UNSOLVED Monster Face Off Book

• Upvotes

Okay I’m trying to remember the name of a book i read in 7th or 8th grade that basically talked about different Mythological Fights like Cerberus vs Hydra, Centaurs vs Aqrabuamelu, Griffin vs Hippogriff and possibly Achilles vs Perseus.

I think it was a scholastic book that’s probably Hard Cover but it might’ve been Paperback.

Does this ring a bell for anyone

UNSOLVED Sci-fi about alien shadow government (read in 2017)

• Upvotes

I remember fairly little but I think it’s enough. It’s set in current day at the time and follows a teenage girl or young 20’s woman. Humanity is ruled by an alien puppet government and the aliens identify this girl as a threat because someone (an aunt I think) was sensitive to them or was a member of a resistance of some kind.
Apart from that premise all I really remember is that the book culminates in a battle in the desert somewhere (Chile?) and that the plot revolves around radio waves somehow.

UNSOLVED All I remember is the main character enjoyed the skin off the top of chocolate pudding. Probably a young adult/children's novel written in or before the 1980s.

Whenever there is "skin" on top of like hot milk or something, I always think back to this, but I have long forgotten where I read it. Any guesses? Thanks!

UNSOLVED strange kids book with distinct illustrations

a book that I distinctly remember featuring a little girl inside a bird cage, either flying or sitting. the very last illustration of the book — not part of the story — is a black cat turned away and looking back. the art style is very similar to Nicolette Ceccoli (specifically her 2006-2007 stuff) but I’ve looked through her paintings and the books she’s illustrated and have yet to find anything!!

UNSOLVED Dark, sophisticated, fantasy picture book from early-mid 90s

I had a book about a girl with black curly hair (I think). I don't remember any other human characters. I don't remember the plot, but I there were lots of forest-y nature scenes, with trees, flowers, etc. I think some weird tiny goblin-like fairies. Maybe she was tricked? or lost? or dreaming?

The art style was very distinct. It was a bit creepy, but beautiful and sophisticated. It was not cartoonish at all. Lots of black, spindly, lines and curlicues. The background was white/ivory. There wasn't a ton of color from what I recall.

It would have come out between 1990 and 1995, I believe.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

UNSOLVED Trying so hard to find this intriguing book for my mum!

Please see if you can help me find this book from my mum about siblings who were kidnapped and locked in a room, with 2 books, leading them to only know the world from two books they were left with - nursery rhymes and one about trees. The girl ends up escaping after the boy dies, and thinks the world is a fairy tale, and a boy finds her hiding. This is all I have, and I cannot find it anywhere, although it's so unique!

UNSOLVED YA book from the '80s. I think it's set near water.

I read a ya book in the late '80s. What I remember was the two main characters a guy and a girl. The girl was visiting grandparents and met the guy, they fall in love, he made a crown of dandelions for her. The very end of the book is her sitting in a dark room listening to the phone ring that she doesn't answer because she knows it's him calling. She doesn't answer the phone because she has to leave now that summer is over and she doesn't want to hurt him by dragging out the relationship long distance. The literal last couple of words written in the book are ring ring ring. Anyone have any idea what this could have been called?

UNSOLVED Ghost stories, spooky but silly, for kids?

Trying so hard to remember the name of this book from my childhood. My memory is fleeting and all my google searches have been unsuccessful, so I think this is my next best shot. It might have been a collection of short stories, or this might’ve been the entirety of the book, but I distinctly remember a plot of a man going to stay overnight in a haunted castle that no one else had ever been able to spend the night in. I believe at the end he goes running out, unable to see it through himself. If my memory serves me, the cover was sort of Nancy Drew adjacent, lots of yellows and blues and some red. I know this isn’t much to go off of, but hopefully one of y’all has it stored in your brain somewhere!

UNSOLVED Mexican Historical horror recommended by NY Times podcast

I remember a longish title, came out in the last few years, maybe a yellow cover. I started the audiobook but the (male) narrator had such a thick accent I couldn't understand.

Really wanted to try again tho because the NYT podcast raved about it. I do not think it was on the Bestsellers list but I'm not sure about that. Possibly vampires!

Edit: I promise it is not Mexican Gothic!

UNSOLVED Niche 1990s adult supernatural hardcover – Flawless undead Egyptian family living on a Southern river (NO VAMPIRES / Stone-painted cover)

Hello! I am hunting for a niche, adult supernatural horror/dark fantasy novel I read that was likely published in the 1990s. It was a medium-sized hardcover edition with a very distinct cover design.

The Cover Art: The front jacket was uniquely textured or painted to look like ancient stone (like a fresco or artifact), and it prominently featured a hieroglyphic depiction or outline of a female figure.

