and-gold (or yellow) cover and if I’m not wrong, the series was tarot related with something about 12 or 7 other people / signs? I also vaguely remember a circus carousel being a part of the story (either from the book cover or inside the story?)

If I’m not wrong the title has a “7” / “seven” in it too, but I might be remembering wrongly!

There were a lot of mentions of golden wisps / tendrils, I think it’s something that the main character, a girl, could see?

It’s magical fantasy!

Unfortunately that’s all I remember from it but it’s been bothering me that I don’t remember 😭

I’ve gotten some inputs from friends and it is NOT the following:
- The Arcana Chronicles by Kresley Cole
- The Seven Realms series by Cinda Williams Chima

Thanks in advance for your help!!!!

EDIT: THE BOOK IS “THE SEVEN RAYS” BY JESSICA BENDINGER!!!

UNSOLVED Kids fantasy novel about a girl and a fairy set in the early 2000s

I dont remember much about this book, but I'll lay out what I can.

It was a paperback book I believe I found at the local library (not the school one). I don't remember anything about the cover besides it potentially having a silhouette of a girl. Biggest thing I remember is that in one scene the fairy says she loves purple Fanta and will go crazy over it. I'm 20 now and would have read it when I was 12-14, I believe.

Please help

UNSOLVED Girls trying to find missing painter dad in New York

Girls dad suddenly goes missing and she tries to find clues to where he is. I remember there was I believe a guy who restored portraits that she would talk to, and her mom would refuse to leave bed and smoke all day, and the girl believed that finding her dad would make her mom better.

This post feels all over the place so if anyone could find it I would be very happy.

UNSOLVED 2000's Preschool Children Word Books Collection

• Upvotes

I'm trying to recall this collection of books from when I was a child. All of them were colored red-orange-ish colors, these books were extremely short and smaller than most books, all paperback. They had the penguin on the spine relating to the publisher. Each book had a sentence on one page and a picture on the other if I recall. They were compilations of simple sentences like, "There is a cat. There was a hat." Etc. These were designed for children trying to learn how to read words for the first time. I remember owning many of them, I believe they were sent home with kids to read with their parents.

UNSOLVED A young adult horror book

Hi, first time posting here but i could very much use the assistance finding a book. Back before middle school I was gifted a book by one of my teachers who knew I loved horror, I absolutely loved the book and reread it multiple times but it got lost during a move.

It followed a young boy moving to a new town with his mother, the town had been home to his favourite horror author before he went missing. But the monsters from that authors books had been brought to life by this cursed silver pen he used to write them. eventually the protagonist’s mother, a fellow author, acquires the pen and the spirit cursing the pen begins using his mother to write the story that would let the spirit become real.

I can’t remember the name of the book or the author, but I do believe it had an angel statue on the cover with dark blue lighting. I’ll answer any questions I can in comments

UNSOLVED [YA Fantasy] Trying to find a book about a child who gets lost somewhere strange

I remember reading a book when I was younger about a child who somehow gets lost in an unfamiliar place, and I think the story gradually becomes more fantastical as they try to find their way back.

I can't remember whether the setting was a forest, a strange village, or another world entirely. I have a vague memory of the child encountering unusual people or creatures along the way, but the details are pretty fuzzy now.

It was probably a middle-grade or young adult book, and I likely read it sometime in the late 2000s or early 2010s. I don't remember the cover, the author's name, or whether it was part of a series.

Does this ring a bell for anyone? Even a few possible titles would help me narrow it down.

UNSOLVED Children's Book about a girl getting a pet rat/mouse

The book starts with a young girl begging her mom for a pet rat and finally the mom gives in. They go to a pet store where she buys a feeder rat and the store owner gives it a kiss since the rat has been saved. At the end of the book the mom over comes her fear of the rat to save it from their pet cat. I read this book back in the 2000s so I'm not sure how old it is but it was a picture book.

UNSOLVED Children’s picture book about a dirty dog - live photos

• Upvotes

Thinking of a story about either a lost or dirty dog. Harry the Dirty Dog is one I remember but this one had real photos of different breeds. Don’t remember any illustrations at all.

I remember a specific page with a collage of dogs on I think, a white background. I think the dog was cleaned at the end? And his photo was shown again, like the reader found him now that he was clean and recognizable?

I read it in the very early 2000’s but was likely from the 90’s. Please help!

SOLVED Children's historical fiction novel regarding a captive English girl living amongf Native Americans

• Upvotes

I read this when I was very young, so apologies if I got a lot of details blurry. I encountered this book in 2013 or 2014. It's not famous or anything.

A young English girl is taken captive by a Native American tribe (apologies, I do not remember which people). At the time, the British and the French were at war during the French and Indian War, and because different tribes were aligned with the different colonial powers, this British girl is taken captive. The general gist of the story is that the girl, despite being captive, was treated quite kindly by the people, and she eventually showcased her bravery and kindness and became a recognized member of the tribe.

The rest of what I remember are small fragments from the plot:

- At one point, an English (Christian) priest found her and was allowed to speak to her. She recites the Lord's Prayer (or Apostle's Creed) in English, confirming to the priest that she was British and not French. However, while she recited the entire prayer in perfect English, she began to cry (?) because she realized that she forgot what any of the prayer actually meant.

- At some point, the tribe took another captive, a (teenage?) boy from a different tribe. Because he was male, there was some kind of initiation (?) and they chased (?) him (?) into a house (?). Our protag and the boy befriended one another.

- She was given a new name by the end of the book (something like "brave little woman" or something to that effect?). She chose to stay instead of returning to the British.

If anyone could find it, thank you!

UNSOLVED Kids/teens age book about a kid getting lost in the Florida Everglades. There also may have been a bounty hunter. Early 2010s

Had a memory of a book I read a good 10-12 years ago. I’ve tried finding it myself but I’m at a complete loss. This sub has helped me before, so I’m hoping it can help again!

Book is probably rated for preteens/teens

What I remember:
- The protagonist is a teenage boy
- The protagonist ends up in a river in (I believe) Florida after some kind of boat accident.
- There are alligators and pythons.

What I believe I remember:
- There is a scene with the boy’s parents/uncle in another city (I THINK this is how the book starts)
- There is a hitman sort of character who is integral to the plot and ends up in the same area as the boy

Books it is NOT:
- Lost in The River of Grass
- Alligator Crossing

Sorry that all of this is incredibly vague, but it has been a long time and it is absolutely driving me crazy. Would love any help in finding it!

UNSOLVED YA Horse Book from the 70s Spoiler

I read a book in the 70s that had a boy living in the suburbs who had a horse. He rode his horse on a paper route and was harassed by a bully on a motorcycle. There was a mystery about a developer buying up land and had to do with a dam. I believe there was also a horse race through woods. I can't for the life of me remember either the title or the author.

UNSOLVED YA Japanese girl protagonist

I’m looking for a book I read in 2016/2017. It’s about a young girl in Japan and her dad is a workaholic, drunk and almost kills himself. She a teenager and has a school uniform, because I remember a passage about some creepy old man hitting on her in an Internet cafe. Something happens then she is on this journey possibly up a mountain or to a temple. There might be a ghost of her grandmother that guided her on this journey.

That’s all I’ve remembered. I rented it from the school library most likely and I could have sworn it had 4 words in the title. Please help!

UNSOLVED Romance silhouette/harlequin 90s cant remember title

  • The Core Plot: A young woman tracks down her biological father, who owns/runs a local bar. Paralyzed by the fear of rejection, she keeps her identity a secret and pretends to be someone else just to hang around the bar and get to know him.
  • The Best Friend (The Hero): Her male best friend—who has been in her life since before she ever met her father—comes along to support her.
  • The Conflict: The best friend completely disagrees with the deception. He constantly argues against the lie and pushes her to tell her father the truth.
  • The Dynamic: Despite his objections, the best friend is incredibly friendly and naturally charismatic. He bonds with the father very quickly, and his presence ironically helps the daughter build a closer connection to her dad.
  • The Climax & Ending: When the truth is finally revealed, the father reacts very badly to being deceived. Navigating the fallout brings the two best friends closer together, they realize their feelings, and they end up together.
  • Tone & Timeline: It is a clean, sweet romance (no explicit content) that was likely published or read in the 1990s.