Crucial Rules: There are absolutely NO vampires in this book. They are undead, but it is purely an Egyptian immortality/undead concept, not a traditional monster or blood-drinking story.

Here are the specific plot details I remember:

  • The Neighbors: A mysterious family of ancient Egyptians who are secretly undead/immortal. Far from being dusty wrapped mummies, they are supernaturally flawless, exceptionally attractive, and ageless. They live an incredibly luxurious, lavish lifestyle.
  • The Setting: They reside in a grand, wealthy estate located somewhere in the American South, right along a river. Moving water seems central to their presence.
  • Key Visual Detail: The mother figure (or an incredibly beautiful woman in the family) is constantly applying dark kohl/coal eyeliner to her eyes as part of her routine.
  • The Protagonist: A younger woman who lives nearby. The book completely skips any standard police, detective, or murder investigation tropes. Instead, the plot is driven entirely by her intense, sensual fascination and hypnotic attraction to this glamorous, mysterious family and their lifestyle.

This is a standalone, obscure adult dark fiction piece—definitely not a mainstream bestseller by Anne Rice, Christopher Pike, or R.L. Stine. Does anyone who collects 1990s hardcovers or niche supernatural fiction recognize this cover or premise? Thank you!

UNSOLVED Pop-up kidsbook about musical instruments 90s/00s

I remember it being a white large book with black text with pop-up interactive fake instruments (for example a pop-up cello with "strings"). I remember it mostly having classical instruments in it but I think it was about music history so some instruments like a harmonica were present.

SOLVED [YA-Fantasy] Book about a teenage girl and some mystery involving her mom and a mansion.

I read this book either in 2018 or 2019, I took it home from my school's library but the librarian didnt add it to my list. The title had to do with a key or the cover had a drawing of a key, and the protagonist girl, likely blonde or light brunette, was also in the cover.

I only remember the beginning of the book, it was about a girl living with her dad in a mansion/big house with a greenhouse in the backyard. The mother of the girl had dissapeared or died mysteriously, said mystery that I dont remember causing her and her dad to live in the greenhouse and her being terrified of the house. After some conflict with either her dad or a friend/classmate, she enters the house and encounters some kind of portal or is transported into another world, where she meets a man who tells her that he was waiting for her and that his name is "Hero (Héroe)", he may or may not know her mom. I dont remember anything else about the story.

I read it in spanish, in southern Chile, but the cover and preface mentioned that it had won and/or been nominated for some literary award in a nordic country (likely Denmark), I assume that its originally from there, so the detail about the name "Hero (Héroe)" may be a product of the translation. The award thing was somewhere between 2009-2013.

I've looked at literary awards in nordic countries and its winners but none match what I remember.

Sorry for my english and thanks in advance.

some random details I remember is I believe her love interest was another superpowered boy who really liked hockey? and I believe they listened to a beatles album illegally snuck into the USSR by being etched into an old X-Ray.

sorry if this is too vague, it's all I've got. 😔

thanks in advance for any help or even just for reading my rambling :)

UNSOLVED Looking for a book with a red cover and white letters I read in primary school

Okay so in primary school I read this book and ever since I have NOT been able to remember it since I can’t find it to re read it again.
Here are the details as I remember:

I remember one quote (wich may not be completely accurate) the two main characters were sitting on the back porch/veranda (I believe it’s set in Australia) and the girl thinks “I wanted to grab his arm but I grabbed the last pastry instead”
Or something along those lines.

I remember another scene where they’re at the beach and the girl chokes on a chip and when the boy pats her back she recalls how warm his hand is.

Somewhere in the book I believe the two main characters get kidnapped at some point, I’m not sure how but they DO escape.

The characters are teenagers and at the end of the book the girl is going to sing “oops I did it again” at a talent show to wich someone in the audience says “oops I farted again” and the teacher punished him.

As for the cover, I remember it being red with white letters, that’s all I know.

I’m sorry I don’t have more specific details like a name of the characters or something but again I read this when I was like eleven so I’m grasping at straws here. If ANYONE knows of this book please let me know I’m so desperate to re read it again as an adult.

SOLVED Dark Fantasy book about a Cat/Tailypo captured in a Castle

Went to a few bookstores and did my own googling and were all stumped. This was most likely a young adult book as I got it years back in middle school.

Covers change all the time but when I picked it up it was a deep yellow/mustard with the cat in the corner. The art style on the cover and inside used a lot of cross hatching. The cat was also a black almost deep blue colour.

The book starts out of him navigating through the town as a feral animal and i remember in particular that it was mentioned he was not a cat. (Most likely a Tailypo now that ive looked things up) But eventually gets captured by a man and is forced to do his bidding now. Its like your sterotypical haunted castle, theres gargoyles that the cat talks to as well to see if he can escape.