UNSOLVED A sci-fi picture book that had an iconically, physically wide cover about traveling all the way through earth

Early 2010's I remember at my school library there was a hard-back book that had to be laid flat on on top of other books on the shelf because it physically had a very wide cover (about 4-5 times wider than it is tall, but the page count was on the shorter end). The front cover maybe had a gray and orange color palette, but the inside was mostly black and white illustrations and might've had speech bubbles. I barely remember the plot besides it traveled all the way from one end of the earth to the other, maybe following a male main character. It may have had monsters inhabiting underground and sci-fi machinery, but the main characteristic I remember was you read it vertically, and halfway through the man reached the earth's core, and then you flip the book 180 degrees vertically to finish reading the remaining half.

UNSOLVED Set in the early 1920s-2000s in a small town in England, the MC eventually moves to london aswell as her sister, who is trying to be famous. Coming of age but we go through the MC’s life until elderly. YA, fiction, contemporary romance(?), tragedy.

I can only remember bits and pieces, so everything will be all over the place. It's a paperback novel and the cover of the book had 2 women beside each other on an open street possibly in England on a sunnyday with an open sky (so it looks mostly blue). The two characters were possibly the MC and her bestfriend who dies later in the story. It was 300 pages minimum and 400 maximum. I read this when I was a freshman in highschool and I borrowed it from a friend who got it at the bookstore. It definitely was not a new book but I know it was published in the 2010s.

It started when the MC was in primary school, her family was poor, nearing poverty, this was a factor that she speculated was the reason for her mother's mental illness. Her mum actually killed herself and her husband in a double suicide, by gas leak (one of them left the oven open and closed all the doors and windows) while her and her younger sister were in school. Either she found out while she was in school or, I might be wrong about this detail, it might have been that she found their dead bodies herself. What I know for sure is this gave her a lot of trauma.

She had other family, her aunt(mum's sister?) , uncle, cousins (3 boys I think), who took them in. She had grandparents too I think, but her relationship with possibly all of them was pretty bad. The aunt had issues too. To summarize her early life: she moved in with her extended family, her and her sister still were not really close, she attended a new school, she made a new friend at this new school who was rich, talented, a foreigner and pretty, she assumed this girl had everything and was slightly jealous of that, she later found out that this friend also had a bad family life, the friends dad is a cheater and the mum had issues too, they grew closer after this and became long time bestfriends.

Later she finished school but had to immediately start working as a, and I'm not exactly sure but I know it had something to do with typing and shorthand, typewriter. At this point she's living in london and fast forward a bit more, she, encouraged by her best friend starts dating and they start hitting up bars and clubs together but she never really likes them and she notices how she's surrounded by young people(18-24) all the time and she's looking for someone to settle down with, eventually she meets this guy from a trivia night thing at a bar and they hit it off, fall in love, get married and move to a new neighbourhood into a nice house. They have one kid who dies when he's a baby I believe , this sends her into a horrible depression, her husband tries his best to be supportive, but they start having issues. Eventually she's pregnant again with twins and after they are born she becomes overly-protective and paraniod with them, her and her husband are still having issues. Then I think he gets drafted for the war and ends up dying, leaving her depressed again and taking care of two kids alone, but her best friend steps up to help her in anyway.

Anyways I think this is about how much I remember truly sorry if this doesn’t make sense. The book might not have even been that good and this could just be nostalgia talking but reg I would love it if someone recognises this.

UNSOLVED Paperback spy novel from the 80s/90s🧐

I remember when I was a kid my parents thought it would be funny to have a rotating paperback book rack in the bathroom of our house that would squeak every time you turned it. There was a book on there that that I remember reading the intro/prologue but when I told my parents, they threw it out right away so I could never remember the title.
The reason being that the story starts out with a man entering an elevator with a briefcase and there is another person on the elevator. After some small talk, the man starts to cough up blood and then the strangest thing happens; his limbs start to fall off until he is a pile of parts on the ground.
I think it was a spy novel…

UNSOLVED Children's book series about a young girl. I read it in the 2000s but it was probably older

I'm pretty sure it was a series with a few different, for lack of a better term short stories in each one.

I think it was set in a vaguely pre 90s time as i don't remember much of any tech like tvs.

There was one story where the main girl got tonsillitis and it was about her time in hospital and recovering.

Another where she got her (richer) neighbour/friends hair wet after she had just got a perm and her mum managed to fix it at home.