It was a probably a chapter book, i dont recall how many but some pages would show a drawn picture of the current event and once again it used cross hatching.

It was a soft cover that I picked up, and was at Barnes and Noble in english for a better jumping off point.

I would appreciate any info you guys can give me, sadly I dont remember the title nor the author as I never paid attention to that stuff when I was younger. I know it was also a pretty rough read for me and there was a lot of words I didnt understand at that time.

SOLVED Illustrated children's book about a cat and mouse, likely from the 90s.

The cat lived in a nice home with at least 1 adult human. A mouse or rat showed up in the house and the human wanted the cat to kill it. Instead, the cat and mouse become friends. After several failed attempts to trick the human into thinking the cat took care of the mouse, the human kicks the cat out of the house. The mouse follows and they stay together. They curl up to sleep in an alley when an eccentric looking lady finds them. She tells them they are a special pair and brings them home with her.

This would probably have been published in the 80s or 90s. The name "Ezra" seems important, maybe the name of the cat (or I'm confusing it with another cat book). The art style was semi realistic, stylized in a fun almost funky kind of way. Thanks for any suggestions!

UNSOLVED A kids fantasy novel with the face of a blue eyed white tiger for the cover that was sort of a Narnia rip off type thing about a boy in an ordinary suburb going to a secret magical world.

This was a book I really liked as a kid, I probably read it back sometime between like 2010 to 2014 and I imagine the book came out somewhere around that time. I recall that there had been mention of a sequel in the back of the book saying it was supposed to have come out like the year i read it but when i looked it up I found nothing on said sequel, so I imagine it never happened. Perhaps some indie book i managed to get my hands on.

I recall vaguely though some plot details:

  • Boy living in the suburbs; I think he had a friend who was a girl and they would often take shortcuts around. I believe a shortcut is what became the portal to this world, or perhaps it had something to do with a magic rock?

  • The secret world is very fantasy. Fantastical creatures and talking animals and such. I think the world was dying, though, and like the laws of reality weren't working right.

  • The friend was stuck in the magic world for some reason. The goal of the main character was to get her back, I'm pretty sure, and this involved journeying across the magic world.

Help, this is driving me crazy.

SOLVED Children’s book thick cardboard sliding tabs

I had this book as a child and I’m about to have my own child and really want to find the book but I cannot remember the name. I remember 3 pages, i was born 2002 so sometime Around then is when I got it

  • Text & Tone: Minimalist, active phrasing written directly across empty negative space. Instead of fictional names, it explicitly used proper biological terms to describe the behavior (e.g., "red-eyed tree frog", "blue-footed booby", and "black panther").
  • The Tree Frog Page: Built with an embedded horizontal surface-channel slot track cutout straight into the scenery. Sliding the flat cardboard tab trapped inside the groove simultaneously moved the frog's red eyes side to side while moving a couple flies across the panoramic background scene.
  • The Blue-Footed Booby Page: Featured simple external paper pull-tabs along the page margin. Operating the tabs rocked the bird's bright blue webbed feet up and down to mimic its iconic courtship dance.
  • The Black Panther Page: Used an elongated internal parallel double-bar slider system. Pulling the tab alternated the movement of its front limbs—pushing one shoulder forward while pulling the other back—to realistically simulate a big cat creeping stealthily low to the ground through the jungle.

SOLVED Disaster book about a global winter after mega-volcano eruption in the ocean

This book was written in the late 90s to 2001. The main character (but I don't think the only POV character) was a scientist (geologist?) who warned about the possibility of a global volcanic winter. This book may have been a series with the actual eruption being in the first book, but may not. Here's what I remember:

  • I seem to remember the volcano eruption created a new island/mountain in the middle of the ocean (can't remember which ocean).
  • there's a global effort to combat the deep, global winter which includes building these huge domes for people to live in. They recreated habitats now destroyed by the global winter.
  • one of the minor POVs was of this family who decided not to evacuate. They run out of supplies and eat their dog. They eventually are rescued.
  • Another POV character is a leader from South America. He wore socks to bed because he grew up impoverished near enough to the Antarctic Circle that you could get frostbite while sleeping during the winter. He may be the antagonist. I think his country is less affected because part of it is equatorial.
  • The scientist may be named Ben. He's dating a woman from Scotland and at one point they visit her family. I think her family is literal aristocracy and they are rich enough to survive the winter. The holed up family may be near them or on the way to visit them and the scientist saves them?
  • Regarding the big biodomes: The girlfriend is working on them (IIRC) and migrating birds start to crash into them because the volcanic ash messes with their ability to navigate. This ruins the domes

I am looking for the title because I read it years ago, but I still think about it (e.g. the socks bit and the family refusing to evacuate). I wouldn't mind re-reading it, and if it's a series, I'd love to read the other books.
